Trade Deadline Spillover Thread

By Mike Axisa

Orlando Cabrera was just shipped to the Twins for ex-Yankee draftee Tyler Ladendorf. Keep the discussion going here.

Update (1:11pm): In far more interesting news, Justin Duchscherer has been scratched from tonight’s rehab start.

Update by Joe (1:57 p.m.): Looks like Victor Martinez to the Red Sox. Will have more when we hear it.

Update by Joe (2:50 p.m.): Justin Masterson and Nick Hagadone in the deal. No Buchholz or Bard. That doesn’t seem like a good haul for a switch-hitting catcher with another year left on his contract.

Russell NY says:

Oh no! The Twins are unbeatable now! Haha. I believe the Red Sox had interest in this guy at one point but they wisely stayed away and waited for Lowrie. Mediocrity.

Charlie says:

wisely? i don’t know about that. lowrie’s hitting in the low .100s and isn’t all that great

Jose says:
Rocky Road Redemption (formerly RAB poster) says:

That’s higher than -1! But lower than 1.

I know math. :-)

Dirt says:

But he’s a Red Sox farm product? You mean he and Pedroia aren’t twins???

charlespoet says:

Bite your tongue. Peter Gammons will haunt you. Lowrie is as good as Ellsbury.

Yeah, I’d much rather have O-Cab than the poo-poo platter of replacement-level shortstops Boston has trotted out there this season if I was a Sox fan.

Of course, if I was a Sox fan I’d have horrible personal hygiene and probably engage in bestiality, so I may not pay much attention to whom my shortstop is, but you get my general point.

JMK says:

Ever been to the Northeast Kingdom in Vermont? Your statement (well the last part, specifically) is remarkably true. I’m still waiting for Gandalf to gallop through a kingdom of trailers, Sawx hats, and toothless smiles.

/Last week living in Vermont
//Will miss the maple syrup though

Holy shit… Jim Duquette is on MLBTV as a special analyst for the trade deadline.

Bo says:

Thats like NBATV hiring Isiah Thomas and Scott Laydon to work the NBA trade deadline.

Jack says:

You know, I would probably watch that.

Also, don’t forget NBC hiring Matt Millen for SNF.

Layden, but yeah.

I did crack up when they hired Matt Millen as a football analyst, though.

Jack says:

Ha! Beat you to it!

Fred says:

What do you guys think of Doug Davis or Jon Garland? Worth a trade?

Mike Pop says:

Nope.

that’s all that needs to be said.

Rocky Road Redemption (formerly RAB poster) says:

Nah, we already have Mitre.

No. They’re both terrible. Not worth whatever Arizona would request for them.

whozat says:

No. It’s been kicked around a lot in here. Search for the names.

Their peripherals kind of suck in the weakest division in baseball

jsbrendog says:

weakest division in baseball is the nl east. giants, rockies, dodghers have very good records.

this is now a misconception as opposed to preivous years. the malrins, in second in the east would be in 4th i believe in the nl west

Dirt says:

I say no, because it cost prospects for somebody who isn’t going to be good at all.

Bangwagon all of these responses.

Dirt says:

What are you a Red Sox fan, you bandwagoner…

Red Sox fans bandwagon.

Yankee fans BANGWAGON.

Dirt says:

I just pictured an Oregon Trail style bangwagon

Dirt says:

Gives a whole new meaning to caulk the wagon and float ;-)

I’d rather go swimming in cat piss for an hour than have Cash trade for one of those guys.

Bruno says:

2 or 3 hours is still a better option then them.

Johan Iz My Brohan says:

Joe Mauer got his guy, he better stay in Minny, which I think he will anyway.

Russell NY says:

MLBTradeRumors: ESPN’s Amy K. Nelson, via Twitter, says the Dodgers acquired catcher Vinny Rottino from the Brewers for pitcher Claudio Vargas.

Nice to see the NY boroughs unite.

Moshe Mandel says:

Duchscherer has been scrapped from his rehab start tonight. Hmm…

Joe R says:

Any word as to why?

Duscherer has an awesome name.

Rocky Road Redemption (formerly RAB poster) says:

The jokes are endless.

Chris says:

So does Duchsherer

Dirt says:

So does Niko Popodopolous

Welcome to “World News Tonight”. Charles Gibson is off tonight, I’m George Stuffinenvelopes.

Russell NY says:

I could not describe how happy I would be if we got Justin D. I would be dancing.

Update (1:11pm): In far more interesting news, Justin Duchscherer has been scratched from tonight’s rehab start.

OH SHIT

Rocky Road Redemption (formerly RAB poster) says:

Why is this OH SHIT worthy?

Dislike Duchscherer? What would he do for the 09′ club?

Mike Pop says:

No, that was an OH SHIT of excitement, not an OH SHIT of dread and loathing.

(Although it may have just been a Duchscherer poop joke. That’s possible too.)

I’m all on board with a Duke buy low acquisition.

Rocky Road Redemption (formerly RAB poster) says:

So what are his numbers. How does he like us.

I really want Duke and Capps, who both fit well with us.

whozat says:

Why would Pittsburgh trade either of them for a price we want to pay?

Duke would likely be a back-end starter in our division, but he’ll be priced like a #2. Capps is their closer, right? And he’s under control for years yet?

Rocky Road Redemption (formerly RAB poster) says:

ecause they’re the Pirates. They’ve become legendary for making crappy deals.

whozat says:

Look at what they’ve done this year.

They’ve executed an excellent fire sale, actually. They’ve gotten back very good value for pretty much everyone.

(Comments wont nest below this level)
Rocky Road Redemption (formerly RAB poster) says:

Hinske was the only guy they didn’t get a good return for, but to be fair, we’re talking about Eric Hinske here. He’s not exactly a gamechanger.

Rocky Road Redemption (formerly RAB poster) says:

It just seemed like we got him for a bag of balls and a song.

Which is why I said that the Hinske deal was the ONLY deal they didn’t get a decent return on.

Maybe the LaRoche deal too… but again, you’re not going to get much for that guy either.

The McLouth, Morgan, Wilson/Snell, and Sanchez deals were pretty solid, though.

Mike bk says:

mcclouth wasnt great…the last two and the morgan deal were good.

The reason I like Duchscherer better than Duke or Capps is precisely because Duchscherer is injured and thus, should have a lower price tag. I’ve got a feeling we wouldn’t like what Pittsburgh would charge us for Duke or Capps.

Rocky Road Redemption (formerly RAB poster) says:

We’d have to wait longer for him, and then there are no gurantees that he’d come back and pitch effectively. He could pull a Wang and have a messed up career.

Rocky Road Redemption (formerly RAB poster) says:

Or should I say a messed up year.

I don’t think Wang is done for the year.

(Comments wont nest below this level)
Bruno says:

Despite the Yanks saying he might miss all of NEXT year as well?

Yeah, expecting Wang any sooner than the 2010 All-Star Break is wishful thinking. He just got cut up two days ago. He’s done for a year.

http://sportsillustrated.cnn.c.....index.html

Rocky Road Redemption (formerly RAB poster) says:

Sorry, scratch the word year at the bottom of my comment and replace with career.

“So what are his numbers.”

baseball-reference.com

“How does he like us.”

Huh?

Rocky Road Redemption (formerly RAB poster) says:

Scratch like and change with fit with.

No idea why I typed like.

How does he fit? Like I said below… He’s an arm, which I think we all agree the Yanks could use, and he has had success at the MLB level as both a reliever and a starter.

(Comments wont nest below this level)

“Dislike Duchscherer?”

Dude, where have you been the last month? Want Duchscherer, not dislike.

“What would he do for the 09? club?”

Come in, in a couple of weeks, and slot in either as a 5th starter candidate or in the bullpen, as he has had success in both roles in his career.

Rocky Road Redemption (formerly RAB poster) says:

I just don’t know anything about him.

Thanks.

I Remember Celerino Sanchez says:

Could mean injury recurrence.

Could mean trade is going to happen and they don’t want to risk an injury.

Hmmmmmmmmmm.

Bruno says:

Hopefully it’s bc we traded for him, and not a setback.

It could be from back issues, which have stunted his rehab twice.

Dela G says:

please god yankees land duke

this guy will be incredible

whozat says:

slow down…let’s set some reasonable expectations here.

This guy will, hopefully, get back in a couple weeks and there’s reason to believe he’d be above average.

Russell NY says:

I am crossing my fingers for this to happen.

Dela G says:

above average is better than mitre right now

Bo says:

Let’s not go crazy. hes coming off an injury here and has barely rehabbed.

We don’t need him to be lights out immediately. We need depth, we can afford to wait for him to round into shape during August.

Chris says:

Not really. Mitre has actually pitched pretty well. The difference between his FIP and ERA is 3.23 (13th out of 483 pitchers with at least 10 IP). That means he’s been very unlucky so far.

It’s totally a tough name, but here’s how you actually spell it:

D-U-C-H-S-C-H-E-R-E-R

Like “Duke-Sher-Er.”

Bruno says:

Am I the only one here that would try to get Rios?

Russell NY says:

I’m guessing yes.

whozat says:

You’re the only one here who thinks that he’d be available for a reasonable price.

The only “reasonable price” for Rios is if we get him for a non-elite prospect AND the Jays send along about 20-30M to cover half of his remaining salary obligations.

whozat says:

yep. And that’ll never happen.

Bruno says:

He’s an upgrade over Gradbrerain CF this year, and would fit in RF next year.

Jeter
Rios
Tex
A-Rod
Posada
Cano
Swisher
Catcher?
A-Jax

Dirt says:

Posada? I know he’s not young, but I’m not sure I would prefer Cervelli or somebody else (Montero won’t be ready yet) to Posada full time yet…

Bruno says:

Olivo isn’t that bad of a stop-gap until Jesus is ready.

Dirt says:

My point, I guess, is that I think Posada is more than a stop gap…and that you don’t need another one that would require money and/or prospects.

(Comments wont nest below this level)
Bruno says:

Matusi’s gone next year. Signing Olivo for 1-2yrs wouldn’t cost more than $3-4m a year. Chump change for the Yanks. Posada at DH.

whozat says:

He is WORSE THAN AVERAGE in RF right now.

He’s an upgrade over Gradbrerain CF this year…

Melky Cabrera – .290/.354/.448 (110+)
Brett Gardner – .275/.354/.400 (99+)
Alex Rios – .265/.322/.423 (96+)

Oh, and both Melky and Gardner are much better defensively in CF than Rios is.

He’s not an upgrade. He’s a DOWNGRADE.

whozat says:

But I’ve HEARD of him!!!

Bruno says:

Ok Ok. I’ve conceded that I was wrong and stupid. No need to shove my foot further down my throat LOL.

Sorry. I type and post fast. That one was in the works before you conceded.

Don’t take it personal, you’re good money.

(Comments wont nest below this level)
Bruno says:

It’s all good. If I can dish it, I better be able to take the heat.

Bruno says:

I’m just sayin he’s worth kicking the tires on. But you’re right, probably over-priced prospect wise.

whozat says:

and contract-wise.

Not near as bad as Wells, but still not that good.

protip: think about what you’d be willing to offer for the guy, and then put yourself in the other GM’s shoes and think about what you do. If the answer isn’t “strongly think about it,” don’t post.

Bruno says:

That’s the thing:
Romnie, Z-Mac, Melky would get me thinking. I would save boatloads of coin, and shifting Wells to RF might help him be a LgAvg hitter again (but probably not).

whozat says:

But that wouldn’t be an offer that Cashman would or should make.

Rios is not an elite hitting RFer, and he’s been worse than average this season.

Romine by himself for Rios+30 mil MAYBE, and that’s something that JP would not do.

I Remember Celerino Sanchez says:

Yup.

Here are Rios’s contract numbers, courtesty of Cot’s (Warning, avert your eyes if you are sensitive to scary images):

10:$9.7M,
11:$12M,
12:$12M,
13:$12.5M,
14:$12.5M,
15:$13.5M club option ($1M buyout)

Plus:
* full no-trade clause, 2009-10
* limited no-trade clause, 2011 – end of deal (may block trades to 6 clubs)

PASS
# 1 year/$4.835M (2008)

Bruno says:

Didn’t realize it was that bad.

whozat says:

Then why not look it up first?

We are lucky to have all this data available to us. Take advantage of it.

(Comments wont nest below this level)

Chris says:

On the flip side, he’s 28 now and has been worth an average of of roughly $12M a year each of his first 6 years in the league (including so far this year).

He’s probably overpaid, but not significantly – especially considering that he can play CF, but hasn’t played there much other than last year because of Vernon Wells.

Think of it this way: Whatever marginal upgrade either Wells or Rios would present over anyone else we have internally (or could add through free agency) is countermanded by the advantage we currently have that we’d be losing by letting the Blue Jays off the hook from those horrid contracts.

One of the best possible things for our divisional strategy is to have our opponents hamstrung by bad contracts that limit their ability to add talent to compete with us.

Rios and Wells hurting the Jays payroll flexibilty >>>>>>>> Rios and Wells being slightly better than Melky, Gardner, AJax, Swisher, or Hinske

Nady Nation says:

What would everyone be willing to give up to land Dookie?

Johan Iz My Brohan says:

Please Cashman get Duch

Bo says:

I’m kinda thinking that the calls from Ny to Sea didnt involve Washburn but involved Felix.

Perhaps, but they probably didn’t amount to much on either end.

We shouldn’t have given up much for Washburn, and we couldn’t possibly give up enough to land Felix (without stupidly gutting our team).

Rob H. says:

haha from MLBTR:

“12:22pm: SI’s Jon Heyman says the Tigers and Red Sox were among the teams inquiring on King Felix.”

The Red Sox weren’t willing to pony up what it needed for Halladay so they think they’d be able to get Felix for the same?

whozat says:

No, I’m sure they heard that Seattle was even bothering to listen on Felix, and put in a call — like any good GM should have. I’m sure the Yanks called too.

Johan Iz My Brohan says:

Felix would cost double the prospects that Roy Halladay would fetch now. I don’t believe this one bit, honestly.

Bruno says:

Theo’s teh genius!!1!

Who says they offered the same package for Halladay and for Felix?

Bo says:

The Sox could offer a major package for Felix if they so desired. So could we.

The Red Sox think they can acquire anyone. Why do I get the feeling that they’ll be inquiring on Pujols next?

Joe says:

From Stark on ESPN:

“When the Yankees called on Jarrod Washburn, Seattle asked for either of the Yankees’ top two position-player prospects — catcher Miguel Montero or outfielder Austin Jackson, ESPN.com’s Jayson Stark reports. The Yankees then made a counterproposal of lesser prospects and never heard back, as Seattle plowed ahead and dealt Washburn to Detroit. ”

Apparently Jesus has a brother we don’t know about…

Mike Pop says:

Wow, that’s bad.

Dela G says:

quality ESPN reporting

Jose says:

Cashman is a genius, offer guys from other teams who have similar names to Yankee players to try and trade for people.

Dela G says:

JMK says:

How does Stark have a job? And with ESPN’s money, don’t they have copyeditors to look through these things?

Chili Davis says:

And apparently the Mariner front office is a place where smoking crack is encouraged. Montero or AJax for Washburn? LOL

whozat says:

Hey, why not ask?

You know the Yanks might be a bit desperate looking to upgrade if the Sox do something big…and Detroit has some pieces that can step in for you right now, which the Yanks don’t/won’t give up.

If you have to wait a year or two for the players to arrive, that means you need more upside. Worst that happens is they say no and you go ahead with Detroit.

Hey, why not ask?

Rule #1 of negotiating: You never get what you don’t ask for.

Mike bk says:

miguel montero is very good catcher for ARIZONA.

I Remember Celerino Sanchez says:

Miguel = Michael
Michael means “Of God”
Some religions look at Jesus as a god
Ergo Miguel Montero is accurate.

/ESPN Brainwashed’d

pete says:

if we could have gotten washburn for miguel montero, it would be pretty much the greatest manegerial move in history

Nady Nation says:

How minimal would the compensation be to land Duke?

whozat says:

Justin Duchserererer or Zach Duke?

Nady Nation says:

Duchscherer (see below).

Mike Pop says:

We can only speculate cause we don’t have inside men or “sources” but I would not think much at all. Dude has been injured, Cash can’t give up anything that great for him.

But, can the Yanks afford it? If they can’t take on 650k for Bannister, can they take on the money left for Duke?

whozat says:

There’s can’t and then there’s don’t want to.

Mike Pop says:

Zach Duke or The Duke (Duchscherer)? (We need to start being more careful to identify these guys clearly, since we’re using the same name for both of them.)

Let’s just call Duchscherer “Dookie” to make it easier.

On second thought…

Nady Nation says:

My bad – meant Duchscherer. Clearly forgot there were 2 Dukes (either truly named or nicknamed) being tied to Yanks rumors.

Rick in Boston says:

Let’s go with Duke for the Pirates pitcher, or Duch for the A’s pitcher (it’s a shortening of the name, so it works).

Bruno says:

If you’re in Boston, you get no vote! (j/k)

But I like The Duke and Duke as a distinction.

Rick in Boston says:

Hey, I’m just here trying to cut down on the percentage of Bostonians who commit bestiality.

Very nice, I LOL’d.

(Comments wont nest below this level)

I hear you. It’s just getting confusing with both of these guys getting discussed in the same thread.

Rob H. says:

MLBTR:
“12:26pm: A Jayson Stark source says the asking price for Gonzalez is “astronomical, three times the asking price on Halladay.”

Well that is good to hear if that is indeed true. I’d be much more worried if the Sox could get Gonzalez than I am if they are able to get V-Mart.

As it should be. Gonzo is a middle of the order bat on the RIGHT side of 30. He’s more valuable than Halladay, both short term and long term.

And thus, http://twitter.com/mlbtraderum.....2954002997

Bruno says:

Plus he’s got a cheap contract.

Reggie C. says:

I don’t get why Theo wants to hold onto Lars Anderson. With Adrian Gonzalez, the 1B spot is covered for the next 6/7 years easy.

Johan Iz My Brohan says:

Lars Anderson is the next coming of Albert Pujols, duh!

I hope they get VMart as well, their farm takes a minor hit and its not for a super special player.

Mike Pop says:

I’d rather them stay exactly where they are and not pick up any of Halladay, V-Mart, or Gonzalez.

If they make a minor move, let them, but I’d like to see them sit tight.

Johan Iz My Brohan says:

The way I see it, I don’t believe VMart would make any major impacts. Their offense would still be worse than ours.

Klemy says:

USA Today’s Bob Nightengale via Twitter: the Red Sox are about to acquire Victor Martinez from the Indians.

Does Theo know that V-Mart isn’t white?

Rocky Road Redemption (formerly RAB poster) says:

…Which is why I thought the Boston whitewash thing was a load of crap.

JMK says:

Minor hit? What would be a major hit?

Johan Iz My Brohan says:

USA Today’s Bob Nightengale via Twitter: the Red Sox are about to acquire Victor Martinez from the Indians.

Johan Iz My Brohan says:

Now to see who the give up, better be Buccholz and more.

V says:

Lol, Stark says the Mariners wanted MIGUEL Montero from the Yankees.

You’d think these guys could get the fuggin’ names right, no?

Klemy says:

We should’ve just changed Kei Igawa’s name and sent him as Miguel.

VO says:
Raf says:

MLBTR is blocked at my job. who are the Soxs sending to the Indians?

Mike Pop says:

Dela G says:

damn it, the sox are about to acquire vmart

Johan Iz My Brohan says:

If/when this becomes official, VMart becomes their catcher of the future, and then Varitek goes, which means NO MO’ NO HITTAHS!

mustang says:

does anyone know what the sox give up?

Pitching please i hope

V says:

Bob Nightengale: “Mariners listened hard but rejected a deal from Red Sox for ace Felix Hernandez”

Raf says:

i cant see the Mariners seriously listening or a team willing to deal enough to get him. you could gut a farm system for King Felix.

Mike bk says:

that would have been a game changer.

Bo says:

How many 1b DH types will the Sox stockpile?

How does this make them better? Is Youk going to play SS now???

jsbrendog says:

3b where he originally playe di believe

Bo says:

A lil sarcasm there since they already moved Lowell out when LaRoche was added.

And the pos they truly need an upgrade is SS.

Nick Green should not be playing everyday.

jsbrendog says:

agreed. but its good for us! two throwing errors in the 9th the other day

jsbrendog says:

meh, sox get victor martinez. yawn.

Bo says:

The only player that would have made me nervous if the Sox got him was Halladay. Another 1b-DH type doesn’t scare me. And Martinez hasnt exactly been good lately. Who sits for them now? ortiz? Lowell? I cant see them sitting Varitek since the pitchers love him.

wtf says:

Agreed. If they got Halladay I would be throwing up profusely right now. THere was no way the yankees were going to get V-Mart.

I can’t wait to see Gardner/Jeter/Damon et al run wild all over Victor Martinez. Every single’s now a triple. Good times.

jsbrendog says:

varitek/vmart……worst catching tandem at throwing out baserunners?

Ha, yeah, it’s pretty atrocious.

wtf says:

V-Mart to the Sox means nothing to yankees, except for the fact that boston upgraded. V-Mart to the yankees makes no sense because there is no fit for him.

Bo says:

But wheres the upgrade? At Catcher? I cant see them benching Varitek. The pitchers would revolt. At DH for Big Juicy?

wtf says:

offensively they upgraded at both first and catcher.

Upgrade at 1B over Adam LaRoche.

Dexception32 says:

This basically means Mikey Lowell, who happens to be their hottest hitter right now finds the bench….

Just a side-note… But let’s not get too excited about Victor Martinez being the Sox’ only acquisition just yet. Day ain’t over yet, and there have been reports all week that they’ve been working on more than one acquisition.

jsbrendog says:

balloon deflation complete.

Ha, yeah, sorry. Remember last year when Manny was traded right at (and, really, after) the deadline? For all we know the Sox are about to go nuclear and bring in another piece, whether it be Halladay or someone we haven’t been discussing.

So let’s let the day play out before we start thinking we know the results.

jsbrendog says:

if the diamondbacks/rangers wouldnt trade one of their catchers for anything less than bucholz you have to think that’s a part of this no?

Paul O'neill says:

anyone but halladay.

Brendan says:

Bronson Arroyo just admitted to doing steroids in 2003 with the Red Sox…

It was andro and amphetamines, and it’s probably not relevant in a trade deadline thread.

Mike bk says:

well in some sense it is if the yanks were actually considering him as was rumored a couple days ago.

Klemy says:

STRETCHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH

Jack says:

From MLBTR’s comment section:

“Heres the likely potential trade:

V-Mart and LaPorta to Boston

Buchholz, Bowden, Bard, Anderson to Cleveland”

I found this quite humorous.

That sounds like a Pablano comment. I don’t frequent the comments much, but his always seem to catch the eye.

Bo says:

He forgot Westmoreland and Kelly

Dexception32 says:

Two Things, One picking up Tex looks even better now. Red Sox scrambling for a bat, giving up prospects. Two, they have to get rid of Laroche no?

mustang says:

if they gave up Clay Buchholz for V_mart

I’m so ok with that

Paul O'neill says:

i have a feeling they didnt

Paul O'neill says:

yankees need to add some pitching depth

mustang says:

Yes but what’s out there besides Doc?

nothing that I would give good kids for.

Paul O'neill says:

how about another bullpen arm

mustang says:

“Victor Martinez from the Indians. Ed Price of AOL Fanhouse, trying to confirm, says it “looks good.” FOX Sports agrees, and notes a lack of a third team involved. They also believe this kills the Adrian Gonzalez talks.”

just asking which would of been better Martinez or Gonzalez ?

I think Gonzalez.

Zack says:

depends on cost. gonzalez is obviously younger, cheaper and better. but would have cost buchholz, anderson, kelly/bard or more

Fat Francesa says:

Even Matsui can steal bases of V-Mart.

mustang says:

Worst with Varitek

Paul O'neill says:

as long as the sox dont get pitching. Their rotation is in shambles after beckett and lester.

Mike bk says:

1:27pm: FOX now says Clay Buchholz and Daniel Bard are not in this deal.

What is Schapiro doing?

mustang says:

You beat me to it.
What the fuck

KW says:

Masterson and Hagadone…yikes. Bad deal for the tribe

charlespoet says:

Buchholz and Bard not in the deal

charlespoet says:

Sorry, not appropriate for this thread but Red Sox misery is like watching the GOP come up with new ideas, pure comedy.

“David Ortiz lied to you. It seems safe to say that his entire Red Sox career is a lie. And those life-changing Red Sox championships of 2004 and 2007? Are they forever tainted? You bet.” — Dan Shaughnessy, Boston Globe

mustang says:

“like watching the GOP come up with new ideas, pure comedy.”

I love the line. LOL

Dela G says:
Bo says:

The Democrats are full of ideas? Tax and Spend?

Mike bk says:

cause the republicans didnt spend. 1.3 trillion dollar budget deficit this year was INHERITED. 5.5 trillion to 11 trillion in the bush years for the national debt. and lets not talk about yearly deficits for the rest of the time when they wouldnt count the cost of the wars.

Bo says:

So the idea in how to ignite the econ and solve it is….tax n spend. Standard Dem idea.

You are doing just what your buddies on capital hill do. Criticize ideas and bring nothing to the table. Congratulations on your stellar retort.

Easy guys. Just a comment not a point of discussion.

Hagadone and Masterson? I don’t know.

Mike bk says:

1:35pm: MLB.com’s Jonathan Mayo says (via Twitter) pitchers Nick Hagadone and Justin Masterson are in the deal. Gut reaction: nice haul.

Jose says:

Is Masterson really that great? The Red Sox typically have been using him when they are already losing. Oh wait, Peter Gammons is telling me that he is good enough to be a closer in the National League.

Mike bk says:

and that would mean what, peter? last i checked cleveland was in the AL. lol.

Jose says:

Just for the record, I was joking about the Gammons comment.

Masterson would be a starter if it weren’t for the unmatchable pitching depth of the Sawx.

Mike bk says:

1:35pm: MLB.com’s Jonathan Mayo says (via Twitter) pitchers Nick Hagadone and Justin Masterson are in the deal. Gut reaction: nice haul. Mayo also says the two clubs are looking at additional names to add for Cleveland.

I would say so.

Bo says:

Masterson is a bullpen arm but no secondary pitches.

Zack says:

and lefties are hitting over .300 against him

Dexception32 says:

Masterson is the savior for their bullpen, anytime starters are in trouble he puts out fires. He’s good. And its a tough loss for them this year.

Bo says:

Wonder if Cle makes him their closer.

Zack says:

arent they paying WOod 10m/year to do that?

Mike bk says:

1:47pm: ESPN’s Jayson Stark says the price for Bannister is similar to that of Jarrod Washburn – “big league-ready starter, pitching prospect with upside.” He says the Yanks maintain mild interest.

Bo says:

Ambriox Burgos????

What are the boards thoughts on the possibility of acquiring Bannister from the Royals?

Mike bk says:

i like it because he is 28 has a couple years of team control left and can fill the 5 spot for wang next year. also 50% gb is great.

Zack says:

serious question- why did he suck so bad last year?

Mike bk says:

cause he thought he needed to use his fastball more to get more misses. he changed this year and has been using a cutter more and getting more ground balls.

Salty Buggah says:

yep, and I heard he’s using his pitch f/x data to help him pitch better and he found out the stuff you said.

Bo says:

Bannister would certainly add to the depth of the starting pitching. We’d be able to give Joba breaks to prolong his starting which is good since the other option is the Key Man.

What Cashman will give up? Knowing his MO, not much.

mustang says:

The tribe gives V-Mart to the Sox for Justin Masterson and Nick Hagadone.

And ask the Yanks for hughes or joba for Lee

That’s fair.

Mike bk says:

dude get off it. the yanks never inquired on V-Mart.

Mike bk says:

and i dont remember them really being in on lee. the places that said joba or hughes were the halladay rumors and seattle but both were reported by heyman so it was probably just made up.

Bo says:

Well to be fair one is a Cy Young winning left handed starter. the other is a DH who can occasionally catch.

Mike bk says:

1:55pm: Rosenthal on MLB Network: the Dodgers are making a run at Gonzalez and Bell; could send James Loney to San Diego in such a deal.

SD had better get Kershaw to give up Gonzo in the division.

Zack says:

didnt they refuse to give up PEavy and his contract to LA?

Bo says:

What do they need with Bell? They just added Sherril.

Mike bk says:

not sure, especially when bell’s price is so inflated right now. im sure there are cheaper options if they want more pen work.

they didnt give up any of their best prospects for sherill so they still have “some” chips, but not if SD supposedly asked for maybin and miller for bell.

Zack says:

because only 2 of their starters (Billingsly/Wolf) average over 6 IP/S, they always need 3+ IP from their pen
Sherril-Bell-Broxton is pretty sick

C Bleak says:

What would be the best way of measuring one player vs the other using today’s stats. For example Robinson Cano vs. David Wright this year?

VORP is the stat I see used most often.

Salty Buggah says:

yep, that and WAR too, right?

Bo says:
C Bleak says:

Where can I find these listed?

Salty Buggah says:

WAR on fangraphs.com

handtius says:

we just got jerry Hairston Jr.?

That was unexpected.

Mike bk says:

back up cf while gardy is out and then dump ransom when gardy is back

It makes sense, I just wasn’t expecting it.

Salty Buggah says:

Hey, if Hairston can hit like he did last year in the short time he is here, I will be VERY happy. 127 OPS+

Mike bk says:

all he has to do is out hit ransom.

Salty Buggah says:

and he plays much better defense. Kinda below average at 3B and SS but above average at 2b and all OF positions in his career (bad in CF this year in 7 games so way too small of a sample)

(Comments wont nest below this level)

charlespoet says:

does that mean Hinske gets DFA or less playing time than he has now.

Mike bk says:

no ransom does when gardy is back

Reggie C. says:

If this Laroche for Kotchman trade is true then Theo might have an ace up his sleeve.

Salty Buggah says:

Yea, Theo getting lucky today.

Harold Reynolds…is…an idiot.

Salty Buggah says:

He thinks the Sox acquired Kotchman as a piece in a package for Adrian Gonzalez. WTF!?

Salty Buggah says:

Dexception32 says:

I think the Red Sox thus far have just shot themselves in the foot. Chemistry wise these trades are nightmarish. Varitek is gonna be pissed, Lowell is gonna be pissed, youkilis is gonna say wtf, no idea how loyal pitchers are to Varitek, but Schilling worships the guy and says everyone else does likewise. Masterson was a big time piece of their bullpen, and Victor or Kotchman are not additional pieces they are replacment pieces for which offensively they get really only a slight upgrade over Ortiz and Lowell….
