Quick note: Auto-play ads

By Joseph Pawlikowski

We’ve gotten a few complaints recently about ads that automatically play. For this I apologize. I freaking hate it myself, and if I got any of said ads when visiting the site I’d have already gotten rid of them. So please, do me a favor and let me know if you get any of these. Make sure to mention which ad slot it is, too. This will help me eradicate these annoying ads for good. Just email it to me, address is to the right. Include a screenshot if possible.

Alas (?), I don’t see any ads (Firefox w/ Ad-Block Plus).

Ads are how we keep this site running. I’m not saying turn ad blocker off, I’m just saying that ad blockers hurt publishers.

Yages says:

You could always write commercially-sponsored posts. Ad blockers would be rendered irrelevant. Just an idea.

Appreciate the suggestion, but I’d like to retain a shred of dignity.

Yages says:

I’m a publisher with a journalism degree, so I hear you. Having said that, I don’t think having “Today’s posts sponsored by _____” would detract from your integrity. But hey, whatever works for you guys.

I just misinterpreted what you meant by corporate-sponsored. Yeah, I suppose we could do that. It seems everyone wants a spot in the header image, though. I don’t think I’m ready to sell that out.

Everytime I see the Afrin PureSea add, I can’t smell. Does that help?

Unless Taste My Desire starts to move, sounds good to me. He is pure gold.

You get any extra if the ads are clicked through?

Yes, sir. We are not allowed though to encourage people to click if you get my drift.

Thanks guys, I have no problem with static/passive ads. Pop-ups and audio auto-plays drive me batty. I rarely visit ESPN.com anymore because of the constant pop-ups, survey requests, and frame changing ads.

I’m ambivalent toward the auto-play ads, just don’t get rid of Angelica Chavez any time soon, she is hot. (And undefeated.)

Under the top article (Veras), a wassup baby video is playing. DOn’t mind ads, but hate videos. Slows down the browser.
