SWB falls in bullpen game

By Mike Axisa

Hector Noesi, Pat Venditte, Melky Mesa & Dan Brewer all made the South Atlantic League All-Star Team. Coaches Torre Tyson and Jeff Ware will also be making the trip.

Austin Romine was named Florida State League Offensive Player of the Week, while the immortal Melvin Croussett was selected as the Dominican Summer League Pitcher of the Week thanks to his three rescues. (h/t Andy in Sunny Daytona for the Croussett bit)

Triple-A Scranton (7-3 loss to Charlotte)
Kevin Russo & Juan Miranda: both 0 for 3 – 1 BB – Russo committed a throwing error … Miranda drove in a run & K’ed twice
Austin Jackson, Shelley Duncan & Todd Linden: all 1 for 4 – Ajax scored a run & K’ed … Shelley drove in a run & K’ed twice … Linden K’ed
Cody Ransom: 3 for 3, 1 R, 2 2B
John Rodriguez & Justin Leone: both 0 for 4, 1 K
Kevin Cash: 1 for 3, 1 R, 1 HR, 1 RBI, 2 K
Paul Bush: 1.1 IP, 4 H, 5 R, 5 ER, 2 BB, 2 K, 1 WP, 1-1 GB/FB – 25 of 45 pitches were strikes (55.6%)

Jon Albaladejo: 2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 0 BB, 1 K, 2-3 GB/FB – 18 of 32 pitches were strikes (56.3%)
Zack Kroenke: 1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 0 BB, 0 K, 3-0 GB/FB – 8 of 13 pitches were strikes (61.5%) … the 1.08 ERA is flashy, the 17-15 K/BB ratio not so much

Double-A Trenton had a scheduled off day, as did the rest of the Eastern League.

High-A Tampa (4-1 loss to Sarasota)
Austin Krum, Eric Fryer & Brandon Laird: all 1 for 4 - Krum drew a walk, scored a run & K’ed … Fryer doubled, drew a walk, K’ed twice & allowed a passed ball … Laird committed a fielding error

Dan Brewer, Corban Joseph, Taylor Grote & Mitch Abeita: all 1 for 4 – Brewer scored a run & drove one in … Joseph drove in two & K’ed … Grote K’ed thrice … Abeita doubled & crossed the plate
David Adams: 2 for 5, 1 R, 2 2B, 1 E (fielding)
Ray Kruml: 2 for 3, 1 RBI, 1 BB
Mike Lyon: 2 for 4, 1 R, 1 RBI
Brett Marshall: 3.1 IP, 6 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 3 BB, 2 K, 1 HB, 4-4 GB/FB – he’s at 62 IP now, I wonder when they shut him down
Dan Kapala: 2.1 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 0 BB, 1 K, 6-0 GB/FB
Brad Rulon: 1.2 IP, 1 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 1 BB, 2 K, 1-2 GB/FB
Pat Venditte: 1.2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 0 BB, 0 K, 3-2 GB/FB – two straing outings with no K’ed? WTF?

Drew says:

When I saw Pat Venditte’s name up at the top of the thread I thought he got the call to Tampa. Damn you Ak-see-sah!

J.R. says:

He should get the call soon, right?

V says:

How many innings did Marshall throw last year?

Do they typically have these guys throw to their innings limit then shut down for the year, or throw for a couple months, shut down, throw for a couple months?

Bill says:

It depends. If all goes well they usually let the guy pitch until they feel its time to shut him down. However often times there will be setbacks within the season that allow for the limiting of innings in the middle of the season such as minor injuries or mechanical issues.

Accent Shallow says:

I think my favorite thing about Spanish language baseball articles is the references to “gardeners.”

Sort of an uninspiring day in the minors, huh? Not much happened.

billbybob says:

Mike,

Any thoughts on Jose Pirela? He was getting a lot of hype last year…

He’s legit. Not much power but he gets the bat on the ball, can run and can defend.

Dave M says:

I assume Venditte will get promoted after the ASB.

Doug says:

Any word on Montero’s injury?

No, if I had anything I would have passed it on.

Doug says:

Is no news good news? Not sure how injury news usually filters out

Not really, there’s almost always no news. They haven’t stuck him on the DL yet, so that’s a good sign.

Well, if they do, he’ll only be on it for three days, right?

Whozat says:

If mike had news…don’t you think he’d have mentioned it?

Doug says:

thought i may have missed it, thanks

Andy In Sunny Daytona says:

Melvin picked up his 4th save today. .2 IP, 2 K zeroes. 8 staight strikeouts for Asesino de los SueƱos.

I though he was El Asesino De Las Almas?

Assassin of Souls. I love it.

The Holy Ghost does not assassinate souls, he redeems them through his perfect gracious love and ethereal beauty.

Andy In Sunny Daytona says:

He could be both. They both sound bad ass.

yanke1313 says:

what website do you use?

Drew says:

I think Cody Ransom will be a solid contributor off the bench when he comes back. Looking great so far in AAA. He should be activated in like 2 weeks I think.
Will Ramiro get the boot down to the minors?

chriskeo says:

Well Ransom is on the DL60 so I would assume and hope the long awaited DFA of Angel Berroa would come at that time.

Charlie says:

if the yankees weren’t so effin good i’d be pretty annoyed that angel is still on the team. he hasn’t hurt us that much but he truly is an utter waste of a valuable roster spot.

Maybe we’re keeping him around to annoy and motivate Hideki Matsui.

He probably showers with his 2003 AL RoY trophy around his neck on a chain.

Greg G. says:

Oh, I’m sorry, Hideki, I couldn’t hear you, I was just polishing my Rookie of the Year trophy. I’m just like Dustin Pedroia, we both sadly polish our old trophies in pathetic wistfulness of past glory, and neither of us can hit the high inside fastball.

Manimal says:

Berroa can’t hit a fastball at all.

King of Fruitless Hypotheticals says:

Germane.

Fantastic word that has the serendipitous benefit of scaring the pants off ESL Frenchmen…

J.R. says:

Love it.

Accent Shallow says:

What do you guys think of Marshall’s full season debut?

58.1 IP, 53 H, 33R, 26ER, 2 HR, 27 BB, 39 K

Rates: 0.3 HR/9 (nice!), 4.2 BB/9, 6.0 K/9, 1.20 WHIP

http://www.thebaseballcube.com.....ll-1.shtml

Took his stats from there, and added in today’s game.

Needs to work on throwing more strikes, no biggie. He’s been fine.

Accent Shallow says:

Word.

It’d be nice to see some more strikeouts, but he’s 18, can live with that.

whozat says:

Fewer walks would make me happier than more strikeouts.

pat says:

Motherfrickin christmas/hanukah/kwanzaa tomorrow. I’m SO excited. I had a weird ass dream last night that purke went 2nd overall then shelby miller went third. I’m dreaming about the mlb draft, I think I have a problem.

Drew says:

Which do you look forward to more?
IFA or Draft?

pat says:

Draft, IFA guys are soooooo far away.

You forgot about Festivus.

whozat says:

Happy Christmachanukwanzikka to you…

A.D. says:

Who’d the Yanks take?

pat says:

I dunnio the gist of the dream was my asshole friend couldnt figure out how to read espn.com and I couldn’t find out.

Seek professional help.

pat says:

Yo tommie they just mentioned your boy from East County, matt something.. what was his name?

DON’T YOU KNOW WHO I AM?!?!??! I’M MATT F$%#ING BUSH!!!!!!!

Coaches Torre Tyson and Jeff Ware will also be making the trip.

Mike Tyson and Andre Ware’s brothers?

MattG says:

This is awesome. “Towed,” “rescues” and “tugs” have to be part of my baseball vernacular from now on.

I really love “tugs.” That is so funny.

Charlie says:

whadda ya think, chris garcia the next chris carpenter (rarely healthy but dominant when he is) or is that too optimistic??

Chip says:

That’s incredibly optimistic but possible. I’d like him to be more like Halladay, shitty beginning to his pro career but puts it together and dominates

V says:

Carpenter is REALLY fooking good. His 2005-2006 seasons were something else. He had a 7 game stretch in the summer of 2005 that was 8-9 innings of 0-1 runs a game. Daaamn.

Andy In Sunny Daytona says:

I love the Charleston’s radio guy. He signature line when they win…”and they’ll be doing the Charleston ALL…NIGHT…LONG.”

That was probably clever and funny… the first couple of times.

Andy In Sunny Daytona says:

He’s a Low-A Ball radio broadcaster…..that’s as good as it gets.

Accent Shallow says:

Jake H says:

I’m thinking that Marshall probably gets put on a innings limit here. Get him up to 70 to 80 innings. But it could get up to 100. Yanks seem more careful with their pitchers then other teams.

Here’s some big name pitchers out of HS and the innings they threw the first year.

Jarrod Parker (Arz) 24 gs 118 innings
Chris Tillman (Bal) 28 gs 136 innings
Michael Bowman (Sox) 25 gs 113 innings
Laptop Stealer (Sox) 24 gs 119 innings
Hughes 12 gs 69 innings
Tyler Clippard 25 gs (26 games) 149 inngs ( He did throw 44 innings the year he signed)
Chris Volstad 26 gs 152 innings
Porcello 24 gs 125 innings

Those are just some prospects I saw skipping through BA handbook. Most of those guys who threw a lot of innings are bigger guys then Marshall. Parker might be the best comp since he is listed at 6′0″ and 180 lbs compared to Marshall’s 6′0″ 195 lbs according to BA.

DreDog says:

Is there a concern about his size? I remember Pedro was demonized for being small.

Chip says:

Speaking of prospects, McCutchen is FAST!!! That guy looks like an olympic sprinter between first and third. Those Pirates could be damn good if all of their guys put it together at the same time. Outfield of McCutchen, Tabata and Gorkys could be amazing

J.R. says:

Yeah, he looked Bolt fast. It would be sweet to see how quickly bolt could leg out a triple.

RollingWave says:

i would pay money to watch Bolt trying to hit a curveball though.

Bo says:

And an OF of Bay, McClouth and Nady was terrible??

Andy says:

Really? Zero power, zero power, zero power. Speed is nice, but they basically have three CF/leadoff types, with the possible slight exception of Tabata. Even if they all reach their ceiling, they would be the worst power hitting OF in the majors….

V says:

Talking about Marshall, that’s the thing I forget about when I see a Purke – these high school guys, outside of the Hughes/Porcello/Kershaw tier, are YEARS away, just due to innings requirements, regardless of development.

NC Saint says:

If I set myself on fire on 138th in protest, do you think Cashman will consider promoting Venditte?

I dunno, give it a shot. Sounds like its something worth trying.

BTW-You do realize 138th runs about 2 miles south of 161st and River, right?

A.D. says:

You’re better off with the Deegan

JohnC says:

Festivus is very big on the Yankee forums, celebrated almost daily. At least the first part, “Airing of the grievances” is.
