• whozat

It’s cool, they’ll just have to come back in the top of the ninth after bruney gives up three runs, on either a 3-run jack or a walk and then a bases-clearing double.

  • Dave

Plz return to form immediately, k thx.

  • Mikebk

this is his shot to start getting his job back.

    • Accent Shallow

      That was a good start.

  • BigBlueAL

You need to add a few more ? to Bruney.

  • Jose

    This should be an adventure.

  • mko

If I were managing this game I would go to Mo now and replace him in the 9th depending on his pitch count.
No idea why you would save him for later when there might be no later if the weaker pitcher screws it up…

  • Accent Shallow

It’s odd how Hughes’ success out of the pen is based almost all on his fastball — it seems that he either misses with the curve, or it gets hit.

    • whozat

      a) The success of most relief pitchers is based on the fastball.
      b) He also throws the slider a fair amount.

      • billbybob

He doesn’t throw his slider at all. He occasionally throws a cutter, which might look like a slider.

      • Joe R

His curve turned into a slurve.

  • beware of Michael Kay in developing No Hitters

heaven forbid girardi not wear out the arms of coke/ace/hughes!

  • Brazilian Yankee

This is one crazy move. Let’s hope it doesn’t blow up on Joe’s face.

    • GaryBoof

why not just go to mo for the 5 out save, i dont get it…either leave bruney in or go with mo in the first place..another head scratching move from GI joe

  • Bob Stone

What’s it gonna be Bruney – K’s or homers?

  • Salty Buggah

OK everyone, cross your fingers, and anything else you can cross.

  • Grandma Karkan

    wham.

  • Bob Stone

    Phew!

  • Mikebk

big K for bruney and now MO

  • Dela G

wow that strikeout made the bat leave his hand

  • Johan Iz My Brohan

    Bruney good so far.

  • Scooter

I don’t understand this at all.
If you pull Hughes, you go to Mo and lock it down

Talk about a leap of faith

Not sure why you throw the curve to Barton (hitting .121) who was late on every FB Hughes threw

    • whozat

      It was a weird choice.

I mean, Barton is a better hitter than that, but still…he looked overmatched. Hughes tried to get cute.

I worry that he’s starting to think he has to K everyone, which will carry over into his starting pitching. I also worry about his secondary stuff. Oh well, I guess.

      • Zach

there’s also a theory that major league hitters can time up a fastball, he already saw 4 in that AB but whatever, i blame posada

  • Salty Buggah

Money K there but one more out first…

  • whozat

So, wait…it was those four pitches that Mo couldn’t be allowed to throw?

  • Brazilian Yankee

Damn, that FB couldn’t be anymore down the middle… but I’ll take the strikeout!

    • Scooter

Bruney at 93 without movement – that gets smoked

At 96 with that explosive movement in on Ellis – that’s harsh – esp after the two money sliders. As Leiter calls it, the ol’ Scissor effect

  • Bob Stone

Man – I’d love to see what Girardi does at the tables in Vegas

  • BigBlueAL

This is so idiotic. Either bring in Mo for the 5 out save or not til the 9th. Really is facing 1 extra batter gonna injure him or something????

  • Grandma Karkan

I don’t get the point of not bringing in Mo for 5 outs, but instead for 4, especially if Bruney only threw 5 pitches…

  • Jersey

We would have been screaming bloody murder if Bruney blew that, but props to Girardi for letting Bruney justify his faith in that spot.

  • Mikebk

i dont get that set of moves. if you want to go to bruney that’s one thing, but you either have the confidence in him to get 2 outs or u dont and if u dont why put him in at all?

  • Riddering

Bruney’s balls just tripled in size.

  • Salty Buggah

    Cmon Mo, one out here

  • Ant

    How retarded.

    Shoulda been:

Mo for the last two out in the 8th

    Bruney for the 9th

If girardi trusts Bruney to get that out, he should most certainly trust him in the 9th. ughhhhhhhhhhhhhhh why are managers so logically challenged.

    • Tony

      What?

      • Ant

        What dont you understand?

That out that Bruney was aloud to get was ALOT more imporant then if he was to start the 9th inning with no one on. So in a huge spot in the game you go to your BEST reliever not to someone just because thats his role.

    • Mikebk

that would NEVER happen. bruney for the 2 then mo the 9th was the only other option. he is not pulling mo for bruney unless the yanks tacked on like 5 runs in the 8th, but even then its a save for mo.

      • http://leegrantphotography.files.wordpress.com/2009/04/madmax.jpg gxpanos

        You’re missing the point.

We know it’d never happen, and that’s what makes us angry. Because waiting to put Mo in with two on and one out with a two run lead is illogical.

  • beware of Michael Kay in developing No Hitters

Joe Girardi trusts 5 people in this world: mariano rivera, phil hughes, phil coke, al aceves, and his wife. That’s it. No no. That’s it.

    • Salty Buggah

Well he did put in a struggling fly-ball pitcher with runners on 2nd and 3rd with 1 out, that’s having faith.

      • beware of Michael Kay in developing No Hitters

and then, after a strike out, he pulled him out immediately. that’s not faith.

        • Jersey

Right, but…didn’t he put him in there first…?

          • Salty Buggah

exactly and quite frankly, that 1st out was more important than the 2nd because a sac fly was possible and Bruney got a K. Mo could have gotten a K but a GB/Fly ball gets another run in.

        • Moshe Mandel

Pulling someone in favor of the grea6test reliever ever does not indicate a lack of faith. He trusts Hughes and has pulled him for Mo in a less tenuous spot.

  • Dela G

    too much over managing here

  • Grandma Karkan

And now nobody can second guess the switches

    • Jose

      People will…

    • Mikebk

so the argument is because he got away with it today it must have been the right set of moves?

      • Zach

is it any different than Jeter saying it was ok for him to attempt to steal 3rd in the first inning with 0 outs because he was asfe?

        • Zach

because he was safe, even though he was called out

        • Mikebk

zach ur directing that one at the wrong dude.

          • Zach

            wrong button

            • Mikebk

its cool and i agree with you. just cause you get away with it doesnt make it the right move. you either have faith in bruney or u dont. if u want him there with one out let him get the second too and mo the 9th.

  • E-ROC

Girardi plays to matchups too much.

  • Salty Buggah

    MO >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>Money

  • http://www.facebook.com/dougchu Doug

All glory, laud, and honor to Mo, our Redeemer King.

  • BigBlueAL

Im still flabbergasted by the way Girardi handled the inning. This whole Mo can only get 4 outs but not 5 outs thing is ridiculous.

Oh and thats right I used the word flabbergasted!!!! LOL

    • Moshe Mandel

Flabbergasted? He has said on may occasions that he will go to Mo for 4 but not 5. The second Barton’s ball landed I knew we were seeing Bruney for 1 and Mo for the rest. To be honest, I have no problem with it. If they want to protect Mo, they need to draw the line somewhere, and they have determined that 4 outs is as far as they want to push him.

      • Jersey

Plus Nomar is still a better hitter than Barton, which also shouldn’t be discounted.

      • BigBlueAL

No yeah I know that but that still to me is so stupid. The fact that Girardi has said it all along and sticks to it doesnt make it any more logical.

        • Moshe Mandel

He is an aging closer who is very important to this club. I get setting limits on his usage- it keeps you from overusing him. Are there better ways? Maybe. But it isn’t something that gets me too bothered.

          • BigBlueAL

Sure he should have limits but in a game like today when he is already probably warmed up and ready yet you bring in another pitcher to get 1 more out just because of this arbitrary number you put on a limit of outs for Mo to get to me is ridiculous.

Id rather have something like if he does go more than an inning he is 100% not available for the next day or only use him for more than an inning a certain amount of times per month or something. But what happened today just looks stupid.

  • ledavidisrael

    Confusing

  • Cokie

Nice. Joe with the full wind up ass slap.

  • http://www.puristbleedspinstripes.com Rebecca-Optimist Prime

I’d love for the Yankees to tack on a couple more runs here…

  • beware of Michael Kay in developing No Hitters

One day, Joe Girardi will see Mark Melancon in the clubhouse. He will likely think to himself, “ah, we have a new bat boy.” Then he will go back into his office and dream of phil hughes and alfredo aceves…

    • Zach

yeah melancon should definately be in this 2 run game

      • beware of Michael Kay in developing No Hitters

or in a 5 run game obviously

        • Zach

the only game they had a 5 run lead late since the break was on the 24th. they scored 4 runs in the bottom of the 8th, and the top of the 9th was given to DRob, so you’re arguing Melancon should have gotten that 1 inning over DRob?

          • beware of Michael Kay in developing No Hitters

Girardi said after brett gardner went on the DL that he didn’t want to bring up austin jackson because he would sit on the bench and he wasn’t sure that made a lot of sense. I agree. Bringing up Melancon so that he can have one opportunity to pitch in over two weeks cuts against the a-jax logic. Melancon in a two run game right now? Maybe not. But to consistently leave pro-9th inning bullpen opportunities to a cast of three screams a lack of trust in everyone else and scott proctorizes the trusted few so that come playoff time, they won’t be nearly as effective.

            • Zach

so you agree he shouldnt be used in close games, yet we’ve only had 1 late inning of an un-close game and it was given to Drob. so you’re complaining about 1 inning.

as for scott proctoring the four
-Mo always gets his 70 innings
-Hughes is averagin 10 IP/month as a reliever, if that was an entire year he’d have around 60, not high at all for a set up man.
-Aceves is getting used how a majority of people want him to, in that ramiro mendoza role
-Coke averages less than an inning per appearance, hes our only lefty right now so he has to be in alot of games for 1-2 batters, when Marte returns his role will go down

  • Bob Stone

Mo bless Mo – Waht an out!!!

  • Salty Buggah

give me 2 more runs and Melancon!

  • Jersey

6-2 in Boston, going to the bottom of the 9th.

  • Salty Buggah

If Jorgie can juice one, it would be nice and would be appreciated by Melancon.

    • zs190

There is absolutely 0 chance that Mo doesn’t come out for the 9th, even if we score 10 runs this inning.

      • Salty Buggah

well, if we score 10, I think Mo will come out but I see your point

        • zs190

It’s a save opportunity no matter how many we score and Joe doesn’t take Mo out during a save opportunity. We’ve seen Joe do this before, get 1 out in the 8th and then we score like 4 to be up by about 6 runs and he sent Mo out anyways. Ben was mad about it but Joe definitely plays by the book in these situations.

          • Salty Buggah

Yea I know its a save opportunity and that Joe didnt take out mo before when we broke through in the 8th. But 10 runs, I think might be enough to take him out. Anything less, probably not.

          • Jose

Against Baltimore on May 20th. Mo came in the top of the 8th with 2 outs and a score of 5-3. Yankees scored 6 runs to make it 11-3 in the bottom of the 8th. Mo still came out in the top of 9th with an 8 run lead. He then allowed a home run and the game finished with a score of 11-4 and he got a save.

  • zs190

You know, Trey Hillman did this with Soaria last week and got blasted by the bloggers when the 8th inning guy blew it. Is it in the book that closers can get 4 outs but not 5 outs? I’m confused because it’s been repeated often and I’m not sure why.

    • Zach

and francona used Saito during a tie game at home in the top of the 9th, he walked 3 guys and gave up a hit and a run, and they lost the game.

      • Salty Buggah

That’s a good thing for us.

    • http://leegrantphotography.files.wordpress.com/2009/04/madmax.jpg gxpanos

Did what? Pitched Soria in a tight spot in the 8th?

If that’s what happened, the bloggers blasted Hillman unfairly. Hillman should be given a friggin’ raise for that move. The 8th inning guy is more likely to blow it in the 8th with men on than in the ninth with a clean slate (as are all pitchers).

      • Salty Buggah

No no, he DIDNT put in Soria because it wasnt the 9th.

      • zs190

No, he got blasted because he wouldn’t put Soria for 5 outs and said he would only use him for 4 outs.

        • zs190

For what it’s worth the next day he backtracked on that and said he didn’t want to risk Soria for 4 outs and ended up losing another game, that was the Rays series when they got swept despite leading in the 8th several games.

This week after getting blasted, he decided to ask Soria to go 6 outs, I don’t really understand Trey Hillman.

          • http://leegrantphotography.files.wordpress.com/2009/04/madmax.jpg gxpanos

            Oh, my bad. Misunderstood.

            Corrected verdict: Hillman’s an idiot!

  • Jersey

    One more out in Boston…

    • Jersey

John Smoltz improves to 5-0! oh wait..

        • Salty Buggah

  • Mikebk

big news maybe for the dodgers.

cliff lee and victor to the dodgers for loney a young starter and prospects according to mlbtr. that will make the phils desperate for halladay if it happens.

    • http://www.puristbleedspinstripes.com Rebecca-Optimist Prime

      ho shit

    • Bob Stone

      Wow! Big trade!!

      • Mikebk

hasnt happened yet…just serious discussions says rosenthal

    • Mikebk

if they do it without giving up billingsley or kershaw they are the favorites in the nl without a doubt.

      • Scooter

Supposedly the Indians turned down I Steal Laptops for Martinez, and were asking a pretty high price for Lee

Put ’em in a package, and I don’t see how either Kershaw or Billingsley don’t head to Cleveland with Loney

Lee was supposed to be the Philly backup plan for Halladay. Not anymore I guess

      • Mike Pop

If they don’t give up one of them, Colettie is some kind of genious. Shapiro may be too smart for that.

Who else could be, James McDonald and like 2 other guys? They(Indians) need to get Kershaw or Bills back.

      • Zach

how big of an improvement is replacing billingsley or kershaw with lee? lee would give them more of a workhorse than kershaw, which would help that bullpen get more rest.

        • Mikebk

i dont see it as an overall upgrade if you are replacing kershaw and loney w lee and v-mart.

kershaw has an era under 3 at 21 and since may his era is around 2.

          • Zach

Martinez is an upgrade over Loney.
Well Lee’s era is 3.17 in the AL and Kershaw is average like 5.5 IP/S, Lee is basically averaging 7 IP/S. Kershaw is only going to get better in years ahead too

    • Bob Stone

Screws up the BoSox too – They were trying to get Victor.

      • Zach

        and tampa

    • Faiaz

DAMNIT!!!!!! Not to get too ahead of myself but this is cause for concern WHEN we make it to the series.

    • Salty Buggah

Holy fuck! Victor and Cliff Lee???!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Oh my Mo! DAYUM! They are going to mash in the NL!

    • Jose

That could be a huge pickup for the Dodgers.

    • Bob Stone

It’s only a rumor – Supposedly just serious discussions with lots of obstacles. From the way you framed your comment, it sounded almost like a done deal. It’s not even close.

      • Mikebk

not my fault if u read what u want. i said MAYBE. and IF it happens.

        • Bob Stone

You did say maybe but you started the comment with “ig news”- which it isn’t yet. It’s not news at all.

          • Mikebk

didnt realize if u read big news u cant comprehend the rest. cause i know you are not saying if it happens then it isnt big news.

            • Bob Stone

              Semantics. Interpretation. Truce. Peace.

      • Mikebk

also the serious obstacles was an update of the story where they started to name potential names

      • Scooter

Good point – if I were Shapiro, I’d call Theo back and ask about Bucholz AND Masterson (and Lars?) for VMart… and call the Phillies back regarding Lee.

        • Zach

Masterson cant get lefties out, he’s a reliever with an ERA around 4.75

      • Mike Pop

        Bob’s stoned.

    • Salty Buggah

If that happens, Dodgers are the clear favorites in all of baseball to win it all.

      • Zach

definately. and with broxton closing it out? 70K in 45IP, damn. as long as his toe holds up

    • http://leegrantphotography.files.wordpress.com/2009/04/madmax.jpg gxpanos

This sounds fishy. Why would Cleveland part with BOTH guys for three prospects/players instead of getting 2-3 prospects for each? They wouldnt be maximizing their return. Plus Loney’s not really that good. Dude’s slugging under .400 as a 1B.

BUT. If it’s Kershaw in the deal, then I do this REAL quick if I’m Shapiro. I just don’t think LA would part with him.

      • Mikebk

could be a ploy by cleveland to drive up the prices on lee and v-mart with others.

        • http://leegrantphotography.files.wordpress.com/2009/04/madmax.jpg gxpanos

          Yep.

      • Jersey

I agree. I don’t see the Dodgers getting this kind of absolute, clearly lopsided steal for such a haul.

        • Mikebk

not only is the pitching the problem, but why loney? why not request Kemp or Either at least?

For Lee and V-Mart it should be Billingsley, Either and a couple prospects which doesnt really help the dodgers this year.

          • Zach

they can request all they want, giving up Kemp or Either doesnt help the team at all. Moving one of those two makes Juan Pierre a full time player, and either makes Martin/Loney part time players.
And Lee isnt that big of an upgrade over Lee, plus prospects.

    • Tony

I wouldnt’ trade Loney for Martinez straight up.

      • Mike Pop

If you are speaking from Dodgers side, you’re nuts.

        • Tony

Victor Martinez has gotten massively overrated for some reason. His bat isn’t that great from 1B. He’ll be 31 when next season starts, and he gets paid 5x as much, more when he gets $7 mil next year, and God knows what after that. Loney’s power numbers are down, but I’m not giving up on it after seeing what he has done in the past. He’s also a young 25 and cheap.

Obviously, Lee and the prospects tilt the overall value, but no, I wouldn’t trade Loney for Martinez.

          • Steve H

V-Mart will also get you two #1’s when he leaves as a FA after next year. With the way they Dodgers have drafted, that’s huge.

            • Tony

So you traded a guy that is cost controlled and has a career .812 OPS at 25 years old for one year of a lateral move at his position and 2 low first rounders two years from now? I’m not enticed.

I’m talking only about the Martinez-Loney exchange.

              • Steve H

Not a lateral move. Loney has regressed, his ops the last 2 years is .764. V-Mart is .832 career and at .833 this year, right in line. Also, V-Mart can be a backup catcher to Martin, who needs the rest.

                V-Mart>>>>>>>Loney

                • Tony

I can’t call “regression” on 25 year olds. Joba has regressed too… let’s deal him for someone 6 years older who presents a modest upgrade at 5x the price.

                • Steve H

Ok, let’s not call it regression. Let’s call it he’s been a league average player the last 2 years. V-Mart is a major, major upgrade and significantly increases the Dodgers chance of winning the WS this year, of which they certainly have a chance.

                • Zach

Joba doesnt have the equivilent of 2.5 major league seasons in the bigs.

for three straight years Loney’s AVG, OBP, SLG and OPS have delcined

                • Zach

Should read: Joba hasnt been in the bigs as a starter for 2.5 seasons

                • Tony

Also, let’s not mention the fact that Loney’s numbers are hugely depressed by the home ballpark (and this has been consistent with him). Who knows what Martinez does in LA. He isn’t elite at 1B. That’s not a smart move.

                • Zach

That may be true, but they play 81 games there, if he cant hit there thats not good. Out of all the regulars he’s the worst at home.

                • Steve H

I wouldn’t think Loney, as a non-power hitter would have his numbers depressed by the park. While yes, he performs worse at home, that’s not necessarily a reflection of the park, as much as it may be Loney. He’s a line drive gap hitter, he should perform better at Dodger Stadium as there is more green, bigger gaps, more room for balls to land. HR’s are suppressed at bigger parks, but not singles doubles and triples.

So you’re arguing against empirical evidence? Cool. He hits with power on the road, and doesn’t at home.

Tony, the fact is that Dodgers hitters overall hit more HR’s at home than they do on the road. The fact that the Dodgers in general hit more HR’s at home (in the last 4 full seasons they have) furthers proves my point that Loney’s struggles with power at home are more a reflection of him, and not Dodger Stadium. Since 10-15 players, as a whole, are hitting more HR’s there than they do on the road, this is a much larger and more accurate sample size.

Nice use of the pen today by Girardi.
Even though the A’s are a lousy team, big (and well managed) win today for the Yanks.

    you know whats funny?

Rookie starters are 6-0 (1 ND) against Boston this year, and the ND the kid had 8Ip, 1ER

    • Dela G

      now that is hilarious

      That is kinda funny.

        ok, is ‘interesting fact’ better?

speaking of lee the phils are DISCUSSING him as well according to Andy Martino of the Philly Inquirer

According to those ever anonymous baseball sources they think Lee can be had for Carassco/ Donald and not the Drabek/Browns of the world. IF Shapiro did some BS like that he should be fired immediately, but would also make it more likely the Dodgers could make that kind of combined deal cheaper.

    dodger “update”:

3:50pm: Rosenthal now suggests that the young starter could indeed be one of Billingsley or Kershaw:

“Lee would replace either left-hander Clayton Kershaw or right-hander Chad Billingsley — it is not known which the Dodgers would part with in the package — giving manager Joe Torre the more experienced starter that he covets.”

If you are giving up Bills or Clayton the team is not improving this year and is hurting itself long term.

    • Zach

wow yeah horrible deal if they give up one of those two

      • Mikebk

if you are giving up one of them keep loney and go after Doc, but i still wouldnt especially with Clayton.

        • Zach

yeah good point. if im giving up kershaw or billingsley in a package i’d want Doc in return

    • Tony

LOL is Torre convinces them to start shipping out young studs for decent veterans. I really miss the guy…

      • Mikebk

if that’s the case can we get AJ and prospects for Kershaw…lol.

Remember when he whined for new BP arms to replace the ones he killed every season?
