July 2nd Signing Period Primer

By Mike Axisa

ESPN’s Jorge Arangure Jr. has a post up (behind the Insider wall, unfortunately) updating us on all of the recent international free agent stuff. He says the Yanks have been linked to more players than any other team, mostly because they invite pretty much everyone to work out at their Dominican academy. We know they’ve already come to an agreement with catcher Gary Sanchez for $2.5M, but they’re also interested in outfielders Leonardo Fuentes and Jose Alberto Pena, righthander Cristopher Cabrera and shortstop Daimian Arredondo. The Yanks have also been connected to Cuban defectors Jose Iglesias and Noel Arguelles, a second baseman and a lefty pitcher, respectively. And, of course, they’re in on megaprospect Miguel Sano.

Teams can sign amateurs at least 16 years of age starting tomorrow. Don’t miss my talk with Baseball America’s Ben Badler about what he thinks the Yanks could do. Here’s Ben’s list of the top 25 prospects available this year.

Arangure’s Twitter feed has all that primo info, and it’s not behind any insider walls.

Teix is the Man says:

What are the chances the Yanks nab Sano?

Apparently, it’s a three-team race between the Pirates and Twins, with the Orioles recently entering the fray as the new financial heavy.

I’d say the chances are slim.

Personally, if we don’t get him, I hope the Pirates do. I’d love to have him not land in the AL, and the Pirates need all the help they can get. I pity them.

(Plus, if he goes to the Pirates, he’ll probably end up here at some point, since the Pirates are our farm club now.

My thoughts exactly.

Thomas says:

The Orioles say they will only make a play for Sano, if they can verify his age (I have no idea how they’d do that).

Cut him in half and count the rings.

Ed says:

For a 16 year old, you could probably narrow it down to a few year window by doing an x-ray of his elbow. I believe the growth plates start closing around that age, so if they’re fully closed you can confidently say that he’s a few years older than he claims.

“For a 16 year old, you could probably narrow it down to a few year window by doing an x-ray of his elbow.”

Yeah but dude, I think the question is whether he’s really 16 or maybe, like 18 or 19, not 30. If that test only narrows it down to a “few year window,” it doesn’t do too much good in this situation.

Ed says:

Let’s try this again. The growth plates of an 18 year old look very different from the growth plates of a 16 year old.

If he’s really 18-19, you’ll know. If he’s 17 and claiming 16, you can’t tell.

Yankee1010 says:

I think someone actually already did a bone graph (I think that is what it was) and determined that he is either 16 or 17.

I was reading your comment and was waiting for this point.

Bo says:

if you are truly worried about him being 18 or 19 than you shouldn’t be bidding 4+mill on him.

Dear Mo:

I know I’m not perfect. I try to live as you would want me to. It would be presumptuous of me to ask something of you, oh Mo, but if you could find it in your benevolent heart to teach Bo how to use the reply button correctly, I promise I will do my best to do your will on earth and spread the word of your good news across the world. Mosanna, Mosanna, Mosanna in the highest.

Amen.

My coworkers must think I’m nuts when I just bust out laughing at some of the stuff you post on here. Well done!

Teix is the Man says:

I would feel really bad being outbid by any of those teams. Oh well…

Arangure also says that the “Padres appear favorites to land LHP Edgar Ferreira for bonus of about $1m-$1.5m” but that “Yankees, Braves, Brewers and Marlins also have interest in Ferreira.”

Sam says:

I also heard that we were the favorites to sign that Venezuelan shortstop Sardinas. I’ll look for the link.

Sam says:

Couldn’t find it. My bad.

For those interested, here are a list of some of the more heralded names on the international market (gathered from Baseball America, ESPN’s La Esquina, and Kiley McDaniel)…
Venezuelan SS Luis Sardinas – lanky SS with good hands; Yanks & Red Sox

Sam says:

I give because I love.

Should we add this to the drinking game? I feel like we should.

If we add all of my sayings and memes to the drinking game, way too many people will die. Seriously.

Let’s pick one. My vote is still for “Ty Cobb stabbed a guy.”

My wish list:

Cheslor Cuthbert, 3B, Nicaragua – because that’s an awesome name
Jurickson Profar, RHP/SS, Curacao – ditto
Juan Urbina, LHP, Venezuela – because he’s Ugueth’s kid, and it would allow me to have a new version of my meme about Ty Cobb stabbing a guy
Daniel Sanchez, RHP, Venezuela – because I still want to field a team of nothing but Duncans and Sanchezes

Andy in Sunny Daytona says:

Are there any Melky’s available this year?

Sadly, no.

I think we already have all the Melkys in the Western Hemisphere. Probably Eastern, too.

V says:

Think the Cardinals would give us Chris Duncan, for, say, Hughes?

They have to throw in pitching coach Dave Duncan and RHP prospect Eduardo Sanchez too, or I’m not interested.

Sam says:

Only if we threw in Shelley, Dave likes having one of his kids around but not both, because then the forearm slams turn into rough-stuff and it’s a whole thing.

Tampa Yankee says:

That would defeat the purpose of trying to have a team full of Duncans.

I Remember Celerino Sanchez says:

Germans? Forget it, he’s rolling.

jsbrendog says:

Dead! he’s right. Psychotic, but absolutely right. We gotta take these bastards. Now we could do it with conventional weapons but that could take years and cost millions of lives. No, I think we have to go all out. I think that this situation absolutely requires a really futile and stupid gesture be done on somebody’s part.

And we’re just the guys to do it.

Mr.Jigginz says:

What we really need,is a player named Duncan Sanchez…

Thomas says:

Only, if they toss in Dave, too.

Then, I’d try trading A-Jax, Brackman, and CJ Henry (assuming we still own his rights) to SA for Tim.

Andy in Sunny Daytona says:

We traded CJ Henry to Kansas for Schaffer Hall

Mike bk says:

not quite he might be going to Kentucky now

Tom Zig says:

TSJC:

“Juan Urbina’s Dad poured gasoline on some guys”

Nah, too far removed from the original.

“Juan Urbina’s dad tried to stab some guys.”

Marcus says:

Isn’t more like, “Juan Urbina’s dad tried to hack some guys up”? Ugueth and his henchmen were wielding machetes, after all…

jsbrendog says:

juan urbina’s dad enjoys machetes.

Look, who’s the meme-creating expert here, me, or you? I thought so.

http://ia.media-imdb.com/image.....SY334_.jpg (SFW)

Marcus says:

I definitely cede to you on meme-creation ;)

I’m just trying to be accurate. Don’t want those young, impressionable RABers thinking that Urgueth merely tried to poke a few holes in a guy. It does a disservice to his level of psychopath-ness to leave out the gasoline and machete-wielding, no?

Thomas says:

I believe that is called “Telling the batter hit at your own risk.”

Salty Buggah says:

Thank Mo we already “have” Tony Sanchez in “our” farm system.

And Humberto and Romulo, the Hefty Non-Lefties.

Can’t we just sign all 25?
I keed I keed

jsbrendog says:

everyday i want to click on these tinyurls so bad but i then go NO! I am at work! and must relent.

Tampa Yankee says:

+1… It drives me nuts. These tiny urls do not allow me to check to see they’re SFW beforehand.

Bo says:

Don’t you have to assume the tiny urls on baseball sites linking to baseball stuff are safe? Live a little

jsbrendog says:

you dont have to assume because then youd be wrong. most of them, in fact. are not. i see a lot of youtube videos which is blocked and logged everytime i try to go to a blocked site. its lame, but the less reasons they have to fire me the better.

Tampa Yankee says:

This.

Agreed. New rule, if you post some kind of shortened URL, stick a little (SFW/NSFW) next to it please. I’ll make a more formal announcement later.

Now i’m glad i didnt open the link.

Definite good idea Mike. Privacy at my job is a pretty fluid situation if i’m caught eye-fucking NSFW images.

jsbrendog says:

yeah they’re totally cool with me being on a blog posting comments all day but the nsfw stuff won’t fly.

(Comments wont nest below this level)

Tampa Yankee says:

Yeah same here. I mean half my day is reading this blog and playing FreeCell… err, doing market reearch but that would not fly.

Tampa Yankee says:

I also enjoy following the games during on mlb.com especially on days like today when the Sawx and Beckett are getting rocked by the O’s (5-1 after 4) and when Burrell grounds into a double play with the bases loaded to end the top of the 7th with the Rays down 2-0. But NSFW shit would get me canned.

I really enjoy a nice pair of slacks.

what is this youtube you speak of?

Sorry all, I was away from my computer for a bit… That one is SFW, it’s an old movie clip. Might want to keep your computer volume at a reasonably low level if you don’t have your own office.

Bo says:

This is the type of area where they need to flex their financial muscles. But the economy must not be that bad in baseball if the Padres, Pirates, Twins, etc are throwing millions at 16 yr olds.

Couldn’t BA hire a someone Dominican that sees these kids? All I get from Badler is regurgitation.

Welcome to the modern era of newsmedia.

ColoYank says:

Yeah, regurgimedia.

Reggie C. says:

Somebody always changes his mind the last minute and breaks his verbal promise for more money. Maybe the fact that the Yankees have a long established education and integration system in place for only-Spanish speaking kids could help them nab a kid or 2 at the end.

I’d like to see the Yanks also nab a couple Venezuelans. Montero has worked out pretty well.

Billy says:

they got the best venezualan hitter ramon flores last year. he’s in rookie GCL ball now at age 17

Billy says:

the jose alberto pena guy has talent, not as much as wagner mateo. midlevel guy next up to mateo is pimentel. he was hitting shots out of sight on the video. if we dont get sano we should get pimental and the two cubans. eiyher way we’ll have a good international crop

Billy says:
Bo says:

What guy doesn’t look great taking BP?

Billy says:

u have to see it. it wasnt natural. he hit balls out of sight nonchalontly. check it out on vimeo, there’s also some gary sanchez, jose pena and mateo in there

Don’t take it personal, Billy.

It’s just Bo.

Billy says:

why doesnt sano just sign with us instead of pittsburgh. if he gets to the majors they’ll trade him to the yankees anyway
