Game 64: A Natinal Incident

By Joseph Pawlikowski

Lord help us if it ever reads “New Ork” on the Yanks road jerseys.

The Yanks begin a three-game set tonight against the worst team in the league. With just 16 wins, they have 11 fewer wins than Arizona, Oakland, and Baltimore, which are all in a tie for the second fewest wins. Yeep. This is mostly due to their horrible pitching staff, which will be exposed, to say the least, at the Stadium.

Taking the hill for the Nats tonight will be 22-year-old Shairon Martis. He’s made 12 starts this year for a total of 69.2 IP, striking out just 28 and walking 29. That’s not how you want to approach the Yankees. This has led to 39 earned runs for an ERA of 5.04.

The Yanks will counter with their ace, CC Sabathia. CC pitched masterfully for seven innings against the Sox last time out, but allowed two runners in the eighth which led to the Sox retaking the lead. Such is life. While the Nats have a good lineup, the Sox they are not.

Sorry for the short game thread tonight. I’m headed up to the game to meet some old friends.

Lineup:

1. Derek Jeter, SS
2. Johnny Damon, LF
3. Mark Teixeira, 1B
4. Alex Rodriguez, 3B
5. Robinson Cano, 2B
6. Jorge Posada, C
7. Hideki Matsui, DH
8. Nick Swisher, RF
9. Melky Cabrera, CF

And on the mound, number fifty-two, CC Sabathia.

Moose Season: The Pennsylvania General Assembly passed a “noncontroversial” resolution today in honor of Mike Mussina’s career and recent retirement. The full text is available here. Apparently, Moose coaches Little League near his home. I wonder if he has a dry-erase board for the little kids. -Ben

Stryker says:

slade heathcott in the house tonight!

http://twitpic.com/7kovf

J.R. says:

Yeah, it looks like he is playing hardball with the Yankees…

J.R. says:

I do love it when they trot out the “A” lineup.

whozat says:

Taking the hill for the Nats tonight will be 22-year-old Shairon Martis. He’s made 12 starts this year for a total of 69.2 IP, striking out just 28 and walking 29.

So…you’re saying he’ll throw six shutout innings at minimum?

Greg F. says:

Hah, that’s exactly what I was thinking.

pat says:

Apparently the Nats lead the league in walks, that is not something I would have guessed.

Zach says:

could have fooled me – 6 pitch inning :)

Lily says:

i will be dissappointed is the yankees don’t sweep this team. but then again we all know how they yankees play when its against pitchers they have never seen before. they tend to make them look like cy young

In 2 career starts against the Nationals, CC’s faced 61 batters in 16.1 innings and given up a combined 3 runs.

They’re batting .170/.250/.189 against him.

That includes a complete game 5-hit, 9 K shutout last August for the Brewers.

Zach says:

Christian Guzman DH? Why wouldnt Dunn DH?

Maybe because the defensive upgrade of the Former Attorney General over Guzman at SS is bigger than the defensive upgrade of Josh Willingham over Dunn?

That’s my guess.

Zach says:

Found it, Willingham is on the bereavement list, brother died in car chase from police. Harris and Patterson are on the bench but they suck

I Remember Celerino Sanchez says:

Plus, the former Attorney General is hitting pretty good:

319/.377/.449 (77 PAs)

Zach says:

Nick Green and Gonzalez hitting this year ahhh

mick says:

I’m off topic but why hasn’t Brackman been pitching in Charleston? Is he hurt?

whozat says:

Feel free to email Mike to ask about that. Perhaps he’ll address it on the DotF post later.

mick says:

pat says:

There is no off topic on game threads.

No idea. He’s not on the DL.

Dorian says:

Wish I was at Waterfront park tonight.

Love those one pitch outs.

pat says:

whozat says:

Not as much when Derek Jeter does it…

That mustache and soul patch can only mean one thing:

That’s not Nick Johnson… it’s Evil Nick Johnson.

Love it, six pitches. Thanks for saving the bullpen an inning.

Charlie says:

I expect nothing less than a shutout for CC & 8 runs from our offense… our A lineup against a horrible team with our ace on the hill. We better win this game, it’s practically a gift.

The Nats can hit, and expecting nothing less than 8 shutout innings from any pitcher is dumb to begin with.

If Alex Rodriguez doesn’t hit 3 homers today, I want him whacked immediately.

Charlie says:

It was a joke, but i bet CC will still do it

I really thought they were gonna wear their road greys with “Washingtn” on the front.

The reason the Natinals left the “O” off their jerseys? All the “O”s in the city were used up in Barack Obama campaign posters.

How many homers for Dunn this series? I say six. That’s a reasonable number for a three game series in a bandbox, right?

Zach says:

The question is he going to have more Ks or HRs?

I could see Dunn reaching the third deck.

pat says:

Hopefully it’s off bombko when we’re up 10-0 in the 9th,

Yeah serious. Not off CC of course, but CMW … yikes.

Fred says:

This is already a win tonight because Veras is gone.

pat says:

More fun with FanGraphs:

The Nationals have a team ERA of 5.34 but a team FIP of 4.78. That +0.56 E-F is the largest in baseball.

Probably because their team UZR/150 of -8.0 is the worst in baseball.

The guys behind their pitchers aren’t doing a good job of limiting runs scored by converting balls in play into outs.

pat says:

Haha, I love it, they show cervelli on the bench he’s not paying attention to the game, he’s just looking over scouting reports.

whozat says:

He’s got a comic book in there, you know it.

JobaWockeeZ says:

CC gave up a hit to the Natinals?!?!?!? Bust.

That was some serious english on that ball.

Heh. Cue shot.

Adam Dunn = Minnesota Fats

pat says:

That was a RIDICULOUS amount of spin.

nmc says:

Sorry if this is off-topic, but Youkilis took the lead over Teixeria in the All-Star Vote. Can you guys rally some kind of internet groundswell to make sure that Teix starts over the greek god of chins?

I guess. Don’t we believe in the guy with the better season getting it? I love Tex, but Youkilis is OBP’ing .461 and has a higher OPS+. I guess the counting numbers could justify it.

And Tex was pretty bad in April, can’t discount that.

Yeah. As much as I clown on Ol’ Dead Squirrel-Beard, he’s the more deserving All Star at the moment.

Zach says:

Youk’s also missed time and since his return his BA has dropped 30 points, OBP dropped 20 points, Slg dropped 50 points in the last 10 games, sucks when a hot start stops.

Adam Dunn didn’t slide hard into second base, spikes up, because he doesn’t have a passion for the game and doesn’t really like baseball.

/Riccardi’d

pc69 says:

If this game gets boring, you can switch to ASU/Texas…Root for the Sun Devils not Steroid University Longhorns, I mean Roger Clemens Longhorns.

Zach says:

How many of their players have tested positive?

pc69 says:

He ran into some trouble but is pretty much dealing.

Mike Leake’s pitching for ASU, 8th overall pick.

Chance Ruffin is a pretty damn good prospect pitching for Texas, first or second round guy next year.

pc69 says:

Root for the Sun Devils not Steroid University Longhorns, I mean Roger Clemens Longhorns.

Man, pc69 is gonna be so heartbroken when he looks up what college Barry Bonds played for…

pc69 says:

No, I know Barry went to ASU, but just like Clemens he was a skinny little kid. But as a fellow alum, Barry, being the ass that he is, does get a break ;)

Just like Pedroia gets a break – being the only Red Sox I can tolerate.

Biggest disappointment is Larish who was drafted by the Tigers but is not hitting well right now in Detroit. Was drafted for his bat, not his 1b defense.

When Robbie Cano is lacing balls to left-center, that’s a good sign.

dkidd says:

did i mishear or did flaherty say the complete opposite of what he said re posada not using scouting reports?

dkidd says:

clarification: what he said on the radio

Ivan says:

I was thinking this the other day,

The Tigers in 03 finish with by far with the worst record in baseball, so how did they didn’t get the the top pick in the 04 draft?

Back then they alternated leagues, AL got the top pick one year, NL the next. That was the NL’s year. They did away with that in the current CBA.

Ivan says:

Ok, that was a pretty stupid rule.

Zach says:

maybe they should have the all star game decide the #1 pick instead of alternating :)

pat says:

Sorry, the correct answer was El Niño.

Stryker says:

one of the worst records of all time. oh well – at least they got verlander out of it, right?

Yeah, they would have taken him first overall anyway.

NO WAY, THEY WOULD HAVE TAKEN ME, MATT F$%#ING BUSH!!!!!!

DON’T YOU KNOW WHO I AM?!?!?!??!?!

Stryker says:

michael kay: “i don’t like being touched”

that’s why he’s a 48 year old bachelor.

pc69 says:

THAT is not the only reason. Even gold diggers can’t stand assholes.

Nick Swisher’s such a bump. Drawing a walk in that spot? If he was a team player he would have grounded out to the right side to get a run home.

kunaldo says:

It’s not Derek Jeter’s fault that he grounds into so many double plays. It’s the fault of the 8-9-1 hitters for not loading the bases so that those GIDP’s would be run-scoring GIDP’s.

YankeeScribe says:

Walks aren’t bad but making contact is a much more efficient way of driving baserunners home…

You shouldn’t be swinging at pitches out of the zone, you have a poor chance of hitting them well.

If they’re walking Swisher, it’s because they’re not giving him pitches that can be hit.

Justin says:

I’m spending the summer in DC, so I’m watching the game on the Nats’ channel (MASN). They were just talking about A-Rod, and complimenting his ability and accomplishments, and didn’t even hint at anything regarding steroids. I thought that was interesting, and also quite refreshing. Even the away announcers are over it.

Stryker says:

very refreshing. good to hear.

i’m pretty sure had the roberts book not absolutely BOMBED it’d be a bigger deal.

Justin says:

Agreed, I think the way the media and the public received her book was their way of saying “alright, we’re moving on”.

bizarrojamie says:

I’m watching MASN also, due to being stuck with whichever feed my cable company decides to pick up. Have you noticed how they’re obsessed with the salaries, and costs of everything?

pat says:

Wow, that throw was damonesque.

Hard to believe Adam Dunn was once a highly recruited quarterback with a full ride to Texas. Where’d the arm go?

pat says:

Carl Crawford could have caught the flyball ran it into the infield and optioned it to the catcher before Dunn’s throw got there.

It was Texas, not Georgia or UCLA. Having a big arm is not necessarily a requirement to play QB at a school in the Big XII.

There’s a similar reason Carl Crawford was a QB recruit of Nebraska.

pc69 says:

Ok, it is early but bases loaded, 1 out against the Nationals and they come away with 1 run. Yikes.

Ivan says:

No worries.

When facing a bad team like this, if the yanks pitch well, they will sweep the series, the offense will bash their skulls in eventually.

whozat says:

Is that really a “yikes”? Man on third, less than two outs…they get a sac fly from your nine hitter to bring Jeter to the plate with a RISP.

I do wish that Jeter had done more this game.

pc69 says:

Mike Leake – 1.34 ERA entering the game with Texas – 4 strike out already, through 2 innings – 2 walks and 1 hit.

dkidd says:

good lesson for all the haters. when your team is 30 games under .500 in june, you appreciate talent

dkidd says:

reply button fail

Here’s something I hadn’t considered … is CC an all star?

Ivan says:

I don’t think so.

Felix,
Halladay,
Verlander,
Greinke,
Edwin Jackson,
Bedard.

Zach says:

All Star is tough for pitchers, do the managers/players vote on history/reputation or performance to date? Has he been top 5 this year? His numbers probably say no, but by the end of the year his numbers will even out and say yes.

Ivan says:

Allstars for SP’s are really midseason awards. CC might have the better season when the season ends but right now currently, those are the six pitchers who are pitching better than him right now.

Zach says:

Yeah, thats why I hate the whole “oh but he wasnt elected to 10 all star games in his career” becuase one or two starts can just blow up your numbers as a pitcher, and like you said its only judging half a season

Andy In Sunny Daytona says:

I hope not. He’s probably not going to start, so I hope he stays home and relaxes, same with everyone else.

whozat says:

Eh…how many starters usually make the team? If they didn’t have anyone else that would be there, then he’d be fine as the mandatory one-per-team guy, but…with Grienke, Halladay (though he might miss for health reasons?), Weaver, Verlander, even Edwin Jackson…I think there are other guys that might deserve it more.

How many starters are on the staff? 6?

I’d say, in order, the best AL starters have been:
Zack Grienke
Roy Halladay
Justin Verlander
Edwin Jackson
Jered Weaver
Erik Bedard
Cliff Lee
CC Sabathia

I don’t think he makes it.

pat says:

Oddly enough it was veras who was first to come to Bruney’s aid in his dustup with krod.

Justin says:

You’re right, we should have kept Veras so he could protect the set-up man!

The AG has nice numbers in his small sample. Good for him.

pat says:

Agreed. Luckily out AGNOHst tree provided us with young Ramiro Pena to fill his place

Ivan says:

Pete Abe said something interesting on his blog:

“The Yankees were 32-31 after 63 games last season. They were 32-31 in 2007, too.”

The yanks 36-27, despite the fact they are 0-8 against the sox. That’s interesting and impressive.

Justin says:

Definitely. And we’ve still yet to see this team really fire on all cylinders. When everything clicks, we’re gonna be a scary team.

dkidd says:

larry bowa is ashamed of his nephew for missing that throw

Andy In Sunny Daytona says:

Does Zimmerman win “The Player Who Looks-Like-His-Manager-The-Most Award”?

Justin says:

Bernard says:

So considering how putrid the Nats bullpen has been this year, why the hell hasn’t Tyler Clippard gotten a shot out there? Look at his minor league stats (they turned him into a reliever this year): 22 G, 36.2 IP, 0.99 ERA, 0.96 WHIP, 41 K, 16 BB, 2 HR. He’s also 3-1 with a save, not that it really matters. Perhaps, that hesitation hitch step in his delivery is more suited to the bullpen and is a lot more deceptive when you only see Clippard one time.

pc69 says:

Nick Johnson looks like the brother on I Love Earl, except he has the Earl porn stache.

pat says:

Haha very astute observation.

Andy In Sunny Daytona says:

He looks like a young Salvador Dali.

pc69 says:

dkidd says:

he’s always reminded me of private pyle in full metal jacket

Ivan says:

Of all the major sports in the US, a bad baseball team just looks so damn pathetic.

Zach says:

pc69 says:

That because all the other sports can mask ineptness – look at the NBA, has to be the worst sport to watch of all. Bad officiating, bad basketball, no offensive flow, just dunks and tats and a bunch of guys who slap like bitches when they fight.

Ivan says:

That’s totally not true. The NBA ALOT better than years ago.

For crying out loud, You have two of the best players in the NBA since the Bird/Magic days with LeBron and Kobe, You have the most Dynamic PG Since Magic arguebaly in Chris Paul, Offense is up a couple years now.

Zach says:

Offense is up because defense is down, traveling has disappeared, and superstars get to the foul line 8-10 times a game

dkidd says:

agree. the nba is unwatchable

pc69 says:

Perhaps, but I don’t pay to watch Kobe dribble for 15 seconds, drive the lane and get fouled every single time. I don’t pay to watch big guys tackle each other under the basket and no foul is called but a point guard puts his hand on a guys hip and it is a foul.

Most important, you cannot compare Kobe the alleged rapist and LeBron to Magic and Bird or even Jordan, not even in the same ball park.

It is just very unwatchable.

Ivan says:

Michael Jordan use to get every single call known to man.

I watch alot of NBA, as a knick fan, Jordan had refs eating out of his hands AND he knew that.

Kobe is gonna get his share of star treatment but not as much as you think it is, especially compared to Jordan.

pc69 says:

You may be right. for every reason I mentioned above, I refuse to watch the NBA. just not the same.

pat says:

Hey Tommie what do u think of Jordan Hill? Apparently Donnie W has a man crush on him?

Ivan says:

If your the Knicks, you can do better than Jordan Hill?

pat says:

I don’t really know too much about him that’s why I was asking.

Ivan says:

Personally, I would like the Knicks to draft Jrue Holliday.

donttradecano says:

Curry, Jennings, Lawson all better than Hill in my opinion.

Charlie says:

No way Lawson is better than Hill. Not sure about Jennings, either. Curry might be.

donttradecano says:

I meant better options. PG is more of a need for the Knicks.

Plus I highley doubt Hill falls past 4.

Hill’s falling to 10 in several mocks.

For the eighty-bajillionth time, donttradecano, NO, Ty Lawson is not better than that other fill-in-the-blank player you’ve mentioned.

Lawson is slipping into the low-20s for a reason. He doesn’t have an NBA body, at all. He’s too short and too slow, and he’s getting exposed by the other guards in this draft who are better pro prospects.

donttradecano says:

Im pretty sure thats only the second time…and anyway you got your opinions ill have mine. Lawson will be one the better players out of this draft.

Bernard says:

I’m going to be very depressed if the Knicks don’t end up with my mancrush Curry – emaciated girly men ftw

donttradecano says:

My ideal draft:

1st: Jennings/Lawson

then purchase or trade for a 2nd round pick (which supposedly Walsh is looking to do) to get one of Danny Green/Jeff Adrien/Chris Johnson. Since there supposedly looking to bring in TMac for one year, lets say for arguments sake they resign Lee and Nate then send one of the two plus someone with a big contrat to Houston for TMac. Your 2010 lineup looks as followed:

PG: Jennings/Lawson
SG: Tmac
SF: Al Harrington (if hes not traded)
PF: Wilson Chandler
C: who the hell knows.

Bench: Nate/Lee
Bench: Green/Adrien/Johnson
Bench: Gallinari

The rumor is we’re going to sign and trade Lee to the Pistons for Amir Johnson and the #15 pick.

I’ll take that in a cocaine heartbeat.

donttradecano says:

So assume that happens…where do you go 15th? Mullens, Clark, or Blair? of someone else?

What are your thoughts of Sam Young?

Ivan says:

I’ll take that too.

I get into arguements with Lee lovers, and always tell them, If the Knicks become a great team, is Lee making the starting lineup? NO!!!

donttradecano says:

meant 2009, obviously Lebron replaces Harrington in 2010.

Ivan says:

Why sign T-Mac coming off Micro-Facture surgery, who by the way is 30 years old.

donttradecano says:

1) Its only for a year
2) TMac maybe gets you to the playoffs
3) It probably gets rid of eddy curry and his massive contract.

Zach says:

Expiring contract, yes.
He’s going to miss the first 20 games next year, then his shoulder will hurt and miss 10, then his foot will hurt and miss 15, then back spasms and miss 12. so no playoffs
They’re not taking Curry’s contract, why would they do that?

I agree trade for him, just because his expiring contract, no chance of unloading Curry though

donttradecano says:

“The Knicks could put together a package that would save the Rockets some money and include a veteran shooting guard with an expiring contract — Larry Hughes ($13.6M) — along with Cuttino Mobley’s 80-percent insured $9.5M deal. Mobley could then officially retire with the team that drafted him (and originally knew about his heart condition). Call it full circle. Newsday”

Theres the idea, you wouldnt give up nothing for TMac?

And on the Curry front, someone will take on his contract with the idea they can get him to produce. Maybe not Houston but eventually someone will.

Zach says:

I’m all for trading for TMac, dont know what their plans are though. Are they keeping Artest? Because if not they neeI’m all for trading for TMac, dont know what their plans are though. Are they keeping Artest? Because if not they need to replace what 35+ points a night (artest/tmac)

Curry has to get on the floor and actually look healthy though, I understand A team will think they can get him to produce, but you also have every team in the league trying to cut payroll for summer 2010d to replace what 35+ points a night (artest/tmac)

Jamal G. says:

Really, Hideki? Bah.

pat says:

I wonder how many mets fans are going into their orioles series thinking it’s gonna be a cake walk. Wait until they find out those damn O’s can HIT.

Their outfield will give Yankee pitching agita for years to come.

I’m seriously considering giving the MVP vote that I don’t have to Adam Jones.

LiveFromNewYork says:

At this rate CC can pitch again tomorrow.

dkidd says:

is there someone in the boston areas who can contact nick green and remind him that he is nick green?

Ivan says:

Pedroia install the grit power in him.

Drew says:

I can’t believe the Sammy Soser used teh juice!!!1

Jefree says:

Swisher is an on base machine

jonathan says:

Big Sloppy hit another homer this one off of Chris Volstad, I swear to god if he told another f-ing curtain call….congrads you hit a homer….at this rate you might get 15 this year.

Justin says:

I still say he’s done.

Ivan says:

He might get a curtain call for losing 5 pounds.

LiveFromNewYork says:

It feels almost uncomfortable to watch this game.

Jack says:

What is wrong with Jorge Posada? CC has only thrown 34/46 pitches for strikes with just 1 strikeout! 3 hits allowed! That is unacceptable. If Cerveli had been catching tonight, CC would have a no hitter going and Cerveli would have gritted out 7 infield singles!

Justin says:
Jack says:

And Posada obviously doesn’t know how to call a game! What a bum.

VO says:

No, Jorge is the bust.

JobaWockeeZ says:

I heard that he can’t call games.

Justin says:

Ah you guys jinxed it!

Charlie says:

Charlie says:

so was that.. this ump is really bad

whozat says:

Crap. Well, 83 pitches in 4 innings is more like it.

Dela G says:

the yankees are working the count on this guy, but this no name scrub should have aready had his ass kicked. Look what boston is doing to that no name FLA pitcher

Zach says:

Just because you dont know who Chris Volstad is doesnt make him a no name pitcher

I Remember Celerino Sanchez says:

Excellent point. The guy has a 4.07 ERA and 1.218 WHIP. Very respectable.

Zach says:

Yeah and 1st round pick (16th overall) had 2.88 era and 1.33 WHIP in 84IP last year

Chris Volstad will probably earn several Cy Young votes before he retires. May win one or two as well. He’s a good, good young pitcher.

Zach says:

Anyone see Donte Stallworth got 30 days in jail for DUI manslaughter? It’s amazing what money can do for someone

Dela G says:

as a brotha without any money i know if i did that, i would be in jail more years than OJ :)

Zach says:

Jack says:

Isn’t that guy who killed Nick Adenhart facing 50 years to life in prison? I realize that was 3 counts of murder and not 1, but it shouldn’t go from 50 years to 30 days! Jesus Christ.

Zach says:

Yeah, although i think that guy fled the scene of the accident while Stallworth didnt move. but you’re right

pat says:

No shit, absolutely disgusting.

Jayson Williams says:

i think it’s kind of cool

Drew says:

ridiculous. You know, I mentioned that last night. I read it would be short. But, 30 fucking days!? holy shit.

Drew says:

You know, not to start a animal rights spat but, Mike Vick, responsible for the deaths of many dogs for the use of sport. Stallworth, kills one father.
I know dogs are pets, but I don’t see the logic in our law system.

Zach says:

Vick wasnt convicted one just one charge was he? Wasnt it dog fighting, illegal gambling, etc? But no doubt, the situations are messed up, now i dont think Goodell can suspend Vick, if he does he needs to give Stallworth like 5 times the suspension

ChrisS says:

Vick intentionally killed and tortured dogs for sport.

As tragic as it is, Stallworth was drinking and had a fatal accident. It was still an accident. If Donte got into his car, did a shot of Patron, told his buddies, “Hey watch, how much will you give me if I mow this guy down?” I can see a reason for a harsher sentence.

Drew says:

Wow. Is that what it takes for a harsher sentence? You’ve got to be joking. 30 fucking days.

ChrisS says:

Read TSMJC’s post below, too, warden.

Drew says:

I did, hence my reply to TSJC’s post.
BTW:
Human>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>Dog

Accent Shallow says:

Michael Vick should not have gotten a prison sentence.

Anyone see Donte Stallworth got 30 days in jail for DUI manslaughter? It’s amazing what money can do for someone.

No, it was a tragic accident, but the reason he only got 30 days is that while he was driving drunk, the guy who he hit leaped out into traffic. The judge rightly reasoned that the victim’s own negligent actions contributed to his death.

After Stallworth spent the night drinking at a bar in Miami Beach’s Fountainebleau hotel, police said he hit Reyes, a construction crane operator who was rushing to catch a bus after finishing his shift at about 7:15 a.m.

Stallworth told police he flashed his lights in an attempt to warn Reyes, who was not in a crosswalk when he was struck.

Stallworth had a blood-alcohol level of .126 after the crash, well above Florida’s .08 limit. Stallworth stopped after the crash and immediately told officers he had hit Reyes. Police estimated Stallworth was driving about 50 mph in a 40 mph zone…

After his release from jail, Stallworth must serve two years of house arrest and spend eight years on probation…

Stallworth must also undergo drug and alcohol testing, will have a lifetime driver’s license suspension and must perform 1,000 hours of community service. Lyons said after five years, Stallworth could win approval for limited driving for reasons such as employment.

Lyons noted that Stallworth stopped immediately after the accident, called 911 and submitted to roadside alcohol testing despite spending most of the night drinking at a Miami Beach hotel.

“He acted like a man,” Lyons said. “He remained at the scene. He cooperated fully.”

Miami-Dade State Attorney Katherine Fernandez Rundle cited Stallworth’s lack of previous criminal record, cooperation with police and willingness to accept responsibility as factors in the plea deal. Rundle also said the Reyes family — particularly the victim’s 15-year-old daughter — wanted the case resolved to avoid any more pain.

Drew says:

not to get into a whole thing here but, I doubt this man jumped in front of his car. You know, when I drive, and see someone on the side of the road, I usually change lanes, or slowly swerve halfway into the next lane as to avoid any possibility of a person falling off their bike, stumbling into the road, or blah blah. He flashed his lights? You’d think if you found a situation warranting flashing your lights you’d slow down as well.

I’ll take the opinions of the judge and prosecuting attorney who actually reviewed the relevant facts of the case over your opinions, thanks.

Drew says:

Yes, we know prosecutors are always right.
You should know damn well if you or I did this we’d be facing our prime years behind bars. This dude will miss a couple games.

No, we don’t know that.

Read the facts of the case. The guy Stallworth hit was running across a busy highway while not in the crosswalk at not at a stoplight or intersection.

If you or I hit that guy, even if we were drunk, but we had clean driving records, stopped immediately at the scene, alerted police, stayed with the victim, and admitted full culpability, we also probably would get a short jail time and extended probation/suspended sentence.

Read the facts of the case.

Drew says:

I have read them many times.
When the causeway is “busy” you won’t be doing 50. That’s a fact. I was late to class many times because of a “busy” causeway. The guy didn’t run into NYC traffic, he’s guilty of jaywalking.

Zach says:

Where in that report does it say he leaped in front of the car? Stallworth had time to flash his lights, that means seeing the guy, reaching over and flashing them, all while going 50 in a 40 zone DRUNK.

This wasnt like a young kid running out into traffic chasing a ball and getting hit by a soccer mom.

“but the reason he only got 30 days is that while he was driving drunk”
-So why was it DUI MANSLAUGHTER, and not just DUI?

Did you even read the title of the link you posted? “Financial agreement avoids lawsuit” So like I said, its amazing what money can do

ChrisS says:

The financial agreement settles any future civil suit the family of the man might file.

That’s the law suit avoided.

Zach says:

You’re right, my bad.

Still, if he didnt have money he wouldnt be in for only 30 days

ChrisS says:

You don’t know that.

Drew says:

I love how people stick up for someone like this but are so adamantly against a dog fighter. Next thing you know, my buddy will get life behind bars for shooting a deer outside of hunting season.

Zach says:

I see your point, but lets not act like deer hunting and dog fighting is the same thing

ChrisS says:
Drew says:

I actually was not speaking with hyperbole.

ChrisS says:

So your buddy is facing life in prison for poaching?

Meh. Poachers are scum, too.

Zach says:

“Miami-Dade State Attorney Katherine Fernandez Rundle cited Stallworth’s lack of previous criminal record, cooperation with police and willingness to accept responsibility as factors in the plea deal. Rundle also said the Reyes family — particularly the victim’s 15-year-old daughter — wanted the case resolved to avoid any more pain.

“For all of these reasons, a just resolution of this case has been reached,” Rundle said.”

Thats also from the article, explaining his sentence. No where does it say Reyes leaped infront of traffic and Donte couldnt stop

“police said he hit Reyes, a construction crane operator who was rushing to catch a bus after finishing his shift at about 7:15 a.m.”

Also,

http://bleacherreport.com/arti.....s-not-show

On March 14th Stallworth hit, and killed, 59-year old Mario Reyes on a causeway linking the city of Miami and Miami Beach.

The last page of the report, a hand drawn diagram of the accident scene, shows Reyes was not in a marked crosswalk. For reasons we may never know, he decided to try and cross the busy road where the east and westbound lanes are divided by a concrete barrier.

The diagram shows the collision was at the front passenger corner of Stallworth’s 2005 Bentley. The Browns wide receiver was in the far left hand lane nearest to the median.

From the diagram his choices at the time appear to have been either to abruptly turn right and risk hitting Reyes head on, turn left into the concrete barrier at an estimated 50 miles an hour, and risk hitting Reyes anyway, or try to slow down and hope Reyes stops before he got to Stallworth’s lane.

Look, virtually every single story about the facts of the accident has said that while Stallworth was drunk and driving over the limit, the pedestrian was running across a busy street while not in a crosswalk. That’s pretty much a universal fact of all the reports. That fact, plus the statements of the attorneys, is enough to convince me that the judge probably saw enough culpability in the actions of the victim to allow for leniency for Stallworth. An accident like this could easily have unfolded in the exact same way had Stallworth been stone cold sober.

Zach says:

Right, and I still dont understand the part where he had enought time to see the guy, flash his lights, yet continue to speed.

“or try to slow down and hope Reyes stops before he got to Stallworth’s lane.”

And if he wasnt DRUNK thats what would have happened, too bad he was drunk and continued to speed and kill the guy

Again, dude:

There were mitigating factors. Apparently, the district attorney was convinced enough that he accepted that plea. I’ll take his opinion over yours.

Zach says:

There are mitigating factors in every case, didnt some judge in Vermont give a guy who sexually abused a child 10 days in jail? But i guess you take his opinion as the right decision

i dont watch fox but here it is; got some of the details wrong but no need to post those here

Not remotely the same.

O’Reilly’s rantings aside, the judge in that case intentionally sentenced Hulett to a tiny sentence to prove a political point. He gave the guy 60 days because the judge believed the state had a responsibility to give this child molester some sort of psychological treatment, and the state wouldn’t.

Once the state department of corrections agreed to provide the treatment, the judge in the case changed the sentence to 3-10 years.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Edward_Cashman

It’s dubious, but not as horrendous as O’Reilly portrayed.

Drew says:

He had time to flash his lights though.. I’ve been on all those causeways hundreds of times when I lived in Miami Beach. Homeless people, Hispanic workers and people on their bikes are plentiful. Accidents happen, however, accidentally killing someone should warrant a sentence of more than 30 days of your life.
It’s obvious you have more faith in our legal system than I do, it doesn’t make you wrong, it just makes us disagree.

ChrisS says:

Apparently you’re one of those people that have everything figured out, but everyone else is just too stupid to realize how right you are despite you being largely ignorant and incidental to the actual event.

Gotcha.

Drew says:

Hey, you’re right I’m wrong. Is that what you want me to say? We have differing opinions, I’m stating why I feel the way I do. I’m not ignorant, way to go on the insult though. Your a big boy now.

Man, Sox is beating the crap out of the Marlins

pc69 says:

Just get the feeling the Yankees are toying with this team. Even up 2-0 and as poor as they are hitting with RISP, this game is already over.

ASU up 5-0 bottom of 5. Leake in control so far.

JobaWockeeZ says:

Yeah agreed. We’ve got CC on the mound, Bruney back and Mo is well rested. Any lead is basically game.

JobaWockeeZ says:
Dorian says:

What exactly is your defintion of “toying” again?

JobaWockeeZ says:

Oh I got it we wanted to make the game close unlike the 15-0 Mets game so it can be exciting. They got it planned for a 9 run inning again.

whozat says:

All Posada’s fault right now. How could he not be telling CC to throw strikes?!?!

LiveFromNewYork says:

JoPo wants to get back at fans for all that Hip Hip shit. That is so annoying.

whozat says:

I will say that a 9 pitch AB ending in a single for Wil Nieves is kinda unimpressive.

whozat says:

Ok, THAT was horrendous.

Jayson Williams says:

that was unexpected

Tony says:

Yay, another bullshit home run burns them.

Drew says:

lol u say bullshit, i say bad pitch to a bad hitter.

Tony says:

Pop flies from Anderson Hernandez become 3-2 games.

pc69 says:

And there you go. 3-2 Nationals.

Dave says:

Fuck this ballpark

pc69 says:

Was a cheap HR but that was a terrible pitch by CC. Can’t touch his fastball and he is fucking around with a slider.

VO says:

I have found why Posada can’t call games, the pitchers heard that he pee’s on his hands so they don’t want to touch the same ball as him.

Dela G says:

holy crap!

i can’t believe the nationals are leading this

pc69 says:

I can. they got schooled by Nieves on Saturday. Yanks play to the level of their competition. There is not much effort out there tonight, like a spring training game.

Charlie says:

Really CC? Anderson Hernandez? Who the fuck is that guy anyway? Might of been cheap, but still. I was hoping we could blow this game open at some point but those 3 runs are gonna make that a lot harder.

Brazilian Yankee says:

Can anyone justify pitching inside to guy who hit a rocket on an inside pitch in his previous AB? Posada is plain dumb.

Drew says:

I know, I hate when Posada hangs a pitch.

Brazilian Yankee says:

There was no reason to pitch the guy inside. No reason. Unless he was not paying attention to the game and didnt see the same batter smoke a pitch inside for a double. But he does call a great game… that Posada, what a great catcher.

They threw three straight pitches on the outside there. Why is throwing a pitch inside a big deal?

Nady Nation says:

Are you kidding? How about CC executes a pitch to ANDERSON F’ING HERNANDEZ! The fact that you blame Posada for that HR is a complete joke.

LiveFromNewYork says:

Has there EVER been that much criticism of Jorge prior to the past few weeks? I know Mussina always used Molina but I don’t remember it being talked about so much as it has been lately.

Pasqua says:

Goes to show that it only takes one or two stories on a slow baseball news day to convince people of something that they had never previously considered.

Apologies if you have considered it prior to this week.

Ivan says:

No problem, Yanks are still winning this game.

What do you say? 3…4 runs this inning?

Lily says:

wow we’re down to the nationals. second big league homerun, of course in our ball park fk it i hate this park

Reggie C. says:

Lets see Teix and Arod wake up now …

Pasqua says:

I know there’s a lot of baseball left to be played tonight, but I think this is the angriest I’ve been all year. I recognize that anything can happen in any given game, but there is no reason why the Yanks shouldn’t obliterate this team…especially with CC pitching. That it is even a game right now is grating on me.

V says:

Pick another sport to follow. A sport that you can pretty much guarantee the best team will obliterate the worst team 999 times out of a 1000. Say, football.

In baseball, anything can happen. The Nationals suck, yes, but they’ve still won games. Sometimes against good teams.

And this game ain’t over, at all.

Pasqua says:

As I pointed out in my post, anything can happen, yes…

But it’s still f’n grating.

Did you really go into tonight’s game thinking, “Anything can happen,” or, “We should sweep these guys”? Honestly.

And, again, I know the game’s not over. I’m not that kind of fan.

I Remember Celerino Sanchez says:

I honestly didn’t think the Yanks would sweep. It’s baseball. The Nats have one of the best hitting teams in baseball (look at the stats of the guys in the lineup).

Charlie says:

our 2-3-4 hitters are all slumping. Not a good combo.

I officially dub John Flaherty Johnny Repeat because he repeats the same shit constantly.

jonathan says:

3 run “shot” to the no name #9 hitter of the worst team in the majors….CC must hate this park.

“3 run “shot” to the no name #9 hitter of the worst team in the majors one of the best hitting teams in the majors….CC must hate this park.”

Fixed.

With a loss to Nieve on Saturday, a 15 run shutout against Santana on Sunday this team teaches us to expect nothing.

If we keep stranding runners, we’re gonna lose this game

Jake H says:

A Rod is a black hole in the lineup right now.

A black hole who’s OBPing .364 and slugging .471 over the past 7 days.

We should have a mute button for stupid posters.

DGeezy says:

im so tired of matsui hitting weak ground balls

jonathan says:

this is really not good, everyone in the lineup except for cano decided to take a nap tonite….if I were CC and I lose this game…it get burned into my mind for when my walk option comes up…remember that time we could even beat the nats!!

It’s the top of the 6th. Step back from the ledge.

V says:

I wish we had a mute button for stupid posters.

Lily says:

this team is so frustrating to watch. can’t hit when they need to. they should have saved some runs frim sundays game

Pasqua says:

Did anybody catch the stat earlier tonight from Kay that the Yanks are 18-3 against rookie pitchers since ‘07? Considering that tonight (so far) reminds me a lot of how they perform against the newbies, I have trouble believing that one. But I guess we tend to remember the frustration more than the satisfaction in those situations.

Jayson Williams says:

they need to visit schools and heart transplant patients every week

promises made to the young and/or sick = motivation

Like the time Paul O’Neill hit two home runs for little Jimmy.

Zach says:

inside the park doesnt count :)

Ivan says:

Actually Cramer told the kid that O’Neil promise him he would hit 2 homers.

Accent Shallow says:

Even if they can’t get any more off Martis, he’s at 98 pitches . . . they’re about to get into the soft underbelly of the Nats’ pen.

(And believe me, that is one soft underbelly)

YankeeScribe says:

We could really use one of those cheap solo homers right now

dkidd says:

tavares and dukes on the same team means double the crazy

Dela G says:

wow we can’t do sheet against this guy

pc69 says:

6 innings of 4 hit ball. This team is comical. Now they will press and keep knocking this shit out of just like those three outs.

This is why they can’t beat Boston, no hitting.

3rd in average, 3rd in OBP, 1st in SLG, 2nd in runs, 1st in HRs. Yeah, they can’t hit at all.

V says:

I REALLY wish we had a mute button for stupid posters.

Accent Shallow says:

Prediction: the Yankees will win at least one game against Boston this year.

Related point: why is hitting/pressing/comedic ability only a problem against the Red Sox?

pc69 says:

Matt ACTY – second game in 4 days that someone they should blister is handling them.

I realize the game is not over but seriously, the Nationals? They are as good as the Georgia Peaches from the woman’s league.

Accent, not sure I get what you are saying.

Shit happens, it’s baseball. It’s also only the 7th inning and they’re only down by one to an awful ‘pen. The sky ain’t fallin’ yet, Chicken Little.

I Remember Celerino Sanchez says:

Why, exactly, should we “blister” a guy with a 1.349 WHIP?

No hitting? Are you serious?

Jake H says:

man this team is frustrating.
