Game 79: Starting a new streak

By Mike Axisa

Yesterday’s game was just one of those losses. The team didn’t beat themselves with errors or boneheaded plays, their ace just didn’t have it. It happens. Thankfully, the Yanks are sending a molten hot AJ Burnett out to the mound today to stop the bleeding. Over his last eight starts (48.2 IP) he’s struck out 56 and held opponents to a .222-.336-.356 line, translating to a 2.59 ERA. And that includes his 2.2 IP, 5 ER disaster in Fenway. Yeah, he’s been crazy good.

On the mound for the Blue Jays is lefty Brian Tallet, who held the Yanks to just two runs over six innings back on May 14th. He’s been solid but not spectacular for a Toronto team dealing with more pitching injuries than any team should. Hopefully the Yanks pull this one out, because Doc’s waiting on Saturday.

Here’s the starting nine:

Jeter, SS
Damon, LF
Teixeira, 1B
A-Rod, 3B
Cano, 2B
Swisher, RF
Matsui, DH
Cervelli, C – Posada’s thumb is still bothering him
Gardner, CF

And on the mound, the lightning rod from Little Rock, AJ Burnett.

Jake H says:

Hopefully Tex can start to get going.

Accent Shallow says:

A bit of an odd lineup from the Jays, with Wells/Rios as the 6/7 hitters.

Hopefully they can hit Tallet hard, he’s not an extreme groundballer, and he doesn’t have great velocity.

whozat says:

Yeah. Big day from ARod and Tex would go a long way to making me feel better

Ellis says:

Fun fact: jeter is hitting .451 against lefties this year. Woah.

Accent Shallow says:

Jeter has some really interesting splits this year: OPSing >1.100 against lefties (yes, you read that correctly), and >.850 at home (.869 at YSIII, .789 on the road).

Most of the difference in home/away splits is due to slugging, (7 HR at YSIII, 2 on the road), but the platoon splits concern me a bit: he’s at .262/.337/.384 against RPH. Yikes.

Little Bill says:

Brian Tallet is going to get destroyed today.

jim p says:

Doc on Saturday? Isn’t it Wang’s turn also?

Accent Shallow says:

Yeah, we get Halladay/Wang later in the series. In ‘06-’08 that’d fill me with confidence that the Yankees at least have a chance, but now I’m pretty terrified.

jim p says:

I’m just depressed for Wang. I’m expecting CMW to be even a little more improved, but it looks like he gets a loss even if he allows 2 runs in 6 innings.

Maybe we can pull a Santana on Doc (said I in my dreams.)

Accent Shallow says:

He’s good, but he’s human.

Dela G says:

not against the yankees

So I went to the library to try to print tickets for tomorrow’s game.

Library’s closed today. $@#$@# holiday weekends!

Dela G says:

buy a printer like everyone else has :)

I have a printer. With no paper and no ink.

Printer at home?

Dela G says:

you don’t have a printer? :)

Fed-Ex Kinkos it is

Alas, there isn’t one around here!

Just bring your flash drive to the Stadium. I’m sure they’ll understand…

Dela G says:

yeah tell em your seats are in the legend seats

they’ll have to say yes

Dela G says:

Is anyone else sad that Wang has to face Halladay Tomorrow?

Man I expect halladay to strike out 9 and give up 1 run

Little Bill says:

Probably useless regardless of who pitches. That guy has just owned us and probably won’t give up more than 1 run.

Dela G says:

i wish the yankees had got him back in 2003 when he was going to be a free agent

At least the yankees got burnett, who would shut them down consistently

Accent Shallow says:

What? That’s wild. Maybe he’s not really 16?

zs190 says:

Doubt it. Jorge Arangure (ESPN’s IFA guy) mentioned on twitter the other day that Yankees have a previous MLB executive working in the front office so they almost never get one that has a fake age.

pat says:

whaaaat, thats crazy.

Dela G says:

holy crap! thats amazing

Holy fuck, dude is 16?!?!

I mean, if the dude is as good as he said to be, he shouldn’t have too much of a hard time.

Mike bk says:

he was called a montero bad with romine’s arm this morning. imagaine that.

Accent Shallow says:

Hyperbole reigns when talking about these kids, though. I suppose we’ll see.

He does NOT have Montero’s bat, though he does have a pretty good bat w/ plus power. That much is clear.

Mike bk says:

that puts him 1-2 years ahead of a normal schedule to be stateside.

Mike bk says:

one other IFA note:

“Another good news – Mark Newman said in an interview today that they have RHP Chris Cabrera as more advanced than Arodys Vizcaino and Jairo Heredia of years past.”

That would also be something special.

Question:
If Sanchez is coming over now, what do they do with Murphy when and if he signs?

zs190 says:

He’s pretty good but I hear he lacks projection, he’s a little shorter than a lot of the guys. He’s already 90-91 and can touch 94, flashing 2 average off speed pitches, very polished for his age, though not necessarily as much upside as the other guys.

Accent Shallow says:

Very good to hear, but aren’t they going to talk these players up a little right now?

Accent Shallow says:

Marco Scutaro looks like Mike Myers in his Gameday picture (not Michael Myers, which would be far more interesting)

Ivan says:

Ok guys, u think Montero is gonna hit another Homerun today?

Dela G says:

and On the fifth day, Jesus Rested

yankeefan91 Arod fan says:

wasnt it on the 7th lol

Dela G says:

yeah, but Jesus has hit a homerun in 4 consecutive games, so this is the 5th day :P

Ivan says:

I think he hits another one. The Sat, the streak ends.

Dorian says:

Oh God. Robby Cano and his Top 5 2B OPS, Hits, Slugging, and Batting Average are batting 5th again.

Dela G says:

OH NO, JESUS SAVE US!

Red hats again? Sigh.

yankeefan91 Arod fan says:

probably gives us luck we did win when we wore em against texas.

Dela G says:

yeah we murdered texas with those hats

i was at that game, it was awesome . I am pretty sure alex went 5-5 in that game

Ivan says:

Weren’t they suppose to be blue, with the American flag covering the insignia.

Accent Shallow says:

These godawful red hats again. Maybe Hughes should have started this game.

I think the hats last year were much more awesome.

Dela G says:

yeah but they looked like regular blue hats. These ones are at least red

Accent Shallow says:

Disagree. I hated the hats last year, they’re even worse this year. I can’t enjoy messing with the Yankees’ uniform.

Bruno says:

So Jorge is mos def our DH next year huh?

Accent Shallow says:

No. I’m sure he gets some time at DH, but who’s the primary catcher otherwise? Cervelli’s been better than expected, but he’s not a realistic option. Neither is Montero at this point.

yankeefan91 Arod fan says:

Accent Shallow says:

Thanks A.J. No need to walk Scutaro.

Dela G says:

and AJ starts em with tha KAY!

yankeegirl49 says:

I cannot stomach the red hats..Im gonna be sick.

dkidd says:

aj pitching with a purpose today

i like it

Dear Kay: this season Canó has not been better than Hill or Kinsler.

Accent Shallow says:

I dunno, it’s been damn close. Robbie’s weakness is drawing walks, and hence having a solid OBP, but those guys have both provided similar OBPs to Robbie with similar slugging.

Although I’m sure they’re hitting with runners on base.

Accent Shallow says:

To elaborate:

Hill: .301/.341/.504
Kinsler: .263/.339/.513
Cano: .307/.340/.489

They’ve both been better than Cano with the bat, but it’s close enough that defense could put them even.

Ivan says:

Isin’t Kinsler splits Home/Road quite Stark?

Dorian says:

He ain’t far off

Hill has been eh since the end of May.

pat says:

Hill’s stance looks like a righty brett gardner.

Longo says:

that is an absolutely disgusting pitch

Accent Shallow says:

0-2 and then 4 straight balls? Ugh.

Dela G says:

well at least we didn’t let hill hurt us with the bat

yankeefan91 Arod fan says:

burnett trowin hard.

dkidd says:

gaston is a hugely underrated manager

Accent Shallow says:

Wow, Lind was so late on that one. Jesus.

Dela G says:

i hope that fastball never leaves him while he’s here in nyc

let’s hope he’s like brett tomko at the age of 35/36 with the hard throwing fastball

Accent Shallow says:

Except Tomko throws 94 and is eminently hittable. No thanks.

Dela G says:

true, but i mean the velocity

the movement is a different story

Dela G says:

boy when rolen hit that, i thought it was a homerun…

yankeefan91 Arod fan says:

Who’s Gonna trow the first no hitter in yankee stadium?

ill say burnett

Accent Shallow says:

No point in trying to guess, it’ll probably be someone we’d never think of.

I’ll throw out Neftali Feliz. Wild card.

dkidd says:

sweet stache, tallet

yankeefan91 Arod fan says:

i just notcie that those fake umpires are at the game they were in toronto and in a game like 2 weeks ago in washinton.

Charlie says:

phew, the no no is still intact

Those fake umpires need to be beaten about the head and neck with a rubber hose. It was cute at first, but now it’s just retarded.

Accent Shallow says:

What are you doing tomorrow? I’m always up for some vigilantism.

Dela G says:

by the way guys, the phillies broadcast last weekend said that the YES NETWORK paid for those umpire guys to be at the stadium…

Charlie says:
Dela G says:

they are basically the same pitcher

Accent Shallow says:

I’m going to disagree. Beckett has better control/command (career 2.8 BB/9, as opposed to Burnett’s 3.8 BB/9), and while they have similar career rates of hits yielded, HRs, and Ks, that 1.0 BB/9 is a pretty significant difference. Not to mention Burnett has never hard a year as good as Beckett’s 2007, or as good rate-wise as Beckett’s 2003.

Additionally, per pitch types, Burnett is a more groundball oriented pitcher (45-50%), and Beckett has more separation in speed between his fastball/curve than Burnett. (Beckett’s fastball is faster, and his curve is 4 mph slower)

Dela G says:

well i was saying in the terms of how they can both be dominant at times and then have huge stinkers.

But they are both power pitchers who will pound you with the fastball until you are blue in the face.

Accent Shallow says:

Two solidly struck balls right at fielders. Ergh.

Little Bill says:

They’re not Robbie Cano so they won’t get criticized for hitting the ball hard right at a fielder. I don’t understand the hate for Cano in the 5th spot, especially with Posada not playing. The argument is “Well he doesn’t protect A-Rod.” Who does? Are teams all of a sudden going to start pitching to A-Rod with a base open late in the game if they see Posada in the on deck circle? That’s ridiculous.

Accent Shallow says:

I love Robbie, but he’s been horseshit this year with men on. Whether that’s a repeatable skill, or indicative of him getting himself out, I have no idea. But the splits are pretty stark:

Overall: .307/.340/.489 (damn good for a 2B, no? Additionally, he’s got a significant reverse platoon split. Gotta love it. As I type this, he jacks one out off a lefty)
RISP: .213/.248/.340 (Yikes)
Men on: .259/.294/.427

Again, not sure how indicative that is of future performance, but Robbie’s been much worse with runners in RISP for his career.

Ivan says:

Man what a bunch losers.

Mike bk says:

oh i agree that is too much hype but not nearly what sano is getting. i do think it is a great sign of what the yanks really think they see in him that they think he can play gcl at 16.

Man, that pitching matchup for tomorrow looks ugly…

Yay for choosing my games well!

yankeefan91 Arod fan says:

heres a pic of those two at the nationals game the follow the blue jays around.

http://www.blogcdn.com/mlb.fan.....062009.jpg

e mills says:

watch Wang shut down the Blue Jays tomorrow b/c everyone is talking ish about him ;)

Dela G says:

if he does, i’ll drink a whole case of beer

Dela G says:

HAHAHA HE THOUGHT HE GOT HIT and tried to walk away…

Charlie says:

Dela G says:

nice hitting there by wells

let’s hope he then goes 0-8/9 for the rest of the series

Charlie says:

oh FUCK. there goes the no hittaaaa

whozat says:

I hate when there’s a hitter who’s struggling and Burnett starts out by trying to pick off the outside corner.

Dela G says:

damn 97mph there

yankeefan91 Arod fan says:

dats a damm strike

Salty Buggah says:

I just woke up and am thinking about another hour or 2 of sleep. Cmon Yanks please wake me up by scoring a couple of runs

Dela G says:

wow burnett you have to control that curveball

whozat says:

That was the heater.

Dela G says:

oh my bad, it looked like a curve, i should’ve seen the speed of it

whozat says:

yeah, it did look like it dove down and it. It certainly wound up down and in :-)

whozat says:

for chrissake.

Charlie says:

Charlie says:

effectively wild

whozat says:

eh

wild and getting by is more like it. He’s still thrown a lot of pitches, and he’s not doing so hot at putting hitters away.

Cano can’t bat fifth.

yankeefan91 Arod fan says:

canoooooooo wow that was crushed.

Dela G says:

ROBBIE CANO! DON’T YA KNOW!

HE’S NOT A NUMBAH 5 HITTAH!!

The Fallen Phoenix says:

Lazy Dominican. Doesn’t wait until men are on base.

Doesn’t Robbie always kill the league in July?

I’m not surprised.

Dela G says:

july and august are his months

Salty Buggah says:

.349 in July before the game today

Little Bill says:

GET CANO OUT OF THAT 5TH SPOT! YET ANOTHER WORTHLESS HIT WITH NO RUNNERS ON BASE!

whozat says:

He should’ve popped out so that he could accelerate the process of getting back around the order so he could come to the plate with a man on 2nd and try to poke a single through the right side.

Charlie says:

Robbie absolutely abuses bad pitchers. Lets crush em today please

Salty Buggah says:

finally RBI time for Robbie!!!!!!!!!!!!

Accent Shallow says:

If I were Scott Rolen, my at-bat music would be “Ridin’ Dirty”.

“They see me Rolen . . .”

Dela G says:

haha nice.

as a guy who has lived in htown the past 10 years, i support you using htown artists

whozat says:

Htown?

…Hicago? Hotlanta? Hackensack?

Dela G says:

houston, texas

dkidd says:

i’m going to try and remember that home run the next time cano makes an out on the first pitch

Dela G says:

nice job godzilla!

yankeefan91 Arod fan says:

Matsui has great numbers against tallet.

Accent Shallow says:

Matsui is a professional hitter. Hopefully they can get him a ring this year.

whozat says:

I’d love it.

whozat says:

That was like…slow motion. I feel like, if I tried to swing like that the bat would get knocked out of my hands.

Dela G says:

JESUS MONTERO GETS A SHOUT OUT!

Come on Coney, give Montero some love!!!

Ahh there it is!

The Fallen Phoenix says:

David Cone knows Yankee prospects. Montero reference!

Dela G says:

kay just talked about his 4 HRs in 4 days!

Dela G says:

sanchez gettin some love too!

dkidd says:

good young talent showing its head

only cone could make that sound so dirty

The Fallen Phoenix says:

“Jerking him off in the bullpen…”

whozat says:

Pitchers hate dryhumps.

Also, look at Hughes dropping a deuce on him. Nice.

I just can’t WAIT for Romulo or Humberto to show up in September and hear what Cone does with that.

Accent Shallow says:

Hughes’ deucing was from Kay, actually.

Cone does seem to work sexual references into all the broadcasts. It practically has to be intentional, but I find him to be a very knowledgeable and enjoyable broadcaster.

Salty Buggah says:

a Cervi HR would be so nice today

Charlie says:

Stop bunting!!!!! Why the fuck would you bunt there????????/ FFFFFFFFFFUUUCCCKKKKKKKK SMALL BALL11!!!!!!111!!!

whozat says:

He’s the backup catcher. It’s not like he’s a good hitter. He could have been going on his own, or maybe Joe thought he could catch Rolen sleeping. Cervelli has good speed for a catcher, which Rolen might not know.

Charlie says:

decent points, but i just hate bunting in all forms.

Manimal says:

They HAD to mention Montero after his recent streak

I’m impressed Kay knows who he is.

Jake H says:

Love how much info the broadcasters know about the Yankee minor league teams.

Salty Buggah says:

WTF? My computer keeps blocking this site saying, Malware detected and this message:

“The website at riveraveblues.com contains elements from the site cdn1.eyewonder.com, which appears to host malware – software that can hurt your computer or otherwise operate without your consent. Just visiting a site that contains malware can infect your computer.”

Anyone know what’s up?

whozat says:

Probably that eyewonder.com is some ad site that either got tricked into hosting (or knowingly hosted) some malware recently, and their ads are getting served to RAB as a part of whatever ad network they partner with.

Salty Buggah says:

Should I let Mike, Ben, or Joe know about this?

radnom says:

Probably.

It seems to be a digital advertising company, but my browser won’t even let me go to their site without bypassing a malware warning.

Accent Shallow says:

I know Gardner has two out of the park homers, but I almost think he should be fined for all flyballs.

(Kidding, but his best weapon is obviously his speed, which isn’t going to help on flyballs, unless someone *coughDenardSpancough* misplays them into inside the parkers)

The Fallen Phoenix says:

Man, Burnett has already made this a 6 inning game. Now, if only we had six shut-down relievers to shorten this game to 0 innings…

whozat says:

Burnett having some trouble putting guys away.

Salty Buggah says:

damnit scutaro, stop fouling them off and wasting his pitches…just K

whozat says:
whozat says:

I am rapidly losing my willingness to sign Damon to a 1+1 deal this offseason.

Accent Shallow says:

Seriously. So much of his value is based on him playing an above average LF. If he’s below average, then why not get someone with a better/more consistent bat?

yankeefan91 Arod fan says:

The Fallen Phoenix says:

And…that’s a ball that ought to be caught. That’ll bring down the UZR.

pat says:

hahaha damn Johnny wtf

V says:

Johnny Damon is playing himself out of a 1 year contract offer after the season.

whozat says:

seriously. Wasted 8 pitches, and put a guy on 2nd. Thanks Johnny!

Salty Buggah says:

Steve O. says:

Leadoff doubles grinds my gears.

whozat says:

Leadoff doubles two-base errors that aren’t scored as such because the fielder screwed up so badly that he didn’t even touch the ball grinds my gears.

FTFY

Steve O. says:

whozat says:

So if AJ gets out of this without giving up a run, he’s still probably at 60 pitches, right?

CP3 says:

Hey I was wondering what player could best compare to what gary sanchez might be?

whozat says:

He’s 16. Don’t worry about it until he’s in the states, so much can change between now and then that it’s pointless to really think about it.

donttradecano says:

why are those two umps here?

whozat says:

The guys in the stands? They’re Jays fans that seem to follow them around and do that umping gag.

They’re committed to the bit, I’ll give them that.

Accent Shallow says:

Damon suddenly decides it’s no longer Free Doubles Day?

whozat says:

Maybe it’s that calf issue, but I think it happened before that…Johnny’s D has really fallen off a cliff.

Jamal G. says:

Nice job by A.J. to pick up Johnny D.

Salty Buggah says:

phew, no runs. I guess I can live with a high pitchcount if there are no runs.

pat says:

he really only threw 1 extra pitch that inning.

Shdwrptr says:

True, if you assume that everything would have gone the same. Thank Rolen for swinging at pitch #1.

The Fallen Phoenix says:

AJ Burnett just keeps shortening that game.

Jake H says:

Mike, do you think that Gary S is goin to start in GCL this year or will they just get him a little game action here or there?

whozat says:

He is 16. He’ll be playing in the dominican summer leagues for a couple seasons as least.

Accent Shallow says:

Like someone mentioned earlier in the broadcast: Tallet wouldn’t look out of place in 1974.

Accent Shallow says:

Gameday is not loving that call.

Dela G says:

that strikeout call was bs

Steve O. says:

Let’s not get irrational here, yes Damon hasn’t been himself in the field, and yes he’s been atrociously bad in the field at times, but Damon on a 1 year deal with an option >>> Jason Bay or Matt Holliday on whatever they will demand.

But I’d think Bay >>>>> Holliday. Due to contract, of course.

whozat says:

That’s a false dichotomy. There will be other options, perhaps not in free agency, but in trade.

Salty Buggah says:

WHoa, in no way was that strike 3!!!

Shdwrptr says:

What was that? Burnett has not gotten a few called strikes IN THE ZONE and Tallet gets that call?

Salty Buggah says:

Tex should go lefty against tallet. Lefty are hitting better against him.

For lack of a more creative name.. Alex says:

meh but he never hits lefty on lefty or righty on righty, probably would be uncomfortable.

Dela G says:

wow 2 straight balls called for strike 3

BS

Salty Buggah says:

that was borderline but mostly inside…damon’s was in another universe. Damn you Hirschbeck!!!!!!!!

Dela G says:

aight cano make em pay!

Shdwrptr says:

Whoa!!!! That was not ball 4 for Arod if that called strike 3 was a strike for Damon…

Salty Buggah says:

oh another walk to pass the baton…though this one moves Jete up to scoring position

Manimal says:

That was kind of funny haha

Dela G says:

nice job by hill there, i thought it would go through his legs

Accent Shallow says:

Solidly struck, but right at Hill. Ugh.

Dorian says:

Cano is so unclutch. That HR meant absoluetly nothing.

FACE-PALM

Slugger27 says:

anyone know the all star results? did tex overtake youk?

Dela G says:

we’ll find out on sunday

donttradecano says:

So the yanks gave those umps free seats… why not give two fans free seats instead? or members of the military.

Dela G says:

a lot of teams have started to pay for these guys to show up.

The nats did it, and the yanks have too.

For lack of a more creative name.. Alex says:

those umps annoy the hell outta me tho

BklynJT says:

They are funny as hell.

Reggie C. says:

are you serious??

they’re getting PAID to show up??

omg…

Accent Shallow says:

Agreed. Why encourage someone else’s gimmick?

Accent Shallow says:

yankeefan91 Arod fan says:

we need a k burneet

Dela G says:

well tie game…

V says:

They need to take all MLB umpires, and stick them on a bus to umpire Little League games. Fucking morons.

Accent Shallow says:

I wouldn’t mind Rios if the Jays are trying to dump salary. Wells though? No thanks.

Dela G says:

cmon burnett, keep it down

pat says:

Accent Shallow says:

Peace out Rios! Getting thrown out by 5 feet on a breaking ball? Wow.

Shdwrptr says:

Don’t you love it when pitchers decide it’s the best idea to ignore the hitter and attempt to keep the base runner on for basically no reason? Throw it there once or twice, throw strikes, and let your defense do the rest.

Dela G says:

wow i’m shocked the ump didn’t get that call this time…

Dela G says:

why matsui swung at ball 4 is beyond me

Aaron says:

Inconsistent strike zone… way too close to take..

Salty Buggah says:

it was borderline but mostly down so with this ump you never know what’s going to happen. AJ hasn’t gotten several calls low that were actually in the zone for strikes though.

Dela G says:

dkidd says:

less o’neill and flaherty, more cone and singleton please

Jake H says:

toronto announcer was a wussy.

Accent Shallow says:

Woo, sit down.

Accent Shallow says:

Nice call, Kay: “Somebody caught it . . .”

I thought that was gone off the bat. Bandbox?

Dela G says:

wow gardner is wicked fast ( i already knew this, but man he’s fast)

Ivan says:

Lets get some runs baby.

Salty Buggah says:

nice little 9 pitch inning

now cmon top of the order

pat says:

Haha coney is the man… “I can smell friday night comin boy”. Awesome.

DreDog says:

He’s not telling you who Friday Night is though.

dkidd says:

good at-bat by brett

Accent Shallow says:

Can’t walk Gardner, Tallet.

Salty Buggah says:

nice gardy walks

Salty Buggah says:

pat says:

Niice all thus pussyfooting around and jeter is 3-0

LiveFromNewYork says:

Would like Capn Giddyup to not giddyup so that’s good.

Salty Buggah says:

Gardner just drew 2 walks, though one was credited to Jeter

LiveFromNewYork says:

dkidd says:

lol tallet playing bocchi ball

Accent Shallow says:

And the drag bunt to load the bases! Now would be a nice time to remember you’re a power hitter, Tex.

Dela G says:

WHAT A GREAT BUNT BY DAMON!

There we go, damage time. Five runs or bust!

Shdwrptr says:

We need more than 1 run off of this…

For lack of a more creative name.. Alex says:

wow nice throw by Tallet.

Dela G says:

oh man damon was out…

LiveFromNewYork says:

If this season ends without Gritner stealing home I will be disappointed. Of course doing it in the World Series would be da bomb.

Salty Buggah says:

walk-off steal of home for a series sweep!!!! DREAM IT!

Dela G says:

did mariano blow the door open?

For lack of a more creative name.. Alex says:

lol 1.2 Bil dollars and we can’t keep a door closed

dkidd says:

they gave him an error? terrible call

It’s about time Wells earned his paycheck.

Accent Shallow says:

Accent Shallow says:

Sure, walk Tex to force in a run with A-Rod on deck. Anyone warming in Toronto’s pen?

Dela G says:

nice job walking in a run there tex

DreDog says:

4 straight balls wow. Cone is thinking something sexual to infer on that.

Tex passes the baton. What a bum.

dkidd says:
