Don't think so...not necessarily. Batters don't get stronger just because the fences are further back. I don't know, 'cause I'm not a baseball player, but I think you'd base your fielding position relative to the batter, not relative to the fence.

The piece you're missing is that if the outfield is deeper, fielders may have to play back further to prevent doubles/triples over their head, so there is more space in front of the fielder for singles to fall (even though there is equivalent space in a smaller park in front of the fielder, he will play in closer, and have less total territory to cover).

Think of it in terms of the ratio of total outfield area to outfielder. rather than just the difference in linear distance.

I'm not so sure...more foul territory is definitely bad for batting averages. As for more "room" for hits to fall, again I'm not sure. The dimensions of fair territory in every ballpark are the same up to a point...the differences are obviously only in the deepest parts of the OF. In a large park, the only room for hits to fall that doesn't exist in other stadiums is deep areas.

So, compared to a stadium with short fences, some long fly balls will stay in the stadium at citi field. Some of these will be caught, some won't, but in a shorter stadium, ALL are hits because they clear the fence. So I don't see how a large stadium has more room for hits to fall. Any hits that fall in at Citi would be homers in smaller parks. And some of them, the fly balls, will be caught. In all, fewer hits.

Maybe more doubles and triples will be hit at Citi, and less homers, but overall, should be fewer hits.

Obviously there are other things that effect the number of hits...hitting background, etc... but in terms of dimensions, I think big = bad for hitters.

If I've got it wrong...if I'm not thinking right, please correct me...anyone...

So, Swisher just credited Brian Cashman's visit down in Atlanta as the reason that the Yanks have "turned it around."

Blah-bitty-blah-blah-blah.

Hell, even he players buy into this stuff?!
