• alan

Which team will it be against?

    • Zach

      at Atlanta

  • http://bronxbaseballdaily.com Matt ACTY/BBD

So, because of this, do you send Phil down to SWB but call him back up if Wang fucks it up in five days? His option has already been used correct?

    • pat

      Yup.

      • http://www.theyankeeuniverse.com/ The Artist

Options at that point would be Sergio Mitre, Casey Fossum, and Kei. . no, just those two.

        • JMK

I realize Kei was nothing but a disappointment the last two seasons, but he did quite well in AAA last year and has pitched well there again this year with the exception of a few starts. Is it just negative feelings of Kei that lead people to say there’s no way he can pitch in the big leagues for us this year, or is there another reason?

    • Accent Shallow

If you send Hughes down, he has to stay down for 10 days, unless he’s recalled to replace an injured player.

      • http://www.theyankeeuniverse.com/ The Artist

Phil can back up Wang until he shows us he can give the team some length.

  • pat

Hopefully the extra out we got that inning carries over to the next one.

    /crosses fingers

  • BklynJT

So how do we rate Wang’s performance/ It seemed as if everything worked against him that 5th inning.

    • http://www.theyankeeuniverse.com/ The Artist

A step forward, against a decent hitting team.

  • Accent Shallow

I’d imagine we see Hughes/assorted relievers in the 6th?

Also, would it kill the Yankees to score, say, 11 runs in the bottom of this inning?

  • Ashish Skaria

Hughes would’ve pitched better. Why waste his arm? If he’s not going to start in the majors, SEND HIM DOWN!!!!

  • Tom Zig

Longest outing of the season against a pretty solid offense…I’ll take it. We also still have a chance to win this. 3 Runs in this ball park against this pitching staff with this offense shouldnt be an arduous task.

  • Ivan

Wang pitch well enough to warrant another start.

    • Accent Shallow

I think so. Hopefully he can build on this.

  • Brazilian Yankee

I thought Wang did good today. He didn’t catch a break on that last inning. It started with Pena not handling Posada’s throw that would have been an out. THen the ump missed an easy out call. Then Brainless Melky showed up and Johnson got that triple when it should have been a single. Under normal circunstances Wang would have pitched 5 innings or 1 run ball, and thats good.

    • Zach

Should have been a single? Were you watching that ball it kept cutting and cutting left, he wouldnt have cut it off

      • http://www.theyankeeuniverse.com/ The Artist

Melky should have chased it down, he could have cut it off if he went back with it. By diving, he turned a single/double into a triple, and Nick Johnson is not exactly Brett Gardner.

  • Tom Zig

    There we go Cano

  • Ant

    Robbbbieeee!!!

  • http://www.riveraveblues.com Mike Axisa

Wow, Robbie went down and got that one.

  • Hova

Let’s go get some hits off this bastard. Why do we like making no-name pitchers look good? Need to crush these guys, especially when they come into our house.

    • Dela G

Lannan is actually really good, but the yankees need to wake the fuck up

      • Hova

Good enough to one hit our lineup through 5 innings?

        • http://www.riveraveblues.com Mike Axisa

          Obviously.

        • http://bronxbaseballdaily.com Matt ACTY/BBD

          114 ERA+ for his career.

  • alan

Big way to get the 1st hit!

  • http://bronxbaseballdaily.com Matt ACTY/BBD

Fuck your no hitter, Johnny boy.

Keep it rollin’ Yanks! Get CM a W!

  • pc69

Yankee stadium gift to eliminate teh ultimate embarrassment of being no hit.

    • Hova

Haha. That was a pop fly at the old stadium. Pitchers must hate this place.

      • pc69

1.5 billion well spent. Like buying a car from GM – shiny and pretty but the guts of it suck.

      • V

        No, no it wasn’t.

Wow, when I think people can’t get dumber…

  • Nickel

    He’s not a machine! He’s a man!!

  • Drew

    WOOT WOOT!

  • John

OK Robbie got it started…let’s continue this

  • Tom Zig

    Lannan just said: Oh shit

  • http://bronxbaseballdaily.com Matt ACTY/BBD

So if Kay hits the ball into a clown’s mouth, is he hitting it into his own mouth?

  • Manimal

I am so pumped for the second half of the year. CC, AJ, Cano,Tex, ect they are all significant better in the second half.

    • Manimal

      Significantly*

    • Drew

you forgot the best player in the league.

      • Hova

Pujols is the best player in the league

        • Drew

debatable. Also, I said league, as in, American League.

          • Hova

Agreed. ARod is the best play in the AL.

    • JobaWockeeZ

The Yankees as a team are typically better in the second half. A lot of times they seem like a terrible team int he first half but in recent years save for last year they come back from like 5 game deficits to get to first place. I too am pumped for the second half.

  • pc69

God this team looks fucking dead tonight. WTF!

  • Tom Zig

It’d be nice to maybe take a few pitches.

  • pc69

Well upside, no hitter is gone and Tampa struggled against this team. So there is a comparison.

    • Dela G

      damn, we can’t start anything tonight… :/

  • John

Melky better make up for his mistake next time

  • John

Mike can you please write something bad about the offense so they can wake up

  • V

Just because you fucking idiots keep calling this guy a ‘no name’ doesn’t make him one.

God damn it, I wish uneducated morons would go away, lol.

    • pc69

Nobody is calling Wang or Hughes a “no name”.

      • V

        • pc69

dude that is gross, I have no idea where your palm has been.

          • V

Do you believe that you’re being witty?

            • pc69

Listen cunt muscle, the only thing I believe it that you are a total ass to 99% of the people on here. Whether it is name calling or encouraging them to commit suicide just because you believe in your own superiority. Much like the Yankees lack of offense it is a tired act. That is what I believe.

              • V

I understand why I piss you off.

It’s because you are a fucking idiot.

When I make fun of idiots, I am making fun of you.

                Therefore, it pisses you off.

I apologize for making fun of idiots, idiot.

                • Drew

                  Be nice people.
We all want the same thing here.

              • http://www.riveraveblues.com Mike Axisa

                Easy with the language.

              • cgs

Yeah, a top 5 offense lacks offense, thats logical.

        • Andy

          What’s with the language?

      • pat

No shit, they’re calling Lannan a no name.

    • Dela G

agreed. Lannan is a damn good pitcher….

  • BklynJT

Hey ump, you better gives us back a runner for that blunder in the 5th. I’ll take it in a high leverage situation. Thanks

  • pat

God, corey patterson sucks so much.

  • Nick L

    loving Hughes right now

  • Andy

We really going to say he pitched well? 3 runs in 5 innings vs worst team in history is now good??

    • John

Again, they have pretty good offense and it would have been 1 or 2 runs had either of the following happened:
      1. Pena caught the SB throwout attempt
2.The umpire made the RIGHT call and called him out
      3. Melky doesn’t dive

    • Accent Shallow

Agreed, Wang should have done better than that against the 1899 Cleveland Spiders . . .

Oh, he pitched against the 2009 Washington Nationals? A team with a solid offense and terrible pitching and defense. Oh, ok.

    • http://bronxbaseballdaily.com Matt ACTY/BBD

For the one millionth time: THE NATIONALS ARE A GOOD HITTING TEAM.

    • V

You really don’t do that reading thing good do you?

You DO realize that the Nationals have an above average offense, no?

You DO realize that Pena botched a caught stealing and the umpire gave the Nationals an extra out, right?

God, I fucking swear – you fucking idiots don’t actually WATCH the games.

    • whozat

Did you WATCH the game? Or no?

Wang pitched ok. Not great. Ok.

    • cgs

They are a top of the league offense. Their abysmal record is due to the pitching (outside of Lannan and Jordan Zimmermann). Any lineup with Ryan Zimmerman, Dunn and Johnson, is pretty damn good, and can easily score 3 runs even against the most elite of pitchers. Johan Santana gave up 3 ER to them just the other week.

    • JobaWockeeZ

      …Really?
The Nationals have good offense. Their defense and pitching are terrible. Seriously this last place team argument is really really fail.

    • The Fallen Phoenix

      1. They aren’t the worst team in history.
      2. They actually have a legitimate starting lineup. It’s the defense and pitching that’s awful.

  • Charlie

phil is just flat out nasty. He’s getting better and better every outing

  • Manimal

I love the bullpen Phil Hughes

    • BklynJT

      uh oh, it’s starting

      • Ashish Skaria

i can’t believe this! he belongs in the starting rotation!!!!

        • whozat

True. It’s tough for me look at tonight and say “yeah, this team is better with Hughes in the bullpen/AAA and Wang in the rotation.” But…with 2007 Wang, it is…I guess another couple outings will tell the tale…

        • http://www.theyankeeuniverse.com/ The Artist

YEAH!!! AND THE MORE I SCREAM THIS, THE MORE LIKELY IT IS TO HAPPEN!!!!

  • Charlie

Hughes is laughing at how bad they are

  • Charlie

calm down with the our offense sucks stuff. I’m not saying I’ve never complained, but Lannan is pretty good and once we get to the bullpen we’ll dig in & win this game.

    • Accent Shallow

Only problem with this is that Lannan has thrown 63 pitches through the first pitch of Pena’s at-bat. He could get deep into the game, unless the Yankees make a move soon.

      • Charlie

i didn’t realize the low pitch count, but yes, the yanks will make a move soon in this game

  • BklynJT

hopefully we get to the bullpen before its too late

  • alan

Damn, this series is slowly reminding me of the one we had against the Pirates.

  • YankeeScribe

Lannan is good but the Yanks need to break this trend of getting shut down by pitchers they’ve never faced before.

    • Bob

I don’t care what his name is, we should definately hit this guy. Go johnny!

      • Hova

Duke literally walked over to the ball. Haha. What a headcase.

      • whozat

I don’t care what his name is either, but I also don’t think that anyone who has a name I haven’t heard before should, by definition, be hittable.

    • V

This trend does not exist. It’s in your mind.

      • whozat

Are we sure about that? I’ve never had it proven to me one way or the other. Seems to me that guys with middling stuff and low walk numbers shut the Yankees down pretty easily unless they’ve seen them before.

        • V

What was the stat, that the Yankees were 18-3 or something ridiculous against pitchers they hadn’t seen before?

I guess if someone wanted to go game by game through the logs, and look at pitchers making their first ever start vs. the Yankees, and then labeled them ‘stud’, ‘solid’, ‘ok’, ‘middling’, ‘mediocre minor league fodder’, we could look at it more in depth.

Maybe I’ll do that this weekend, lol.

  • Dela G

good lord we need some sort of hex or good luck, cuz lannan looks like he could go 9

  • Bob

Girardi should’ve started Hughes tonight. Hes being such an idiot putting Wang, the guy with the 7+ era, instead of Hughes, the guy who threw the 8 inning shutout against texas.

  • http://bronxbaseballdaily.com Matt ACTY/BBD

    Let’s go, Swish!

  • pat

Dukes definitely lollygagged after that one.

  • Manimal

    Come on swish!

  • Drew

Why the fuck did they say he slowed down, he was running his ass off. God I hate Kay.

  • YankeeScribe

Can’t score if you don’t swing the bat

  • http://www.riveraveblues.com Mike Axisa

    Too close to take, Swish.

  • http://bronxbaseballdaily.com Matt ACTY/BBD

Maybe a ball, but that’s too close to take.

  • Charlie

    fuck swish

  • Drew

That shit was right over the middle. ugh

  • JMK

I can’t actually see this game since I live in Vermont, am subject to NESN, and can’t afford MLBTV. So I’m dying to know, how did Wang do? I’m not saying stat-wise; I can see that. I mean did his mechanics look better, did his velocity stay up, did his sinkerball lead to grounders? Thanks guys.

    • whozat

I think he left some pitches up, he wasn’t that efficient, but he got a good number of groundball outs. He was still pretty inconsistent, though. He’d look great some times, and then sometimes he’d leave pitches up. And then he grooved one to Dunn which was just dumb.

      • JMK

Well, it sounds like some degree of progress. Thanks again.

    • JobaWockeeZ

Got a lot of grounders. Was lucky too. His sinker was up too but he did use that slider more. He was good today. Could be better with his pitches but it wasn’t a bad outing.

      • JMK

You think he deserves a few more starts? What if he continues to be just mediocre (say an ERA of around the low 5’s), does he get pulled from the rotation?

        • JobaWockeeZ

Yeah another start to see how he does.
But if he gets his ERA down to the 5’s that means he’s been amazing.

    • Drew

With a catch by Pena he may have came out for the sixth. Good showing, look forward to his next start.

  • pc69

In watching Hughes tonight and in his last couple outings, wouldn’t you think that Girardi/Cashman would consider skipping Pettitte until he is healthy and let Hughes throw.

  • whozat

This guy just throws strikes…when they swing, they can’t square it up, and when they don’t…it’s a called strike. How does he DO this?

    • genius

      bad scouting reports

  • Charlie

    mudda fukka

  • http://bronxbaseballdaily.com Matt ACTY/BBD

So if I walk on my knees and shave, think I could get that awesome ice-cream bowl?

  • pc69

Wow V, seriously, with that statement, Pulitzer Prize is awaiting you.

How in the hell is that on Pena? The dude was clearly safe.

    • http://www.theyankeeuniverse.com/ The Artist

Yeah, but in between droning on incessantly about one topic or another, Flaherty always mixes in that funny anecdote or great story about his wild nights partying with one the Yankee greats from those championship teams he was on, so you don’t mind it so much.

      wait a minute.. . .

  • http://bronxbaseballdaily.com Matt ACTY/BBD

  • Tom Zig

“Hughes dropped a deuce on him”

    lmao

  • Sam

Hughes just “dropped a deuce on him” per Kay

    • Arman Tamzarian

      I can’t believe I missed that, I’m glad 3 people caught that

  • whozat

    That curve was DIRTY.

    • whozat

      94 MPH fastball
      89 MPH slider
      78 MPH curve

      Nice.

      • whozat

Though that “slider” is a cutter, I bet. Still. I love the changing speeds.

        • pat

twas a very good series of pitches for the phranchise.

  • http://www.riveraveblues.com Mike Axisa

Heh, Kay just said “Hughes dropped a deuce on him.”

    • Accent Shallow

Wait, a scatological reference not from Cone?

  • pc69

That was a sick pitch. Beautiful.

  • Nickel

Way to go, Phil. That was a sweet curveball.

    haha oh kay…

  • Mike HC

Will anyone give Posada credit for that pitch? Nah, it was all Phil Hughes.

  • http://www.riveraveblues.com Mike Axisa

I’d boo A-Rod too. Everything is his fault.

    • http://bronxbaseballdaily.com Matt ACTY/BBD

A-Rod was on the Grassy Knoll.

      Too soon?

      • Mike HC

        too late

    • JobaWockeeZ

Him and Wang are the source of every team loss of the history of the New York Yankees. Without A-Rod we would be a 100 times better team. If only Cody Ransom did not get injured because he is a fearsome hitter unlike this pansy A-Rod.

      • alan

        LOL.

  • pat

Yankee fans are the absolute worst fuck them, fuck them hard.

  • JobaWockeeZ

As said on 1050 these Yankee fans are spoiled.

    • Mike HC

A-Rod is an admitted PED/steroid user. He cheated. I would not boo him, but I don’t think it is such blasphemy if someone did. A-Rod, over time, will be a major black mark on the league, along with Bonds, Sosa, Mac and Clemens.

      • whozat

They’re not booing him because he did roids six years ago. They’re booing him because he doesn’t get a hit every at-bat.

        • JobaWockeeZ

“They’re booing him because he doesn’t get a hit home run every at-bat.”
Fixed. Nothing wrong about booing for steroids but 99 percent of the people who booed him today will not boo if he hit a HR later int he game. It’s ridiculous booing him when the whole team save for Cano is practically dead. And hey without A-Rod we would likely see a worse Teix.

          • Accent Shallow

Without A-Rod we’d see a worse Tex? Disagree. People don’t seem to realize that Teixeira has always been a slow starter, and A-Rod’s return coinciding with him heating up is just an easy story to write.

        • Mike HC

I think they are booing him because he did steroids, is unlikable, and because he is currently batting .219. Again, I would not boo him, but I can see where some fans would.

      • Arman Tamzarian

Black mark on the league? Really, Really? The league gained unprecedented popularity through player use of PED’s. It’s not a black mark on the league, it’s a black mark for your sense or morality

        • Mike HC

I didn’t realize that ratings and popularity are the measurements of morality.

  • http://bronxbaseballdaily.com Matt ACTY/BBD

Nice play, Zimmerman. But, Alex, that’s what happens when you try to pull outside changeups. I’m excited for when he busts out of this slump.

    • Drew

      +1

  • alan

It would have been better if A-Rod worked the count a little.

    • Drew

ugh, if it’s not Cano or Melky it’s Alex? Come on, let them play baseball, they are good at it. If they see a pitch they think they can hit, they’ll swing.

  • Famous Mortimer

yes please, boo our HOF third baseman nightly because he is slightly following surgery

    • Famous Mortimer

that should read “slightly slumping” of course

    • JobaWockeeZ

HOF? Maybe not because of teh “OMG ROIDS EVENTHOUGH TEH WHOEL LEAGUE DID THEM AT THAT TIME PERIOD!!!!” thing.

    • Accent Shallow

A-Rod’s surgery is making me overthink every slump. Is it just a slump? Does he need some time off for his hip? Does he need the other surgery immediately?

  • whozat

Wait…wtf? Is anyone watching gameday? It’s offering me a replay to watch called “Teixeira diamond robbery”

    • alan

      LMAO!

  • Yankee1010

I think the Yanks saw their new computers in their lockers this year and said, “cool, now we can watch videos of pitchers we’ve never seen before,” only to be told by Matsui, “my brothers, there are far better things for which to use these computers.”

    • pat

      You can shut up now.

      • Yankee1010

It’s not over by any stretch, but it sure would help if they worked the count a little to get into that crappy pen.

        • http://www.riveraveblues.com Mike Axisa

It’s kinda hard to work the count when the guy is pounding the zone like that.

    • JobaWockeeZ

Anything else but 3 perfect games and 20-0 victories is a failure and the Yankees will never become a good team again.

1899 Cleveland Spiders. Look into it.

  • Bob

Well When A-rod gets hot as hell and hits a hr everyday the yankee fans will forget all the boos

    • JobaWockeeZ

When A-Rod becomes that hot those fans that booed him should continue to boo to show some damn decency. You either boo him through his career or you don’t.

    • whozat

Until the first day he DOESN’T hit one, and then he will immediately be booed again. In fact, if he hits a home run to take an early lead, but the pitching gives it up…and then he doesn’t drive in the go-ahead runs AGAIN later in the game, he will be booed.

  • Tom Zig

Now I know people have said it, but is Lannan REALLY that good?

    • pc69

Just pitching a good game tonight. Otherwise, slightly above average.

    • V

      Yes.

    • cjc

      6 era on the road

      • Bob

Yea and that was the same for the starter last night but we still had to hit off the horrible Nats bullpen to get the win

    • angry kid

yeah him and nieve are competing for a cy young

  • Charlie

Now this is really sucky. Lannan is only throwin 88-89 & mostly fastballs. I don’t care how good his command is, just hit the ball with some authority.

    • whozat

Let’s say it was Andy Pettitte on the mound….would you be saying the same thing? He only throws 88-89, and mostly fastballs these days.

      • http://bronxbaseballdaily.com Matt ACTY/BBD

        +1

      • Charlie

Yes if i was a fan of the other team.. Andy Petitte has been getting hit hard lately, too.

  • Dorian

    Girardi overthinking again.

    • http://www.theyankeeuniverse.com/ The Artist

..or the fans are over analyzing every move he makes.

Maybe he’d like to have Phil available in a day or two. Though if he used him for 4 innings, I’m sure everyone would be screaming for Hughes again tomorrow.

  • http://www.riveraveblues.com Mike Axisa

Oh good, take Hughes out. He wasn’t pitching well and needs the innings or anything.

    • whozat

Nah. I mean, he threw 70 pitches the other day. 16 was probably as many as he could handle. Besides, Dunn is a lefty! No one that throws with their right hand can get lefties out!

      • http://www.theyankeeuniverse.com/ The Artist

He threw 24, and will be available tomorrow if Joba doesn’t get out of the 4th again.

        • http://www.riveraveblues.com Mike Axisa

I doubt they use him on back to back days.

      • pat

he threw 70 pitches on the 10th

    • Tom Zig

Dude it is the 8th inning.

      • whozat

        kidding? Right?

        • Tom Zig

yes…didn’t feel like using alternating question marks and exclamation points and upper case/lower case letters

  • pat

JESUS CHRIST WTF WHERES PHRANCHISE HE’s DOMINATING

    • Dorian

But he’s not left handed. Face-Palm.

      • whozat

        Yeah. Great call Girardi.

  • vbkj

ARod hasn’t had a multi-hit game since May 25th. He’s had only two multi-hit games for the season. Brutal.

    • Accent Shallow

As I said above, A-Rod’s hip has made me overthink all his slumps. Ugh. Hopefully he just needs a day or two off, and he’ll be ok.

    • http://www.retire21.org Mike R. – Retire 21

Demote him and sign Favre! BOOM!

      • http://bronxbaseballdaily.com Matt ACTY/BBD

        Michael Vick for the 8th.

        • Tom Zig

I wonder if Vick could play some center field?

  • whozat

    Oooooooohhhhh……

  • http://www.retire21.org Mike R. – Retire 21

Damn it! No reason to walk Baby Daddy there!

  • http://bronxbaseballdaily.com Matt ACTY/BBD

So why exactly is Coke in instead of Phranchise? Ugh, I’d so much rather have him in SWB starting.

    • http://www.theyankeeuniverse.com/ The Artist

You’d rather have had Brett Tomko throw the past 2 innings?

      • http://bronxbaseballdaily.com Matt ACTY/BBD

Fair enough but there’s other things to consider. Hughes needs to be stretched out so he can be free of an innings limit next season.

Also, Tomko’s been decent aside from shitting the bed against the Mets.

  • Nickel

Did Flaherty just say, “If the Yankees come back, it’ll be another comeback victory.”??

    • Tom Zig

Does that fall under Department of Redundancy Department?

  • Andy

    Coke walks someone?? No way

    • whozat

      And K’s two…

  • Bob

Well we just have to hope that the yanks get lucky tonight or else we lose against the team with the worst record in the mlb.

    • alan

They do have 19 wins you know.

    • whozat

OH MY GOD!!!!!! Then we might only win the series! If we keep doing that, we might only win 104 games this season!!!

  • Charlie

    coke is pretty nasty

  • http://www.theyankeeuniverse.com/ The Artist

The Girardi whining around here gets every bit as old as the A-Rod whining does. Try watching the post game once or twice, you might find he actually had a good reason here and there.

  • Charlie

I say that we skip Petitte’s next start and let phil start in his place. He’s just too good to be in the bullpen and petitte has looked like he could use a start off.
