Game 96: We’re going streaking (with a Wang update)!
ByThe A’s won’t have the services of Matt Holliday for the rest of the series because he was traded to the Cardinals earlier today, but they will be trotting Brett Anderson out to the mound tonight. He’s got a 1.15 ERA and a .402 OPS against in his last five starts, and those numbers are even more ridiculous (0.00 & .269) in his last three start. The young lefty, once the headliner in a package for Dan Haren, will make the Yanks earn it tonight if they plan on running the winning streak up to eight. Hope Joba’s up for it.
Jeter, SS
Damon, LF
Teixeira, 1B
A-Rod, 3B
Posada, C
Matsui, DH
Cano, 2B
Swisher, RF
Melky, CF
And on the mound, Jobber Chamberlain.
Update (6:32 p.m. by Ben): While earlier today we reported that Chien-Ming Wang‘s tests would be shown to Dr. James Andrews for a third opinion, now it sounds as though the Yanks’ once and former ace will make the trip to Alabama himself. Wang could be seeing Andrews as early as Monday, and I can’t expect the Yanks to receive any good news. Maybe we’re better off hearing about Wang’s damaged shoulder. It would be explain his incredible ineffectiveness this year.

Kinda sounds like a case of trying to overcompensate for weak legs by using more arm. No bueno.
That sounds very accurate, whoever initially told him to not exercise his legs makes me very angry right now.
Yea, he should have been on some type of exercising program, even if it was light.
Just what I was thinking. Cashman is right, players are like pets. Or probably more like little kids pretending not to be sick just to get some ice cream. Which of course only makes it worse.
Well, I hope we can get some hits off of Anderson like we did the last time we faced him and I hope Joba can repeat his last performance today to help us win another. I wanna see that electric stuff again deep in the game.
Oh, and go Orioles for the next 3 games.
The fuck? YES JUST found out about Joba’s innings cap?
Are you surprised? Don’t lie.
Yeah I was. I mean teams somewhat follow the Verducci rule and seeing how they treated Joba in the past is it that surprising there will be an innings limit?
They can’t take him out of the rotation in a World Series run. They just can’t replace him in the rotation. He is their 3rd best pitcher and should be starting game 3 in the playoffs. Getting to the playoffs is the first concern though, and they won’t do that with Hughes and Joba in the bullpen while Mitre and Igawa are starting.
Okay he gets injured next year. Who takes his place?
Ok, Sergio Mitre pitches game 4 in a playoff series? Is that really what you want?
They need to manage his innings between now and October so 15-20 innings in the post season won’t be a big deal. I assume he will either be pulled early or skip a couple of starts. That should keep him innings down enough so he can keep pitching through the end of the season.
This is the Joba we know and love — full count to the first batter of the game.
How the [redacted] do you let someone like O-Cab steal third?
Damn you A’s! No Stoles Bases for you guys! You are sabermetric!
Well 17 pitches but not too bad. The run was “manufactured.” His velocity was 91-92 but hit 94 twice.
this is prettty much how they started off yesterday. i just hope that they can get to him before its too late
it’ll be tough
anderson>>>>>>>>>>ah yo vinnie from jersey
3 up 3 down 3 K’s…Oh Boy, Joba better be good and efficient tonight
Unfortunately, Anderson is much better than Mazzarro, so they may have to do something other than wait for 2nd/3rd time through the order.
That bodes well for the offense.
I want a double play ball…
Lets go Joba.
I can’t watch the game tonight…how does Joba look so far?
Hahah, Paul O’Neill thought he was in the Bronx is Burning
CC’s sideburns just blew Paulie’s mind tonight.
sooooooooooo I guess even oakland has finally realized moneyball is bs
yeah, who would want to exploit market inefficiencies
Yeah, exploiting market inefficiencies to get good players for cheap is so 2002!
Not really. The whole idea behind Moneyball was identifying the skills that were under appreciated. Ten years ago, that was OBP and slugging. Now, those skills are very important to most teams so the value lies elsewhere.
i.e defense
Although that seems to be getting valued more accurately now (at least by some teams).
Michael Kay misunderstands what “Moneyball” was all about.
Jorge and Joba are definitely communicating better.
So the Yankees take their 3rd best starter out of the rotation and put him in the bullpen to pitch the 7th inning? Hughes is the heir apparent to Mo and Joba is the heir apparent to Hughes. It’s a joke! Mitre and Igawa starting meaningful games in September? What a joke.
When did they take their third best starter out of the rotation? Isn’t Joba starting tonight, or am I mistaken?
I agree, I am sort of disgusted. I say screw the innings cap altogether. We NEED Joba in the rotation right now, especially in September.
Screwing it leaves him more prone to get injured.
I know I am so disgusted at something that hasn’t happened yet and might not ever happen. That is so awful. Those people who haven’t done that thing yet must be so stupid for doing it. Oh wait…..
I don’t have a good feeling about this game. Joba better keep them to 1 run for another 6 innings.
He has a perfect game through 2 with 4 K’s
/Trying to jinx
I can’t remember the last time the Yankees went down in order the first two innings with 4Ks.
Wait, now I remember. It was yesterday.
oh no heyman is pissing off the mlb network guys by questioning Thome as a compiler and not a HOF hilarious yeah you tell em Jon
I would like for Kay to start harping on Anderson’s perfect game very soon.
Yea cant wait. He’s always saying that for the Yanks pitchers but never for the opponents’
Agreed. He can’t shut up about no hitters for the Yanks side but when opposing pitchers are working on one all of a sudden he’s got to talk about ketchup or fans in the stadium.
Hopefully we get him the 2nd time through.
OO me like 1-2-3 innings.
Seems like Joba is working quickly so far? Good to see him establish a quick rhythm and not really labor on the mound.
nice little 10 pitch inning and 7 were strikes. See Joba, this is what happens you throw strikes.
take that no hitter what
Perfect Game Ended
Cano has been superhuman lately.
Lazy Lazy Cano…
Melky, Swish, Jeter, and A-rod are due for HRs
no DP Melky
Melky McClutch better show up tonight!
Are we getting Good Melky back?
Nice Melky! Cmon Jeter…no K!
Cano and Cabrera, the lazy dominican boys trying to start the offensive barrage!
JETER!
nice Jete! OK Johnny no DP
that works I guess
Right in the ass cheek.
Why is Melky reading the Post in the dugout??
he’s a very cultured young man
He delivers milk AND the newspaper!
heh
[insert milkman/housewife joke here]
It was funny how the YES footage quickly panned away.
“OMG we must not support literacy!”
And what does the NY Post have to do with literacy?
We are talking about athletes. The bar can only be set so high.
+1
bahah o-dog.
I think I would really enjoy a booth of Singleton, Cone or Leiter and as the X factor.. Walt Frasier. That would be awesome.
DFA-Rod
This Chamberlain fellow is a pretty good pitcher.
Huh? It’s the 8th inning yet though so he must suck! He only is good in the 8th. And he’s only throwing 93-94 now.
So what? He is 10x more valuable in the bullpen. One day he will be the setup man for the heir apparent in Phil Hughes!!!
nice 11 pitch inning Joba, now just hold them there. Cmon Offense, score a couple more now.
haha I like that Subway commercial
is it the CC Johan one?
Yeah, first time Ive seen it(I’m out of market)
Yeah, I saw it for the first time last weekend; I went back to NY to go to some games on Sat/Sun (time-release father’s day present) and I saw it while watching Friday’s game on TV with my Dad.
51 pitches through 4… nawt too bad.
Yea and 17 of those came in the 1st. Only 34 in the 3 innings since. Let’s hope he keeps it up.
BAL 1
BOS 0
Top 4th
Penny’s throwing a lot of pitches
Best depth smarts can buy!
Penny at 70 pitches through 3.2
Bergesen has 45 pitches through 3.
And now an injury delay?
its ok, they have the depth to let their pitchers go 5 IP
Anderson should be getting sleepy after that water.
that water thing was pretty funny. maybe its not water….maybe some goose, to get him loose….
loosey goosey atmosphere
/rod’d
or some ‘tron, to catch him in the zone
That was annoying.
Come on, Joba. It’s not like you need to be terribly careful with Ryan Sweeney.
Walk, it’s ok Barton is up now
DP!
Cmon Blue Jays…freaking passed ball allowed a sac fly for them and tied the game
I have a feeling Billy Beane just made another one of his good trades, once again with the Cards (As with Mulder).
He just got their 1st, 2nd and Supplemental Round picks from last year for 2 months of Matt Holiday in a year that he’s not in contention.
Has he ever made a bad trade?
Yeah, Hudson for Meyer, Thomas and Cruz was pretty darn bad.
Hideous.
Tim Hudson
Harden
That trade was bad, except for the guy who pitched tonight. And if Anderson reaches his ceiling, then it was a decent trade, despite the other 4 players being crap.
Pretty sure this guy came over with in the Haren deal.
Rich Harden i said, not Danny Haren
Josh Donaldson Sean Gallagher, Matt Murton and Eric Patterson came over for Harden
meant it as a reply to artist not steve
Right, The Cubbie deal from last year.
That one looks pretty awful as well. But Harden was hurt so much he just had to dump him the first chance he got. Probably should have kept him instead of taking that package.
Yes, He did. Thought you typed ‘Haren’.
Long day at work.
What the hell was that, Joba suddenly just gave up 2 walks?
Am I missing something here?
cmon yankees
Posada bashing in 3,2,1…
cruising than walk walk wp I hate this game
k k I love this game
Has there been a game this week where Posada DIDN’T let a pitch (or two or three) go between his legs with runners on base?
Seems to happen every night lately.
yea it seems like it
cmon Joba, get out of this…one k, then any out.
He’s definitely trying, 3 96-mph fastballs to Ellis, reaching back a bit to try to strike him out here.
nice K JOBA!
Damn, I love Joba. Crazy fool that he is.
A new form of emotion for joba? Pounding his chest like an ape and screaming like tarzan?
YEZZUR!!!
its him showing he has the demeanor to be in thebullpen instead of the rotation
JOBA THE HOUSE!!!!
Dass right we be fistpumpin, bitch.
Big escape from Joba. Me likey.
Its the 5th inning…
put him in the bullpen
JOBA! nice!
Don’t get too excited people. Joba will soon be relegated to pitching the 7th inning. Joba for the 7th, Hughes for the 8th, Mo for the 9th. Joba will be the 8th inning guy in a couple years and Hughes will be the closer. I just don’t know how Brian Cashman can look CC Sabathia in the eye and tell him that he’s taking a talent like Joba out of the starting rotation.
We don’t need no stinkin’ rotation! Not with our bullpen.
Pen >>>>>>> Rotation.
Joba no like contact!!!11!!!1
See THAT is an ace in the making right there. He gets into a little jam and then promptly strikes out the next two batters.
3 weeks ago it was bitching about joba couldnt limit the damage
some people are idiots
nothing to see here
He’s learned from the vets how to pitch over the past 3 weeks.
But he doesn’t listen!
they all beg cashman to send him down to AAA
ha!
Yankees now have 3 starters with ERA’s under 4.
Hey the YES gun is working today!
It is? Wait until someone throws a breaking ball.
JOBA IS IN EFFING BEAST MODE
Insane bounce.
Gardner would have had a double.
hahahhaa
Anderson is going to be doing PFP’s for quite a while after this game.
PFP = pretty f*cking pissed?
Pitchers fielding practice. Basically, there are goundballs and you run to first to cover the base.
And I always laughed at those drills when i watched ST
pitcher’s fielding practice
no DP Jeter…
You quiero tack-on runs
OK, as long as its not a DP jete…now no DP Johnny
In Play, run(s)!
The 2009 New York Yankees; We’re gonna Fielders Choice the Fuck Outta you.
OK now Im confused!…I thought we only relied on long balls
Thine eyes deceive.
Penny just gritted his way through 5 innings of 1 run ball. Seems like the rumored Penny/Smoak swap could be back on the table.
Can they afford to deal him anymore? Who would be their 4th starter right now?
Depth.
Oh, OK. . gotcha.
(walks away scratching head)
dont worry they have depth
GIVE ME A ‘D’!
GIVE ME A ‘E’!
GIVE ME A ‘P’!
GIVE ME A ‘T’!
GIVE ME A ‘H’!
WHAT DOES IT SPELL?
RED SOX!!!!
thanks damon for another FC run!
now for tex!
See Swisha haters. Walks are GOOD! It led to a run there
my god anderson can’t field worth shit
is he OCD?
Did a fastball right down Broadway to O-Cab get called a ball?
Seemed like it on Gameday..Im confused too.
Yup.
The boys are havin a good old time with Anderson.
What the hell is wrong with this guy?
Bergensen is mailing it in to help the Sox win. Geez
Messier!
what the hell is anderson doing?
I have no idea but it is really scaring me.
whats he doing? Im not watching
Gotta love Mess enjoying a brew while at the game with his kids.
Dude that was like a glass of wine or something. I think Mark Messier drinks wine spritzers.
Hmmmm. Looked like one of the tiny 12 oz. cups of Bud Light to me.
Well it is certainly possible that Mess has gigantic paws that made it look like a wine glass. Eh, nevertheless Messier is the Man.
Sweet, nice Joba! Now Joba for the 7th!
Who makes you nervous the most, Abreu approaching the wall, Damon throwing a ball, or Swisher leaping for a ball.
Some good will come out of Swisher and Abreu in the field, no good comes from Damon’s arm
Well, Abreu and wall make me nervous because I know at least Swisher will usually make the catch.
damon fielding the ball is worse
Damon by far.
Could Joba go 8 today?
messier is a class act
It must be Douchbag night at the stadium.
haha i thought that too when i saw the sunglasses guido-esqe guy from jersey
A-ROD BLINDS THE OUTFIELD WITH HIS BALLS.
me gusta
Dang, 2 bad plays in an inning for Aubrey Huff allows Sox to score another run.
He’s really a DH.
Yankees <3 RBI FC
Scoring runs with out HR’s. Me likey.
AROD MAKES REGULAR PEOPLE GO BLIND!
One of the better intangibles.
yep
That works.
Has M.Kay not seen enough opposite field hits in his career? Every time some one hits the ball other way he says “nice piece of hitting”…today he just added Outstanding for Jorge ground out to second.
It was because he was moving the runner over.
I know that but isn’t the opposite field hitting also the part of hitters arsenal? How come everytime some one hits opposite field is a nice piece of hitting?
I know he helped the runner move but to call any out outstanding is just too much.
it’s not like every batter can do it. we always criticized giambi for pulling everything, but opposing teams put the shift on Tex too
I haven’t noticed him do it all the time, but in that case it was a nice piece of hitting. Certainly it’s not something every hitter can do i.e Giambi who got slaughtered by the shift because he was a dead pull hitter.
I am actually very big on guys approach at the plate also. During the middle of June NOBODY was taking the ball the other way. The whole game against John Lannan guys were swinging from their heels.
What a ricochet.
Yankees playing good baseball
Anderson has a nice breaking ball, huh?
Semi-funny story. I have a 14-year old cousin in New Hampshire who is a pretty promising pitcher. His entire immediate family are Red Sox fans. Big time. I have them convinced that I have a friend of friend who is Yankee scout in the New England area, and I have tipped the scout off about him. I keep saying that whenever the Yanks pick him, they will all have to become Yankee fans. They are worried. I do not have a bright family.
Hahaha, nice.
Penny, 6IP, 1R, 0ER
fools gold
Expect Peter Gammons to bang his chest tomorrow on how brilliant the Brad Penny signing was and how he is now the “stopper”
Or he’ll be in a pacakge for Adrian Gonzalez
Really the dropped pop up game counts as a yankee classic?
It kinda should. That was rare and amazing.
Hey, they need programming for Saturday night.
I’ll never forget that 9th inning.
That was a terrifying routine fly ball.
Thanks Johnny.
Joba’s gonna go 8. Outstanding.
This Brett Anderson fellow seems kind of strange
+1
Why? Whats he doing? A couple other commentators have brought that up too. so Im curious.
To put it bluntly: he drinks water with an drowsily orgasmic expression.
and he holds his necklace with one hand, and flips it with his other thumb 37 times with his eyes closed
odd
Let me elaborate: when it’s his turn up to pitch he has this ritual with the water bottle. He teases it, teases it, then takes a gulp and lets his lips linger on the top.
He also does the necklace thing and has an expression like Coke on medical marijuana.
Odd is right.
Joba for the 8th!!!!!!!!!!
He has 93 pitches. Will we see Joba pitch the eighth for only the second time in his starting career?
He should unless the Yankees put up a big number in the bottom of the 7th.
nice to see joba with back to back starts with length. assume he is done now? or do they send him back to start the 8th since he is only at 93 pitches?
wow this is the best joba start i’ve ever seen
Joba to the 8th?!
He pitched all those meaningless innings of 1-7, can he keep it together for the inning he was born for?!?!?
IETCVM
I wonder if the Douche Twins took off their sunglasses for “God Bless America”?
haha of course not
Joba to the 8th!
They won’t have Joba go 8. This has been a really good outing for him. It would sorta ruin a lot if he goes out there and gets shelled. Whereas the upside of him pitching the 8th is not that great.
No, I disagree. You can’t think that negative. He’s on a 100 pitch count. You could let him face the first batter or two. If they get on, you call in Ace or Coke.
Looks like we are gonna get another one of those comeback victories.
Take that Francesa!
does 4-1 still count as a pitching duel?
93 pitches.
Send Joba out for a batter or two in the 8th?
Melky hates RAB!
Good Melky tonight!
Paul O’Neill was never happy.
Tell me about it. He grew on me after a while, but I really couldn’t stand his crybaby act when he first got here.
Liked him more when I realized most of it was directed at himself, and he grew up a lot after seeing some of his tantrums on tape.
nice little day for Melky…no DP Johnny!
We need D-rob/Melancon/Bruney pitching today
grace and balance melky lacks
Melky is an adventurous baserunner.
and a cunning linguist.
oh boy i love melky
bad Johnny!
he’s taking over from jeter when during interleague play jeter was captain double play
is it me or has Damon been horrible lately?
it’s the truth
mmm…he’s been bad in July, yeah. He’s been getting on base well, taking a lot of walks, but he’s not slugging at all. His isoD is great, but everything else is gone right now.
kinda seems like it, though was 8-23 since the break entering today’s game
is it a bad thing that i don’t remember him getting hits?
He fouled that?
pfft passed the baton!
I’d love a little more insurance right here, make it not-a-save-situation
or, you know, “make it a non-save situation” if I wanted to avoid phrasing it as awkwardly as possible.
Either way Girardi will end up putting Hughes in……….
So you are opposed to Mariano being able to collect a useless metric? You don’t want to unnecessarily use a pitcher coming off shoulder surgery? You’d rather the rest of the bullpen get work in to avoid staying rusty?
Hahahaha. This is the best since Melky’s double got cut short due to him tumbling.
An “unclutch” homerun by a-rod would be pretty nice right now.
Yup. Bad some stats, get the lousy relievers some work.
tack some on a-rod so melancon and d-rob can work and the main guys get another day off.
Is Michael Kay serious right now? Is he actually asking why ballplayers want to spend more time with their families? This is almost as bad as asking the Army AD how good the gifts for his daughter from Dusty Baker were.
He also asked what they mean by “repeating your delivery”.
Well, I think that was just for clarification purposes if people at home didn’t know.
Yeah, you’re likely right.
ouch
pitching duel in Toronto…2-2 top 9.
halladay 8 1/3, garza 8 so far
halladay would pitch 13 if they’d let him
well 9 IN 1ER in each of his last 2 certainly isnt hurting his value.
Thanks for the tip.
man alex has struck out 2 times when he needed to drive in runs
not complaining, but a yuck day for him
yea but we had the lead each time so he didnt feel like padding his stats…He only hits when we’re down one or tied
In the off-season, he worked with the coaches to adjust his stat-padding method to compensate for the fan backlash.
you guys are so right
damn! Oh well, Joba for another batter or 2 then D-rob…Im guessing Girardi puts in Ace or Coke though
“Roy Halladay Rumors: Friday
By Ben Nicholson-Smith [July 24 at 7:46pm CST]
7:46pm: Bob Elliot of The Toronto Sun reports that only the Phillies and Yankees have scouts watching Halladay tonight.”
http://www.mlbtraderumors.com/.....day-2.html
First thought is that the Yanks could simply be doing some advance scouting, since he’s on their upcoming schedule. Yanks face the Blue Jays August 4-5, and then again August 10-12. Halladay should be penciled in for the 4th, barring a deal.
Meaningless.
that was my hope when i read it.
Hope? I understand not wanting to give up the top guys, but he’s probably the best pitcher in baseball.
OMG YES! We see Halladay again! What is it the 3rd straight effing series?
well those games arent til august so hopefully he will be in philly by then.
I think he will be. Amaro is just playing hardball since he knows he’s pretty much bidding against himself. Ricchardi would have been smart to let the Yanks and Sox think they were in this, then send him to the NL.
Unless they trade him to the Phils
Four terrible pitches to a terrible hitter. Maybe it’s time to yank Joba?
I hate leadoff walks…
and hitting the next batter
oh well, time to take out joba
Well, that’s a minor stain on an otherwise excellent start. Let’s hope the pen can lock it down.
only minor if those runs don’t make it in.
Should have kept him out.
I don’t feel comfortable right now with Coke in there. He’s been real lucky his last few outings.
Me neither.
why does girardi insist on going to the same 3 relievers for what seems to be every game? what’s the point of having melancon here if he’s not going to get innings?
really melancon right now? guy on first and 2nd with 0 outs in the 8th and joba pitches 7 great innings?
Yeah. There’s a time to use Melancon, but two runners on, no outs, up three isn’t the time.
I’d be ok with letting him pitch the ninth, especially if they get some more runs.
It’s Torre-esque, but I won’t argue. He wants the wins, and so do I.
He wants wins and he wants to save his job.
Yup and yup. Bless his heart.
The Yankee front office ruined Joba. Look how terrible he was in the 8th because of them. He had a 2007 ERA+ of 1192, why can’t he replicate that? I’ll be the first to say he should be traded for a winner like Bronson Arroyo.
Hey, technically he didn’t pitch the 8th. That’s one more inning for down the line, baby!
[I hate that we have to start counting down.]
cmon Cokie.
i thought you called him Cookie at first
hehe
Sit down, Nomar. You’re done.
PHIL COKE PUMPS NOMAAAAAAAHHH
DP oppurtunity!
Man, Yankee fans really don’t like No-mah…
huge K there
My heart stopped there. Sheesh.
One more.
+48
I hate the YES camera sometimes. The way it rose, I thought it was gone for sure, then I saw Swisher.
I LOVE COKE
Pepsi is my choice
Man, Nomar was DIRTY with Boston.
Fenway product, nothing more.
Why do you think the Sox suddenly started scoring when they got back to Fenway? Yet never seem to win on the road?
I just love when “analysts” cite All-Star game appearances as a credential for induction to the Hall of Fame. Nomar had six? Six?! Get that man a plaque (and ignore nearly a decade of injury-riddled inconsistency)!
Seriously, though, go look at his numbers with Boston. He was absolutely great.
They didn’t say he belonged in the HOF.
man we really need to use the other relievers soon
girardi will start looking like torre
Not until he starts putting Hughes into 6 or 7-run games.
yes. but this is not the inning to “get a guy work”
Nice pitch, Phil. Nice D, Posada.
Come on, Coke…prove me wrong!
you kidding me, another WP?
K!
