• Charlie

i already can see what’s gonna happen here. mitre doesn’t last past the fourth inning, robertson pitches 1, then aceves pitches a few innings and lots of pitches. the yankees declare aceves the 5th starter cause he’s more “stretched out” than hughes. aceves holds down the fort and does an okay job, while hughes continues to be partially wasted in the pen.

    • Mike bk

that’s if the sore shoulder is good enough for him to even go a couple innings.

Kay: “That’s disgraceful up there in Pittsburgh. They traded away everybody that those fans care about.”

Pssst… nobody cared about any of those guys, Michael. None of them were impact players.

    • ChrisS

McClouth kinda was, I think a lot of fans expected him to stick around for a while.

      • http://twitter.com/tsjc68 tommiesmithjohncarlos a/k/a Ridiculous Upside

In a year or two, the fans will be happy they have Gorkys, Morton, and Locke and McLouth will be a distant memory.

          And Pedro Alavarez.

        • http://www.riveraveblues.com Mike Axisa

And, amazingly, the Pirates are winning tonight while the players Huntington brought in are doing all the heavy lifting.

    • Accent Shallow

All this hand-wringing over the breakup of a horseshit team — so silly. I’m sure the fans looked forward to the Pirates going 67-95.

They should have blown it all up years ago.

    • http://www.theyankeeuniverse.com/ The Artist

…and Pittsburgh has been a Football town since the 1970’s.

    • Charlie

its not disgraceful. their team sucks and they should have a fire sale. that’s what you do when you have a losing team thats sucked for 15 years thats not going anywhere. you trade away who you can, and you rebuild

      • http://twitter.com/tsjc68 tommiesmithjohncarlos a/k/a Ridiculous Upside

        Exactly.

The Huntington administration has done a pretty damn good job of dumping useless and expensive parts and has restocked the farm. They’re much closer to being a good team than they ever were under Bonifay or Littlefield.

    • Yankee1010

I posted that in the last thread. I must have missed the season where they were contenders. Or even over .500. I guess it’s better to keep those guys, overpay them, and still finish below .500. That way, idiot fans and mediots think they’re doing the right thing. It amazes me how many people in baseball are beyond stupid. They are Rah-tards.

  • ChrisS

Okay, here comes the first rate offense.

Calm down. Joba’s not reaching his limit in two weeks.

      • Mike bk

actually if the limit is 150 he would have to stop starting around 130 which is 3-4 starts.

    • Tony

      I’m thinking Brackman and Hairston.

      • http://twitter.com/tsjc68 tommiesmithjohncarlos a/k/a Ridiculous Upside

        Heh.

In all seriousness, the 4th starter will either be someone we pick up in the next month, like Bannister, Duchscherer, or the like, or Phil Hughes, when the team decides to flip-flop Joba with him.

    • Charlie

thats fucking retarded. igawa or towers will not sniff the majors this year. and the yankees are going to make the playoffs. Between Hughes/Aceves/someone we trade for/R. Sanchez/Nova, they’ll be able to piece together the 4&5 spots

    • Mike bk

he is one of the shitty pieces of their pen making an emergency start.

      • Salty Buggah

exactly, so there has to be more shitty pieces

    • Accent Shallow

I thought Carrasco was the shitty piece out of their pen?

  • Luis Polonia

Why is everybody acting as though the sky is falling (aside from a predisposition to freak out over every bad inning over the course of a 162 game season)?

I highly doubt that the front office viewed Mitre as a long-term solution, and I imagine that they didn’t have a plan that included him getting a postseason start.

They’ve had success “throwing shit and the wall and hoping it sticked (as Joe put it the other day recapping the ’05 deadline) and they were likely crossing their fingers and hoping Sergio could give them serviceable starts down the stretch but I don’t think they were necessarily counting him.

They gave him a shot, he failed. I’m sure Cash will work out something and we’ll try something else in August. That may be Phil Hughes, it may be a trade for a back-end guy, it may be Henry Rowengartner. We just don’t know at this point.

And also, they aren’t going to suddenly force Joba to throw 200 innings just because of a bad start by a crappy pitcher. My god, they have handled him with care for three seasons. They aren’t going to just abandon that now. Serenity now, folks.

    • ChrisS

thing is, two weeks ago they could have started stretching out Hughes. They didn’t because we had Sergio Mitre.

      • Mike bk

its over 4 weeks now cause wang was hurt before the ASG (7/4) was his last start i believe.

      • Luis Polonia

Very true, but I think they were enjoying their brand new toy in the bullpen a bit too much. I guess you could call it learning the hard way as Mitre gives up a gopher ball to Quentin.

    • Salty Buggah

No point man. The sane ones understand that already but the irrational ones will not no matter what.

  • Ivan

Sergio Mitre sucks but unfortunately the yanks like mediocre SP, whether it’s Mitre, the 2009 version of Wang, heck even Aceves isn’t better than Hughes.

Please Yankees, Put Hughes in the rotation please. PLEASE!!!

    • Mike bk

what happened to all the people arguing, “you cant mess with the pen because he impacts more games there” to now omg he has to save the 5 spot?

I’ve been beating this drum for a month now – Mitre is awful. He doesn’t belong in MLB.

    • Charlie

bannister isn’t all that great, albeit better than mitre. we also don’t have any idea what the asking price for him was, or if the royals were that interested in trading him

    • http://twitter.com/tsjc68 tommiesmithjohncarlos a/k/a Ridiculous Upside

Were people saying Bannister wouldn’t be better than Mitre, or that Bannister wouldn’t be enough of an upgrade over Mitre to be worth giving up prospects for?

      There’s a difference.

      • DSFC

I’m not going to go sifting through dozens of threads, but I know at least a few people told me he was no better than Mitre.

And no, we don’t know what the Royals wanted in return, but I really doubt it was a legit prospect. Who can’t rip off Dayton? Supposedly the snag was that the Yankees insisted that KC pick up some of his salary. If that’s true, that really angers me.

  • Ian

Mitre better not make another start after this. We was “meh” his first start, weak last time, and disgraceful tonight. If Joba passes the innings limit and the Yanks stick to it, I really wonder what the team plans for the backend of the rotation. Pettitte struggles every other start, and Mitre really isn’t an option for the rest of the season, in my opinion. They’re not taking Hughes out of the pen, and replacing Aceves in the bullpen would be difficult.

  • Johan Iz My Brohan

Buckle up guys, this inning is going to be a rough ride.

    • charlespoet

Kei Igawa is… ok just kidding.

    • Brazilian Yankee

While I do agree that Arroyo sucks, he’s not worst than Mitre.

      • Sweet Dick Willie

When you consider their respective salaries, Mitre is the lesser of the two evils.

        • http://twitter.com/tsjc68 tommiesmithjohncarlos a/k/a Ridiculous Upside

Yeah. One of the (many) reasons I’m against Arroyo is that he’d be on our books for next year as well.

    • Yankee1010

It’s not that he’s not better than Mitre, it’s that he’s owed the GDP of a 3rd world country. And you’ll be pretty pissed if that contractual obligation prevents the Yankees, you know, from getting someone actually worth that money.

      • Tony

They have 50 million dollars coming off the payroll this offseason.

        • Sweet Dick Willie

So you want to allocate $17 million of it to Arroyo?

I’m sure glad our GM has more sense than to do that.

          • http://www.riveraveblues.com Mike Axisa

            $17M = $23.8M

            Luxury tax is a bitch.

    • Jose

If by “no better than Mitre” means Arroyo has a lower ERA, fewer H/9, lower WHIP, and higher SO/9 then you are correct.

      • Sweet Dick Willie

Again, it’s not that Arroyo isn’t (marginally) better than Mitre, but his contract makes him (much) less desirable.

  • Dela G

my god this has to be his worst start. How the hell was he able to do so much better in YSIII?

    • Mike bk

cause at least then he got ground balls.

      • Tony

Hughes needs to be stretched out. Maybe they’re doing it now clandestinely, but I doubt it.

Who cares? Cash made a mistake by not trading a potential stud hitting catcher for a soon to be 35-year old pitcher who racked up good numbers in a pitchers park with a surreal defense.

      Apparently yes.

    • http://www.riveraveblues.com Mike Axisa

      Yes.

  • Yankee1010

Too many people are getting worked up about not getting a new starter. Do they really wish that Cashman gave up Jackson or Montero for 2 months of Washburn? If they do, you know that they forgot to wear their helmets today.

Yeah, Mitre sucks, but I’m pretty sure they realize this now. They were likely trying to catch lightning in a bottle, Aaron Small and Shawn Chacon style. Nothing wrong with that. They might stretch Hughes out now.

The Yanks are 2 games up in the loaded AL East. Yeah, it’s not ideal to have Mitre as the #5. Or to have a pending situation with Joba facing an innings limit. But Cashman is a smart dude. He got a guy like Hinske for less than nothing. Casey Erickson and Eric Fryer wouldn’t sniff Yankee pinstripes. And he got the Pirates to pay half of Hinske’s remaining salary. Yeah, Washburn would have been nice as insurance and an innings eater, but not for Montero or Jackson.

The Yanks will be just fine.

P.S. Don’t misunderstand – Mitre does in fact suck.

    • http://twitter.com/tsjc68 tommiesmithjohncarlos a/k/a Ridiculous Upside

      Exactly.

Yes, I don’t like Sergio Mitre. Yes, I want an upgrade.

No, I don’t want us to do something stupid like overpaying for Washburn or paying anything for Arroyo. There’s still plenty of time left, and we’re still the best team in baseball even with this impending issue to be resolved.

      • Tony

Bronson Arroyo is much, much, much, much, much, much, much better than Mitre. And Bronson Arroyo sucks. However, you don’t throw 200 innings by getting blown out of games in the 3rd.

To speak to the money or prospects is silly, as you don’t know what his asking price is or what Cincinnati would be willing to pick up. They also have 50 million dollars coming off next year’s payroll.

        • http://twitter.com/tsjc68 tommiesmithjohncarlos a/k/a Ridiculous Upside

To speak to the money or prospects is silly, as you don’t know what his asking price is or what Cincinnati would be willing to pick up.

And neither do you. For all YOU know, the price is sizeable.

          • Tony

And for all YOU know it’s Shelley Duncan.

What I do know is that Arroyo is much better than Mitre and throws a lot of innings. All they need is someone who won’t get knocked out of games in the 4th innings.

            • http://twitter.com/tsjc68 tommiesmithjohncarlos a/k/a Ridiculous Upside

And for all you know the reason Cashman turned down that Duncan for Arroyo deal is because he fully intends to put Hughes in the rotation, or he’s already got the parameters of a Duchscherer deal in place, or any number of other reasons to pass on an Arroyo deal even if he was free.

Look, yes, Arroyo is an upgrade over Mitre. But as you said yourself, Arroyo is still wicked shitty.

I’m not EVER bending myself out of shape that we didn’t acquire a shitty pitcher, even if he presents a marginal upgrade. Particularly a shitty pitcher who’s wildly overpaid.

              • Tony

There is no such thing as a marginal upgrade over Sergio Mitre. I’m not asking for Halladay here.

                • http://twitter.com/tsjc68 tommiesmithjohncarlos a/k/a Ridiculous Upside

No, you’re asking for us to take on someone MORE EXPENSIVE than Halladay. Frankly, that’s crazier.

        • http://twitter.com/tsjc68 tommiesmithjohncarlos a/k/a Ridiculous Upside

They also have 50 million dollars coming off next year’s payroll.

And I’m sure they also have plans already of where to spend that money that doesn’t include Bronson Arroyo. That money may be earmarked for players they’re already targeting that don’t cost 11M for shitty pitching.

          • Tony

They would have to be bankrolling a dog fighting ring to spend 50 million dollars next year. It sure as hell wouldn’t be going to that terrible FA crop.

            • Accent Shallow

So because the money’s coming off the payroll, it should be spent on a lousy pitcher?

Not someone else? Or held on to for the time being?

              • http://twitter.com/tsjc68 tommiesmithjohncarlos a/k/a Ridiculous Upside

Exactly. Maybe Arroyo’s 11M prevents us from taking on a salary dump player at NEXT year’s trading deadline.

          • Yankee1010

Exactly. I tried telling him this earlier. 11 million for Arroyo is completely assinine. That is much better spent in so many other ways.

Why do people not see this?

          • Sweet Dick Willie

Actually, he’s due the balance of $9.5 mil for this year, $11 mil for next year, and a $2 mil buyout.

Then factor in the luxury tax.

So, Cashman would pass if Jocketty was willing to GIVE us Arroyo.

            • http://twitter.com/tsjc68 tommiesmithjohncarlos a/k/a Ridiculous Upside

I have never seen anyone as adamant about a desire to add a player who is both 1) really expensive and 2) really shitty — EVER.

I love the Yanks more than people could imagine. Everyone around me thinks that I have a completely unhealthy obsession. I don’t deny it. But holy sh*T. I can see the forest for the trees. How many people are on the ledge when they’re the best team in baseball? These people don’t remember the days of Mel Hall and Claudell Washington.

  • putt

well you can’t blame Jorge, he was trying to kill this one, too. Stupid Nix!

  • Pasqua

Here’s a thought, and feel free to correct it if I’m wrong:

I hear a lot of people (“analysts,” commenters, Cashman himself) saying not to be concerned that the Yanks didn’t make a pitching move before the deadline because the waiver wire dealing will be active this year. But my impression of waiver wire trades is that they are more likely to involve mediocre players who make way too much money (i.e. Bronson Arroyo). Reason being, teams won’t claim a guy that’s too expensive, or just not worth the money. This, then, makes me think that anything coming the Yanks way in August is going to be rather…blah.

Make me feel better about this, people!

    • http://www.riveraveblues.com Mike Axisa

Adam Dunn was a waiver trade last year. He’s good at baseball.

    • whozat

The notion is that, in this economic climate, guys who are decent and a bit pricey will still clear waivers. And that’s all the Yanks are going to go for, it’s not like they’re going to see Haren clear waivers and get him for ZMac and Nova.

    • V

The difference is, if Arroyo clears waivers (he will), maybe the Reds eat 90% of his salary just to clear 10% of it off the books.

I used Arroyo as an example, not because I want him, but because he’s expensive.

    • Luis Polonia

Back of the rotation guys are almost always mediocre pitchers. We’re not looking for a guy to give us a 3.00 ERA, just a guy who can eat innings and keep us in ball games every fifth day.

      • whozat

Yep. A guy that would maybe have given up the same number of runs as mitre today, but gone 6 or 7.

Or, who would go 5-6, but give up 3-4.

    • Pasqua

Right, so if the contract is steep enough, other teams will shy away from blocking the deal. Then that brings up the issue of the Yankee payroll, because it sure sounds like they were / are reluctant to add too much even at this stage of the season. If it’s really a factor then that also dampens my hopes for a solid acquisition.

  • Yankee1010

I can’t believe the overall negativity right now. Yeah, Mitre sucked. The 5th starter slot is a problem, especially if Joba isn’t going to be a starter the rest of the year and they’re not going to skip him enough to be a starter in the playoffs. But my God, this team is the best team in the majors, in 1st place in the stacked AL East. Settle. Down.

People are getting on Jorge for tonight. Jorge has been, oh, only one of the best all around catchers for the last 10 years. He’s a borderline Hall of Famer. But, by all means, judge him on 3 at-bats on July 31, 2009. It’s as if nobody remembers him being hurt last year and being subjected to sub replacement level production from catcher last year. I was hoping that the silver lining from that injury last year would be that people would finally appreciate Jorge. Apparently not.
