I completely agree that people were overreacting to A-Jax with the weird "We're happy about the BA, but not really because of his BABIP, and, oh by the way, where's the goddamned power?" It was a situation where they seemingly just didn't want to be happy with his performance, and I am slightly guilty of it myself.

"While BABIP is somewhat effective measuring luck, that mostly applies to pitchers"

Thank you. Most misused stat on the planet and people draw far bigger conclusions than it was ever intended for.

When a hitter is on a hot streak and is crushing every pitch he sees, his BABIP shoots up. Some fans claim its all just luck, but its not. Conversely, when a pitcher has nothing on his pitches, his BABIP against gets very high. Think Kei Igagwa or Andy Pettitte in the second half of last year.

There's always a certain amount of luck involved with getting Hits, but hard hit balls give fielders less time to react. So 'quality of contact' has to be taken into account on both ends. For that, you have to watch the games.

Not really, his job is calling major league games. He is only required to know about the prospects who make it to the bronx (the vast majority don't). Would it be nice if he had some DotF knowledge - yes; and it would also be nice if he stopped with the ridiculous homerun calls/nicknames.

"Is Kroenke the next reliever to get a shot?"

We'd better hope he isn't. He's walking more than 5 per 9 innings. He's getting by on smoke and mirrors right now.

I understand the usefulness of BABIP as a stat. I do not have a problem with people using it properly and as complimentary evidence to a point. My problems are:

- While BABIP is somewhat effective measuring luck, that mostly applies to pitchers. There are too many variables in hitting for BABIP to be considered a reliable tool to measure a positional prospect. Which leads me to...

-People who want to poopoo A-Jax's breakout performance in AAA focusing on the negative and using BABIP as there only statistical argument to show he won't sustain success. I previously pointed out in a similar discussion that if A-Jax simply starts hitting a HR once in a while (which he's done so far) and converts some of those K's into GO or FO (which he's also done so far) his BABIP would normalize without affecting his other stats (BA, OBP, etc.).

My comment is not meant as an assault, but more of a little jab who were way too worried about the lack of power and batter's eye (the last tools to develop) of a 22 year old in AAA.

BABIP is a useful statistic whether you'd like to believe so or not. The fact that people point it out is because it is a driving factor for his heightened performance this year. I don't understand your assault on the idea of mentioning. It's not (at least it shouldn't be) used to say "Oh my god, Austin Jackson sucks and his season is all luck."

Or maybe this was just an innocent joke on people always mentioning his BABIP and I'm just reading far too deep into it.
