I can see why people hate swisher so much, with the getting on base and whatnot.

    • Riddering

It’s ridiculous that he thinks he can get on first without a single.

      What a jerk.

    • Accent Shallow

It’s mindboggling how much hatred the man inspires. People are listing his (relatively cheap!) contract under “bad contracts for Yankees to get out from” (along with Posada/A-Rod). I know he’s a guy who hits .240 while having defensive adventures, but he walks, hits for power, and gets to a lot of balls.

      • Chip

And by having defensive adventures you mean plays average to slightly above average defense right?

        • LiveFromNewYork

          ietc
and I like the term “defensive adventures” though I’m not sure it’s applicable to Swisher.

        • Accent Shallow

I meant what I said — he gets to a solid amount of balls, but he’s had his adventures in the field this year. I don’t remember hearing about them when he was in Oakland or Chicago, so maybe he’s packing a few years worth of fielding blunders into one year.

He’s not a bad defender (average to above), but he’s not as good as he could be, either.

  • http://theyankeeuniverse.com Moshe Mandel

That silly Swisher. Sacrifice? Walk? These things do not help you win games.

    • http://theyankeeuniverse.com Moshe Mandel

Pretty good. Sharp sinker, solid control. Looks pretty good. With some better fielding, it would be 5-0 or 5-1.

    • pat

Good, he had a few jitters in the first but his sinker is sinking nicely, he’s got his offspeed pitch working well. He was hitting 92-93 with the sinker. He’s been better than I thought he’d look.

Random thought-Mark Teahen would be an amazing addition to the bench. The question: is he worth the price?

    • http://bronxbaseballdaily.com Matt ACTY/BBD

They already got him in Eric Hinske. If Teahen could hit right handed, sure. I think they need another RHH w/some pop off the bench.

      • Chip

We’re the number one offense in baseball, I don’t think that’s where we need to be making trades

        • http://bronxbaseballdaily.com Matt ACTY/BBD

          I agree, just being a nit-picker.

      • RichYF

Teahen could replace Cody Rake on the bench presumably. Not sure what he costs though. Decent hitter. Certainly an upgrade over the Rake. 819/766 L/R OPS splits this year (SSS), 780/713 L/R OPS splits for his career.

        • RichYF

          L/R = R/L since he’s a lefty and all…

      • Accent Shallow

I’d rather have Teahen than Hinske, Teahen can actually play 3B on a regular basis. However, you’re obviously not gonna give up something of value for Teahen if you have Hinske.

  • http://theyankeeuniverse.com Moshe Mandel

So, Wakefield to DL, Buchholz in rotation. Now their depth is down to Bowden, and they have 3 meh guys in the rotation. They also desperately need a bat. Hmm, such depth.

    • Accent Shallow

Well, if they didn’t have such depth, Charlie Zink or some other such garbage would be in the rotation.

I think we can agree that Buchholz and Bowden are much preferable to him, no?

      • http://theyankeeuniverse.com Moshe Mandel

My point all along was that questionable depth is not depth. When you have 3 pitchers coming off major injury/over 40, you are hoping desperately that they stay healthy. That’s not depth.

        • Accent Shallow

Red Sox rotation depth chart, entering season:

          Lester
          Beckett
          Matsuzaka
          Wakefield
          Penny
          Masterson
          Buchholz
          Bowden
          Smoltz (June ETA?)

I’d say that’s pretty solid depth. Now, with Matsuzaka gone, Masterson probably in the pen permanently, Wakefield on the DL, it’s definitely weaker, but that’s a pretty enviable top 9 starters.

          • http://theyankeeuniverse.com Moshe Mandel

It’s solid. It is not otherworldy, as we are still being led to believe.

            Sabathia
            Burnett
            Wang
            Pettitte
            Joba
            Hughes
            Aceves
            Mitre
            Coke

            Not really a huge difference.

    • KG Sturnz0r

They have pitchers that you haven’t even heard of that can provide depth at a moment’s notice. they are that good.

    • RichYF

I don’t think you got the memo about Penny and Smoltz being quality starters. They’d easily be #2 guys on 20 teams in the league. I’d say either would command a Lee/Halladay type return.

  • KG Sturnz0r

please get the little guy out?!??1

  • Accent Shallow

Who do I have to kill to get Markakis on the Yankees?

Or andy McPhail’s wife, after he pays the ransom anyways!

  • V

Man, I think GMs are WAAAAY overvaluing their veterans lately. Shapiro wants a major league ready #2/#3 type for less than 1.5 seasons of a more expensive Cliff Lee?

I’m going to trade you 1996 Andy Pettitte for 2009 Cliff Lee? Really?

    • mtt

I think you may be undervaluing Cliff Lee here, the 2009 version is still pretty excellent, and it wouldn’t kill the Indians to keep him.

      • V

No, he is good. But is he so much better than your major league ready #2/#3?

        • mtt

Maybe not, but I think what it comes down to is that Indians have absolutely no need to move him.

      • http://www.theyankeeuniverse.com/ The Artist

I’m not sure they really want to deal him. Who’s their #1 in 2010 if not Lee? By dealing him, they’d be cashing in 2009 and 2010 unless they get back a young #1 type starter.

And if you’re the other team, would you deal a high end pitcher who’s going to be ready next year for a few months of Cliff Lee this season?

Just doesn’t make sense from either end.

    • http://www.theyankeeuniverse.com/ The Artist

If you have excess at a certain position and are ready to win, then it makes sense to overpay to fill a need. You have to go for it when you can.

      • V

But, how are you filling a need by trading a pitcher for a slightly better pitcher?

        • http://www.theyankeeuniverse.com/ The Artist

Would you trade IPK or Aceves or Z-Mac for a #1 if you’re a contender? I would.

          • V

IPK, Aceves, and Z-Mac are not major league ready #2/#3s. They’re all fringe #4 types, at best.

You do realize there are people here root for guys on the Sox to get hurt everytime we play too right?

      • LiveFromNewYork

Not me. And like I said, I always think it’s wrong. I don’t care who does it or who they wish it upon. It’s not cool.

  • Jersey

Texas still up 2-0 going to the bottom of the 5th

  • Salty Buggah

    I hope Jeter is okay…

  • Accent Shallow

Seriously guys, Brian Bass has a punchable face. Knock him out of the Gameday, I can’t look at him anymore.

  • Rich D.

Lets go Marte!!! Comeback player of the year? (maybe)

    • V

      Mitre.

Marte is in AA. He’s a reliever. He’s Dominican.

Mitre is pitching tonight in New York.

      • RichYF

So what you’re saying is that they’re difficult to motivate, lack work ethic, and use performance enhancing drugs?

    • JGS

      Scott Rolen methinks

  • Drew

Marte walks the first lefty he sees.. I guess results aren’t as important as his health though.

  • Tom Zig

    Goals for tonight:

    Mitre goes 6 innings
Yankees score a bunch of runs
Melancon, Robertson, and Bruney all pitch
    Boston loses
    Get drunk.

    • http://eemack.blogspot.com Jackson

You’re setting the bar high and I like it

    • Andy In Sunny Daytona

      6. Get rich.

      • Jersey

        6a. Or die trying

  • Yankees_Universe

How about this..Yankees score all the runs by HR for couple of games and both Joel Sherman and Francesa start calling them out for relying on HR..What are they goint to do now?

  • Salty Buggah

Cmon Mitre get out of this…DOuble play then out?

  • KG Sturnz0r

    call in Bru?

    • KG Sturnz0r

act, no. he should get a clean slate. Hughes?

  • Dorian

It’s a given Phil Hughes would have done way better tonight.

    RAB’d

    • Ivan

      He could of.

      /Ivan’d

      • Spaceman.Spiff

        He could have.*

    • http://farm1.static.flickr.com/153/413671602_daded72a81_m.jpg The Honorable Congressman Mondesi

      1. There was a healthy debate about those issues earlier, so it’s inaccurate to paint the commenters as some sort of monolithic entity.

      2. That’s not even funny. Try harder.

      • pat

Hahaha, nah I give him/(her?) credit. We throw a lotta zingers at everybody else, gotta be able to take a few that come our way.

        • RichYF

          Zinger [zing-er]

          -noun Informal.
          1. a quick, witty, or pointed remark or retort: During the debate she made a couple of zingers that deflated the opposition.
          2. a surprise, shock, or piece of electrifying news: The President’s resignation was a real zinger.

          Antonyms:
          1. It’s a given Phil Hughes would have done way better tonight.

    • KG Sturnz0r

      oh no he didn’t

    • http://bronxbaseballdaily.com Matt ACTY/BBD

      That’s so Dorian.

  • Drew

Not exactly what I was looking for from Marte but at least he’s pitching.

    • Andy In Sunny Daytona

True. Kind of just layed it on in there.

      • Drew

I was kind of pissed he threw 4 straight balls to the lefty..

  • http://www.riveraveblues.com Mike Axisa

    That was a hanger.

  • Steve in PDX

    f damon

  • http://bronxbaseballdaily.com Matt ACTY/BBD

    I can has Phil Hughes?

  • YankeeScribe

    More great D from Damon

  • Tom Zig

Damon must have gone to the Bobby Abreu School of how to play defense in the offseason

  • Drew

Way to knock it down Johnny.

  • Salty Buggah

Damn, Oh well…stop them there and we’re good.

Damon is sucking in LF a lot

  • Lanny

Damon is a butcher out in LF.

  • V

After Damon’s next AB, pull him for defensive reasons. This is beyond ridiculous at this point.

He’s a DH, and no, I don’t want him back next year.

  • Jersey

    Big K right there

  • Dela G

good god damon is terrible out there

  • http://www.theyankeeuniverse.com/ The Artist

    Mitre’s line for the night
6 Innings Pitched 2 Earned Runs

    Johnny Damon’s line:

6 Innings Played, 2 unearned Runs.

    • http://www.theyankeeuniverse.com/ The Artist

We’ve all heard of CERA, is there such a thing as LFERA?

  • Riddering

Damon’s got his eye on the prize of resigning tonight.

  • BigBlueAL

Honestly, what the hell has happened to Damon defensively this year????

  • Jersey

Nice hand from the crowd. That’s great, way to go guy.

  • http://www.riveraveblues.com Mike Axisa

Nice job Sergio. Now nail this shit down, bullpen.

  • Steve in PDX

    well done Surge

  • A.D.

If Mitre can do that, he won’t have the prettiest ERA but he’ll be good enough.

  • Drew

Not that it matters now but they have to charge damon with the error. I mean, the runner was held up until Damon dropped it.

  • Salty Buggah

Mitre was pretty decent, way more than we could have expected. His numbers would be way better if not for Damon.

  • Dela G

    attaboy mitre

    you deserve a great hand

its not your fault there was bad defense behind you at times

  • Rich D.

Mitre can win and cant lose! 5.2 innings, 8 hits, 4 runs, 3 ER, 1 BB, 4 K, 91 PC.

Not a bad first outing by the righty. Here comes Ace!!!

  • Ivan

Can’t ask for more than that from Mitre

  • http://theyankeeuniverse.com Moshe Mandel

3ER in 5.2, and I thought he looked better than that. Good pace, solid stuff, and a pitch that can get him out of jams. I like.

  • Salty Buggah

Ok offense score a couple of runs here to get more insurance and then the pens nails it down to get Mitre his 1st Win in a loooooong time.

  • Accent Shallow

At least Damon caught that ball.

  • dogface

    He was DECENT, not BAD.

  • Thomas A. Anderson

I think Mitre did well considering he got some bad defense behind him and he’s a 6th starter coming off of TJ.

He throws strikes, so that’s good. But he seems to give up a fair share of hits on said strikes.

If he can stick to 6 ip and 4 runs, the Yanks will take it till they figure out a better 5th starter.

  • KG Sturnz0r

Mitre’s arm got a little tired at the end, and he shied away from his bread and butter sinker

    • Salty Buggah

Yea I thought that too and that’s understandable

  • Dorian

I’m torn. I would love for Hughes to come in and lock it down but don’t we need to get Brew some confidence?

  • Rich D.

SHOCKER!!! A 4 PITCH WALK TO ROBBIE CANO!

  • Salty Buggah

Cano walk and Ransom walked twice..no DP Melky! You’re due for a HR…

  • Accent Shallow

A four pitch walk to Robbie! Always hilarious.

(I remember Halladay did that last year. Cue John Sterling . . . “You just can’t predict . . .”)

    • JGS

      well that’s baseball Suzyn

  • Dela G

i’m telling you, the stars are aligning

    cano and ransom have walks

  • http://www.riveraveblues.com Mike Axisa

    Bah, Melky. Got lucky there.

  • Jersey

Going to the bottom of the 6th in Texas, Rangers up 2-1 over Sawx

  • Dela G

    SCOREBOARD UPDATE

    Red Sox 1 Tejas 2

    Middle of the 6th

    • JGS

and Beckett is on cruise control–Texas hasn’t had a baserunner since the 1st

      • Jersey

        Until now

    • Dorian

What does the Rangers bullpen look like?

      • Dela G

Rangers bullpen presumably wont be in until the 8th inning

they will probably have Darren O’day then CJ wilson to slam the door

  • Salty Buggah

Melky needs to get hot, or at least somewhat warm, soon.

  • cola825

Nice play Cesar. Defensive wizard according to Sterling last night.

    • http://eemack.blogspot.com Jackson

One throwing error doesn’t negate the fact that he’s a fantastic defensive shortstop.

  • pat

WHAT THE FUUUUCK MELKY. I know they’re pro ballplayers and shit and forget more than I’ll ever hope to know but HOW CAN YOU SWING AT THE 3-1 pitch after he threw 7 straight balls and his 3-0 pitch was borderline. Goddamn it.

  • Rich D.

    If I was Joe G.:
Ace for the 7th or Bruney (hold your breath if its Bruney). Hughes for the 8th and if its save opportunity, MO for the 9th.

    • Dela G

      that’s exactly what will happen

      • Rich D.

Hopefully… Joe does have a tendency to manage the BP like its game 7 of the WS (match up EVERYONE)

  • Mac

Anyone remember when they were talking about Damon having eye problems? And so he stopped drinking caffeine? I wonder if that’s still an issue and he’s not talking about it.

  • Drew

DFA THIS BUM HE PLAYS ONCE EVERY 10 DAYS!!

  • http://bronxbaseballdaily.com Matt ACTY/BBD

Why is Ransom on this team? He’s awful.

    /half kidding

  • Salty Buggah

    CODY! CODY! CODY!

Bring at least one home Jeter

  • pat

HAHAHA if this shit is happening don’t even show up tomorrow Baltimore, we’re un-fuckin-touchable right now
