Game 64: A Natinal Incident

By

Lord help us if it ever reads “New Ork” on the Yanks road jerseys.

The Yanks begin a three-game set tonight against the worst team in the league. With just 16 wins, they have 11 fewer wins than Arizona, Oakland, and Baltimore, which are all in a tie for the second fewest wins. Yeep. This is mostly due to their horrible pitching staff, which will be exposed, to say the least, at the Stadium.

Taking the hill for the Nats tonight will be 22-year-old Shairon Martis. He’s made 12 starts this year for a total of 69.2 IP, striking out just 28 and walking 29. That’s not how you want to approach the Yankees. This has led to 39 earned runs for an ERA of 5.04.

The Yanks will counter with their ace, CC Sabathia. CC pitched masterfully for seven innings against the Sox last time out, but allowed two runners in the eighth which led to the Sox retaking the lead. Such is life. While the Nats have a good lineup, the Sox they are not.

Sorry for the short game thread tonight. I’m headed up to the game to meet some old friends.

Lineup:

1. Derek Jeter, SS
2. Johnny Damon, LF
3. Mark Teixeira, 1B
4. Alex Rodriguez, 3B
5. Robinson Cano, 2B
6. Jorge Posada, C
7. Hideki Matsui, DH
8. Nick Swisher, RF
9. Melky Cabrera, CF

And on the mound, number fifty-two, CC Sabathia.

Moose Season: The Pennsylvania General Assembly passed a “noncontroversial” resolution today in honor of Mike Mussina’s career and recent retirement. The full text is available here. Apparently, Moose coaches Little League near his home. I wonder if he has a dry-erase board for the little kids. -Ben

slade heathcott in the house tonight!

  2. J.R. says:

I do love it when they trot out the “A” lineup.

So…you’re saying he’ll throw six shutout innings at minimum?

  4. pat says:

Apparently the Nats lead the league in walks, that is not something I would have guessed.

  5. Lily says:

i will be dissappointed is the yankees don’t sweep this team. but then again we all know how they yankees play when its against pitchers they have never seen before. they tend to make them look like cy young

  6. In 2 career starts against the Nationals, CC’s faced 61 batters in 16.1 innings and given up a combined 3 runs.

    They’re batting .170/.250/.189 against him.

That includes a complete game 5-hit, 9 K shutout last August for the Brewers.

  7. Zach says:

Christian Guzman DH? Why wouldnt Dunn DH?

  8. mick says:

I’m off topic but why hasn’t Brackman been pitching in Charleston? Is he hurt?

  9. Dorian says:

Wish I was at Waterfront park tonight.

  10. Mike Axisa says:

    Love those one pitch outs.

  11. That mustache and soul patch can only mean one thing:

That’s not Nick Johnson… it’s Evil Nick Johnson.

  12. Mike Axisa says:

Love it, six pitches. Thanks for saving the bullpen an inning.

  13. Charlie says:

I expect nothing less than a shutout for CC & 8 runs from our offense… our A lineup against a horrible team with our ace on the hill. We better win this game, it’s practically a gift.

  14. I really thought they were gonna wear their road greys with “Washingtn” on the front.

The reason the Natinals left the “O” off their jerseys? All the “O”s in the city were used up in Barack Obama campaign posters.

  15. Mike Axisa says:

How many homers for Dunn this series? I say six. That’s a reasonable number for a three game series in a bandbox, right?

  16. Fred says:

This is already a win tonight because Veras is gone.

  17. More fun with FanGraphs:

The Nationals have a team ERA of 5.34 but a team FIP of 4.78. That +0.56 E-F is the largest in baseball.

Probably because their team UZR/150 of -8.0 is the worst in baseball.

The guys behind their pitchers aren’t doing a good job of limiting runs scored by converting balls in play into outs.

  18. pat says:

Haha, I love it, they show cervelli on the bench he’s not paying attention to the game, he’s just looking over scouting reports.

  19. JobaWockeeZ says:

CC gave up a hit to the Natinals?!?!?!? Bust.

  20. Mike Axisa says:

That was some serious english on that ball.

  21. Heh. Cue shot.

    Adam Dunn = Minnesota Fats

  22. pat says:

That was a RIDICULOUS amount of spin.

  23. nmc says:

Sorry if this is off-topic, but Youkilis took the lead over Teixeria in the All-Star Vote. Can you guys rally some kind of internet groundswell to make sure that Teix starts over the greek god of chins?

  24. Adam Dunn didn’t slide hard into second base, spikes up, because he doesn’t have a passion for the game and doesn’t really like baseball.

    /Riccardi’d

  25. pc69 says:

If this game gets boring, you can switch to ASU/Texas…Root for the Sun Devils not Steroid University Longhorns, I mean Roger Clemens Longhorns.

  26. Mike Axisa says:

When Robbie Cano is lacing balls to left-center, that’s a good sign.

  27. dkidd says:

did i mishear or did flaherty say the complete opposite of what he said re posada not using scouting reports?

  28. Ivan says:

I was thinking this the other day,

The Tigers in 03 finish with by far with the worst record in baseball, so how did they didn’t get the the top pick in the 04 draft?

  29. Stryker says:

michael kay: “i don’t like being touched”

    that’s why he’s a 48 year old bachelor.

  30. Mike Axisa says:

Nick Swisher’s such a bump. Drawing a walk in that spot? If he was a team player he would have grounded out to the right side to get a run home.

  31. Justin says:

I’m spending the summer in DC, so I’m watching the game on the Nats’ channel (MASN). They were just talking about A-Rod, and complimenting his ability and accomplishments, and didn’t even hint at anything regarding steroids. I thought that was interesting, and also quite refreshing. Even the away announcers are over it.

    • Stryker says:

      very refreshing. good to hear.

i’m pretty sure had the roberts book not absolutely BOMBED it’d be a bigger deal.

      • Justin says:

Agreed, I think the way the media and the public received her book was their way of saying “alright, we’re moving on”.

    • bizarrojamie says:

I’m watching MASN also, due to being stuck with whichever feed my cable company decides to pick up. Have you noticed how they’re obsessed with the salaries, and costs of everything?

  32. pat says:

    Wow, that throw was damonesque.

  33. Mike Axisa says:

Hard to believe Adam Dunn was once a highly recruited quarterback with a full ride to Texas. Where’d the arm go?

  34. pc69 says:

Ok, it is early but bases loaded, 1 out against the Nationals and they come away with 1 run. Yikes.

    • Ivan says:

      No worries.

When facing a bad team like this, if the yanks pitch well, they will sweep the series, the offense will bash their skulls in eventually.

    • whozat says:

Is that really a “yikes”? Man on third, less than two outs…they get a sac fly from your nine hitter to bring Jeter to the plate with a RISP.

I do wish that Jeter had done more this game.

  35. pc69 says:

Mike Leake – 1.34 ERA entering the game with Texas – 4 strike out already, through 2 innings – 2 walks and 1 hit.

  36. dkidd says:

good lesson for all the haters. when your team is 30 games under .500 in june, you appreciate talent

  37. Mike Axisa says:

Here’s something I hadn’t considered … is CC an all star?

    • Ivan says:

      I don’t think so.

      Felix,
      Halladay,
      Verlander,
      Greinke,
      Edwin Jackson,
      Bedard.

      • Zach says:

All Star is tough for pitchers, do the managers/players vote on history/reputation or performance to date? Has he been top 5 this year? His numbers probably say no, but by the end of the year his numbers will even out and say yes.

        • Ivan says:

Allstars for SP’s are really midseason awards. CC might have the better season when the season ends but right now currently, those are the six pitchers who are pitching better than him right now.

          • Zach says:

Yeah, thats why I hate the whole “oh but he wasnt elected to 10 all star games in his career” becuase one or two starts can just blow up your numbers as a pitcher, and like you said its only judging half a season

    • Andy In Sunny Daytona says:

I hope not. He’s probably not going to start, so I hope he stays home and relaxes, same with everyone else.

    • whozat says:

Eh…how many starters usually make the team? If they didn’t have anyone else that would be there, then he’d be fine as the mandatory one-per-team guy, but…with Grienke, Halladay (though he might miss for health reasons?), Weaver, Verlander, even Edwin Jackson…I think there are other guys that might deserve it more.

    • How many starters are on the staff? 6?

I’d say, in order, the best AL starters have been:
      Zack Grienke
      Roy Halladay
      Justin Verlander
      Edwin Jackson
      Jered Weaver
      Erik Bedard
      Cliff Lee
      CC Sabathia

I don’t think he makes it.

  38. pat says:

Oddly enough it was veras who was first to come to Bruney’s aid in his dustup with krod.

  39. Moshe Mandel says:

The AG has nice numbers in his small sample. Good for him.

  40. Ivan says:

Pete Abe said something interesting on his blog:

“The Yankees were 32-31 after 63 games last season. They were 32-31 in 2007, too.”

The yanks 36-27, despite the fact they are 0-8 against the sox. That’s interesting and impressive.

    • Justin says:

Definitely. And we’ve still yet to see this team really fire on all cylinders. When everything clicks, we’re gonna be a scary team.

  41. dkidd says:

larry bowa is ashamed of his nephew for missing that throw

  42. Andy In Sunny Daytona says:

Does Zimmerman win “The Player Who Looks-Like-His-Manager-The-Most Award”?

  43. Justin says:

    Yeah Robbie!

  44. Bernard says:

So considering how putrid the Nats bullpen has been this year, why the hell hasn’t Tyler Clippard gotten a shot out there? Look at his minor league stats (they turned him into a reliever this year): 22 G, 36.2 IP, 0.99 ERA, 0.96 WHIP, 41 K, 16 BB, 2 HR. He’s also 3-1 with a save, not that it really matters. Perhaps, that hesitation hitch step in his delivery is more suited to the bullpen and is a lot more deceptive when you only see Clippard one time.

  45. pc69 says:

Nick Johnson looks like the brother on I Love Earl, except he has the Earl porn stache.

  46. Ivan says:

Of all the major sports in the US, a bad baseball team just looks so damn pathetic.

    • Zach says:

      Detroit Lions?

    • pc69 says:

That because all the other sports can mask ineptness – look at the NBA, has to be the worst sport to watch of all. Bad officiating, bad basketball, no offensive flow, just dunks and tats and a bunch of guys who slap like bitches when they fight.

      • Ivan says:

That’s totally not true. The NBA ALOT better than years ago.

For crying out loud, You have two of the best players in the NBA since the Bird/Magic days with LeBron and Kobe, You have the most Dynamic PG Since Magic arguebaly in Chris Paul, Offense is up a couple years now.

        • Zach says:

Offense is up because defense is down, traveling has disappeared, and superstars get to the foul line 8-10 times a game

        • pc69 says:

Perhaps, but I don’t pay to watch Kobe dribble for 15 seconds, drive the lane and get fouled every single time. I don’t pay to watch big guys tackle each other under the basket and no foul is called but a point guard puts his hand on a guys hip and it is a foul.

Most important, you cannot compare Kobe the alleged rapist and LeBron to Magic and Bird or even Jordan, not even in the same ball park.

          It is just very unwatchable.

          • Ivan says:

Michael Jordan use to get every single call known to man.

I watch alot of NBA, as a knick fan, Jordan had refs eating out of his hands AND he knew that.

Kobe is gonna get his share of star treatment but not as much as you think it is, especially compared to Jordan.

  47. pat says:

Hey Tommie what do u think of Jordan Hill? Apparently Donnie W has a man crush on him?

    • Ivan says:

If your the Knicks, you can do better than Jordan Hill?

    • Bernard says:

I’m going to be very depressed if the Knicks don’t end up with my mancrush Curry – emaciated girly men ftw

    • donttradecano says:

      My ideal draft:

      1st: Jennings/Lawson

then purchase or trade for a 2nd round pick (which supposedly Walsh is looking to do) to get one of Danny Green/Jeff Adrien/Chris Johnson. Since there supposedly looking to bring in TMac for one year, lets say for arguments sake they resign Lee and Nate then send one of the two plus someone with a big contrat to Houston for TMac. Your 2010 lineup looks as followed:

      PG: Jennings/Lawson
      SG: Tmac
SF: Al Harrington (if hes not traded)
      PF: Wilson Chandler
      C: who the hell knows.

      Bench: Nate/Lee
      Bench: Green/Adrien/Johnson
      Bench: Gallinari

      • The rumor is we’re going to sign and trade Lee to the Pistons for Amir Johnson and the #15 pick.

I’ll take that in a cocaine heartbeat.

      • donttradecano says:

meant 2009, obviously Lebron replaces Harrington in 2010.

      • Ivan says:

Why sign T-Mac coming off Micro-Facture surgery, who by the way is 30 years old.

        • donttradecano says:

          1) Its only for a year
          2) TMac maybe gets you to the playoffs
          3) It probably gets rid of eddy curry and his massive contract.

          • Zach says:

            Expiring contract, yes.
He’s going to miss the first 20 games next year, then his shoulder will hurt and miss 10, then his foot will hurt and miss 15, then back spasms and miss 12. so no playoffs
They’re not taking Curry’s contract, why would they do that?

I agree trade for him, just because his expiring contract, no chance of unloading Curry though

            • donttradecano says:

“The Knicks could put together a package that would save the Rockets some money and include a veteran shooting guard with an expiring contract — Larry Hughes ($13.6M) — along with Cuttino Mobley’s 80-percent insured $9.5M deal. Mobley could then officially retire with the team that drafted him (and originally knew about his heart condition). Call it full circle. Newsday”

Theres the idea, you wouldnt give up nothing for TMac?

And on the Curry front, someone will take on his contract with the idea they can get him to produce. Maybe not Houston but eventually someone will.

              • Zach says:

I’m all for trading for TMac, dont know what their plans are though. Are they keeping Artest? Because if not they neeI’m all for trading for TMac, dont know what their plans are though. Are they keeping Artest? Because if not they need to replace what 35+ points a night (artest/tmac)

Curry has to get on the floor and actually look healthy though, I understand A team will think they can get him to produce, but you also have every team in the league trying to cut payroll for summer 2010d to replace what 35+ points a night (artest/tmac)

  48. Jamal G. says:

    Really, Hideki? Bah.

  49. pat says:

I wonder how many mets fans are going into their orioles series thinking it’s gonna be a cake walk. Wait until they find out those damn O’s can HIT.

  50. ArodMVP217 FTW! says:

yea, i thought melk could have laid out for that, whatevs

  51. Dela G says:

did michael kay just say that 8 * 4 is 36?

    hahahha

  52. LiveFromNewYork says:

At this rate CC can pitch again tomorrow.

  53. dkidd says:

is there someone in the boston areas who can contact nick green and remind him that he is nick green?

  54. Drew says:

I can’t believe the Sammy Soser used teh juice!!!1

  55. Jefree says:

Swisher is an on base machine

  56. jonathan says:

Big Sloppy hit another homer this one off of Chris Volstad, I swear to god if he told another f-ing curtain call….congrads you hit a homer….at this rate you might get 15 this year.

  57. LiveFromNewYork says:

It feels almost uncomfortable to watch this game.

  58. Jack says:

What is wrong with Jorge Posada? CC has only thrown 34/46 pitches for strikes with just 1 strikeout! 3 hits allowed! That is unacceptable. If Cerveli had been catching tonight, CC would have a no hitter going and Cerveli would have gritted out 7 infield singles!

  59. Charlie says:

    that was ball 4

  60. Charlie says:

so was that.. this ump is really bad

  61. whozat says:

Crap. Well, 83 pitches in 4 innings is more like it.

  62. Zach says:

Anyone see Donte Stallworth got 30 days in jail for DUI manslaughter? It’s amazing what money can do for someone

    • Dela G says:

as a brotha without any money i know if i did that, i would be in jail more years than OJ :)

    • pat says:

      No shit, absolutely disgusting.

    • Drew says:

ridiculous. You know, I mentioned that last night. I read it would be short. But, 30 fucking days!? holy shit.

      • Drew says:

You know, not to start a animal rights spat but, Mike Vick, responsible for the deaths of many dogs for the use of sport. Stallworth, kills one father.
I know dogs are pets, but I don’t see the logic in our law system.

        • Zach says:

Vick wasnt convicted one just one charge was he? Wasnt it dog fighting, illegal gambling, etc? But no doubt, the situations are messed up, now i dont think Goodell can suspend Vick, if he does he needs to give Stallworth like 5 times the suspension

        • ChrisS says:

Vick intentionally killed and tortured dogs for sport.

As tragic as it is, Stallworth was drinking and had a fatal accident. It was still an accident. If Donte got into his car, did a shot of Patron, told his buddies, “Hey watch, how much will you give me if I mow this guy down?” I can see a reason for a harsher sentence.

    • Anyone see Donte Stallworth got 30 days in jail for DUI manslaughter? It’s amazing what money can do for someone.

No, it was a tragic accident, but the reason he only got 30 days is that while he was driving drunk, the guy who he hit leaped out into traffic. The judge rightly reasoned that the victim’s own negligent actions contributed to his death.

After Stallworth spent the night drinking at a bar in Miami Beach’s Fountainebleau hotel, police said he hit Reyes, a construction crane operator who was rushing to catch a bus after finishing his shift at about 7:15 a.m.

Stallworth told police he flashed his lights in an attempt to warn Reyes, who was not in a crosswalk when he was struck.

Stallworth had a blood-alcohol level of .126 after the crash, well above Florida’s .08 limit. Stallworth stopped after the crash and immediately told officers he had hit Reyes. Police estimated Stallworth was driving about 50 mph in a 40 mph zone…

After his release from jail, Stallworth must serve two years of house arrest and spend eight years on probation…

Stallworth must also undergo drug and alcohol testing, will have a lifetime driver’s license suspension and must perform 1,000 hours of community service. Lyons said after five years, Stallworth could win approval for limited driving for reasons such as employment.

Lyons noted that Stallworth stopped immediately after the accident, called 911 and submitted to roadside alcohol testing despite spending most of the night drinking at a Miami Beach hotel.

“He acted like a man,” Lyons said. “He remained at the scene. He cooperated fully.”

Miami-Dade State Attorney Katherine Fernandez Rundle cited Stallworth’s lack of previous criminal record, cooperation with police and willingness to accept responsibility as factors in the plea deal. Rundle also said the Reyes family — particularly the victim’s 15-year-old daughter — wanted the case resolved to avoid any more pain.

      http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/.....id=4262751

      • Drew says:

not to get into a whole thing here but, I doubt this man jumped in front of his car. You know, when I drive, and see someone on the side of the road, I usually change lanes, or slowly swerve halfway into the next lane as to avoid any possibility of a person falling off their bike, stumbling into the road, or blah blah. He flashed his lights? You’d think if you found a situation warranting flashing your lights you’d slow down as well.

        • I’ll take the opinions of the judge and prosecuting attorney who actually reviewed the relevant facts of the case over your opinions, thanks.

          • Drew says:

Yes, we know prosecutors are always right.
You should know damn well if you or I did this we’d be facing our prime years behind bars. This dude will miss a couple games.

            • No, we don’t know that.

Read the facts of the case. The guy Stallworth hit was running across a busy highway while not in the crosswalk at not at a stoplight or intersection.

If you or I hit that guy, even if we were drunk, but we had clean driving records, stopped immediately at the scene, alerted police, stayed with the victim, and admitted full culpability, we also probably would get a short jail time and extended probation/suspended sentence.

Read the facts of the case.

              • Drew says:

I have read them many times.
When the causeway is “busy” you won’t be doing 50. That’s a fact. I was late to class many times because of a “busy” causeway. The guy didn’t run into NYC traffic, he’s guilty of jaywalking.

      • Zach says:

Where in that report does it say he leaped in front of the car? Stallworth had time to flash his lights, that means seeing the guy, reaching over and flashing them, all while going 50 in a 40 zone DRUNK.

This wasnt like a young kid running out into traffic chasing a ball and getting hit by a soccer mom.

“but the reason he only got 30 days is that while he was driving drunk”
-So why was it DUI MANSLAUGHTER, and not just DUI?

Did you even read the title of the link you posted? “Financial agreement avoids lawsuit” So like I said, its amazing what money can do

      • Zach says:

“Miami-Dade State Attorney Katherine Fernandez Rundle cited Stallworth’s lack of previous criminal record, cooperation with police and willingness to accept responsibility as factors in the plea deal. Rundle also said the Reyes family — particularly the victim’s 15-year-old daughter — wanted the case resolved to avoid any more pain.

“For all of these reasons, a just resolution of this case has been reached,” Rundle said.”

Thats also from the article, explaining his sentence. No where does it say Reyes leaped infront of traffic and Donte couldnt stop

        • “police said he hit Reyes, a construction crane operator who was rushing to catch a bus after finishing his shift at about 7:15 a.m.”

          Also,

          http://bleacherreport.com/arti.....s-not-show

On March 14th Stallworth hit, and killed, 59-year old Mario Reyes on a causeway linking the city of Miami and Miami Beach.

The last page of the report, a hand drawn diagram of the accident scene, shows Reyes was not in a marked crosswalk. For reasons we may never know, he decided to try and cross the busy road where the east and westbound lanes are divided by a concrete barrier.

The diagram shows the collision was at the front passenger corner of Stallworth’s 2005 Bentley. The Browns wide receiver was in the far left hand lane nearest to the median.

From the diagram his choices at the time appear to have been either to abruptly turn right and risk hitting Reyes head on, turn left into the concrete barrier at an estimated 50 miles an hour, and risk hitting Reyes anyway, or try to slow down and hope Reyes stops before he got to Stallworth’s lane.

Look, virtually every single story about the facts of the accident has said that while Stallworth was drunk and driving over the limit, the pedestrian was running across a busy street while not in a crosswalk. That’s pretty much a universal fact of all the reports. That fact, plus the statements of the attorneys, is enough to convince me that the judge probably saw enough culpability in the actions of the victim to allow for leniency for Stallworth. An accident like this could easily have unfolded in the exact same way had Stallworth been stone cold sober.

          • Zach says:

Right, and I still dont understand the part where he had enought time to see the guy, flash his lights, yet continue to speed.

“or try to slow down and hope Reyes stops before he got to Stallworth’s lane.”

And if he wasnt DRUNK thats what would have happened, too bad he was drunk and continued to speed and kill the guy

          • Drew says:

He had time to flash his lights though.. I’ve been on all those causeways hundreds of times when I lived in Miami Beach. Homeless people, Hispanic workers and people on their bikes are plentiful. Accidents happen, however, accidentally killing someone should warrant a sentence of more than 30 days of your life.
It’s obvious you have more faith in our legal system than I do, it doesn’t make you wrong, it just makes us disagree.

            • ChrisS says:

Apparently you’re one of those people that have everything figured out, but everyone else is just too stupid to realize how right you are despite you being largely ignorant and incidental to the actual event.

              Gotcha.

              • Drew says:

Hey, you’re right I’m wrong. Is that what you want me to say? We have differing opinions, I’m stating why I feel the way I do. I’m not ignorant, way to go on the insult though. Your a big boy now.

  63. zs190 says:

Man, Sox is beating the crap out of the Marlins

  64. pc69 says:

Just get the feeling the Yankees are toying with this team. Even up 2-0 and as poor as they are hitting with RISP, this game is already over.

ASU up 5-0 bottom of 5. Leake in control so far.

  65. whozat says:

All Posada’s fault right now. How could he not be telling CC to throw strikes?!?!

  66. whozat says:

I will say that a 9 pitch AB ending in a single for Wil Nieves is kinda unimpressive.

  67. whozat says:

    Ok, THAT was horrendous.

  68. Jayson Williams says:

    that was unexpected

  69. Tony says:

Yay, another bullshit home run burns them.

  70. pc69 says:

And there you go. 3-2 Nationals.

  71. Dave says:

    Fuck this ballpark

    • pc69 says:

Was a cheap HR but that was a terrible pitch by CC. Can’t touch his fastball and he is fucking around with a slider.

  72. VO says:

I have found why Posada can’t call games, the pitchers heard that he pee’s on his hands so they don’t want to touch the same ball as him.

  73. Dela G says:

    holy crap!

i can’t believe the nationals are leading this

    • pc69 says:

I can. they got schooled by Nieves on Saturday. Yanks play to the level of their competition. There is not much effort out there tonight, like a spring training game.

  74. Charlie says:

Really CC? Anderson Hernandez? Who the fuck is that guy anyway? Might of been cheap, but still. I was hoping we could blow this game open at some point but those 3 runs are gonna make that a lot harder.

  75. Brazilian Yankee says:

Can anyone justify pitching inside to guy who hit a rocket on an inside pitch in his previous AB? Posada is plain dumb.

    • Drew says:

I know, I hate when Posada hangs a pitch.

    • LiveFromNewYork says:

Has there EVER been that much criticism of Jorge prior to the past few weeks? I know Mussina always used Molina but I don’t remember it being talked about so much as it has been lately.

      • Pasqua says:

Goes to show that it only takes one or two stories on a slow baseball news day to convince people of something that they had never previously considered.

Apologies if you have considered it prior to this week.

  76. Ivan says:

No problem, Yanks are still winning this game.

  77. What do you say? 3…4 runs this inning?

  78. Lily says:

wow we’re down to the nationals. second big league homerun, of course in our ball park fk it i hate this park

  79. Reggie C. says:

Lets see Teix and Arod wake up now …

  80. Pasqua says:

I know there’s a lot of baseball left to be played tonight, but I think this is the angriest I’ve been all year. I recognize that anything can happen in any given game, but there is no reason why the Yanks shouldn’t obliterate this team…especially with CC pitching. That it is even a game right now is grating on me.

    • V says:

Pick another sport to follow. A sport that you can pretty much guarantee the best team will obliterate the worst team 999 times out of a 1000. Say, football.

In baseball, anything can happen. The Nationals suck, yes, but they’ve still won games. Sometimes against good teams.

And this game ain’t over, at all.

      • Pasqua says:

As I pointed out in my post, anything can happen, yes…

        But it’s still f’n grating.

Did you really go into tonight’s game thinking, “Anything can happen,” or, “We should sweep these guys”? Honestly.

And, again, I know the game’s not over. I’m not that kind of fan.

        • I Remember Celerino Sanchez says:

I honestly didn’t think the Yanks would sweep. It’s baseball. The Nats have one of the best hitting teams in baseball (look at the stats of the guys in the lineup).

  81. Charlie says:

our 2-3-4 hitters are all slumping. Not a good combo.

  82. I officially dub John Flaherty Johnny Repeat because he repeats the same shit constantly.

  83. jonathan says:

3 run “shot” to the no name #9 hitter of the worst team in the majors….CC must hate this park.

  84. LiveFromNewYork says:

With a loss to Nieve on Saturday, a 15 run shutout against Santana on Sunday this team teaches us to expect nothing.

  85. Charlie says:

Cano loves bad pitchers with mediocre velocity

  86. pat says:

As quick as leads appear they disappear in this park.

  87. teix is the man says:

Look at you Nick JOhnson , u and ur dago mustache!

  88. YankeeScribe says:

If we keep stranding runners, we’re gonna lose this game

  89. Jake H says:

A Rod is a black hole in the lineup right now.

  90. DGeezy says:

im so tired of matsui hitting weak ground balls

  91. jonathan says:

this is really not good, everyone in the lineup except for cano decided to take a nap tonite….if I were CC and I lose this game…it get burned into my mind for when my walk option comes up…remember that time we could even beat the nats!!

  92. Lily says:

this team is so frustrating to watch. can’t hit when they need to. they should have saved some runs frim sundays game

  93. Pasqua says:

Did anybody catch the stat earlier tonight from Kay that the Yanks are 18-3 against rookie pitchers since ’07? Considering that tonight (so far) reminds me a lot of how they perform against the newbies, I have trouble believing that one. But I guess we tend to remember the frustration more than the satisfaction in those situations.

  94. Jayson Williams says:

they need to visit schools and heart transplant patients every week

promises made to the young and/or sick = motivation

  95. jonathan says:

4 hits, 5BB in 5 innings and we have 2 runs to show for it. S-A-D

  96. Don’t piss Elijah off, blue. Dude’s nuts.

  97. Dela G says:

    unbelievable catch by the melkman!

  98. teix is the man says:

    i’m feeling a big inning

  99. teix is the man says:

    i’m feeling a big inning

  100. Accent Shallow says:

Even if they can’t get any more off Martis, he’s at 98 pitches . . . they’re about to get into the soft underbelly of the Nats’ pen.

(And believe me, that is one soft underbelly)

  101. YankeeScribe says:

We could really use one of those cheap solo homers right now

  102. dkidd says:

tavares and dukes on the same team means double the crazy

  103. Dela G says:

wow we can’t do sheet against this guy

  104. pc69 says:

6 innings of 4 hit ball. This team is comical. Now they will press and keep knocking this shit out of just like those three outs.

This is why they can’t beat Boston, no hitting.

  105. Jake H says:

    man this team is frustrating.

  106. Conan says:

4 hits against a guy with an ERA over 5.00 to start the day. They look dead out there.

  107. pc69 says:

And just like the Yankees, ASU blows a 6-0 lead and Leake is gone.

Bad night to root for Sun Devils and Yankees.

  108. I CAN”T BELIEVE WE”RE GONNA GET SWEPT BY THE NATINALS!!!1!11!elevennty!

    /quaid’d

  109. Drew says:

    Love me some Nats pen.

  110. Bob Stone says:

    Good catch by Swish

  111. dkidd says:

    CWM 2009 >>>>>>>>> nationals bullpen

  112. dkidd says:

    villone’s getting his shinebox

  113. Jamal G. says:

    New thread, please.

  114. Charlie says:

We gotta score in the bottom of the seventh.. this is bullshit. And for all those sarcastic “the yankees are in last place! fire girardi” people, tonight is not the night. It’s THE FUCKING WASHINGTON NATIONALS!!!!! It’d be inexcusable to lose to them

  115. DCR says:

Pretty poor showing offensively for the Yankees so far. They need to wake up.

  116. Dave says:

CC should be getting a win here…just a shame. Was a little nervous this could be a trap game/series, cause everyone has taken the nationals very lightly.

  117. Charlie says:

wow, how does this guy have an ERA under 1?

  118. Johnny Repeat strikes again with the “proud of his fastball” comment.

  119. yankeefan91 Arod fan says:

wow i thought that was gonee.

  120. OMG WE’RE LOSING TO THE NATIONALS!!!1111111!!!

  121. JobaWockeeZ says:

That looked like a HR but I’ll take it.

  122. Dela G says:

LETS GO YANKEES! GET YOUR RALLY CAPS ON!

  123. Moshe Mandel says:

    Screw Kay and the cameraman.

  124. pat says:

Haha tavarez you suck. Tex actually had to wait a second on that fastball.

  125. Brandon says:

    In play, run(s) <3

  126. Charlie says:

    there we go.. about time

  127. Accent Shallow says:

    In play, run(s)

    <3worst pen in majors<3

  128. Stormrider6 says:

Seriously, if I ever see John Sterling walking down the street, I might have to punch him in the neck… “IT IS HIGH! IT IS FAR! IT IS… Caught! No! Off the Wall!”

    • Pasqua says:

He misses so many of those because he’s distracted while furiously flipping through his scripts to find the appropriate homerun call.

Good lord, what a shell of a man he’s become.

  129. YankeeScribe says:

Is Tex the only Yankee who can hit with men on base?

  130. Did he really just say taht Alex should look to hit a GB to the right side to move the runner over? Seriously?

  131. RunnerS122 says:

This ump is wildly inconsistent on the edges of the strike zone. I know I should be ok with it being bad for the Nats but I would rather have a consistent one than random balls and strikes

  132. Charlie says:

shit, the rays are on a roll

  133. JobaWockeeZ says:

    Fail boos are fail =/

  134. Bob Stone says:

UGH! A-Rod – What are you doing?

  135. Dave says:

Alex, I don’t hate on you too much, but that was embarrassing.

  136. Charlie says:

    omfg a-rod

  137. Dela G says:

how the eff did alex miss that

  138. SS says:

A-Rod’s in a pretty bad slump.

  139. dkidd says:

he promised the kids he’d hit a triple

  140. Drew says:

    That’s aight Robbie!

  141. Charlie says:

    YEA ROBBIE

  142. Conan says:

A rare sighting tonight – Robinson Cano was just seen getting a hit with a RISP. Alleluia!

  143. Eric says:

Dukes is such a horrid fielder.

  144. Charlie says:

    bruney for the eighth?

  145. Reggie C. says:

yanks definitely caught a break with Dukes manning CF. Whatever happened to Milledge?? Milledge definitely catches Cano’s liner and probably catches Teix’s shot to the wall.

  146. Dela G says:

    CANO!

however, why the hell did he try to go to third…

  147. Charlie says:

    jeter injured?

  148. dkidd says:

    what happened to jeter?

  149. Call up Melvin to play short!

  150. dkidd says:

    bruney’s moustache is awesomely bad

  151. Eric says:

I’m much slower to praise Cano for that AB than most of you are…

    A. He swings at a ball in the dirt on a 2-0 count. He needs to be more disciplined than that. Someone who hits a bunch of singles and never walks will never be a big asset as a hitter, and Cano has the potential to be a big asset. It’s very frustrating.

    B. Almost every single CF in the league catches that ball easily.

    • Robinson Cano’s career slugging percentage is .471 and he has a career IsoP of .168. He’s not a singles hitter.

      • Eric says:

I didn’t mean to imply he’s a singles hitter. Tonight he had about as bad a 4-for-4 game you can have. Someone with those power numbers should be walking on more than 5% of his plate appearances.

        • I Remember Celerino Sanchez says:

Three line drive singles are a bad night (before the double that Dukes should have caught)?!?!?!? Dude, I will take three line drive singles from him every game, thanks.

  152. Accent Shallow says:

Why DH Guzman and not Dunn?

Again, <3 worst pen in majors <3 for coming in and immediately giving up the lead.

  153. LiveFromNewYork says:

Best signing of the year: M.Teix even though no one on the team can pronounce his last name.

    • JobaWockeeZ says:

      But he’s teh curse!!!!!
he obviously maeks this team worse becuz he didnt sign with teh all gritty red sox111 makes no sense tryin to compare him to teh babe but im gonna say this cuz were yankee killers

      /John henry

  154. Seriously, Nick Johnson, shave.

You look ridiculous. Your freinds and family don’t have the heart to tell you.

  155. LiveFromNewYork says:

CC is a horse. But he’s a very well paid horse.

  156. teix is the man says:

    aight cc, nice job!

  157. Charlie says:

i mighta put drob in.. hopefully bruney won’t be rusty.

  158. Mike Axisa says:

Why doesn’t Bruney’s hat have a patch on the back?

  159. pat says:

    bruney’s hat doesn’t have a patch on the back…

  160. Charlie says:

    god this ump sucks

  161. Reggie C. says:

wow. that was a good FB.

  162. LiveFromNewYork says:

Oh Brian we have missed you.

  163. Zach says:

    96 on that one

  164. Charlie says:

    he’s throwing 96

  165. Handtius says:

    I <3 Bruney.

  166. Drew says:

Brunediesel is amped up out there :)

  167. Charlie says:

bruney is so awesome when he’ healthy

  168. dkidd says:

    that was satisfying

  169. LiveFromNewYork says:

    Remember when Bruney sucked?

  170. Accent Shallow says:

    Looks like Bruney’s ok.

  171. I Remember Celerino Sanchez says:

MLBTR has a post up that lists who would be Type A FAs if the season ended now.

Interestingly, both Damon on Nady are on the list.

    http://www.mlbtraderumors.com/.....gents.html

  172. yankeefan91 Arod fan says:

did that lady have a brawl and a beer in her hand.

  173. Mike Axisa says:

I have no idea how anyone every gets a bat on MacDougal’s fastball. That kind of movement with that kind of velo is just sick.

  174. Accent Shallow says:

Hey, it’s Mac the Ninth! Wrong inning, though.

  175. I Remember Celerino Sanchez says:

According to Kay, Jeter left with left ankle “stiffness.”

  176. dkidd says:

    ankle better news than hamstring?

  177. pat says:

    GARDNER KILL

  178. Drew says:

Sounds like Jetes just twisted his ankle a bit, hopefully.

  179. LiveFromNewYork says:

You knew Gardner was going to do that in like 2 seconds. It’s what he does.

  180. Now he steals?!?!? Multiple interrobangs?!?!

  181. See, Brett, THAT’S WHAT YOU DO.

You go on the first pitch.

  182. LiveFromNewYork says:

Swisher doesn’t like the call. Perhaps he should bunt (ducks).

  183. LiveFromNewYork says:

I’ve done that thing that Jeter did and that is painful if you land wrong and it can nag for a while.

  184. JobaWockeeZ says:

If only Gardner has a Swisher-esque OBP. A walk or single will like automatically let him go to second most of the time.

    • Accent Shallow says:

You mean “If only Brett Gardner had better contact skills and more power than Juan Pierre.”

(Actually, he might have more power than Pierre)

  185. Great play, Zimmerman.

  186. LiveFromNewYork says:

    Gardy steal home please.

  187. pat says:

    FUCK YOU JOHN LANNAN

  188. pat says:

you can’t steal home off a guy throwing 96

  189. Andy In Sunny Daytona says:

    Double steal.

  190. pat says:

    BUNT RAMIRO BUNT!!!!!

  191. Drew says:

    Suicide squeeze!11!

  192. teix is the man says:

Ramiro Pena looks like Jorge from the movie Employee of the Month

  193. Drew says:

    lol. Pena ftw!

  194. Mike Axisa says:

Playing for one run in the eighth inning against the Nats …

  195. Accent Shallow says:

<3 worst pen in majors <3

  196. LiveFromNewYork says:

Johnny says I used to look like this pitcher.

  197. Charlie says:

    i love ramiro

  198. If the lead goes to 3+, keep Bruney in?

  199. Drew says:

YES’s graphic shows no one on base. Mo, why does YES suck so bad.

  200. LiveFromNewYork says:

    Ya can’t be hesitating.

  201. pat says:

I feel like whenever tex switches from one side of the plate to the other he always goes buck wild.

  202. Ivan says:

    Teix blow it open.

  203. JobaWockeeZ says:

Wow I think we’re still have not had a game at the NYS without one home run.

  204. I Remember Celerino Sanchez says:

According to Kay, this is the first game since May 6 that the Yanks didn’t homer.

  205. Surprised Mo didn’t get that call.

  206. Charlie says:

    shut em down Mo

  207. LiveFromNewYork says:

nice job by Jorge Posada? No such animal.

  208. Drew says:

    ugh… umpires

  209. Charlie says:

whatever happened to a spillover thread?

  210. Mike Axisa says:

Robbie Cano’s best game of the season, on both sides of the ball.

  211. Sparkling game by Cano both at the plate and in the field tonight. Well done.

  212. Drew says:

Cano’s so lazy, he didn’t even get his jersey dirty on that play.

  213. LiveFromNewYork says:

    Mo throws down the middle.

  214. BUT JORGE IS BAD AT FRAMING!!!!!

  215. LiveFromNewYork says:

This is the type of guy who homers off Mo.

  216. Zach says:

Cant help the team with the bat on your shoulders Adam

  217. LiveFromNewYork says:

    I love Tony Pena.

  218. pat says:

pena is so much better than jeter.

  219. Drew says:

    What a play by Pena!

  220. Accent Shallow says:

    Yay Mo! Yay win!

Now I know how to get a game thread without spillovers — play the Nationals.

  221. Handtius says:

POSADA IS SUCH A SHITTY CATCHER1!1

  222. Zach says:

Krod gets out of the jam, damn

  223. The Artist says:

Oh goodie, now we get Russ Salzberg.

  224. Zach says:

Ron Villone has 4 loses on the season, only 5R(4ER) allowed ha wow

  225. Moshe Mandel says:

Who called this game? Exquisitely pitched game. Whoever was calling the pitches had the hitters off balance all night, even though neither CC or Mo had their best stuff.

  226. Jim Leyritz says:

Great call by Posada leading CC back to the same place he lead up the doubble earlier eh? He’s such a great game manager. Give the weakling the only pitch he can hit out of the park. In a whiffle ball stadium.

  227. Brian Harvey says:

Moose is coaching Little League in Williamsport PA. My manager at work has sons that are about the same age as Mussina’s and they played on the same little league team as his. He would always give the kids Yankees stuff and treat them to extra googies and now his kids are Yankees fans (who now live in New Hampshire)
