Game 96: We’re going streaking (with a Wang update)!

By

The A’s won’t have the services of Matt Holliday for the rest of the series because he was traded to the Cardinals earlier today, but they will be trotting Brett Anderson out to the mound tonight. He’s got a 1.15 ERA and a .402 OPS against in his last five starts, and those numbers are even more ridiculous (0.00 & .269) in his last three start. The young lefty, once the headliner in a package for Dan Haren, will make the Yanks earn it tonight if they plan on running the winning streak up to eight. Hope Joba’s up for it.

Jeter, SS
Damon, LF
Teixeira, 1B
A-Rod, 3B
Posada, C
Matsui, DH
Cano, 2B
Swisher, RF
Melky, CF

And on the mound, Jobber Chamberlain.

Update (6:32 p.m. by Ben): While earlier today we reported that Chien-Ming Wang‘s tests would be shown to Dr. James Andrews for a third opinion, now it sounds as though the Yanks’ once and former ace will make the trip to Alabama himself. Wang could be seeing Andrews as early as Monday, and I can’t expect the Yanks to receive any good news. Maybe we’re better off hearing about Wang’s damaged shoulder. It would be explain his incredible ineffectiveness this year.

Kinda sounds like a case of trying to overcompensate for weak legs by using more arm. No bueno.

    • Johan Iz My Brohan says:

That sounds very accurate, whoever initially told him to not exercise his legs makes me very angry right now.

      • Salty Buggah says:

Yea, he should have been on some type of exercising program, even if it was light.

    • Just what I was thinking. Cashman is right, players are like pets. Or probably more like little kids pretending not to be sick just to get some ice cream. Which of course only makes it worse.

  2. Salty Buggah says:

Well, I hope we can get some hits off of Anderson like we did the last time we faced him and I hope Joba can repeat his last performance today to help us win another. I wanna see that electric stuff again deep in the game.

Oh, and go Orioles for the next 3 games.

  3. JobaWockeeZ says:

The fuck? YES JUST found out about Joba’s innings cap?

    • Salty Buggah says:

      Are you surprised? Don’t lie.

      • JobaWockeeZ says:

Yeah I was. I mean teams somewhat follow the Verducci rule and seeing how they treated Joba in the past is it that surprising there will be an innings limit?

    • Little Bill says:

They can’t take him out of the rotation in a World Series run. They just can’t replace him in the rotation. He is their 3rd best pitcher and should be starting game 3 in the playoffs. Getting to the playoffs is the first concern though, and they won’t do that with Hughes and Joba in the bullpen while Mitre and Igawa are starting.

      • JobaWockeeZ says:

Okay he gets injured next year. Who takes his place?

        • Chris says:

Ok, Sergio Mitre pitches game 4 in a playoff series? Is that really what you want?

They need to manage his innings between now and October so 15-20 innings in the post season won’t be a big deal. I assume he will either be pulled early or skip a couple of starts. That should keep him innings down enough so he can keep pitching through the end of the season.

  4. Accent Shallow says:

This is the Joba we know and love — full count to the first batter of the game.

  5. Accent Shallow says:

How the [redacted] do you let someone like O-Cab steal third?

  6. Salty Buggah says:

Damn you A’s! No Stoles Bases for you guys! You are sabermetric!

  7. Salty Buggah says:

Well 17 pitches but not too bad. The run was “manufactured.” His velocity was 91-92 but hit 94 twice.

  8. lily-bk says:

this is prettty much how they started off yesterday. i just hope that they can get to him before its too late

  9. Salty Buggah says:

3 up 3 down 3 K’s…Oh Boy, Joba better be good and efficient tonight

  10. Accent Shallow says:

Unfortunately, Anderson is much better than Mazzarro, so they may have to do something other than wait for 2nd/3rd time through the order.

  11. Riddering says:

That bodes well for the offense.

  12. Salty Buggah says:

    I want a double play ball…

  13. Ivan says:

    Lets go Joba.

  14. Johan Iz My Brohan says:

I can’t watch the game tonight…how does Joba look so far?

  15. pat says:

Hahah, Paul O’Neill thought he was in the Bronx is Burning

  16. cjc says:

sooooooooooo I guess even oakland has finally realized moneyball is bs

  17. Johan Iz My Brohan says:

Jorge and Joba are definitely communicating better.

  18. Little Bill says:

So the Yankees take their 3rd best starter out of the rotation and put him in the bullpen to pitch the 7th inning? Hughes is the heir apparent to Mo and Joba is the heir apparent to Hughes. It’s a joke! Mitre and Igawa starting meaningful games in September? What a joke.

    • Chris says:

When did they take their third best starter out of the rotation? Isn’t Joba starting tonight, or am I mistaken?

    • Johan Iz My Brohan says:

I agree, I am sort of disgusted. I say screw the innings cap altogether. We NEED Joba in the rotation right now, especially in September.

    • kimonizer says:

I know I am so disgusted at something that hasn’t happened yet and might not ever happen. That is so awful. Those people who haven’t done that thing yet must be so stupid for doing it. Oh wait…..

  19. Manimal says:

I don’t have a good feeling about this game. Joba better keep them to 1 run for another 6 innings.

  20. Salty Buggah says:

He has a perfect game through 2 with 4 K’s

    /Trying to jinx

    • Chris says:

I can’t remember the last time the Yankees went down in order the first two innings with 4Ks.

Wait, now I remember. It was yesterday.

  21. cjc says:

oh no heyman is pissing off the mlb network guys by questioning Thome as a compiler and not a HOF hilarious yeah you tell em Jon

  22. Riddering says:

I would like for Kay to start harping on Anderson’s perfect game very soon.

    • Salty Buggah says:

Yea cant wait. He’s always saying that for the Yanks pitchers but never for the opponents’

      • Riddering says:

Agreed. He can’t shut up about no hitters for the Yanks side but when opposing pitchers are working on one all of a sudden he’s got to talk about ketchup or fans in the stadium.

  23. Salty Buggah says:

Hopefully we get him the 2nd time through.

  24. pat says:

    OO me like 1-2-3 innings.

  25. Sam P. says:

Seems like Joba is working quickly so far? Good to see him establish a quick rhythm and not really labor on the mound.

  26. Salty Buggah says:

nice little 10 pitch inning and 7 were strikes. See Joba, this is what happens you throw strikes.

  27. cjc says:

    take that no hitter what

  28. Johan Iz My Brohan says:

    Perfect Game Ended

    Cano has been superhuman lately.

  29. Jake says:

    Lazy Lazy Cano…

  30. Salty Buggah says:

Melky, Swish, Jeter, and A-rod are due for HRs

  31. Salty Buggah says:

    no DP Melky

  32. Johan Iz My Brohan says:

Melky McClutch better show up tonight!

  33. Accent Shallow says:

Are we getting Good Melky back?

  34. Salty Buggah says:

    Nice Melky! Cmon Jeter…no K!

  35. Johan Iz My Brohan says:

Cano and Cabrera, the lazy dominican boys trying to start the offensive barrage!

  36. Johan Iz My Brohan says:

    JETER!

  37. Salty Buggah says:

nice Jete! OK Johnny no DP

  38. Manimal says:

    Right in the ass cheek.

  39. Jake says:

Why is Melky reading the Post in the dugout??

  40. pat says:

    bahah o-dog.

  41. pat says:

I think I would really enjoy a booth of Singleton, Cone or Leiter and as the X factor.. Walt Frasier. That would be awesome.

  42. Accent Shallow says:

    DFA-Rod

  43. Accent Shallow says:

This Chamberlain fellow is a pretty good pitcher.

    • Salty Buggah says:

Huh? It’s the 8th inning yet though so he must suck! He only is good in the 8th. And he’s only throwing 93-94 now.

    • Johan Iz My Brohan says:

So what? He is 10x more valuable in the bullpen. One day he will be the setup man for the heir apparent in Phil Hughes!!!

  44. Salty Buggah says:

nice 11 pitch inning Joba, now just hold them there. Cmon Offense, score a couple more now.

  45. Manimal says:

haha I like that Subway commercial

    • whozat says:

is it the CC Johan one?

      • Manimal says:

Yeah, first time Ive seen it(I’m out of market)

        • whozat says:

Yeah, I saw it for the first time last weekend; I went back to NY to go to some games on Sat/Sun (time-release father’s day present) and I saw it while watching Friday’s game on TV with my Dad.

  46. pat says:

51 pitches through 4… nawt too bad.

    • Salty Buggah says:

Yea and 17 of those came in the 1st. Only 34 in the 3 innings since. Let’s hope he keeps it up.

  47. Salty Buggah says:

    BAL 1
    BOS 0

    Top 4th

  48. Andy In Sunny Daytona says:

Anderson should be getting sleepy after that water.

  49. whozat says:

    That was annoying.

  50. Accent Shallow says:

Come on, Joba. It’s not like you need to be terribly careful with Ryan Sweeney.

  51. Johan Iz My Brohan says:

Walk, it’s ok Barton is up now

    DP!

  52. Salty Buggah says:

Cmon Blue Jays…freaking passed ball allowed a sac fly for them and tied the game

  53. The Artist says:

I have a feeling Billy Beane just made another one of his good trades, once again with the Cards (As with Mulder).

He just got their 1st, 2nd and Supplemental Round picks from last year for 2 months of Matt Holiday in a year that he’s not in contention.

  54. Johan Iz My Brohan says:

What the hell was that, Joba suddenly just gave up 2 walks?

    Am I missing something here?

  55. Dela G says:

    cmon yankees

  56. Nady Nation says:

    Posada bashing in 3,2,1…

  57. cjc says:

cruising than walk walk wp I hate this game

  58. The Artist says:

Has there been a game this week where Posada DIDN’T let a pitch (or two or three) go between his legs with runners on base?

Seems to happen every night lately.

  59. Salty Buggah says:

cmon Joba, get out of this…one k, then any out.

    • zs190 says:

He’s definitely trying, 3 96-mph fastballs to Ellis, reaching back a bit to try to strike him out here.

  60. Dela G says:

    nice K JOBA!

  61. Riddering says:

Damn, I love Joba. Crazy fool that he is.

  62. Manimal says:

A new form of emotion for joba? Pounding his chest like an ape and screaming like tarzan?

  63. The Artist says:

    JOBA THE HOUSE!!!!

  64. pat says:

Dass right we be fistpumpin, bitch.

  65. Evan says:

Big escape from Joba. Me likey.

  66. Manimal says:

    Its the 5th inning…

  67. Steve in PDX says:

    put him in the bullpen

  68. Salty Buggah says:

    JOBA! nice!

  69. Little Bill says:

Don’t get too excited people. Joba will soon be relegated to pitching the 7th inning. Joba for the 7th, Hughes for the 8th, Mo for the 9th. Joba will be the 8th inning guy in a couple years and Hughes will be the closer. I just don’t know how Brian Cashman can look CC Sabathia in the eye and tell him that he’s taking a talent like Joba out of the starting rotation.

    • Riddering says:

We don’t need no stinkin’ rotation! Not with our bullpen.

      Pen >>>>>>> Rotation.

  70. Jake says:

    Joba no like contact!!!11!!!1

  71. Johan Iz My Brohan says:

See THAT is an ace in the making right there. He gets into a little jam and then promptly strikes out the next two batters.

  72. Manimal says:

Yankees now have 3 starters with ERA’s under 4.

  73. Dela G says:

Hey the YES gun is working today!

  74. Dela G says:

JOBA IS IN EFFING BEAST MODE

  75. pat says:

    Insane bounce.

  76. Andy In Sunny Daytona says:

Gardner would have had a double.

  77. Manimal says:

Anderson is going to be doing PFP’s for quite a while after this game.

  78. Salty Buggah says:

    no DP Jeter…

    You quiero tack-on runs

  79. Salty Buggah says:

OK, as long as its not a DP jete…now no DP Johnny

  80. Salty Buggah says:

    In Play, run(s)!

  81. pat says:

The 2009 New York Yankees; We’re gonna Fielders Choice the Fuck Outta you.

  82. Nady Nation says:

Penny just gritted his way through 5 innings of 1 run ball. Seems like the rumored Penny/Smoak swap could be back on the table.

  83. Dela G says:

thanks damon for another FC run!

    now for tex!

  84. Salty Buggah says:

See Swisha haters. Walks are GOOD! It led to a run there

  85. Dela G says:

my god anderson can’t field worth shit

  86. Zach says:

    is he OCD?

  87. Accent Shallow says:

Did a fastball right down Broadway to O-Cab get called a ball?

  88. pat says:

The boys are havin a good old time with Anderson.

  89. Dorian says:

What the hell is wrong with this guy?

  90. Johan Iz My Brohan says:

Bergensen is mailing it in to help the Sox win. Geez

  91. Dela G says:

what the hell is anderson doing?

  92. Nady Nation says:

Gotta love Mess enjoying a brew while at the game with his kids.

    • pat says:

Dude that was like a glass of wine or something. I think Mark Messier drinks wine spritzers.

      • Nady Nation says:

Hmmmm. Looked like one of the tiny 12 oz. cups of Bud Light to me.

        • pat says:

Well it is certainly possible that Mess has gigantic paws that made it look like a wine glass. Eh, nevertheless Messier is the Man.

  93. Salty Buggah says:

Sweet, nice Joba! Now Joba for the 7th!

  94. Manimal says:

Who makes you nervous the most, Abreu approaching the wall, Damon throwing a ball, or Swisher leaping for a ball.

  95. Johan Iz My Brohan says:

    Could Joba go 8 today?

  96. Dela G says:

    messier is a class act

  97. Andy In Sunny Daytona says:

It must be Douchbag night at the stadium.

  98. Riddering says:

A-ROD BLINDS THE OUTFIELD WITH HIS BALLS.

  99. zs190 says:

Dang, 2 bad plays in an inning for Aubrey Huff allows Sox to score another run.

  100. Zach says:

    Yankees <3 RBI FC

  101. Manimal says:

Scoring runs with out HR’s. Me likey.

  102. Dela G says:

AROD MAKES REGULAR PEOPLE GO BLIND!

  103. Salty Buggah says:

    That works.

  104. Yankees_Universe says:

Has M.Kay not seen enough opposite field hits in his career? Every time some one hits the ball other way he says “nice piece of hitting”…today he just added Outstanding for Jorge ground out to second.

    • Jake says:

It was because he was moving the runner over.

      • Yankees_Universe says:

I know that but isn’t the opposite field hitting also the part of hitters arsenal? How come everytime some one hits opposite field is a nice piece of hitting?

I know he helped the runner move but to call any out outstanding is just too much.

        • Zach says:

it’s not like every batter can do it. we always criticized giambi for pulling everything, but opposing teams put the shift on Tex too

        • Jake says:

I haven’t noticed him do it all the time, but in that case it was a nice piece of hitting. Certainly it’s not something every hitter can do i.e Giambi who got slaughtered by the shift because he was a dead pull hitter.

    • Dorian says:

I am actually very big on guys approach at the plate also. During the middle of June NOBODY was taking the ball the other way. The whole game against John Lannan guys were swinging from their heels.

  105. Accent Shallow says:

    What a ricochet.

  106. Ivan says:

    Yankees playing good baseball

  107. Accent Shallow says:

Anderson has a nice breaking ball, huh?

  108. Andy In Sunny Daytona says:

Semi-funny story. I have a 14-year old cousin in New Hampshire who is a pretty promising pitcher. His entire immediate family are Red Sox fans. Big time. I have them convinced that I have a friend of friend who is Yankee scout in the New England area, and I have tipped the scout off about him. I keep saying that whenever the Yanks pick him, they will all have to become Yankee fans. They are worried. I do not have a bright family.

  109. Zach says:

    Penny, 6IP, 1R, 0ER
    fools gold

    • Tom Zig says:

Expect Peter Gammons to bang his chest tomorrow on how brilliant the Brad Penny signing was and how he is now the “stopper”

  110. Tom Zig says:

Really the dropped pop up game counts as a yankee classic?

  111. Accent Shallow says:

That was a terrifying routine fly ball.

    Thanks Johnny.

  112. Dorian says:

    Joba’s gonna go 8. Outstanding.

  113. Tom Zig says:

This Brett Anderson fellow seems kind of strange

  114. Salty Buggah says:

    Joba for the 8th!!!!!!!!!!

  115. Accent Shallow says:

He has 93 pitches. Will we see Joba pitch the eighth for only the second time in his starting career?

  116. Mike bk says:

nice to see joba with back to back starts with length. assume he is done now? or do they send him back to start the 8th since he is only at 93 pitches?

  117. Dela G says:

wow this is the best joba start i’ve ever seen

  118. Joba to the 8th?!

  119. Andy In Sunny Daytona says:

I wonder if the Douche Twins took off their sunglasses for “God Bless America”?

  120. Riddering says:

    Joba to the 8th!

  121. AndrewYF says:

They won’t have Joba go 8. This has been a really good outing for him. It would sorta ruin a lot if he goes out there and gets shelled. Whereas the upside of him pitching the 8th is not that great.

    • The Artist says:

No, I disagree. You can’t think that negative. He’s on a 100 pitch count. You could let him face the first batter or two. If they get on, you call in Ace or Coke.

  122. Tom Zig says:

Looks like we are gonna get another one of those comeback victories.

  123. Teix is the Man says:

    Take that Francesa!

  124. Zach says:

does 4-1 still count as a pitching duel?

  125. The Artist says:

    93 pitches.

Send Joba out for a batter or two in the 8th?

  126. Andy In Sunny Daytona says:

    Melky hates RAB!

  127. Good Melky tonight!

  128. Paul O’Neill was never happy.

    • The Artist says:

Tell me about it. He grew on me after a while, but I really couldn’t stand his crybaby act when he first got here.

Liked him more when I realized most of it was directed at himself, and he grew up a lot after seeing some of his tantrums on tape.

  129. Salty Buggah says:

nice little day for Melky…no DP Johnny!

    We need D-rob/Melancon/Bruney pitching today

  130. Zach says:

    grace and balance melky lacks

  131. Accent Shallow says:

    Melky is an adventurous baserunner.

  132. Dela G says:

    oh boy i love melky

  133. Salty Buggah says:

    bad Johnny!

  134. whozat says:

    He fouled that?

  135. Salty Buggah says:

    pfft passed the baton!

  136. whozat says:

I’d love a little more insurance right here, make it not-a-save-situation

    • whozat says:

or, you know, “make it a non-save situation” if I wanted to avoid phrasing it as awkwardly as possible.

    • Johan Iz My Brohan says:

Either way Girardi will end up putting Hughes in……….

    • Jose says:

So you are opposed to Mariano being able to collect a useless metric? You don’t want to unnecessarily use a pitcher coming off shoulder surgery? You’d rather the rest of the bullpen get work in to avoid staying rusty?

  137. Riddering says:

Hahahaha. This is the best since Melky’s double got cut short due to him tumbling.

  138. Tom Zig says:

An “unclutch” homerun by a-rod would be pretty nice right now.

  139. Mike bk says:

tack some on a-rod so melancon and d-rob can work and the main guys get another day off.

  140. Is Michael Kay serious right now? Is he actually asking why ballplayers want to spend more time with their families? This is almost as bad as asking the Army AD how good the gifts for his daughter from Dusty Baker were.

  141. Zach says:

    ouch

  142. Mike bk says:

pitching duel in Toronto…2-2 top 9.
    halladay 8 1/3, garza 8 so far

  143. Dela G says:

man alex has struck out 2 times when he needed to drive in runs

not complaining, but a yuck day for him

    • Salty Buggah says:

yea but we had the lead each time so he didnt feel like padding his stats…He only hits when we’re down one or tied

      • Riddering says:

In the off-season, he worked with the coaches to adjust his stat-padding method to compensate for the fan backlash.

    • Dela G says:

      you guys are so right

  144. Salty Buggah says:

damn! Oh well, Joba for another batter or 2 then D-rob…Im guessing Girardi puts in Ace or Coke though

  145. The Artist says:

    “Roy Halladay Rumors: Friday
By Ben Nicholson-Smith [July 24 at 7:46pm CST]

7:46pm: Bob Elliot of The Toronto Sun reports that only the Phillies and Yankees have scouts watching Halladay tonight.”

    http://www.mlbtraderumors.com/.....day-2.html

First thought is that the Yanks could simply be doing some advance scouting, since he’s on their upcoming schedule. Yanks face the Blue Jays August 4-5, and then again August 10-12. Halladay should be penciled in for the 4th, barring a deal.

    Meaningless.

  146. Accent Shallow says:

Four terrible pitches to a terrible hitter. Maybe it’s time to yank Joba?

  147. Salty Buggah says:

    I hate leadoff walks…

  148. Dela G says:

oh well, time to take out joba

  149. Accent Shallow says:

Well, that’s a minor stain on an otherwise excellent start. Let’s hope the pen can lock it down.

  150. AndrewYF says:

    Should have kept him out.

  151. Johan Iz My Brohan says:

I don’t feel comfortable right now with Coke in there. He’s been real lucky his last few outings.

  152. Stryker says:

why does girardi insist on going to the same 3 relievers for what seems to be every game? what’s the point of having melancon here if he’s not going to get innings?

  153. Jose says:

The Yankee front office ruined Joba. Look how terrible he was in the 8th because of them. He had a 2007 ERA+ of 1192, why can’t he replicate that? I’ll be the first to say he should be traded for a winner like Bronson Arroyo.

  154. Pasqua says:

Hey, technically he didn’t pitch the 8th. That’s one more inning for down the line, baby!

[I hate that we have to start counting down.]

  155. Salty Buggah says:

    cmon Cokie.

  156. Accent Shallow says:

    Sit down, Nomar. You’re done.

  157. Dela G says:

    PHIL COKE PUMPS NOMAAAAAAAHHH

  158. Johan Iz My Brohan says:

    DP oppurtunity!

  159. AndrewYF says:

Man, Yankee fans really don’t like No-mah…

  160. Salty Buggah says:

    huge K there

  161. Accent Shallow says:

    My heart stopped there. Sheesh.

    One more.

  162. AndrewYF says:

I hate the YES camera sometimes. The way it rose, I thought it was gone for sure, then I saw Swisher.

  163. Dela G says:

    I LOVE COKE

  164. Man, Nomar was DIRTY with Boston.

    • Johan Iz My Brohan says:

      Fenway product, nothing more.
