As far as learning, I agree with you 100% – the majors is the place for him to learn his craft.

You wonder if Hughes can get to 150 creatively – skipping Joba a few times, maybe skipping Andy or AJ if they need a rest, and maybe going to a 6-man rotation for a week or two. If he can get to 120 innings, you can tentatively pencil him in as the 5th starter in 2010 (assuming Joba gets to his innings target)

If Hughes fills a role in the bullpen (he does, 7th inning) then I don’t put ‘getting him innings’ over helping the Yanks win games.

As far as his development goes, there’s just as many people who will tell you the MLB bullpen is the best place for him to develop.

I don’t think Hughes gets sent down. We’ll see if I’m right or wrong, but that’s my take.

Mitre’s 11 months removed from TJ – so the one question will be his endurance. It sounds like he tired tonight after a strong start.

So he could be an ideal long man once a week if a starter struggles.

I’d rather send Hughes back to Scranton (if Wang shows he’s OK), and have him stretched out and ready to step into the rotation if and when Andy or Joba need to skip a start.

Thinking ahead here – Nady and Mitre both have to be added to the 40-man (Nady’s on the 60-day DL, right?)

Kevin Russo is looking pretty good again at Scranton. Move 1 is DFA-ing Berroa – you’ve got Russo as insurance. Move 2 could be some kind of deal to clear room on the 40.

Sergio Mitre (and to a lesser extent Casey Fossum) are the reason why I don’t take the Yanks too seriously when they talk about not wanting to keep Hughes in the pen, since he wouldn’t be able to start at some point.

They have other options, and if there’s a long term injury you could send him down to stretch him out and pitch Mitre 1-2 times in the interim.
