Pete says:

Anyone else want that 5th spot? Cano doesn’t.

Little Bill says:

TRADE DAMON! DFA TEX! AND SHOOT CANO!

Bob Stone says:

I can’t wait for this Cano RISP slump to be finished

CP3 says:

cano is just being a good friend, he wants his bff cabrera to get the walkoff hit.

Lanny says:

Cano does it again.

Jose says:

We need Hinske to a have his Yankee moment in the bottom of the 10th.

Zach says:

damn. thats real vague though- was it at his home? club? back alley?

dygg says:

Salty Buggah says:

John Duci says:

ARX says:

…I’m hesitant to even react until I see it confirmed by a better source with more details…

Arman Tamzarian says:

Its weird that espn or SI hasn’t picked up on it yet.

Zach says:

a news station isnt a good source?

ARX says:

Not saying that, just that a local news blurb with 2 sentences and hardly any details isnt evry thorough. Plus it still hasnt been picked up by major news/sports outlets….so it lets me hang on to the faint hope that it isn’t true :( I watched him play his whole career and he was one of my favorite players, hope to god its just mistaken identity.

Zach says:

Nashville Police confirmed it

Mr.Jigginz says:

ESPN got it on their site now too…Damn.

Zach says:

ESPN said he was shot at his home

(Comments wont nest below this level)

Zach says:

Little Bill says:

There’s a link on that page to the live coverage. That channel is outside his house so this has got to be real.

Mr.Jigginz says:

If this is accurate, then I’m just shocked. He was one of my favorite players in the league, during his time.

Shdwrptr says:

I hate extra innings. I just want the Yankees to end this game with a walkoff. Is that too much to ask on the 4th of July?

Salty Buggah says:

one hit by cano in any AB today and we win.

Bob Stone says:

I’ve said it before and I will probably say it again. This Player of the Game decided in the 8th innning is just ridiculous. Just another way to get in another “during-the-live-action” commercial plug.

Ivan says:

While Cano has struggled in RISP, some of it has to do wit luck though

John Duci says:

How amazing would our team be if Wang was as good as he was in those 19 win seasons. Boy, we would be a tough team to beat.

Tom Zig says:

In due time…possibly next year…except we’ll have a better Joba and Hughes

Tom Zig says:

Quick! Let’s end this game before Tomko comes in!

Shdwrptr says:

Ok. Get overbay out and have Hinske hit his first Yankee Stadium HR FTW

MattG says:

I admire Girardi for not making knee-jerk moves based on SSS, but Cano hitting fifth was not wise to begin with. You do not want a lefty behind A-Rod–it makes the IBB too easy a call. Add to this the fact that Cano has one approach–swing at anything close–and you have a incredibly easy choice for a pitcher.

Put Swisher there, and give them something to think about.

Zach says:

What does a lefty behind ARod have to do with anything?

Arman Tamzarian says:
Zach says:

small sample size i believe

Arman Tamzarian says:

A.D. says:

small sample size

Arman Tamzarian says:

I’ve been seeing that lately, isn’t “small” redundant though?

Zach says:

no sample size doesnet autoamtically mean small. it could be a huge sample size. small is an adjective, sample size is the object

Arman Tamzarian says:

I stand corrected

(Comments wont nest below this level)

Arman Tamzarian says:

What the fuck was that?

(Comments wont nest below this level)

Little Bill says:

The IBB is an easy call anyway, unless you’re the Seattle Mariners. Posada being in the 5th spot isn’t going to scare people into pitching to A-Rod. Pitch to A-Rod or pitch to Posada. Hmmm, touch choice….

Bob Stone says:

For all those people debating this before . . . wouldn’t it be a plus to have Mariano in now for the 10th and maybe 11th after Phil Hughes pitched the ninth?

Well, yeah, but you can’t plan for a future that might never come.

I think he should have left Hughes in for another inning, but there’s never a bad time to go to Mo.

dygg says:

I agree. I think in today’s game, the argument is really more about Hughes than it is about Mo.

Bob Stone says:

Mo is always a good bet. The ERA suggests that he’s not quite as good a bet in ties. It doesn’t make any sense, but it’s true that his ERA is about 2.5 times higher in ties than in saves. And, I think, but I’m not sure, it’s a pretty good sample size. I would have left in Hughes for the 9th. Mo for the 10th and maybe 11th. That leaves you Coke for the 13th and 14th. Let’s see how it plays out.

charlespoet says:

How tough would this team be if they had a legit #5 RBI hitter?

MattG says:

They have 2. They’re just not using either one.

charlespoet says:

Posada – maybe. Who else?

A.D. says:

Ahhh BG 3rd best UZR/150 in CF this year.

For lack of a more creative name... Alex says:

feels good. Yanks haven’t had that in a while in CF.

Zach says:

still has a shitty arm

For lack of a more creative name... Alex says:

meh range >>>> arm and brett garnder’s arm > damon’s and bernie at the end of his career but yes it is pretty hard to watch him throw.

Ivan says:

Riddering says:

GARDNER.

Fastest Outfielder Alive.

Quikksand says:

Nice hustle, Brett!

Andy In Sunny Daytona says:

It’s hot today. Melk is a good choice.

Andy In Sunny Daytona says:

It’s hot today. Melk is a good choice.

Quikksand says:

Thank god. The new captain clutch!

Melky’s due up third. Just get someone on for him, he’ll do the rest.

Quikksand says:

Hip hip, Jorge! Posada to lead off the bottom of the 10th.

Salty Buggah says:

ESPN – Noting the new problems the New York Yankees have had filling the high-priced seats at their new ballpark, Tiger Woods is boosting golf’s efforts to attract young fans to go see the game in person at the tournament he’s hosting this weekend.

“We don’t want to have what happened at Yankee Stadium,” Woods said Friday at Congressional Country Club in Bethesda, Md., site of the AT&T National. “Tickets are so overpriced that you can’t bring the family. We want to have everyone come out and enjoy being in a family atmosphere, walk around, have a good time and not have it cost an arm and a leg.”

this ticket prices thing is kinda overblown by the media so everyone misubderstands it a bit.

Dorian says:

Posada guessing with 2 stikes highly upsets me.

Bob Stone says:

Gardner’s defense saved a couple of runs today.

Shdwrptr says:

Swisher!?!?!? Is Hinske dead or something?

Zach says:

why would you pick Hinske over Swisher?

Shdwrptr says:

Swisher has been god-awful lately. He’s hitting .236

Zach says:

and Hinske has 5 at bats since July 26. and you want him up in the bottom of the 10th? come on this isnt even a discussion

using batting average to judge Swisher is always dumb.

dygg says:

If only because he’s there. you need to get him some ABs.

Shdwrptr says:

Give him at bats when the game isn’t on the line

dygg says:

I thought the whole idea was to have a left-handed bat off the bench?

Zach says:

was swisher not batting left?

Bob Stone says:

Swish batted lefty

dygg says:

He was. Sorry. I was unclear. I only meant to say, Hinske was traded for explicitly for situations like this. If you’re not going to use him, then why trade for him?

Zach says:

He was traded for a bat off the bench, he wasnt traded to bat instead of Swisher

Shdwrptr says:

Girardi- “Power hitting pinch hitters usually come in when the team needs a run in the late innings…right?…Nah, lets put in Swisher. I know he’s been in a slump for a month but who knows :-)

Zach says:

.254 average, .382 obp, .894 OPS in June is not a slump

Bob Stone says:

Damn – No walk off for Melky today.

Quikksand says:

Since when did getting hits become so hard Yankees???????

zs190 says:

This guy Camp has some pretty nice control, seems like every ball on Gameday is right around the edge of the strike zone.

charlespoet says:

Aceves and who else is left in the pen? Have to think the odds for the Yankees winning drops now since Mo, Hughes, Bruney, are done.

e mills says:

Probably have to save Ace for Joba’s start

Aceves and Tomko are the only one’s left, and Aceves threw a ton what, three innings on Thursday?

Bob Stone says:

Hate to say I told you so (actually – no I don’t). Hughes 9th, Mo 10th & 11th, if necessary Coke 12th & 13th.

Zach says:

why not Hughes 8-9, Coke 10-11, Aceves 12-14 and Mo for the 15th??

dygg says:

you left out Tomko

Zach says:

saving him for the 16th, most important inning of the game

A.D. says:

with the recent workload Mo wasn’t going 2 innings today

ARX says:

As long as Coke gets past this inning, I still feel good with Aceves going into a possible 12th/13th. If we get past that…pray.

e mills says:

I don’t like leaving COke in here

Salty Buggah says:

8 pitches last inning

Zach says:

why? he threw 10 pitches and been lights out lately

e mills says:

just thinking about earlier in the season when he wasn’t really successful going more than an inning. So far so good though

Zach says:

he has 1 ER in his last 5 appearances of 1+ IP

A.D. says:

Coke >>>>>>>> Tomko

charlespoet says:

What the hell was that pitching sequence?

Salty Buggah says:

uh-oh cmon Cokey

Bob Stone says:

Bob Stone says:

Okay – Let’s win in the bottom of the 11th!!

zs190 says:

Hope so, this is probably it for Coke. I don’t want to see Tomko.

Bob Stone says:

I second that thought

Salty Buggah says:

nice Cokey, now let’s get him the win!

If only Gardy could somehow get on

Enough pussyfooting around, someone put one into the people and end this shit.

dygg says:

sounds good to me

Ivan says:

I wouldn’t mind 3 singles in a row

thurdonpaul says:

“put one into the people”
lol, i like that, i dont think i ever heard that before

Little Bill says:

Great job by Coke. We don’t have a 10th and 11th inning go so it’s surprising that he got through. God I hope we don’t go to the 12th because we have no 12th inning guy. It doesn’t matter who pitches that inning, he will fail because he doesn’t know how to pitch in the 12th inning.

Ivan says:

Coke has really been good as of late.

A.D. says:

Walk off inside the park?

e mills says:

Gardner needs to visit a hospital everyday

Bob Stone says:

Salty Buggah says:
Salty Buggah says:

charlespoet says:

cross your fingers for a win. Tomko has LOSS written all over it.

A.D. says:

Minca Kelly chilling with the Jeters

A.D. says:

Was just about to say. Poor Cap’n, having to keep a woman like that happy…

Bob Stone says:

Is that his main squeeze now? I don’t keep up with the gossip pages. Very nice for Cap’n if she is!

Riddering says:

I love how Kay and Coney subtly pay so much attention to the Jeter crew without mentioning the very attractive young woman on the right.

Dorian says:

Minka Kelly. Stellar

Tony says:

Minka Kelly > Kate Hudson

Soriano~40~40 says:

If we go to the 12th, who would be pitching?

dygg says:

Bob Stone says:

I hope it’s Aceves and not Tomko

Camp is destroying them with that changeup.

Bob Stone says:

Camp is looking more like Halladay than Halladay

Bob Stone says:

Damon just has to put one out – Get this over with

Bob Stone says:

Ivan says:

Who pitches the 12?

Riddering says:

C’mon, Yankees. My grill is waiting. I want a win.

Dela G says:

you should do what i am doing

grilling and watching the game :)

Riddering says:

I’m watching on my computer which, unfortunately, is too far from the grill.

One day, though, I will have a laptogrill and life will be awesome.

Soriano~40~40 says:

Dela G says:

man camp looked great

girardi may look foolish for pulling hughes early now that we rest on tomko…

Zach says:

yeah he should have planned for teh 12th inning better

Bob Stone says:

Don’t leave out the 13th-16th either

e mills says:

you love to criticize

Zach says:

because the criticism makes no sense. tied game top of the 9th at home, you put your closer in.

e mills says:

I think some people just like to make comments about how they feel in certain situation, myself included. BTW I appreciate you throwing me Coke’s recent #’s in 1+ IP

Zach says:

yeah and Girardi is in a lose-lose situation for EVERY situation because people are always going to bitch

and you’re welcome

Dela G says:

yeah but if a guy throws 8 pitches in an inning, leave em in for the next.

i am wishing tomko the best and hope he gets the win, but let mo pitch the extras (if needed). Give the guy the rest

Bob Stone says:

I remember a commenter mentioning that way back in the 8th inning – Cough, Cough

Dela G says:

i also mentioned this too :P

Ivan says:

I would go to Aceves for just 1 inning knowing I have the 3-4-5 hitters coming.

zs190 says:

He pitched like 3 innings and threw like 30-35 pitches 2 days ago, I think Joe would really prefer to not use him.

YankeeJosh says:

Rumor has it Eric Hinske is on this team. It cannot be confirmed at this time, however.

Zach says:

Who was he suppose to bat for, and hes had 6 at bats since June 26th

YankeeJosh says:

He should have batted for either Ransom or Gardner. Gardner’s been in a bad funk and Hinske has the pop to end the game.

At some point the Manager has to get him into a game to keep him fresh and a viable option.

Shdwrptr says:

This blows. They look great through the first 7 innings against Roy ^$^*%$#* Halladay and now they can’t even get a damn hit.

e mills says:

Is that his main squeeze now? I don’t keep up with the gossip pages. Very nice for Cap’n if she is!

here you go Bob:

http://www.terezowens.com/category/derek-jeter/

Bob Stone says:

Thanks e mills – I feel all brought up to date now. Derek sure does alright for himself in the dating department.

e mills says:

Salty Buggah says:

Tomko against Scutaro, Hill, Lind and then Rolen is not good but we may get lucky

Bob Stone says:

This is where it gets scary

Bob Stone says:

Tomko against anyone is scary

Ivan says:

James Auchincloss says:

There’s no getting lucky when Brett Tomko is involved

any thoughts on who will start in 5 days assuming Wang can’t?

Ivan says:

I ssume it’s Phil Hughes.

Riddering says:

How long has it been since Tomko got work?

Bob Stone says:
Dela G says:

man i just laughed loudly

Bob Stone says:

Riddering says:

Let’s hope he only has to appear for one inning.

And all you doubters were worried about Tomko. Pffft.

Shdwrptr says:

I almost had a heart attack

Salty Buggah says:

Yea, I saw that ball being caught and came right back out of the ER

Dela G says:

my heart stopped

Riddering says:

Today should be “outfielder appreciation” day.

Bob Stone says:

Definitely – Outfield defense is why we are still playing in extra innings.

TJ says:

Tomko can still throw, he should be pitching more, a good vet arm to have

Bob Stone says:

Well Tomko sure did make it scary but I give him credit – He came through

Salty Buggah says:

We got lucky, now we MUST win it in the bottom half I hope.

charlespoet says:

there is one bullet dodged with Tomko. Odds say end it now.

TJ says:

add Herges (just got DFAed by the Indians) and move Aceves to the starting spot

Come on. We have to win, we would be only one game back if we do.

Four fingers for A-Rod now. C’mon Cano.

Dela G says:

nice job TEX!

RISP for A-BOMB!

zs190 says:

Time for ARod to walk it off.

zs190 says:

Dang, I guess ARod won’t get a chance to hit with Cano struggling in RISP.

Bob Stone says:

That’ll show ‘em not to use the over shift – HAH

Bob C says:

if anything it shows them that the shift was the right play… Teix got lucky, not that im complaining

Jamal G. says:

Up to Robbie Cano again (post ARod IBB). Come on, you’re my favorite Yankee for a reason, dude.

Shdwrptr says:

They’re really pushing Camp

Salty Buggah says:

alright tex got it started

A.D. says:

e mills says:

For lack of a more creative name... Alex says:

That was Lou Gehrig’s patch on the top of 1st base which helped us rite there.

Shdwrptr says:

Sac bunt Cano. You have to

Zach says:

Can Cano hit into a triple play to end the inning?

ARX says:

For the love of all that is sacred and holy PLEASE GET A RBI HIT CANO!

First and second with no outs? Fuck it, let him bunt.

TJ says:

Cano is an out machine, let’s hope no DP

Andrew says:

Cano is really really really due!

Salty Buggah says:

Cano bunt? it’ll be 2nd and 3rd one out…

Dela G says:

well its your turn robbie

like bruce almighty says “Be the miracle”

DreDog says:

Cano should try to draw a walk.

Jamal G. says:

Hacerlo, Cano, hacerlo!

Bob Stone says:

Andrew says:

TJ says:

Yankee fans need to start the “rubber chicken” thing for AROD that SF used to use for Bonds

Salty Buggah says:

if cano was hitting with RISP, they wouldn’t walk him most of the time

Andrew says:

A.D. says:

I wouldn’t be opposed to a bunt in this situation

Ian says:

good move tryin’ to bunt Cano.. pitcher’s out of his rhythm

Jamal G. says:

OK, please take off the damn bunt now.

ARX says:

………..what the fuck.

Andrew says:

A.D. says:

Bob Stone says:

WTF was that??????????

For lack of a more creative name... Alex says:

e mills says:

what the FUCK was that?????

Andrew says:

THAT IS WHY YOU DON’T BUNT!!!

Ian says:

WTF!! BUNTING ON 3-0?

In the name of all that is holy, why Cano?

zs190 says:

Salty Buggah says:

WTF!!! he could have walked maybe

Riddering says:

Wow.

Um, Cano is really playing for his detractors today.

TJ says:

Bunt 3-0 was stupid, another great managerial move

whozat says:

Given that Tex was heading BACK to second, I think Cano fucked up.

Shdwrptr says:

3-0 bunt. WTF was that. Take 3 pitches in a row and go down looking if you have to

charlespoet says:

God this team plays some fucking stupid baseball at times. Bunt on 3-0. Just stupid

Soriano~40~40 says:

Correction.. cano plays some stupid ass baseball somtimes

Lanny says:

DreDog says:

Why not try to draw the walk?

A.D. says:

Not Canos best day

Zach says:

What the fuck is everyone complaining about?

That pitch was down the middle, if he takes it its 3-1 and he only has one chance to bunt

Drew says:

Yeah I can see both sides, but, Canobie may have missed a sign (or Teix) because teix woulda ran.

whozat says:

Are you serious?

Bunting was stupid in the first place.

Now, I betcha no one really talks about it.

Lanny says:

You don’t bunt 3-0 when the pitcher cant find the zone. You force him to throw a strike. Think a little.

Zach says:

the pitch was DOWN THE MIDDLE

Dela G says:

CANO! YOU SIMPLETON!

DreDog says:

At least Camp is pithcing a lot.

ledavidisrael says:

3-0 BUNT WTF AFSJFDADJ!@!@!!

TJ says:

Deal Cano and let Pena play second

Zach says:

cut ARod, cut matsui, cut Burnett after his poor start, cut Tex after his slump, cut Swish

Arman Tamzarian says:

I didn’t think he could fuck up any worse than not getting a hit, but he did

whozat says:

Andrew says:

bunting is stupid as a whole. nevermind on 3-0

ARX says:

Thank you Posada. Thank you.

A.D. says:

Doesn’t matter, boom

Dela G says:

BALL GAME OVER!!

YANKEES WIN!

Bob Stone says:

DreDog says:

BLAMMMMMOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO

Dela G says:

Everybody go get yo grill on!

Andrew says:

Bob C says:

AJ please pie posada :)

Lanny says:

Bunting Cano in the first place was simply wrong.

Zach says:

because you use the logic that he’s “due” for a hit after 0-19 with RISP?

whozat says:

No, because he’s shitty at bunting. Bunting on a pitch when Tex didn’t know it was happening was even worse.

Zach says:

Tex didnt know- thats Cano’s fault?

Riddering says:

JORGIE.

Cano’s gotta pee on his hands for the rest of the season now.

Bob Stone says:

Ivan says:

Salty Buggah says:

POSADA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Bail em out baby! He should be batting 5th and he is pretty clutch usually.

Bob C says:

Posada’s going to kill Joba and AJ in the clubhouse.

Zach says:

NO LAUGHING ON THE FIELD!!!

Salty Buggah says:

does he get pied by AJ?

Bob Stone says:

DreDog says:

Seriously, who is in the ‘pen besides Ace tomorrow?

Robertson, Bruney.

zs190 says:

Robertson for sure, Tomko, you rest Mo tomorrow and use Hughes to close if needed.

zs190 says:

Actually, maybe not. I forgot we lost that game to the Mariners the other day and didn’t use Mo, so Mo should be available too.

whozat says:

Mo’s pitched four of the last five days…I think you need to give him off tomorrow.

And this was Hughes’ first back-to-back appearance. I dunno if they want to make this his first back-to-back-to-back as well. Especially if he needs to spot-start for Wang in five days.

I think you have to make a quick call on Wang, DL him, call up Melancon or Alby to reinforce the pen, and decide if Aceves or Hughes is going to start in five days.

zs190 says:

I kind of doubt that unless it’s really obvious. We do have Ace, Bruney, Robertson and Tomko available for tomorrow. The bullpen pitched about 10 innings the last 2 days but it was spread out pretty well and was well rested before. I wouldn’t feel pressured to get another reliever up.

DreDog says:

Hughes has to get ready to start for Wang, no?

No, not necessarily. They need a starter Thursday, then they can regroup during the AS break. After Thursday, they won’t need a fifth starter until the 21st.

Maybe they piece that Thursday start together with Aceves and Tomko, and call up an extra reliever.

zs190 says:

You know, the way they talked about Hughes(granted, their words seem to change all the time), it almost sounds like we are more likely to see Sergio Mitre than Phil Hughes start that game.

DreDog says:

I could see that. I guess if Wang is going to take a little longer to heal, you get Hughes his innings, right?

zs190 says:

Oh yeah, if this is a long term thing, you stretch Hughes out like what Mariners did with Brandon Morrow. Like Mike said, all star break coming up, we don’t have to make this decision any time soon.

For lack of a more creative name... Alex says:

nah Hughes has pitched 2 straight already for the first time.

Bob C says:

probably not gonna use Hughes if Wang is gonna go to the DL, i’ll bet they move quickly to bring someone up though

zs190 says:

Our bullpen has just been awesome lately.

Riddering says:

HAHAHAHA.

A.J. is one sneaky bastard.

Bob Stone says:

It was a great move. Almost as deceptive as his curve ball when he is on

Bob Stone says:

WOW – I sort was mentally prepared for this game to be in the “automatic loss” column. We win against Halladay. Amazing. Baseball is definitely one sport that no one should ever bet on.

ARX says:

I didnt even gte home til the 8th, and I was just hoping Wang would hold it close…got my wish, sorta.
And BTW you shouldnt bet on ANY sport :) Just flush your money down the nearest toilet if you feel the need to get rid of it, its faster

e mills says:

good game and can finally go out…have fun all!

Bob Stone says:

Happy 4th Everyone. Enjoy it safely!

At first I thought what a weak attempt by Joba but it was smoke and mirrors

pete says:

none of this would have happened if joba were pitching the 7th and 8th for toronto

Jamal G. says:

Heh, if the Yanks had gone 8-0 against Boston, they’d have a 15-game lead. Boston has, but they only lead by one game. Yankees > Red Sox.

pete says:

etc (enjoy this comment – directive form)

Ivan says:

If the yanks win half those games, the yanks would lead the division.

ARX says:

If we were just 3-5 against them, we’d be up by 5 games. Hopefully theyll continue to tread water against the rest of the league, then we can put them in our rear view by spanking them in August :)

YankeesFanInMI says:

But Boston is 8-0 against the Yanks, so it’s still kind of tough to say that…

Dela G says:

the yankees will be heard from in the second half against the red sox. I cannot wait for august so we can spank them like the little beetches they are

whozat says:

So, what’d Joe say? “Someone missed something?” “Someone misunderstood something?”

Zach says:

first answer: “someone missed something”
follow up: “he misunderstood the plan [i believe thats the word he used]“

erik says:

Cano’s worst game ever
We Win
now let’s find a fifth starter how good is mitre?

bart says:

bunting is not stupid when you need 1 run to tie or win — it also may not be stupid to avoid dp with a guy who is having trouble picking a pitch to hit

3-0 is a perfect place to look fo an easy to bunt 4-seamer — you can make an argument for looking at 3 more pitches – you can make an argument for turning cano lose an hit and run – again expecting a cookie

but the guy has to execute — the yankees have lost several games in late innings with no outs buy failing to advance tying or winning run to 3rd – usually i blame this on Girardi’s in-gam tactics

maybe it is also on the players – last night needing runs in that bases loaded situation neither ARod or Cano wer patient – a fky ball from either would have plated a run — the wild pitch saved big egg on face

as to that pitcherr’d manager Giradi – there jave been many opportunities to give Phil future franchise multiple innings — Giradi has not done so — now needing Hughes back in His Slot — he will not be stetched and available — that’l be the excuse — and will get a spoot start from someone in AA or AAA

Ihope the wanger experiment ends here – get him healthy and keep him for nest year when Andy retires but develop Hughes now
