Open Thread: A lazy Sunday

By Benjamin Kabak

It’s a quiet Sunday around here. The Yanks don’t play until 8 p.m., but there is a full slate of afternoon games. The Braves and the Red Sox square off on TBS, and that game started at 1:30. The FIFA Confederatiosn Cup final featuring an improbable match-up pitting the U.S. against Brazil starts at 2 p.m. on ESPN.

We’ll be back at 4 p.m. with some Yankee news. Anything goes. Just play nice

Oh, and chew on this one: Brett Gardner has five hits against the Mets this weekend. The Mets have four hits against the Yankees.

Billy Mays RIP =(

LET’S GO USA! USA! USA!

Tom Zig says:

yeah wow Billy Mays dying is so unexpected.

I loved his commercials

Jake K. says:

Glad there are some other footie fans here.

Jake K. says:

Hopefully we’ll make a better showing than in the group stage. Not having Bradley hurts, but at least it increases our chances of actually finishing a game with 11 men on the field.

Bill says:

I hope Tommy Hanson holds up in this game. It’s 95 degrees there and the flu must have traveled from the Yankees locker room to the Braves. I think the Braves can score a few more runs off Penny and give us a shot to get within 3 tonight.

K.B.D. says:

The TBS announcers are trying to argue that catchers really don’t need a high average or OBP because “Really, what are they going to do on the bases anyways?”. Score runs, maybe?

Jake K. says:

Yeah, but scoring runs only matters if you want to win the game.

Bill says:

Buck Martinez is an idiot as are most announcers. I remember Harold Reynolds saying something similar recently on the MLB Network. Reynolds even reiterated Dusty Baker’s “clogging up the bases” theory. Braves with 2 men on, 1 out but Jeff Francoeur is up.

K.B.D. says:

I just don’t understand how these people can hold down jobs in the face of their staggering ineptitude.

Mike Pop says:

What is the range for a good ERA+?

K.B.D. says:

Well, I guess anything higher than 100 would be “good” as it would be better than average, but I’d say starting around 115 you’re starting to get a substantially better performance.

Mike Pop says:

Hmm, thank you. I was just thinking about it and was wondering what the range was to be considered a good era+.

Joba is at 115, I wonder if that’s exceeding expectations……

K.B.D. says:

The thing about ERA+ is it’s all relative: he could be sporting a 2.00 ERA and a 80 ERA+. It’s not likely, but it’s possible.

Steve H says:

A 2.00 ERA and an ERA+ of 80 would mean that the pitcher is pitching extremely poorly. That’s what makes ERA+ so great. Bob Gibson’s 1.12 in in 1968 was an ERA+ of 258. Pedro’s 1.74 was a 291. So on ERA alone, Gibson crushes Pedro, but we know that Pedro’s 2000 season was much more impressive than Gibson’s 1968 season because of ERA+.

K.B.D. says:

I think we can all argue that a 2.00 ERA is a good thing, not a bad thing. When you’re talking about the ERA+ of 258 and 291 and which is objective more impressive, I think you’re splitting hairs.

My point is only is that ERA+ doesn’t tell you if they’re pitching poorly or well, it tells you how they’re pitching in relation to others.

Steve H says:

A 2.00 ERA would not be a good thing if the league average was 1.60. It just wouldn’t.

(Comments wont nest below this level)

keith says:

That’s incorrect. An ERA+ of 80 with and ERA of 2 just means that the league average ERA would be 1.6.

Steve H says:

Yes, which would mean the pitcher was a well below average pitcher.

(Comments wont nest below this level)

Jake K. says:

For reference, AJ Burnett: career 111 ERA+. Pettitte: 116. Pedro: 154!

Steve H says:

Nolan Ryan 111. And his career ERA+ with the Rangers was 116, higher than any other team he was on. In his 40’s. But again, Clemens had to be juicing to do what he did late in his career? But then again, since Nolan is already in the HOF, there’s no way he was a juicer, right?

Mike Pop says:

Wow, got Frenchy on the helmet there.

Francouer just got hit in the head with a pitch.

Soriano~40~40 says:

Looks like we’re gonna see Jose Veras pitch for Cleveland sooner than we thought. They already brought him up to the major league ballclub..

I except the same old herky jerky w/ zero command, but watch him become the next dominant reliver haha not.

Mike Pop says:

I expect him to turn into a 2008 version of Grant Balfour.

Haha.

Drew says:

lol, well good thing he went to cleveland!

Drew says:

Are ya ready for some football!!!

Drew says:

good to hear our anthem on the World stage.

Jake K. says:

Ugh, that field is not in great shape.

thurdonpaul says:

i was at last nights game at citi, i had a met fan next to me, he was very sad at the end of the game :)

Bill says:

lol Big Papi playing defense.

MAn, South Africa looks COLD this time of year.

Drew says:

Lol I know, wth is up with that!

Winter in the southern hemisphere!

CharlieD says:

Isnt it interesting how Gardner at .291 is on a tear and Melky at .292 is on a swoon…

Drew says:

Melkman had two ridiculous months and 3 bad weeks.

Jake K. says:

I’d guess it’s because Gardner is hitting .348 in June, compared to Melky’s .233 for the month.

Drew says:

I’d like to see a soccer match in YSIII

Salty Buggah says:

Can you believe Ramiro Pena didn’t get a web gem?!!!

Here are the Web Gems: http://espn.go.com/video/clip?id=4292529

I don’t really think Matt Kemp’s was that good…

Once again, a Yankee gets snubbed but Ellsbury gets one all the time for normal catches.

K.B.D. says:

Eh, most of the WebGems are people in the outfield taking terrible routes to balls, forcing them to lay out to make a play, or a infielder with sub-par range making a diving stop that a Marco Scutaro plays standing up. I stopped caring about ESPN’s coverage of baseball awhile ago: they employ John Kruk.

Jake H says:

Franky from the M’s shouldn’t have been there. The only reason that he had to dive for that ball was because he froze, went a half step back and then came in. He comes in he catches that easy.

Drew says:

The pitch is getting tore the fuck up already.

Drew says:

NONONONONOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
GOAAAAAAALLLLLLL

Drew says:

What a save by Howard.

daneptizl says:

Dempsey caught em sleeping.

Jake K. says:

Looked like Dempsey whiffed and it hit him on the knee. But who the hell cares!

Drew says:

Nah I think he just touched it on with his foot.

pat says:

heh, another garbage goal for dempsey, but I’ll take it.

K.B.D. says:

daneptizl says:

DreDog says:

I guess the Tommy Hanson vs. Hughes debate is over?
Tommy >>>>>>>> Hughes?

Whozat says:

That discussion won’t be over for years.

pat says:

Altidore es muy macho.

daneptizl says:

What in the world was Bocanegra doing.. trying to more than just steal candy…

Drew says:

I don’t ind the attacking but we have to be careful. We can’t be getting caught with our junk in our hands.

Jake K. says:

Drew says:

Not liking these matchups with Spector..

Jake K. says:

Howard is saving our bacon.

Drew says:

GTFOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
GOOALLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLL

pat says:

GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLL

daneptizl says:

That’s that red, white, and blue shit.

Salty Buggah says:

Let’s win this US!!!

daneptizl says:

Jake K. says:

This is the most dangerous I’ve seen the US look. We have more goals in us today.

pat says:

Terrible set play

Jake K. says:

Seriously. Not what you’d expect from Brazil.

Jake K. says:

I’m amazed we’re causing Brazil so many problems with such young, inexperienced forwards.

daneptizl says:

Altidore needs to start coming alive.

Jake K. says:

I’m not calling him lazy, but it seems like he doesn’t come up with some balls he should.

Drew says:

Come on guys it’s time to hunker down!!

Jake K. says:

So who would be the baseball commentator equivalent of JP Dellacamera? Superficial knowledge of the game, unlikely to say anything controversial or remotely insightful/interesting.

daneptizl says:

Thank goodness Joe Buck got embarrassed on his show.

Jake K. says:

Boom, you nailed it. JP is Joe Buck. I tip my cap to you sir.

K.B.D. says:

I don’t like drama. Let’s come out in the 2nd half, score 5 and call it a day.

Billy says:

dan brewer is really tearin it up so far in tampa. he’s 5 for 6 so far in the double header

Brandon says:

Was he just recently called up?

Billy says:

yep. i think he can be a real good 4th ofer down the line

pat says:

Im fuckin dreading having to watch the yankee game in ESPN.

Billy says:

kay isnt much better than the espn guys

Zach says:

im thinking of watching the game on mute with WFAN in the background

Billy says:

howie rose is really good

Zach says:

Yeah, just hope its not a delay between the two

Billy says:

there probably will be

Billy says:

the good announcers/commentators are wasted on the mets

Two options:

1) Mute.
2) SAP button.

Billy says:

i can never find the SAP button

pat says:

Yeah but at least kay will talk about new york stuff and would have cone or leiter to bullshit with. The guys on ESPN are insufferable. All they talk about is bandbox, payroll and bosox.

Billy says:

kay kisses so much ass and he has his girly laugh and he’s always on oneil’s dick

Zach says:

dont forget joba to the pen and trading beltran

Zach says:

and the Red Sox depth/organizational amazingness that has Brad Penny as the 3rd best starter on the roster

Billy says:

and how great a signing john smoltz is, better than cc and aj and tex combined. the sox are so frugal and financially responsible. so gritty … jason varitek.

Billy says:

and how we never produce young players even though they take about putting one of our young players to the bullpen and how dominant he is there

Jake K. says:

pat says:

Jake K. says:

Coulda done without that.

Billy says:

i always hated michael jackson but now i feel bad for him. he died real young and had a really awful life

Soriano~40~40 says:

One can argue. he sabotaged himself , but thats another story

Jake K. says:

The rough thing about a game like this is that we know Brazil can bring on Pato, Danny Alves, etc. We can bring on…Conor Casey.

Drew says:

is beasley on the trip?

Jake K. says:

Yeah, but he’s been on the bench after being thoroughly abused in the US’s first two games (not coincidentally our two losses).

Jake K. says:

Yeah, that was a goal.

Drew says:

lol, it really wasn’t even close with that replay.. Luck is on our side maybe.

me says:

goal….sure….. fuck you assistant

me says:

the goal is time question

Drew says:

the bird is word speculation

Drew says:

Am I the only one that wants us to trade for Milledge?

pat says:

Yes. Dude couldn’t hack it in DC. No fanks. Unless its for like george kontos or something.

Drew says:

Leave him in the minors for the rest of the year. He’s still got serious potential.
He’s been mishandled thus far throughout his career IMO.
Also, they want to get rid of him.

Zach says:

how has he been mishandled?

Drew says:

The Mets kind of rushed him up.
http://www.baseball-reference......lled001las
I think so anyway.

Zach says:

his bat’s not the problem. i think he had a good season for his first full year in the bigs, he just sucks in center and right

Drew says:

True, I think it would be a cool little experiment. I mean who’s in his way down in Scranton… Shelley, J-rod, a little E-Dunc. This guy has more potential than all of em.

(Comments wont nest below this level)

pat says:

dude does have tantalizing upside but the mental makeup issues will probably keep him from reaching them.

ArodMVP217 FTW! says:

yea, you should want this guy

http://blog.blueclaws.com/wp-c.....-brown.jpg

+package for Wang

Zach says:

well he’s injured right now
his second club(worst in baseball) is about to give up on him
he’s horrible in CF

Drew says:

Maybe because he’s not a CFer…

Zach says:

ok i thought you wanted him to solve CF or something. he should be in LF, but the sample size is too small to say he’ll be atleast average there.
i just dont see the yankees going after him

Drew says:

Yeah true. Nah I’m not even expecting him to see the bigs this year. He’s still only 24. For a cheap price, I’d take a shot at him.

Drew says:

this is getting dicey

I think I’m sweating worse than some of the players right now

me says:

Drew says:

Kaka>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>Spector

Jake K. says:

Son of a bitch!

I wish we had someone other than Sacha to bring on. Altidore wasn’t doing anything, but we need someone else who can score goals now.

I just got destroyed behind home plate. Foul balls off my jaw (again), chest, and arm. I’m not a big fan of 10 year olds right now.

Drew says:

If you would call a decent strike zone the kids wouldn’t be fouling em off.

King of Fruitless Hypotheticals says:

I don’t think we win PK’s..

better get started…

me says:

fuck you USA
Brazil 3 a 2

Jake K. says:

Go troll somewhere else.

pat says:

hahaha mama los huevos

Jake K. says:

The US won the first half. Brazil has WON!!! the second half.

Drew says:

We have been completely flat footed this whole fucking half.

pat says:

exactly, we blew our load the first half.

Drew says:

should have about 4 minutes of stoppage time

pat says:

well that was fun, back to being an afterthought. GO YANKS

Yanke1313 says:

Andrew Miller is starting to blossom.

TheLastClown says:

Mike Gonzalez…the shining example that Parkinson’s Disease can be a MLB asset.

UWS says:

The Braves are trying to give this game away, aren’t they?

e mills says:

Kelly Bleeping Johnson

Drew says:

Thank you atlanta.
Wang, it’s your time to shine!

mick says:

It looks like Penny is going to need some comfort food…Gammons should purchase a 25inch pizza for the “best” number 3 pitcher in the universe!

Drew says:

Wow, on MLB network, 2001 HR Derby.
Troy Glaus, Sammy Sosa, Barry Bonds, Giambino, Alex, Luis Gonzalez.
What do all of these players have in common? Aysh…

DreDog says:

I was just following Jose Canseco’s career and the teams he was on and what year. It’s kind of scary to see how many player had much better years after having him on his team.

Also, Barry Bonds had a sick career even before the game of shadows.

Soriano~40~40 says:

5 tool players are where it’s at

K.B.D. says:

PeteAbe says he heard JB Cox quit baseball to which I say, WTF?

mick says:

He quit a long time ago…just still wearing the uniform.

Jake K. says:

Yeah, if true it’s a huge bummer. I thought he would be in the Bronx by now.

mick says:

RAB has the hottest advertizers in the universe..EVONY,this Angelica girl etc..

Drew says:
mick says:

Billy says:

i need something to do to kill 2 hours
