    Coke +1

  • whozat

That’s a great job by Coke. Cabrera’s been on fire.

  • sac

no he just had to get a hit by pitch in before they took him out

  • AndrewYF

Coke, the third setup man? I don’t understand why Aceves wasn’t used there, but I’m not complaining about the results.

    • Salty Buggah

nah Girardi plays matchups too much but Coke is effective againts both righties and lefties so Im okay with it.

    • Pasqua

Andrew–I tried typing this on the last thread before it closed (and apologies for not responding directly to this comment) but Kay did say re: Nomar that “Those are Hall of Fame numbers.” I may be running with it a bit, but it was uttered.

      • AndrewYF

What Kay said is true. Those are numbers a player who is on his way to a HOF career puts up. An amazing RoY campaign, two very impressive batting titles in his first 6 years in the majors. But Kay did qualify that by saying that his career has been devastated by injuries so he’s not a HoF player.

    • whozat

Didn’t Aceves pitch more recently? I don’t have a problem with saving him for games that are a little closer, and also maybe for longer stints. With Andy and Mitre, I could see some 3 inning opportunities in the next two days.

  • Salty Buggah

    COKE CAN!!!!! Nice one!

  • Johan Iz My Brohan

Don’t worry Joba is the 7th inning guy now, Hughes is our new 8th inning guy…

    • http://bronxbaseballdaily.com Matt ACTY/BBD

      On Nomar/Fenway:

      97: .819 OPS @ Fenway, .936 away
      98: .976/.920
      99: 1.061/.973
      00: 1.020/1.045

Do I need to go on?

      • bobtaco

        Fenway juice?

      • Accent Shallow

This comment is not topical, but Nomar was a hell of a hitter for awhile there.

    Incredible Coke!

  • Zach

    http://msn.foxsports.com/mlb/story/9848430/Red-Sox-may-renew-interest-in-A's-Cabrera

A scout’s take on Wallace: “He can hit but he throws like a girl. They acquired a DH — I think he might be Jack Cust Jr. with fewer Ks. (Outfielder Shane) Peterson is the hidden gem!”

    • Salty Buggah

Well, at least he’s not as bad as Damon.

      ZING!

    • Accent Shallow

My favorite thing about Wallace is that his nickname is “The Walrus.” He’s shaped like a woman who’s had five kids.

Guess Billy Beane wants to return to his roots of not selling jeans?

      • whozat

I’d love for him to become a huge fan-favorite in Oakland and have some jeans company start a local ad campaign with him that spoofs the old anna-nicole smith guess ads.

    • http://www.theyankeeuniverse.com/ The Artist

“He can hit but he throws like a girl. They acquired a DH”

I’m sure that DH’s everywhere will be writing angry letters and protesting these offensive comments.

      • Zach

maybe eye drops will help his arm?

I like the way you think, cowboy.

  • http://bronxbaseballdaily.com Matt ACTY/BBD

    WOW.

    • Pasqua

      My thoughts exactly.

  • Accent Shallow

What a good start from Joba. Thumbs way up.

Let’s see if he can keep this going . . .a run of 2008esque Joba starts would be just what this team needs.

And Mo gets to sit down! Haha, I approve.

  • leche: it does the yankees good

lmao at mo going back in to the bullpen dugout

  • Johan Iz My Brohan

Is the 5-1 lead Melancon/Robertson proof yet?

    • Accent Shallow

It looks like we’re getting Bruney.

I suppose I can support this, we know when he’s right that he’s a valuable reliever.

  • Tank the Frank

Good. For God’s sake get Robertson some work.

  • http://www.riveraveblues.com Mike Axisa

Oh good, put Bruney in so he can create another save situation for Mo.

    • Pasqua

      Confidence booster, maybe?

    • Mikebk

      it’s a conspiracy to pad Mo’s stats

    • Randy A.

Ya, jesus, they’re wasting the arms of Melancon and Robertson.

    • Accent Shallow

I dunno. I can support efforts to get Bruney right, because he can be anywhere from valuable to absolutely filthy.

I’d imagine a bad outing today would put him in the doghouse for awhile, and get Robertson and Melancon shots in these situations.

    • http://www.theyankeeuniverse.com/ The Artist

I know you’re half kidding, but we need to get Bruney going.

  • Salty Buggah

thank you JoPo…now can we put in D-rob or Melancon?

  • Accent Shallow

Walking Cano on four pitches! Someone get that man a medal!

  • Zach

4 pitch walk to Cano = cardinal sin of pitching

    • Accent Shallow

Roy Halladay did it the 2008 version of Cano.

As John Sterling says “You just can’t predict baseball.”

Now if you’ll excuse me, I’m going to shove a q-tip through my eardrum.

    • whozat

No, walking a relief pitcher to force in a run is the cardinal sin of pitching.

      • Zach

        ah +1

  • Salty Buggah

OK I wont mind Bruney but D-rob and Melancon are gonna be so rusty when we’re forced to use them and thats going to snowball into not using them more and more rust.

    • Zach

drob had 16BB in 22 IP during regular use, so saying he’ll be ineffective due to a layoff is just an excuse for him

    • Tank the Frank

I agree. But you gotta take the wins. It comes with the territory. Those two just aren’t high leverage situation pitchers right now. We’re winning close games and our starters are going deep into games so it only calls for one or two relievers. Plus Bruney is the one that is the most valuable of the three. Girardi needs to get him going.

Personally, I’m hoping for a couple more runs here so I can see Robertson. I really like him…plus Bruney worked the other day.

  • Tank the Frank

These wins are impressive because the A’s were putting up double-digit runs in their last series.

    • zs190

Their offense sucks, honestly is there even one guy that you can consider to be an all-star caliber now that Holliday is gone? That was more Twins pitching than A’s hitting.

  • Hip Hip Jorge!

    Hey I have a question:
Garza and Halladay both threw 9 innings tonight in the rays/blue jays game tonight but it is going into extra innings. Do they both get complete games or not? Is a complete game defined by literally a complete game or 9 innings?

    • Accent Shallow

A complete game is exactly that — start, and finish.

      • whozat

Yeah, you can have an 8-inning complete game if you’re the away team and you lose.

        • AndrewYF

Yup, this happens all the time.

You can even get a CG if you pitch 6 innings and the game gets called due to weather. I think it counts as a shutout too, if you don’t let in any runs.

      • Hip Hip Jorge!

Damn, Garza is on my fantasy team and I was hoping he would give me some CG points.

    • Charlie

it has to be a literal complete game. doesn’t have to be 9 innings.

      • http://www.theyankeeuniverse.com/ The Artist

Right, there have been guys who’ve had no hitters going into the 10th (or later) that got broken up, and they’re not credited with pitching a no hitter.

  • http://bronxbaseballdaily.com Matt ACTY/BBD

Why do they always talk about golf when O’Neill is on?

    • Mikebk

cause o’neill is always golfing when he isnt on. singleton loves to talk golf too

      Yikes.

      • Mike Ox

Gave up a HR to Mike Hampton.

    • AndrewYF

That trade will never be bad for the Mets, but right now, Cashman (and Theo) looks good.

      • http://www.theyankeeuniverse.com/ The Artist

It can’t, since they gave up nothing but Gomez who’s a 4th OF.

        • Zach

true, but the contract might be pretty bad

        • Accent Shallow

Deolis Guerra is actually pitching pretty well now that he was bumped up to AA.

          http://www.baseball-reference.com/minors/player.cgi?id=guerra001deo

He’s pretty much all the Twins can hope to salvage from that deal, unless Gomez harnesses his potential, or Humber and Mulvey have Henry Rowengartner surgery.

          • http://www.theyankeeuniverse.com/ The Artist

Gomez’s upside would be as a high-on base light hitting CF. But he has zero patience and strikes out way too much. He’s OPSing around .650 this year, and has 44 SO in about 200 PAs. If he played a full season, he’d SO 150 times with no pop and a below .300 OBP. He’s just a late inning defensive replacement at this point. Great glove, horrible hitter.

            http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/players/profile?playerId=28762

    • Tank the Frank

And another HR given up to a pitcher. Thank you Brian Cashman.

      BUT We NEED TEH JOHAAAAN!1!!!11

      • Zach

well hampton was always a good hitter, still not an excuse

Can you imagine who would be pitching the 8th if not Sir Philip of Hughes?

        Bruney? *shivers*

        • Accent Shallow

Nah, it’d be Joba, and he’d have maintained his 1192 ERA+ from 24 innings in 2007.

(Actually, if Joba could maintain a 1192 ERA+ across a full season of relieving, he would be more valuable in the bullpen.)

    • BoB

OMG JOHAN A BUST THANK GOD THE YANKS DIDNT GET HIM. MELKY IS THE NEXT MANTLE AND HUGHES IS THE SUCCESSOR TO MO!!

Makeup call for that Jeter blown call?

    • Mike Ox

Blown call agaisnt Jeter can only be made up by beheading the umpire who made the bad call.

      • Salty Buggah

that call kinda lost us the game, this call didnt help us win one so no makeup yet

        • Zach

lost us the game? first inning?

          • Salty Buggah

            how much we lose by?

            • Zach

dont know, but cant say a blown call in the first inning cost us the game. if it was a foul ball incorrectly ruled a grand slam, ok. but a guy out at 3rd, cant say it cost them the game IMO, they had 26 outs left

  • Yankees_Universe

he was out by at least 10ft.

    • Accent Shallow

The ball beat him, but that was a bad tag/attempted tag.

  • Salty Buggah

jeter DP here…calling it, he’s due so better to get it out now

    • Salty Buggah

      I’ll take a run too

  • http://bronxbaseballdaily.com Matt ACTY/BBD

So Melancon? D-Rob? Or will it still be Bruney.

Aaaaaaaaaaand another food reference w/Paul O’Neill.

    • Nady Nation

IMO, it should still be Bruney. He’s most likely to help the bullpen this year in high leverage situations, so we need to try to get him straightened out.

  • http://www.riveraveblues.com Mike Axisa
    • http://bronxbaseballdaily.com Matt ACTY/BBD

why did I think he was younger than 33?

    • Randy A.

      your thoughts?

    • Mikebk

good. then they saw him throw 24 pitches and give up 2 runs so that should end that idea.

    • Mike

What do you think it takes to get Downs?

    • Accent Shallow

      Scott Downs?

They could certainly do worse. He’s been money for years now.

  • Mikebk

i wouldnt even use bruney now…let melancon get some work

    • JobaWockeeZ

While Bruney could sue work he already got an earlier assignment so Melancon/D-Rob is likely.

Tampa Bay – Top of 3rd SCORE
Roy Halladay pitching for Toronto TAM TOR
        J Bartlett walked. 0 0
B Upton doubled to right center, J Bartlett to third. 0 0
C Crawford hit sacrifice fly to center, J Bartlett scored. 1 0
        B Upton stole third. 1 0
E Longoria hit sacrifice fly to left, B Upton scored. 2 0
        C Pena struck out looking. 2 0
        2 Runs, 1 Hits, 0 Errors

how does he give up one earned run?

        • Zach

no clue. yahoo and espn have it 2r, 1er too

        • zs190

Where did you get that? That’s not what Gameday says happened. BJ Upton didn’t steal 3rd, he moved up to 3rd via passed ball and then scored, that’s why it was unearned.

    • Mikebk

      passed ball probably.

    • zs190

Passed Ball, not an error technically, but can causes unearned runs.

      • JobaWockeeZ

Francesa actually once said. Starting pitching does NOT win games. Your bullpen does. I paraphrased it a little but that’s honestly what he claimed.

        • Zach

for the last 10 years it was: how do you win championships? STARTING PITCHING
over last 2 years: how do you win championships? GREAT BULLPENS!

        • Teix is the Man

No, I know exactly what you’re talking about…he mentioned that even though the Yanks had a slightly better rotation, Boston was better because their bullpen was lights out (I immediately changed the channel out of frustration).

    “Yankees Looking At Downs
By Mike Axisa [July 24 at 9:07pm CST]

Jeff Blair of The Globe And Mail passes along a note that the Yankees are looking at Blue Jays closer Scott Downs. In today’s massive Roy Halladay thread we learned that the Yanks had scouts in Toronto tonight, and we’ve known that they’re on the look out for arms.”

    http://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2009/07/yankees-looking-at-downs.html

Hmmmm. Maybe they’re not just advance scouting after all.

Adding an arm in the pen would free up Aceves to start, which is something I suspect they would like to do, or at least have the option to do if one of the starters gets hurt.

Right now, the Yanks have a storm coming in their starting rotation. For the moment they’re fine, but Joba will be hitting his innings limits sometime around September. With Wang likely gone for the year, and Joba due to get dropped in a little over a month, they would be looking at Sergio Mitre as their Game 4 starter in the ALCS, should they get there.

And that’s without anyone getting hurt. If Andy’s shoulder wears down like it did last year, Sergio Mitre would be your #3 starter. So they need to make a move of some kind for a starter, either internally or externally.

There is however, a third way. You could skip Joba every third start for the rest of the season, leaving him only 7 more starts for the rest of the year. Or you could give him most of September off, and then just get him ready for the playoffs with a late September start or two. The latter is the more likely of the two if they go this route. They will want to establish a lead or have a comfortable playoff spot secured before giving one of their starter an extended Sabbatical.

sorry for reposting this… and I don’t know why I care… but it says Halladay gave up one earned run… here is the scoring summary…

Tampa Bay – Top of 3rd SCORE
Roy Halladay pitching for Toronto TAM TOR
    J Bartlett walked. 0 0
B Upton doubled to right center, J Bartlett to third. 0 0
C Crawford hit sacrifice fly to center, J Bartlett scored. 1 0
    B Upton stole third. 1 0
E Longoria hit sacrifice fly to left, B Upton scored. 2 0
    C Pena struck out looking. 2 0
    2 Runs, 1 Hits, 0 Errors

how does he give up one earned run? typo?

I replied above. This is inaccurate, Upton did not steal 3rd, he went to 3rd on passed ball then scored, that’s why it was unearned.

Am I the only one who thinks the White Sox announcer’s call of Buehrle’s PG was rather weak?

    • Drew

I was listening to Hawk from the 7th inning on. I didn’t think it was weak.
