Salty Buggah says:

OK, offense tie it up now at least.

Dela G says:

i’m predicting the offense really wakes up in these next 2 innings

Mike Pop says:

Wow, way to go out on a limb there.

Dela G says:

i also did predict that cc would cruise after the 3rd inning :)

lets hope that holds

Salty Buggah says:

I hope you are right

Rich D. says:

I love CC but AJ has been the better pitcher this season. I even consider starting him Game 1 of the playoffs. Yes, I know, its WAY too early to talk about a playoff rotation.

AJ has certainly pitched better of late but there is a lot of season left to go.

Tony says:

You do, but apparently you don’t. Interesting.

Rich D. says:

What? I do but I dont?

“I even consider starting him Game 1 of the playoffs. Yes, I know, its WAY too early to talk about a playoff rotation.”

Salty Buggah says:

or that he loves CC

Sabathia’s been better and it’s not particularly close.

Sabathia
6.78 IP/start
3.62 FIP
1.16 WHIP

Burnett
6.37 IP/start
4.48 FIP
1.35 WHIP

Burnett’s been better of late, for sure. But CC’s been better considering the entire body of work.

Rich D. says:

Fielding independent pitching.

Accent Shallow says:

An ERA estimator based on strikeout rate, walk rate, and home run rate. It’s been shown to be a better predictor of a pitcher’s ability going forward than ERA.

Fielding Independent Pitching. It’s based on homers, walks and strikeouts. Takes defense right out of the equation.

Mikebk says:

amazing how when burnett is hot everyone forgets that bad stretch he had. cc has been much more consistent.

Rich D. says:

I agree BUT if AJ is on… I think he is the more dominant pitcher. He has total filth.

Mike Pop says:

Eh, ya. But he’s on some of the time, CC is much more consistent. As uuuge of a Allan James fan as I am, I’d take 2 CC’s over a CC and Burnett everyday.

Lanny says:

CC’s case would be much better if he actually beat a good team. Can’t beat Angels, Rays, Sox.

Reggie C. says:

Brandon Morrow is a good fit for the Yanks.

- bullpen ace potential and relief for Hughes’s transition to starter
- potential 2010 starter material that’s > McAllister, Nova, …(fodder)..

Mike Pop says:

Ya, he won’t come cheap.

Reggie C. says:

Upside is really there i think. If it worked out and Morrow found stability here, we could really have another terrific power pitcher in the rotation.

Morrow’s worth a McAllister, Melancon, and Romine.

Mikebk says:

wow, you just gave up 3 of the top 8-10 prospects in the system for him. thats way too much

Lanny says:

That’s why fans aren’t GM’s

Mike Pop says:

I don’t know. I’d rather not give up Romine but Morrow is an interesting arm. So young too, but can he stay healthy enough to be a starter?

Mikebk says:

why do we need to find out cause if Morrow is young at 25, how young is Z-Mac at 21. lol.

I mean we could probably get cliff lee with Z-Mac, Romine and A-Jax or less, so this is offering a whole lot imo.

I think that’s a bit much for Morrow.

Reggie C. says:

Yeah. probably. but he’s a premium arm and the Mariners are gonna field other offers.

I can say that I wouldnt go beyond that offer , but I think Morrow represents the type of trade that could help set this rotation or Bullpen right for years to come.

Accent Shallow says:

And why would the Mariners let him go, unless they know something we don’t?

He’s got a great arm, even if he struggles with command.

Reggie C. says:

Why would they trade Adam Jones and Chris Tillman??

Mariners front office is kinda stupid that way. Cash must be a player for Morrow … the man has got too great an arm to ignore fo’ teh 8th!!!ll1

seriously. Morrow is a big upgrade for the ‘pen.

(Comments wont nest below this level)
Mikebk says:

That was a DIFFERENT gm. bavasi is gone. they traded them hoping to make a run if bedard was the number 1 he was hyped to be.

Mikebk says:

and for that we just gave up a reliever a probably number 3 starter who is dominating AAA at 21 and the more likely of our two stud catching prospects to remain at catcher

Reggie C. says:

The only one that bothers me is giving up Romine … but he’s at least 2 years away. Like i said, i wouldnt go beyond that offer and I could ponder it some more , but I would trade McAllister and Melancon immediately for Morrow.

(Comments wont nest below this level)
Mikebk says:

in case you have missed the last couple years cashman is done with the trade the future to win now mode, so i dont see it happening just because romine is 2 years away.

Reggie C. says:

Morrow is 25 and has a higher ceiling than any player in the trade. I’m pretty sure he qualifies as a future asset for any team.

And don’t talk down to me.

Mikebk says:

oh u dont like it how u talked down a little earlier about how they dealt Jones and Tillman when it wasnt even the same gm?

i also dont like dealing for pitchers who have had multiple arms issues as he had forearm issues in the spring and then biceps earlier this year.

Reggie C. says:

It looks like his velo is peaking at 95 recently but sitting in the 92-94 range. If there’s lingering arm issues, then that’s something to consider for sure. But the more likely reason for decreased velo has been the reconversion to starter.

From the articles coming out of Rotoworld, there appears to be a genuine dissatisfaction with Morrow among the Seattle coaches. Insofar as my mention of the previous trade … yeah, that doesn’t hold up with the Morrow situation. It could however drive the price up on Morrow a bit, as he’s still a quality arm.

Salty Buggah says:

That called strike 1 to Swish is a call CC hasnt gotten tonight. He also has been squeezed a couple of time on the side too.

Dela G says:

anyone else see the nice twins in pink behind the yankees’ dugout?

Dela G says:

well, offense better wake up in the 5th so they can get to the rays bullpen (not that the rays’ bullpen is easy to hit against

Jimmy McNulty says:

I sure hope Kazmir reverts back to his ERA of 6+ for tonight.

Johan Iz My Brohan says:

Rich D. says:

DAMN IT! 4-1 Rays. Pitch right down broadway!

Jimmy McNulty says:

Salty Buggah says:

Dela G says:

damn it evan almighty

Yeah, that was a foul ball.

Hmm, maybe not. Either way, tough play and a tough call.

Doug says:

On a related note, that is the range of Swisher right there.

putt says:

Yah, good range, but if you scratch, it you catch it.

Rich D. says:

It was a super hard call… I would probably call it fair.

Jimmy McNulty says:

Lanny says:

Swisher should only play one position. DH.

Doug says:

You should only play DH!

Mike Pop says:

Designated Hater?

Ivan says:

Yeah but how many RF could even reach to that ball? Very few.

The Fallen Phoenix says:

…how many right fielders even get to that ball to have a chance of catching it?

The One says:
V says:
Lanny says:

Defending Swishers defense?

Even you guys cant be that much of super fan homers.

Swisher is probably 2-6 runs below the average RF this year, and this is the worst defensive year he’s ever had by far. That’s not a guy who should only be DHing. Those are guys like Manny Ramirez, Adam Dunn, Jason Bay and the like, guys who are 15-30 runs below average.

Swisher is perfectly serviceable in RF. He’s not a problem. Compared to the other outfielders we’ve had recently (like Sheffield, Abreu, Damon, Matsui, and Feared Williams), he’s practically Willie Mays in his prime.

The fact that people complain more about Swisher’s defense than they did about Abreu and Sheff is ridiculous.

Xavier Nady and Bobby Abreu probably don’t even get to that ball to make a play on it.

V says:

Oh lookie, they’re losing, Lanny’s back.

Ivan says:

putt says:

can’t catch a break tonight… Gotta keep it right here!

Reggie C. says:

Swish is gonna hear it from Girardi.

The One says:

Swisher is an above average defender…..his UZR says so…horse shit stat

So because it doesn’t agree with what you think it’s horse shit? It’s definitely not a perfect stat but just because it doesn’t say what you believe doesn’t mean it’s wrong.

The One says:

no not because of what i think…because swisher is not an above average defender…it is very flawed

V says:

Because he botched a ball that Nady, Abreu, Guerrero, Dye, etc., etc., etc., etc., can only dream of even touching?

The One says:

Nady, abreu, guerrero, dye dont play that into a triple…does UZA account for that?
how about the ball he could have played off the wall and held upton at third and crawford at second?

i dont watch dye enough to know all that much about his D…abreu might get there…prob not nady and guerrero 5 years ago does…not now

The One says:

*UZR

(Comments wont nest below this level)

V says:

And for every one he botches like an idiot, he catches 5 (IPTNOMA*) that you don’t even notice. He’s a net positive as a defender.

UZR is ‘calculated’ by people watching with their eyes! Just because you let the bias of one single observation override the 100s of chances he gets doesn’t make the stat flawed.

(Comments wont nest below this level)
V says:

* I pulled that number out of my ass.

The One says:

It is not the bias of one single observation….theres been quite a few this year…so i dont kno why you are referring to one single observation at all

i notice the good plays he makes just as much as the bad ones…and he has decent range but overall he is not an above average outfielder…my whole point is that uzr is a flawed way of evaluating defense for that reason

my whole point is that uzr is a flawed way of evaluating defense for that reason

No, it’s not perfect. No defensive stat is. However, UZR is better than nothing and is generally accurate (though it is prone to swings of SSS, like every other stat).

i notice the good plays he makes just as much as the bad ones

But you don’t remember the routine plays he makes as much as the bad ones. The spectacular flaws are more memorable than the normal solid ho-hum plays.

Why is Swisher not an above average defender? Because he dropped a ball on a pretty tough play? He’s not spectacular out there, he’s not gonna be Justin Upton, but he’s not gonna be Adam Dunn or Bobby Abreu. He’s an average to above average defender, by UZR or your eyes if you pay attention to more than the crappy plays (that just about everyone makes over the course of the season).

The One says:

hes made more crappy plays this year than abreu did all of last year….while maybe abreu doesn’t make that play (which is debatable) he does not turn it into a triple…and maybe abreu was “scared” of the wall but i bet he keeps upton at third and crawford at second on the ball earlier…and abreu has a better arm

V says:

And for ever crappy play Swisher botches, he makes 5 (IPTNOMA) that Abreu allowed to hit the wall for a double.

Abreu was an EPIC FAIL of a defender last season. Swisher is above average.

(Comments wont nest below this level)

Accent Shallow says:

Abreu was a freakin’ statue last year.

I’ll trade the occasional blunder like that for actually making plays on balls in the gaps.

(Comments wont nest below this level)

Mike Pop says:

Range >>>> Arm.

-40.3 in RF for his career for abreu. Even if you find that stat wack, that tells you that he is really horrid in RF.

He literally gives back all of his offenseive upgrades back with his defense.

(Comments wont nest below this level)

Range >>> arm. Brett Gardner has a pretty crappy arm but his range in CF is absolutely great. Melky has a great arm but his range in CF is above average at his absolute best. I’d take Gardner in CF over Leche every day of the week and twice on Sundays because of that range.

I’d be willing to bet that Swisher has gotten to many more balls than Abreu did last year at this point. For all the adventurous plays Swisher “makes” in the OF, he gets to a lot of balls in the RCF gap standing up and planted that a lot of guys don’t get to or have to get to on the run. Like I’ve always said, he’s not gonna be flashy and he’s not gonna be crazy good out there, but he’s gonna be average to above average. You don’t notice his good plays because he doesn’t make them look flashy.

(Comments wont nest below this level)
The One says:

I never said arm was greater than range…but it is a factor in defense…range is not everything…actually catching the ball counts too..and just because swisher got to that ball doesn’t make him an above average defender…he played a single/double into a triple….and he played the wall horribly allowing crawfords triple earlier….and i never said abreu was a good fielder…but the difference is not as crazy as you are making it sounds

The One says:

Example number 3 in this game alone…where does UZR evaluate a play like that?

The One says:

Example number 3 in this game alone…where does UZR evaluate a play like that?

The One says:

Are we going to defend that latest play on his above average range and compare him to dunn and dye now? another boneheaded play that probably does not show up in UZR but should factor in to defensive evaluation

but the difference is not as crazy as you are making it sounds</strong.

Yes it is. Seriously. Abreu is awful in right. He’s Adam Dunn-like out there.

The One says:

Abreu does not cover as much ground but has a stronger arm and does not make stupid plays like swisher does….im not even saying abreu is good or better than swisher….im sayin swisher is not an above average defender…at least abreu isnt an idiot out there

Swisher looking like an idiot frequently but having superior range and turning large numbers of flyballs into outs instead of hits

>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

Abreu not looking like an idiot and throwing out the occasional guy with his big arm but turning large numbers of flyballs into hits instead of outs

Well, technically, UZR doesn’t say he’s above average. It says he’s slightly, slightly below average.

Accent Shallow says:

He’s a funny player in that he has solid range, but it’s an adventure.

Lanny says:

Swisher makes Abreu look like a gold glover.

That statement is batshit insane. That’s easily the most incorrect thing you’ve ever said, and that’s saying something, Lanny.

John Duci says:

V says:

How. The. FUCK. Is that a triple?

CC picks Swish up.

James says:

Shouldnt Sabathia only have 2ER….

The One says:

jeter’s error was on the throw…it was a single with an error allowing longoria to 2nd….crawford scored on arods error with less than 2outs …crawford was on base via triple….they are both earned

James says:

oh yeah, alright, i thought there were 2 outs on A-Rods throw, thanks.

Isn’t Morrow a diabetic?

Accent Shallow says:

V says:

Yup. Has issues staying ‘up’ all game as a starter.

A.D. says:

Yes, type 1 I believe

Doug says:

He ain’t a starting pitchah becaue of the diabeetus.

VO says:

Swisher didn’t need to slide for that.

He was trying to avoid the bullpen mound.

Dela G says:

great job getting out of that CC

Salty Buggah says:

oh well, that triple didnt hurt. PLEASE OFFENSE, score some runs!!!!

nathan says:

I think this is a good game to get Melancon in…

Rich D. says:

Sorry to be a downer but Boston just took a 5-2 lead in the 5th… looks like the come back kids are going to have to do what they do best tonight if we want to keep a 2.5 game lead in the AL East.

Salty Buggah says:

that happened like in the 2nd or 3rd

A.D. says:

Kazmir raising his trade stock

If the worst thing that happens tonight is the Yanks are only in first by 1.5 games instead of 2.5, I’ll still count my blessings.

James says:

That happpened a while ago. Boston Sucks.

Salty Buggah says:

wow, way to hit guys! Now kazmir comes back out for the 7th

Accent Shallow says:

Yeah, you shouldn’t let him get into the 7th. He throws way too many pitches.

Dela G says:

yikes, the offense trying to make my predictions look like garbage

James says:

They took that lead in the 3rd…

Rich D. says:

I heard today that the Angels had interest in Kazmir and TB is wiling to trade him. That could REALLY hurts the Yanks in the long run.

Dela G says:

hey look, its brett tomko painting kazmir…

Doug says:

Assuming he doesn’t get DFA’d first.

Dela G says:
Doug says:

It’s basically Penelope’s loom from The Oddysey – the longer he takes to paint the picture, the longer he stays on the team.

Dela G says:

you do know they dfa’s him last week, right :)

Accent Shallow says:

Somehow I think Penelope had a little more leverage.

Rich D. says:

Probably last inning for CC… ‘Pen should start throwing.

Ivan says:

Doug says:

Wow, does Johnny throw like a female child. He had to launch the ball into the sky to get it to 2nd.

James says:

only 1 run against Kazmir hurts… deep deep down it hurts.

Steve in PDX says:

my fault. i sat him on my fantasy team after starting shields last night.

Lanny says:

CC with another clunker. Would be nice to see him win a big game against a good team once.

Mike Pop says:

This was a big game?

Lanny, you are the best dude. 9-3 in his last 15 starts, Yanks have been ROLLING. Yet, you still bitch and moan.

Had CC pitched a gem tonight, I guarantee you Lanny would have said it wasn’t a big game. It only became a big game when CC lost it.

There’s always a negative spin for the Lan-Man.

Don’t you remember that brilliant effort when Sabathia outlasted Verlander and the first place Tigers two starts ago?

Me neither.

The Tigers aren’t a big team.

/Lanny’d

Lanny says:

How are the Tigers a good team? Did you notice that lineup? And if Sabathia had that first 2 innings vs the Sox or Angels or Rays they would have had 5 runs.

teix is the man says:

I think I hear your mom telling you that your bedtime is fast approaching.

I hate the comments when they’re losing. Let’s scrutinize every stupid little thing we possibly can, and ignore the fact that they’re 23-6 in their last 29 games.

Mikebk says:

lanny only comes out for the losses.

Mikebk says:

holy shiznit melancon is actually throwing.

Brazilian Yankee says:

On a night where we could have made the playoff race a 2-team race, our Ace didn’t come through for us. This sucks.

Mike Pop says:
Brazilian Yankee says:

I’m not worried. I know we are the better team in the East. Still, it would have been nice to win this game. Especially with our ace going against a struggling pitcher not far removed from a long layoff due to injury.

Too bad there’s not a game against the Rays tomorrow…

Yankee1010 says:

Were the Rays going home for the rest of the year if they lost tonight?

Jackson says:

Holy hyperbole, this is a bit of an exaggeration buddy.

Tex is obviously a DH. How does he play that into a single?

James says:
Lanny says:

Please dont tell us that Swisher is a good def RF. Now thats comedy.

Ivan says:

Bartlett might be the least fearing .331 hitter eva.

Reggie C. says:

freddy sanchez waves..

Ivan says:

Rich D. says:

Where is CC to cover???

Doug says:

Tex had to leap like three feet in the air to knock the ball down. There is no way CC could have reacted fast enough to back up the bag.

James says:

Has there been any pitcher more unlucky than CC this year?

Lanny says:

Any other excuses for him? Strike zone? Umps? Too big a uni?

Yo, Lanny, for me, just as a personal favor, could you show up to ONE game thread during a win? If you do, I’ll send you a buck or something. Come on. Please?

Accent Shallow says:

Yup, every poor performance is due to the player being an overpaid, gutless choker with no ability.

Doug says:

Not even the manliest defensive effort from Tex can save a run. Nothing is going our way tonight.

I just had a mini nightmare of Tex getting a cleat to the hand.

Jake H says:

Great effort tonight.

Doug says:

F FOR EFFORT AMIRITE GUYS

Now when Melancon comes in and shows a little bit of rust, everyone’s gonna say ‘this is why he hasn’t pitched since July 10th.’

Salty Buggah says:

4 runs are not too much for us. I just wish we could have knocked out Kazmir earlier. I hope their pen implodes tonight.

Also, I wish we can get to Garza tomorrow and that Joba pitches well again.

charlespoet says:

CC just looks tired.

Ivan says:

Yanks can still win this game guys.

Johan Iz My Brohan says:

Swisher at it again

teix is the man says:

Listening to Kay compounds a Yankee deficit

Jake H says:

Get swish the f out of here.

Dela G says:

charlespoet says:

Well this type of game was bound to happen. The icky Yankees appeared tonight.

Doug says:

Nick Swisher: instanttrombone.com

James says:

CC looks more frustrated… balls are hit exactly where someone can’t make a play, than when they can make a play, they dont make a very good one…

A.D. says:

Wheels came off the defensive bus

Mike Pop says:

I blame Swisher for this loss!!

Lanny says:

Little late for the monthly Melancon appearance.

Mike Pop says:

Clueless Joe at it again.

C Bleak says:

You can give me all the UZR and runs saved crap all you want. I’m so tired of watching Swisher butcher right field.

Rich D. says:

Doug says:

Melancon! Stay tuned for partial excitement.

Reggie C. says:

Swish defies UZR … i just dont see it…

Lanny says:

There are no def stats that beats using common sense and your eyes.

Mike Pop says:

So, you’re saying UZR is a good thing?

You do realize that UZR is tabulated by guys watching game after game after game, right?

Jake H says:

Swish neesd a day off out of the field.

Jose says:

Buehrle is perfect through 4. He has a shot at the record for most consecutive batters retired.

Salty Buggah says:

lets hope Melancon doesnt show his rust and can last an inning or 2.

Hova says:

God awful play tonight. They must have been partying in those fine TB “establishments” for A-Rod’s 34th birthday.

putt says:

Dela G says:

cc needs to rest a while

he looked dog tired

Johan Iz My Brohan says:

Nice Melancon!

Girardi keep him in another inning or 2!

Ivan says:

Oh well look on the bright side guys, the yanks were playing well before this game and still lead the division.

Mike Pop says:

There are never bright sides to losses with a 200 mill payroll!!

Salty Buggah says:

you mean there is a bright side to losing only the 2nd time in 12 games? Huh, didnt know. I though the season was ova!

Yankee1010 says:

You would think Tampa took our first born tonight.

Jake H says:

Love how this team can’t beat up a pitcher who has sucked for most of the year.

Salty Buggah says:

Lombardi? Is that you?

Jake H says:

Nope just frustrated how the players didn’t bring anything to the stadium today.

Salty Buggah says:

OK, you cannot say we didn’t try. Losing doesn’t imply that. We struggled but don’t say we mailed it in. And we have the best offense in baseball so one clunker from them (and CC of course) will happen once in a while.

nathan says:

Matt Garza… we need a clunker from u…

Charlie says:

even though the defense clearly shat the bed multiple times tonight, its not like CC was that great. He fell behind batters and got hit rather hard for most of the game.

Mike Pop says:

The Yankees players don’t care about other teams players.

Dela G says:

oh wow, that really sucked

trueblue says:

CC, Defense, or the Offense.. I Can’t decide who ahs had a shittier night so far.

Ivan says:

Well lets see what Melancon can do.

Mikebk says:

are the rays showcasing Kazmir tonight cause there really wasnt a reason to send him back out for the 7th w a 5 run lead?

Brazilian Yankee says:

This game is just like that game early in the season against Verlander when he was struggling terribly.

Kazmir should send the Yankees a thank you note for turning his season around.

Dela G says:

melancon looks good at the beginning

Salty Buggah says:

We had a lot of crushed balls today that were caught and some defensive misplays, it just is not out day. Yes, CC kinda sucked a bit, but we still didnt have luck on our side.

Mike Pop says:

I’m going to jinx Marky B right now.

You will not throw another one.

You will not make this putt….you JACKASS.

Mike Pop says:

Suck my white ass ball!!!

I eat pieces of shit like you for breakfast.

Mike Pop says:

You eat pieces of shit for breakfast?

No!

Hey! You no want breakfast?!

nathan says:

How about one Mr Buehrle

Charlie says:

that was a strike.. and melancon looks good

Dela G says:

wow melancon looked incredible

Mikebk says:

excellent work melancon. maybe he is earning a little trust to get more chances.

Accent Shallow says:

Jeez, maybe they should sit Melancon for two weeks more often if he’s gonna pitch like this.

Doug says:

Melancon gets the curveball on the third try!

Doug says:

What is Kazmir still doing out here

Salty Buggah says:

Kazmir for the 8th?

Mikebk says:

why is Kaz back out there unless he is being showcased? dude has had injury troubles and is now throwing 110 pitches.

Dela G says:

swisha finally gets that base hit

Mike Pop says:

2 hrs last night..

Dela G says:

he fouled it by an inch in the earlier pitch….

Mikebk says:

buehrle major league record 43 straight retired batters

Mike Pop says:

Baaaaaah, isn’t that just the pickle on the giant crap sandwich that is this game?

/Elliot Reid.

Mikebk says:

“8:30pm: There’s more from Morosi and Rosenthal, who say scouts from the Phillies, Rangers, Yankees and Brewers are all checking out Washburn’s start tonight.”

Brazilian Yankee says:

And that’s the ballgame. Let’s hope the Yankees show up tomorrow.

Salty Buggah says:

I hope you aren’t saying that they didn’t try today

Zach says:

or that this team isnt capable of coming back

Brazilian Yankee says:

They certainly didn’t bring their A game today. Let’s hope they do tomorrow.

Salty Buggah says:

They struggled but doesnt mean they didn’t try

Brazilian Yankee says:

You are right. What I meant to say is this is most definately not the Yankees we are used to watch. For whatever reasons they didn’t play up to their potential today. Let’s hope they do tomorrow.

Yup.

It’s baseball. Shit happens, you can’t let it get to you too much. Hope for better results tomorrow.

Salty Buggah says:

I dont know if I should be happy that Jeter got that DP out of the way now or mad since he killed a potential rally.

Mikebk says:

tough to consider that a potential rally at that point.

Salty Buggah says:

true but you never know the Yanks, especially with the 2-3-4 hitters up next.

Honestly, with that offense, it’s never tough to consider a rally.

Accent Shallow says:

Seems like Jeter’s been good at avoiding that.

So it goes.

Reggie C. says:

Crushed … but still an out.

The Evil Empire says:

44 in a row for Buehrle!

The Evil Empire says:
Mikebk says:

walk ends it but still the no-no out there.

Salty Buggah says:

Jackson says:

So Melancon might be earning a few more innings in the near future.

Mikebk says:

got unlucky there

Accent Shallow says:

Perfect game done, as Buerhle walks Alexi Casilla.

See, it’s not only Yankee pitchers who walk shitty hitters.

Accent Shallow says:

No hitter done as well.

Mikebk says:

vintage Melancon there. 20 pitches for 7 outs.

Dela G says:

vintage?

who knew he has been around long enough to ever be vintage

Lanny says:

Vintage? Maybe in Trenton.

Accent Shallow says:

20 pitches, 2.1 innings. Woo. That’s the Melancon we’re used to seeing in DOTF.

Let’s see if he can do it with the game on the line.

Jon G says:

Yep – exactly… Excited to see more of him.

He could potentially be HUGE down the stretch — better than Bruney and Robertson — if we can get him going…

This is a guy who has real 8th inning potential…

Zach says:

that was also said about DRob in his first outings, then we all got tired of his walks. so lets give melancon more than 7 IP

Hmmm… Let’s say:

1) Mo remains holy
2) Aceves keeps mowing guys down
3) Coke keeps mowing guys down
4) Bruney rights himself
5) Melancon shakes off the rust/jitters and pitches like the buzzsaw he’s been in the minors
6) Marte comes back strong from injury
7) Joba goes to the pen when he approaches his innings limits…

I’d say we’d have 7 great, dominant relievers without including a certain Mr. Phil Hughes, so you-know-who should be eligble to move to the rotation in late August/early September to get ready to be the 4th starter for the playoffs.

Salty Buggah says:

Ah damn, I truly though we would start a rally here. Oh well, Tex got a DP out of the way now.

Dela G says:

alex just singeled

aint over yet

Salty Buggah says:

yea but we had a way better chance before the DP by Tex

Mikebk says:

maybe a-rod heating up again.

Doug says:

A-Rod is all “F U RAYS FANS I AM NOT STRIKING OUT”

Doug says:

Peace out Randy Choate you could not finish the game even after being gifted a DP by Mark Teixeira

Doug says:

Sup JP Howell apparently your team’s bullpen is so trash that Joe Maddon does not trust anyone with a 6-2 lead besides the closer

Salty Buggah says:

now those DP’s hurt slightly more

Dela G says:

here come the yankees

Accent Shallow says:

Howell?

Guess Maddon isn’t fucking around.

Ivan says:

Salty Buggah says:

well, at least we used their bullpen a bit.

Dela G says:

aaand there go the yankes

Dorian says:

WE ARE AWFUL. ONLY 22 GAMES OVER AND ONLY LEADING THE DIVISION BY ONE GAME. WHAT IS THIS GARBAGE?

Russell NY says:

Season is over. Trade Jeter.

Mikebk says:

anyone watching the washburn start?

Mikebk says:

a’s trying to make a rally down 6-4 now in the 8th.

Batting Nomar third is such an awful lineup move as to be a fireable offense. The three guys after him all have a higher OPS.

Doug says:

peteabe says wang having season-ending shoulder surgery tomorrow morning

Manimal says:

Vintage Melancon. Me likey.

Watching Haren v. Hamels on MLB.TV; this should be a good one.

Damn, the Phillies have Haren up to 70 through 2 2/3.

raysam says:

c.c. is not a pure ace more like a bluecollar ace he struggles way too much cash may have to go get doc

There are good reasons for getting Roy Halladay. This is not one of them.

raysam says:

we definetely need another ace

Manimal says:

Do you understand what an “ace” is? Sabathia is the perfect definition of an Ace. We do not need Roy Halladay, nor should we even explore giving an arm and a leg for him.

Lanny says:

How does an ace give up 5 runs in 5 innings?

I think Manimal forgot the one thing you know, Lanny, that no one else does: pitchers designated as aces never have bad games ever.

David Cone was an ace. He went 35-0 with a 0.00 ERA every single year in pinstripes, I remember it like it was yesterday.

That was back when men were men and a superidiot like Cashman wasn’t allowed to make decisions, he just sat his bitch-ass in the back of the room and shut the hell up while the grown folks talked.

Zach says:

come on dude, i know it was a frustrating game but do we have to do this after every loss?
here are the list of things that get bitched about
a. CC isnt an ace
b. Joba should be in the bullpen
c. Swisher is a 4th OF
d. why didnt we use melancon
e. use mo in the 8th in a big spot and bruney in the 9th
f. cano is lazy / melky is unmotivated

Zach says:

tie game in boston! pap blew 3 run lead

KW says:

on a pair of nick green errors

attaboy nick

Steve H says:

But Nick Green and his 80 OPS+ was another ridiculously shrewd move by Theo!!!

Thomas A. Anderson says:

Granted, boston will probably win this cause they are at home, but that’s the Nick Green we came to know a couple of years ago.

Steve H says:

This would be uuuuge if Oakland can win this game.

Not really in the grand scheme of things, but it would be extremely fun to see.

Chip says:

I’m enjoying watching Papelbon get hit around the park

Dela G says:

paplebon blew the lead

thank mo

dan says:

I dont know if anyone has put this stat up, but it is very depressing; CC 1-8 vs teams over .500. Call me crazy but I think the Yanks might face some more of those teams come Oct.

Rich D. says:

Anyone know AJ’s numbers vs. teams over .500?

Johan Iz My Brohan says:

In play, run(s)

YES!

Dela G says:

YES!!!

A’s TAKE THE LEAD!

ZK says:

How did Davis score from first on a single?

Dela G says:

he stole second

then he scored

ZK says:

Dela G says:

INSURANCE RUNS!

9-7 A’s

Rich D. says:

WOW!!!! MY NIGHT WENT FROM BAD (YANKS LOST), TO TERRIBLE (WANG’S SEASON ENDING SURGERY), TO GREAT WITH THE SOX BLOWING THE LEAD!

Brazilian Yankee says:

Hold up on that one. Bailey is about to blow the game for the A’s.

bonestock94 says:

Well 1st and 2nd no outs for Boston now, let’s hope Bailey can get his shit together..

bonestock94 says:

Man on 3rd 2 outs, fuck, anything can tie the game now..

DGeezy says:

come on 1 more out dammmit

Johan Iz My Brohan says:

bonestock94 says:

Wooooooooooooooooo

Rich D. says:

AND THE BALL GAME IS OVER! YES!!! RED SOX LOSE! PAPELBON SUCKS! YANKEES STAY 2.5 GAMES UP!

DGeezy says:

YESSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS!!!!!!!!

Russell NY says:

This is so satisfying.

Dela G says:

SOX LOSE SOX LOSE SOX LOSE!

bonestock94 says:

If Pedroia and Youk did some game winning heroics I think I would’ve cried. BSPN would actually find something more annoying to report on than Brett Favre’s last bowel movement.

Jimmy McNulty says:

Sox are totally getting Halladay :(
