Yanks’ protest denied; Teixeira leads in All Star voting

By Benjamin Kabak

Just a few quick notes before the game thread: MLB has denied the Yanks’ protest of Sunday’s game. Joe Girardi filed a formal complaint with the league on Sunday after the Marlins messed up a double switch. The denial is unsurprising; I can’t pinpoint the exact date, but it’s been around two decades since the Commissioner upheld a protest.

In other news, Mark Teixeira leads AL first basemen in the All Star voting. After finding himsef 1300 votes behind Kevin Youkilis last week, the Yanks’ slugger now has a 35,632-vote cushion. While Joe Mauer has himself a comfortable lead, Jason Varitek is second, and 1,108,054 fans think Varitek is an All Star. Remember: This time it counts!

Last one I can think of was New York Yankees on July 24, 1983.

Sweet

Link says:

I was just about to say that…lol the Pine Tar game…classic.

yankeegirl49 says:

I still have my stub from that game!

AsianShuutoHeat says:

That IS AWESOME, no sarcasm intended but having a stub from that game is just wow. If I had that stub, I would frame it up or something.

yankeegirl49 says:

I had it signed by Nettles..one day Ill get Brett to sign it as well. In the meantime its in an album with other signed pics and stubs.

Good to know Tex is back in first over Puke-i-lis.

This Time It Counts!!! Lmao.

Phil McCracken says:

Only in Boston does a .228 batting average equal All Star.

J.R. says:

Yeah, but he’s gritting 1.000

Andy In Sunny Daytona says:

1.001. Get it right.

Zach says:

Meanwhile:
Kinsler & Pedroia both lead Cano
HanRam barely leading Rollins
And dont get me started on the AL OF

Kinsler has Cano beat in HR, RBI, OBP, SLG, OPS, OPS+, and UZR/150.

JP says:

Kinsler is the best player of the 3…best hitter, anyway.

Ian Kinsler, 2009:
Home – 166 PA, .340/.422/.667 (1.088), 34 R, 30 RBI, 21 BB, 15 K, 48 H
Away – 146 PA, .189/.262/.394 (.656), 14 R, 18 RBI, 12 BB, 26 K 25 H

Kinsler The Ballpark at Arlington has Cano beat in HR, RBI, OBP, SLG, OPS, OPS+, and UZR/150.

Fixed.

JP says:

Come on…….could it be a sampling issue, this early in the year? Who have been his opponents on the road? Didja check that out yet? What parks? How about his career splits?

Chip says:

He’s played Giants, Red Sox, Yankees, Astros, Tigers, White Sox, A’s, Mariners, Orioles, and Blue Jays on the road.

Career
Home – .325/.395/.549
Away – .249/.320/.417

You look really dumb when you don’t bother to look the stats up

How about his career splits?

Ian Kinsler, Career:
Home – .325/.395/.549 (.944)
Away – .249/.320/.417 (.737)

Ian Kinsler = Smoke and Park Effects Mirrors

Chip says:

Even though that makes perfect sense, everybody will point to the YSIII launching pad and say it’s even because everybody is too lazy to look up the fact Cano is actually better on the road this season

Touche.

I still don’t think it’s necessarily some great crime for Kinsler to beat Cano in ASG voting, but point well taken.

(Very minor nitpick – Kinsler’s UZR/150 probably doesn’t have much to do with the fact that Kisnler hits much better at home.)

Chip says:

Kinsler has 5 errors this year to Cano’s 3 and is therefore not the defender Cano is

/ESPN’d

NYQ says:

Cano should definitely be an All-Star. He as a better batting average and he has been more consistent.

Chip says:

And he can hit the inside fastball

AsianShuutoHeat says:

fastball up and in!

Chip says:

I have a better one for you, Nelson Cruz and his 127 OPS+ are being beaten by Hamilton (93 and hurt), Ellsbury (88), and Griffey (95)

Tank the Frank says:

Varitek, excuse me, Tek, is the worst for me. His showing in the All-Star game last year and the voting this year shows just how far this country and the media have their heads up the Nation’s ass.

Torii Hunter is putting up a .316/.396/.602 (155+).

Torii Hunter >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> All other AL outfielders

Chip says:

True, I’d have a starting outfield of Bay/Hunter/Ichiro with Nelson/Damon/Jones on the bench

Tank the Frank says:

No way. Cano is a good player and can potentially be great for stretches but I’d put Pedrioa and Kinsler before him. I thought this would be his year, he’s playing better D, but the supposed “plate discipline” improvement has all but disappeared.

Chip says:

I’d take 2009 Cano over 2009 Pedroia.

Fun facts, Pedroia has never hit a 400ft homerun and has a .346 BABIP at home vs .290 on the road. Why isn’t the media talking about the bandbox that exists on Boston. O wait…….

You can discuss Cano/Kinsler, but I don’t think Pedroia should really be in the conversation this year.

Chip says:

Will (the other one) says:

“This time it counts!” – worst slogan currently being used in pro American team sports?

Meet the Mets, meet the Mets, step right up and greet the Mets

Whitey14 says:

Come on guys, it’s not that all those people are dumb enough to THINK he’s an All Star, it’s that they use a broken system to their advantage because they WANT him to be an All Star.

I’m a Red Sox fan and I voted for Mauer, who certainly deserves the honor.

Yuri says:

/Good point by a sox fan’d

Mason says:

The All-Star Voting is a joke. There will probably end up being half of Boston’s starting lineup on the All Star team, regardless of if they deserve to be or not.. The same could happen in the NL with the cubs… Soriano shouldnt even be thinking about even going as a backup to the ASG but of course he still has a shot at starting. Just another example, Fukudome was a starter by a long shot last year. Yeah he started off great but by the break he wasnt even close to being worthy-compared to some of the guys that didnt make it. I say Managers should just vote for players… or at least something different than all of the Red Sox and Cubs fans that dont know anything voting 25 times for the starting lineup of their respective teams..
