Nova dominates in 1-0 Trenton win

By Mike Axisa

OF Adam Bailey, the Yanks’ 38th round pick, has told his coaches at Nebraska that he will be returning to school next year. (h/t Pablo Zevallos)

The Yanks sold Todd Linden to a Japanese team. Great opportunity for Linden, who stands to earn significantly more there than he does here. I wish him well.

Make sure you scroll down for tonight’s game thread.

Triple-A Scranton (5-4 loss to Gwinnett)
Kevin Russo: 2 for 5, 1 K, 1 SB – still hitting .370 … of course all that time spent on the DL helps
Austin Jackson: 3 for 5, 1 R, 1 2B, 1 SB
Cody Ransom: 0 for 3, 1 R, 1 BB, 1 K
Shelley Duncan & Juan Miranda: both 1 for 4, 1 R, 1 HR – Shelley drove in three & K’ed … Miranda’s was a solo shot
John Rodriguez: 1 for 3, 1 HB
Justin Leone: 0 for 2, 2 BB
Eric Duncan & Kevin Cash: both 0 for 4 – E-Dunc K’ed once, Cash twice
George Kontos: 5 IP, 5 H, 4 R, 4 ER, 3 BB, 4 K, 7-4 GB/FB – 51 of 92 pitches were strikes (55.4%) … allowed three homers tonight after allowing just two all season
Anthony Claggett: 2.2 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 2 BB, 1 K, 1 HB, 2-4 GB/FB – 25 of 49 pitches were strikes (51%)

Double-A Trenton (1-0 win over Binghamton)
Reegie Corona: 0 for 4, 1 K
Noah Hall & Kyle Anson: both 1 for 4, 1 K – Hall’s first inning solo jack was the only offense all game

Marcos Vechionacci: 1 for 2, 1 BB - jacks his AVG up to .195
Justin Snyder: 0 for 2, 1 K, 1 HBP
Ivan Nova: 8 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 1 BB, 8 K, 1 HB, 13-3 GB/FB – he’s starting to put it all together, watch out

Austin Krum: 0 for 3, 1 R, 1 BB, 1 HBP

Jeremy Bleich: 7 IP, 4 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 1 BB, 4 K, 11-6 GB/FB – another rock solid start
Humberto Sanchez: 0.2 IP, 2 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 1 BB, 2 K, 1 WP – just his second outing of the season
Tim Norton: 0.1 IP, zeroes, 0-1 GB/FB
Jon Hovis: 1 IP, zeroes, 2-0 GB/FB

Low-A Charleston (5-2 win over Rome)
Jose Pirela: 3 for 5, 3 R, 2 RBI, 1 K, 1 SB – 15 for his last 39 (.385) with 8 walks & 7 K
Dan Brewer: 1 for 2, 1 R, 1 RBI, 2 BB, 1 K, 1 HBP

I heart Nova and Man-Ban. CoJo is scrubbing it up this year, apparently.

I said in the game threads, you will like this, Mike:

Oh and thanks for the h/t btw.

jeff says:

A-Jax stays perfect in the steals category. I like it.

Reggie C. says:

Sano is still very much in play. The fact that he’s going to visit the yanks and workout for us is a good sign that he’s still fielding offers. ESPN deportes reported that the Pirates weren’t likely to offer Sano $3 million. That’s really important! Yanks are still in position to swoop in and nab this SS.

Sano > Renfroe.

Accent Shallow says:

It’s nice to see the Yankees flexing their financial muscles internationally, but these Dominican kids are so many years away . . .

Reggie C. says:

true , and its fine for now since Dj isn’t going anywhere for a while.

However, you hang your hat on the hope that someone with that kind of talent figures it out and turns out into a game-changing player. Sano’s physical tools are unseen in the Dominican.

DreDog says:

The scouts say he may have to shift to a corner spot. He may grow out of the SS position. Not that I care. He is supposed to have a special bat.

Mike bk says:

I know agents are supposed to hype there clients but this quote is ridiculous.

Sano’s agent Rob Plummer: “I would say he has a Hanley Ramirez body and the possible upside of an Albert Pujols-type bat.”

Jacob says:

Nice to see Montero continue to hit even in Trenton.

Accent Shallow says:

Jesus Christ, Nova. Phenomenal. That many groundballs and Ks? Wow.

Good to see Montero begin to hit.

I’m really rooting for Sanchez to succeed, although he’s been either injured or lousy. Ergh.

Mike D. says:

The farm looks good tonight. Better than the Yankees for sure. Montero just continues to hit, Nova has BIG potential so watch out for him. Jose Pirela seems to finally be putting it together. Hes a 4 tool player (no power) and is only 19.

cult of basebaal says:

wait, we get an adam bailey update, but no love for the Gavin Brooks signing???

Mike says:

so far brooks, schaeffer, milo, medchill and watkins all signed. nice to see getting a bunch of signings out of the way early so they can deal with signability and draft and follow cases later on.

Jake H says:

Manny B looking dominating. Was this the first time he threw more then 6 innings in his career?

Accent Shallow says:

Jeez, I think it might be the first time he threw more than 5!

(Just checked his gamelogs, and he’s gone 5.1 once and 5.2 twice)

Jacob says:

What kind of stuff does Nova have?

Dorian says:

Yeah man are we talking about a Zach type guy.

Accent Shallow says:

From what I can find (which is precious little), Nova flashes three plus pitches: fastball, curve, change. He’s inconsistent, can lose velocity as the game goes on, and fights his command/control.

In other words, he’s a young guy learning to harness his stuff.

AndrewYF says:

Man, don’t the Padres wish they had held on to Nova now? Sure, he wouldn’t be able to pitch in the minors but at least he has more upside than some of the guys they’re trotting out there. Plus what do they have to lose?

Accent Shallow says:

http://itmightbedangerous.blog.....draft.html

There’s Paul DePodesta’s (Padres front-office assistant) blog post in re: the rule V draft. He touches on Nova’s stuff in it.

As for Nova’s return, he was awful in ST for the Padres as a short reliever, with an ERA over 9 in ~10 IP. Guess they decided he’s too far away to have him be the last man out of the pen?

thebusiness says:

Melancon needs to replace that scrub Tomko, YESTERDAY.

I know Tomko shat the bed today but he’s actually been fine this season.

yankees=warriors says:

I second that. The one who needs to be gone LONG AGO is Veras.

thebusiness says:

Veras stinks but he isn’t going anywhere since they have to DFA him. They won’t want to lose him until they have plenty of replacements.

emac2 says:

Since when is winning secondary to losing the rights to a marginal reliever?

Chris says:

Greg G. says:

Wow, Bleich…Banuelos…Nova…good night for the starters.

Hey, Mike…is there a site where you can track which draftees have signed? I recall one in years past, but can’t remember where. Any possibility of putting one up here at RAB for the Yanks?

Mike D. says:

nomaas.org/draft/

Not the right Mike but it’s what I use.

Greg G. says:

Thanks, Mike…that’s a great link.

Mike says:

baby bombers has been all over the signings so far as well mainly i think because most of the ones that have signed so far are going to SI.

Raul says:

When am I going to hear the Bleacher Creatures chanting Austin Jackson?

Accent Shallow says:

Mid-2010? Maybe Opening Day if you’re lucky?

Mike bk says:

i think that A-Jax depending on his 2nd half will get a legit shot to win a spot on next years team in spring training.

emac2 says:

He’ll get some time with the big club this year if he keeps hitting well.

yankees=warriors says:

Anyone else a bit sad that Linden is gone?
Thought he could have been a serviceable bat if he were called-up.

Blackdragon905 says:

Scouting Report and Ceiling on Nova?

Accent Shallow says:

He’s no Melvin Crousett, that’s for sure.

Mike bk says:

what are the chances that any of Z-Mac, Nova, Bleich, Man Ban, phelps or noesi move up a level before the year is over?

Z-Mac – Almost certain
Nova – Likely
Bleich – 50/50 (Maybe near the end of the season)
Man Ban – I am not sure, but I see no need to rush him
Phelps – Your guess is as good as mine
Noesi – 60/40 He doesn’t have much of a track record, but he’s not exactly a kid. (22 years old)

Mike bk says:

Man Ban was the only one i didnt really want to move with his age. He and Marshall should spend the whole year at Charleston and move next year to Tampa. Z-Mac is still really young for AA, but i could see him in AAA come late July August.

Nova im not sure because he has been less consistent than Z-Mac and at 22 he could afford to stay in AA til next year.

I think Phelps is ready to go Tampa and Noesi depending on how he shows the next month would probably need to move soon cause of his age.

What’s your dream 2013 rotation?

Chip says:

CC, Joba, Hughes, Brackman, Betences

Chip says:

Scratch Betences and put in Felix Hernandez :)

Drew says:

Joba
Wang
Hughes
CC
???
I guess that’s not much of a dream rotation, but we’d be damn good.

Reggie C. says:

1. CC
2. Felix
3. Joba
4. Hughes
5. Brackman / Betances (whichever hasn’t gotten traded)

daneptizl says:

Hughes, Joba, Brackman, Betances, King Felix.

RollingWave says:

OMG WE GOT Strausbaugh!!!! … oh wait.

DredScott says:

any info on IPK?

i hope he’s recovering nicely…

pat says:

Nova sits 91-94 with the Fb, occasionally hitting 95. Very good control of the heater. Features a plus changeup and plus curveball but struggles mightily with control (the reason he’s had less than stellar results the past few years despite nasty stuff) He’s 6′4′ 201 lbs so he stands to gain some weight and maybe add a tick to the fastball as he matures.

dan says:

Wait, Jackson didn’t have two strikeouts? WTF is this world coming to?
