Game 102: Shi-Town

By

(I keed, I keed, Chicago’s a great city)

Coming off arguably their biggest series win of the season, the Yankees head into Chicago’s south side for a four game set against the 51-51 White Sox. Just to give you an idea of how different the AL East and AL Central are, the ChiSox would be sitting in fourth place in the East, eleven games back in the loss column for first. Instead, they’re just three back of the Tigers and very much in the thick of the race.

I’m sure Nick Swisher and Ozzie Guillen will have a blast catching up during batting practice and stuff. We all know they had a harmonious relationship during Nick’s time with the White Sox, two peas in a pod almost.

Okay seriously, Ozzie effing hated Swish. I know some Yankee fans do as well because the guy botches the occasional defensive play, but Ozzie’s dislike for the guy allowed the Yanks to acquire an incredibly productive outfielder (120 OPS+) for basically nothing. So thanks, Oz. Keep smartballin’ teams to death, or whatever the hell they’re calling it these days. You’re only three games back after all.

The Red Sox already won this afternoon, so the division lead currently sits at three games. Let’s pick up that extra half-game tonight. Here’s the lineup that’ll oppose Gavin Floyd:

Jeter, SS
Damon, LF
Teixeira, 1B
A-Rod, 3B
Matsui, DH
Swisher, RF
Cano, 2B
Melky, CF
Molina, C

And on the mound, good ol’ Andy Pettitte.

  1. It feels like it’s been a while since AP won a game. I want that to change.

  2. J.R. says:

Any word on CF? Or is it just Melky till Brett gets back?

    • Mike Pop says:

      Corey Patterson…

      • Tony says:

        AJAXXXXXXXXXXXXXX.

I don’t get this thing about him having his development stunted by a callup in August. There’s only a month of the AAA season left anyway. If he can get 10 ABs a week, get in some defensive subs, pinch run, and get instruction from an MLB hitting coach while surrounded by MLB hitters, I don’t see how it’s a negative.

        • J.R. says:

That actually makes alot of sense. And when Brett comes back in 2 weeks you can send him down. Then bring him back for September.

        • Rocky Road Redemption (formerly RAB poster) says:

          It’s about playing every day.

          • Tony says:

Are you going to be incensed in a month when his season ends? It’s not like it’s April right now.

            • Rocky Road Redemption (formerly RAB poster) says:

I’m not advocating one way or the other, just giving the reasoning behind it.

          • J.R. says:

Yeah but at most he doesn’t play everyday for 3 weeks?

How much more is he really going to develop in AAA in 3 weeks? I don’t know, but it can’t be a ton.

        • Todd says:

I’m with you on this one. Not only is the “harm” on his development overstated, this team needs an athletic OFer to fill Gardner’s role. Gardner has been exteremely valuablke to this team, so why go without a similar player if you do not have to.

      • I think I’d rather punch myself in the nuts than watch Patterson suit up for the Yanks.

  3. Dela G says:

    • OmgZombies! says:

lamoo good luck selling those here

    • Rocky Road Redemption (formerly RAB poster) says:

      Cost?

I’m not really interested in buying the seats, I don’t live close enough, but I’m curious as to what decent seats to a Yanks/Sox game at the stadium goes for.

    • Marcus says:

Yikes, watch out posting your email like that in a blog/message board. Spammers use software scan the internet looking for email addresses and will now relentlessly spam that address.

FYI, a good practice is to type: pmarting5 (at) hotmail.com

  8. Salty Buggah says:

I hope our offense can come out firing again, especially A-rod (he needs to HR soon). And I hope Andy has a brilliant start like last time, without the implosion (Ace’s “fault” or not, he did allow the baserunners, Ace just allowed them to score).

  9. Salty Buggah says:

I love how ESPN doesn’t give a damn about the Big Papi/Manny scandal. Gammons said to “forgive and move on.” Papi claims he didn’t know but once he finds out what he tested positive for, he won’t lie.

I honestly like that there’s no commotion but they tore A-rod apart as much as they could. Before that, everyone questioned the Yanks’ titles. However, Gammons says that they tested positive in 2003 but Boston won it in 2004 so it’s not tainted. I’m tired of the bias but there’s nothing you can do about it unfortunately except hope the Yanks win multiple WS again, starting this year.

  10. GG says:

So Big Popout addresses the media behind some enormous sunglasses, spits some BS and says, yea I dunno whats up, I’ll look into it and get back to you….I can imagine Alex getting away with that crap…wait no, I can’t

    • Steve H says:

Yeah, he doesn’t know what he tested positive for, which I believe. He was probably on several different steroids, and without knowing which one he was busted for, doesn’t want to name something and be wrong.

      • GG says:

I agree. He was not however pressed at all by giving what was basically an I’ll get back to you, but what do you expect from a star of the media’s favorite team

      • Salty Buggah says:

That makes sense and has a good chance of being right.

    • Marcus says:

My question is: didn’t A-Rod know about being on the list prior to it being released to the press? I can’t imagine that Big Papi had no indication at all that he was on the list, that’s BS.

I can actually understand not wanting to be fully forthcoming in a situation where you haven’t really prepared and reporters are surrounding you ready to jump on anything you say, but to feign ignorance is to set oneself up for more dirt-digging later.

      • Salty Buggah says:

Yea, that’s what I thought. I thought the players were informed for the test or at least informed ahead of time by whoever found out (NY Times) and had a chance to say something (but Ortiz declined then too). The thing is that he plays for the Sox, so he gets a pass for denying or saying things like he did.

  11. blah says:

zOMG this lineup sucks where’s posada?

  12. Rocky Road Redemption (formerly RAB poster) says:

There’s no such thing as tainted championships…there are tainted players, and even that’s very debateable. Personal flaws should not be foisted onto a team, it’s not like a team wide conspiracy like the Black sox scandal. And even then notice that Cincinatti wasn’t even stripped of it’s title.

I gurantee you the Yankees had players on those 90′s WS teams that juiced…should we give back the 2000 WS rings because Clemens was on the team? Or asterisk them?

    • Salty Buggah says:

True and I agree but only if it’s the Yankees WS title, it’s tainted to the MSM but everyone else gets a pass.

      • Dayman, fighter of the Nightman says:

I wish people would get over the media “bias” reasoning. ESPN and all other main stream media outlets provide whatever sells. Everyone knows that in the 90′s the Yankees got top billing because they were winning, and now it’s the Sox. As far as ARod, of course he got more scrutiny, he is the highest paid player on the team with the highest payroll, and has been almost universally thought of as the next Home Run King.

    • The Artist says:

Yeah, you either admit everything was tainted or say so many were cheating that it was a even playing field. But to say the Sox rings are tainted and ignore/defend the Yankee championships just doesn’t fly.

      • Salty Buggah says:

I think I may have sounded like that in comment above. I actually don’t think anyone’s rings are tainted but was pointing out how the media taints the Yanks WS but Boston gets a pass.

        • The Artist says:

That’s fair to criticize, nobody should be given a pass.

I agree that the rings aren’t tainted. I was a huge anti-steroid guy when this stuff was all first coming out, but now that its clear to me it was so pervasive I can’t throw an entire era out the window. It happened, it is what it is and we just need to deal with it somehow. I would even put some of the juicers in the HOF. I would simply raise the bar for those players.

    • ARX says:

Asterisk = taint imho. To say they can’t exactly give the rings back is to say we cant completely invalidate or vacate their titles, which is true. But tainted? Hell yes (and yes, I know, every champoinship in the last 15-25 years is probably tainted to a degree….its just nice to finally have the Sox in the same boat.)

  13. Joe B. says:

Apparently KC is getting calls about Bannister. Want.

    • Clemson Rob says:

sorry. didn’t see your post. I like him too. More of a ground ball guy and doesn’t give up too many HRs.

  14. Clemson Rob says:

MLBTR mentioned the Royals considering trading Brian Bannister. What are everyone’s thoughts about trading for him?

  15. Steve H says:

After last night, I never expect to hear Joba to the pen. That being said, here’s some data I pulled up today to put the nail in the coffin (I wish).

Jon Lester, last year at 24, after already making 26 career starts.
    16-6, 3.21 ERA, 1.27 WHIP, 6.5 K/9, 2.3 K/BB, 152k’s in 210 innings.

    Josh Beckett’s first 25 starts, in the NL(minors) at 21 and 22
    8-9, 3.62 ERA, 1.23 WHIP, 9.4 K/9, 2.49 K/BB, 137k’s in 131 innings

Joba’s first 33 starts, in the AL East, at 22 and 23 years old.
    10-3, 3.27 ERA, 1.36 WHIP, 8.7 K/9, 2.28 K/BB, 171k’s in 176 innings.

So Joba is off to a better start than Beckett and his first 33 starts were almost as good as Lester’s great breakout year last year. Joba was younger and less experience, and yet still has #’s to compare.

    • ANDY PETTITTE IS A STARTING PITCHAH!!!!

      • ARX says:

I’ve seen the ‘xyz IS A STARTING PITCHAH!’ thing a few times here, but (honest tho potentially newb question) is it intended to be sarcasm? Or a humorous reminder of a particularly stupid Francessa quote? I’m not sure where it came from.

        • Salty Buggah says:

Yea, its a Francesa thing. He was arguing how Joba should be in the pen because his #’s in the rotation are atrocious and the caller was trying to say that Andy Pettitte was pitching worse then Joba but Francesa ignorantly kept cutting him off because he knew the caller was right by yelling “ANDY PETTITTE IS A STARTING PITCHAHH.” That meant that you cannot compare a starter to Joba because Joba is (or in his eyes) a reliever.

        • The Artist says:

Its started with a call from Alex from Bedminster about Joba Chamberlain. He blew up about 2 minutes into it, and then it started exploding all over the internet with clips of him screaming and remixes like this

    • JGS says:

you’re using logic. that won’t convince anyone

    • Salty Buggah says:

My eyes don’t tell me that. He has stunk in almost every start except like 2. Stats don’t tell you everything. Only my eyes are right. lester/Beckett were the best to ever step on this planet, Joba is a bust and should be in TEH EIGHTH!!!

    • Jeremy says:

“After last night, I never expect to hear Joba to the pen.”

I thought the exact same thing after Joba outdueled Beckett in that incredible 1-0 Fenway game. That was July 2008. That should have silenced the B-Jobbers forever. After that game, I’m convinced nothing will.

      • JGS says:

this is not just last night’s performance though, this is three dominating starts in a row

    • Mike bk says:

you will hear it not about him staying there but how he might have to go there because of the innings limit to close the year.

  16. The Artist says:

I was looking at Joba’s MLB comps through age 22, but unfortunately most of them were relievers. Most likely due to his lack of innings before this season.

But then I came across this lil’ oddity:

    Dave DeBusschere (949)

    http://www.baseball-reference......da01.shtml

Yes, THAT Dave DeBusschere. He pitched for the White Sox at age 21-22 with some success before choosing a career in basketball.

  17. JGS says:

uch, I hate phantom rain delays.

what is going to be, about an hour before they actually start?

  18. VO says:

Alright I know this is a GAME thread but because it’s a rain delay I don’t feel as bad bringing this up. Does anyone else feel like Manny Ramirez’s numbers are even more in question then other players. I mean it’s not like he did it in 2003 and stopped as he was just busted for breaking the drug policy again.

    • Mike Pop says:

A-Rod could of been doing the same thing.

Alot of players could of been doing it, to be honest, doesn’t change the way I look at him. Manny is an amazing hitter.

      • Salty Buggah says:

I agree but I am doubting Big Papi’s #’s a bit. A guy who went from being nontendered to being a MVP contender every year? At least Manny and A-rod had done (if we assume they didn’t do roids that early) it earlier too. But Papi just all of a sudden starting hitting when he went to Boston.

    • Salty Buggah says:

BTW, Game threads are like open threads so nothing is off-topic I think.

  19. Johan Iz My Brohan says:

Does anyone find the title of this post-game story title on MLB.com quite humorous?

“Papi punctures A’s plans, lifts Red Sox”

  20. So how much better do we think Sherrill’s numbers will get in the NL West?

  21. Joao says:

    Start at hour??

  22. So I think I have a new favorite author in Alexndre Dumas.

    What about you guys?

    (what? It’s a rain delay!)

    • Heywood: The Count of Monte Crisco…
Floyd: That’s “Cristo” you dumb shit.
      Heywood: …by Alexandree Dumb-ass. Dumb-ass.
Andy Dufresne: Dumb-ass? “Dumas”. You know what it’s about? You’ll like it, it’s about a prison break.
Red: We oughta file that under “Educational” too, oughten we?

Everything he writes has me thinking, “I’ve been waiting for this exact story to be told!”

(But I’ll never forget the first time I read The Three Musketeers. I wanted to learn swordplay so bad.)

      • I LOVE Neil Gaiman. I saw him speak in November, even got a signed book.

stardust and Sandman are my faves, and the Graveyard book is worth it, even though it’s a children’s tale.

        • Riddering says:

Oh, lucky! If it’s possible, he seems like an even cooler guy than he is a talented writer.

Both Coraline and Graveyard Book were good reads–I love his range. He can write such stuff that’s in Sandman and American Gods and then write juvenile lit without any awkwardness.

  30. Mike bk says:

what would getting bannister cost in a package? i was just reading comments on mlbtr and i heard romine + zmac/nova. seems a little steep, so figured i would get other opinions.

Per PeteAbe tarp is coming up

  34. Capital T says:

I’m in the Western Chicago Burbs and it stopped raining 20 minutes ago. Game should start soon

  35. VO says:

7:58pm: Jayson Stark and Buster Olney of ESPN.com report that the Yankees inquired about Bannister, but talks didn’t develop because the Yankees asked the Royals to pay the $650k that remains on Bannister’s 2009 contract. Since when does $650k stop the Yanks from making a deal? As Stark and Olney say, welcome to the wacky world of baseball 2009.

For $650K the Yankees are being held back? Are you kidding?

    • This is worrying. They already have Pittsburgh paying Hinske’s salary…

If the Yankees can’t afford $650k, something’s not right.

      • VO says:

I know they were serious about not adding salary but come on 650K shouldn’t be that big of a deal.

        • If they can’t take on $650 k than one of three things is going on:

          1) There’s a plan for Halladay (and his contract) in the works and the Yanks don’t want to take on anything else;

          2) The team’s in financial trouble we know not of,

          3) They just don’t like Bannister.

        • Mike Axisa says:

We don’t know the details. Maybe the Yanks felt they were giving up too much in terms of prospects to absorb his salary as well.

It doesn’t seem like much, but remember $650k for the Yankees is really $910k because of the salary cap.

    • Dela G says:

      you serious?

these arent the irates we are talking about

    • Maybe it’s just another way of saying they weren’t that into Bannister considering the package they’d have to give up?

    • Mike bk says:

relax people. usually what happens is a team will be asked to pay the salary in order to get better prospects back. the yankees may either want them to pay the salary or take less in terms of players back.

      • Joe B. says:

This. I’m hoping this isn’t the end of talks. I love love LOVE Bannister, and would be giddy as all hell if they were to pick him up.

  36. VO says:

  42. cjc says:

10 pithc inning with a walk hmm don’t see that everyday

  43. Salty Buggah says:

not a good start but lets get em next time

    • handtius says:

do you expect them to score in the first inning of every game? just a question because you’ve said this same thing a few times after the first inning. Sometimes it takes a few inning, reading the pitcher, etc. etc.

      • Salty Buggah says:

of course not but 2 1st pitch swinging outs isnt good right? But im not complaining (just trying to hope my hoping gets them going)

  44. Wow, Gordon Beckham is about the same size as my brother. Scary.

  45. Nick Swisher: Mostly cheers.

  58. yankees=warriors says:

You guys should criticize Melky more. Ever since that article, he has been gettin better!

  59. Dela G says:

    wow melky crushed that

  60. Salty Buggah says:

    damn, that kinda sucked

  61. Dela G says:

    we’ll get em next time

  62. Jackson says:

The umps zone is enormous tonight.

  63. Januz says:

I think the reason why they asked KC to pay Bannister’s salary is that he is not target #1. Check this out from Tyler Kepner vis http://www.mlbtraderumors.com. Yanks still talking with Seattle about Washburn. No reason to be too optimistic at this point, but they do have a need. The decision is not about money: According to Cot’s Baseball Contracts Washburn’s contract is $10.35m, while Bannister’s is $1.7357m. In addition, the Yankees will take $50m off the payroll for 2010, which is not an insiginificant number.

    • Mike bk says:

CC goes up 9 mil, swish up 1.4, jete up 1,

      Nady 6.55, damon 13, matsui 13, andy 5.5, wang 5, molina 2

thats 11.4 added…45.05 subtracts so basically 33.5 mil saved. wang and nady could be back as well as raise to melky. dont think hughes and joba are arb eligible yet.

  64. handtius says:

I would like to see an andy pick-off. feel like it’s been too long.

  65. Doug says:

Gordon Beckham: best at-bast music in baseball.

At least G-Becks is on my fantasy team.

  68. Salty Buggah says:

    damn

  69. Doug says:

Crap, Gordon Beckham just used Andy Pettitte’s love tonight.

  70. Dela G says:

    damn gordon is good

  71. Salty Buggah says:

    OK, lets go offense

  72. Salty Buggah says:

I hope Andy is a bit more efficient from here on

  73. Brazilian Yankee says:

It would be nice if the offense could wake up now.

  74. When’s the last time Andy got serious run support?

    • chriskeo says:

I dont know, but if he got what i believe is the average 5 runs a game he would be winning a lot, well i think the team scored 5 runs by the end of his last game but that was a ninth inning rally

    • Salty Buggah says:

I think the Blue Jays game in which he imploded

    • Mike bk says:

they did score 8 in the game he pitched vs anaheim and 6 in the toronto game.

  75. Dela G says:

    wow tex got fooled

  76. Riddering says:

    This ump loves his strikeouts.

    god I hate rain delays

  86. Dela G says:

my god this is a very very fast game

    1.25 hours = 5 full innings?

  87. Molina just told Kay to STFU.

    • Johan Iz My Brohan says:

Their cheaters are better than ours? I don’t think so.

      • handtius says:

When he says that, it is sarcasm. He’s saying no one should be proud of being a cheater, specifically the 2004 redsox.

    • Pasqua says:

Worth even more of a read is the comments following the article. The level of denial and bad, defense attorney-like posturing is mind boggling. Many of these people seem to be one lost brain cell away from arguing that, “Just because he tested positive doesn’t mean he cheated!”

“We don’t even know what he tested positive for!” Yes, that’s true. Maybe it was Mike & Ike’s. Illegal, performance-enhancing Mike & Ike’s.

      • handtius says:

        fav:

I already posted this on mazz’s article but I’ll say it again. Ortiz and Ramirez were tested in 2003. THE SOX WON IT ALL IN 04 AND 07. Why would those two, who were so conveniently let off the hook by the MLB, no suspension, no fine, no announcement, no ANYTHING, continue cheating? Plus, not to be rude, but Manny and Papi, are and were FAT! Everybody knows about Ortiz but even Manny was. I’ve seen him in the backround of pictures in the Sox locker room and hes fat.

  88. Johan Iz My Brohan says:

Of all people, Molina gets a hit…

  89. Riddering says:

Please don’t waste this lead-off double, guys.

  90. yankees=warriors says:

So, do we go small ball now?

  91. Salty Buggah says:

now he gets a hit…lets bring him home guys

  92. Chip says:

I was just thinking to myself: This would be a game where Molina hits one out and then he did! (kinda)

  93. Jake H says:

This ump has a wide zone for both teams

  94. Dela G says:

    HOLY JESUS JOSE MOLINA!

  95. nathan says:

  97. Way to go, Johnny!

  98. yankees=warriors says:

    Wow, Dmon!

  99. SouthernYankeeFan says:

    so hot

  100. V says:

Will someone tell Ricciardi to just sh** or get off the pot already?

We get it. You’re not dealing Halladay unless you’re wowed. You haven’t been wowed. You’re not going to be wowed. No one wants to wow you. The deadline was Tuesday, except it wasn’t. You’re still open to trading him, but you don’t think you will.

    WE GET IT!

Now, trade him, or don’t, but stop talking about it, dumbass.

  101. Johan Iz My Brohan says:

    DAMONNNNNNNNNNNNNNN!

  102. Salty Buggah says:

    JOHNNY!!!!!!!!!!

  103. Little Bill says:

Johnny and Jose have tied it up. Hopefully Tex and A-Rod can do something against this bum. Andy deserves this win!

  104. SouthernYankeeFan says:

tex is having a rough night.

  105. Mike Pop says:

    Come on Alex.

  106. A-Rod’s pitch recognition skills in the last week or so haave been very meh.

  107. Dela G says:

wow gavin floyd looks like roger clemens out there

    jeez

  108. Salty Buggah says:

well at least we tied it up…A-rod in a mini-slump. Hope he breaks out soon.

  109. Brazilian Yankee says:

1 for 7 with RISP. We’ve had our chances.

  110. Ivan says:

Well at least Andy is pitching well.

  111. I’m loving all these strikeouts from Pettitte.

  112. Mike Pop says:

Come on Yanks, score for Andy!

  113. Johan Iz My Brohan says:

  115. Mike Pop says:

So what big trade DOES go down by the deadline tomorrow?

  116. Mike Pop says:

    Bad Swisher.

  117. Dela G says:

my god, floyd looks crazy good

  118. Fuckin’ a, Swish. Not his night.

  119. Ivan says:

I don’t know if it’s Flyod or the Yankees making him look good.

  120. Johan Iz My Brohan says:

I know there isn’t much detail behind the Ortiz/Manny thing, but it really seems to me like all the Sox fans are in denial and are 100% positive they did nothing. Keep Dreamin bloodsox.

    • Pasqua says:

The New York Times conspiracy theory is my absolute favorite, if only that it reveals two things about the fanbase:

      1) They can’t recognize that, even though “New York” appears in its title, the newspaper is not actually a local tabloid.
      2) They don’t even KNOW that this supposed Boston Red Sox-hating newspaper OWNS a piece of the Boston Red Sox!

  121. SouthernYankeeFan says:

    that is frustrating

  122. Jake H says:

Yanks making Floyd look like an ace.

    • whozat says:

He does have good stuff. He was pretty highly regarded. Would it be surprising that he’d flash brilliance?

Also this is a super pitcher-friendly ump. It’s been a wide zone all night. Andy’s got 8K’s too.

  123. SouthernYankeeFan says:

89 pitches through 7 with 8 strike outs. Ouch.

  124. Dela G says:

i predict the yankees score 2 runs in the 7th inning

  125. Dela G says:

    damn pettite

    you gotta get that shit

  126. Andy did like..454 things wrong on that play.

  127. Johan Iz My Brohan says:

    That error hurts.

  128. handtius says:

    a————————-rod.

  129. BigBlueAL says:

  134. Johan Iz My Brohan says:

Oh boy, this doesn’t look good.

  135. SouthernYankeeFan says:

    Fuck

  136. Johan Iz My Brohan says:

ARod, Ortiz is calling, he wants you to give his roids back!

  137. Brazilian Yankee says:

Players’ heads not in this game.

  138. Jackson says:

Well that was a pretty quick hook right there.

    • whozat says:

Last time he let andy talk his way into staying in the game, and look what happened then. I don’t really have a problem with this…keep this shit right here.

  139. BigBlueAL says:

It sounded like Santana said Hey ZZ instead of Hey CC in that Subway commercial. OK I know its racist but Im hispanic and have many family members whose accents are bad like that so Im allowed to make fun of Santana’s pronunciation!!

  140. Ivan says:

Yanks should be out of this inning.

  141. Pettitte pulled the half-O’Neill.

  142. Reggie C. says:

    Why not Robertson ??

Robertson has got to see higher leverage situations..

  143. Drew says:

AP’s G Moment was pretty funny.

  144. Salty Buggah says:

they changed the error to an infield single

  145. Ivan says:

    Lets go Hughes.

  146. Ivan says:

    Fuck Man.

  147. V says:

  154. DGeezy says:

great we’re playing mets-esque defensive meltdowns

  155. Ivan says:

I hate this inning. I really fucking do.

  156. Yankee1010 says:

Yeesh. Does it say Chico’s Bail Bonds on the uniforms?

  157. Lanny says:

    Great job Cano.

  158. Reggie C. says:

That might be the WORST throw i’ve ever seen from a 2B making a relay throw.

  159. Jake H says:

That wasn’t dirty but it was pretty questionable.

  160. gxpanos says:

So lame. If they lose this game 2-1, it’ll be so friggin’ annoying.
