Kennedy starts throwing program

By Mike Axisa

Via Chad Jennings, righty Ian Kennedy started a throwing program yesterday as part of his rehab from having an aneurysm removed from underneath his armpit. He made 25 throws from 40 feet and will throw every other day, gradually increasing the distance. The good news is that Kennedy said his arm feels terrific, but the bad news for him is that this is just the first of many steps. Once he works his way up to 60 feet, he’ll begin a more extensive program. There’s still no timetable for a return to the mound, but the process has begun.

I wish nothing but the best for IPK. I’m sure he will once again bcome a nice option for the Yankees.

Agreed. He will be a nice option…

… FOR ME TO POOP ON!!!

(I keed, I keed).

As long as he too goes to the bullpen upon his return, I’ll be happy.

UWS says:

In all seriousness, I wonder if IPK could be a pen guy: he’d throw a bit harder and his fastball-curve-change might work well, no? Provided he stops his goddamn nibbling, of course.

Bo says:

At this point we’ll be developing 9 pitchers to go 1 inning a day.

UWS says:

Isn’t that what everyone is clamoring for?

Mike bk says:

we should get an 13 man 9 inning rotation going since at this point every young pitcher we have they want to move to the pen to boost their mph by 2 mph.

DCR says:

Glad to hear Kennedy is doing well. Hopefully he can come back, pitch well, and get the Yankees something in a trade.

radnom says:

The big three are back in action!

Bo says:

Kennedy could have been a pretty good trade chip in July.

A.D. says:

Well he will be next July, in the mean time, allowed Kontos to go to AAA and raise his status.

Chris says:

He probably won’t be a good trading piece next July. Kennedy will fill the role Hughes is filling this year, which is quite important if you want to make the playoffs.

Billy says:

how do you now that? besides his cup of coffe in 07, he’s been terrible in the bigs. before we should expect him to play an important role in the stretch run, we have to at least see some level of decency from him

Those four words will forever live in Yankees lore… and Mike Francesa’s and his B-Jobber followers’ nightmares (re: Girardi used these same exact words on that fateful night in May 2007 during an on-field, post-game interview with Kim Jones when asked why Joba Chamberlain pitched multiple innings in a low-leverage situation when saying Chamberlain was being stretched out to be a starter)

Zach says:

Wish him the best, hope he can get some innings at Arizona Fall League or Winter league.

whozat says:

It’d have to be winter league, I think you have to still have rookie status (less than 50 IP in MLB for pitchers, I believe) to go to the AZ league or the HI league. He can pitch in Puerto Rico again, though, if he’s progressed that far healthwise by then.

Andy in Sunny Daytona says:

The Hawaiian League, I believe, is moving to Florida starting this year.

Remember yall

Aceves < IPK

IPK could be so nasty out of our pen.

He could be even nastier as our sixth starter.

ledavidisrael says:

Well couldn’t he do that out of the bullpen?

I mean Aceves and Hughes is what makes this whole set up work.

Once Job is shut down you swing Hughes out their.
And Aceves/IPK play Hughes/Aceves now with one of them being the 6th starter depending on availability.

I mean this is provided Wang straightens everything out.

Billy says:

idk if this is a joke or what but that would not be a good idea at all.

Why are you so intent on putting starters into the pen? It’s bad baseball strategy.

Why are you so intent on putting starters into the pen? It’s bad baseball strategy.

I have nothing to add, I just wanted to repeat that louder so that everyone heard it.

Billy says:

i hope his struggles and the aneurysm (glad he’s ok) can be somewhat of a character builder for him. he showed no mental toughness in the bigs (although he is young), and some of his comments really confused me.
