[...] 2.2009 Draft: Yanks agree to terms with second rounder JR Murphy | I’m still pulling for the guy, but come on man, at least be in shape. He’s 20(?) and he looks 45. He looks like Griffey Jr. does now, except in worse shape. … Hardy hasn’t been all that great, he’s back in AAA. Just trying to think of who else… … If this is your first time commenting on River Ave. Blues, http://riveraveblues.com/2009/08/2009-draft-yanks-agree-to-terms-with-second-rounder-jr-murphy-15995/ [...]

[...] Baseball America rated Murphy the 12th best prospect in the state and 95th best prospect overall heading into the 2009 Draft. Keith Law rated him the 88th best prospect in the class. Despite having considerable depth behind the plate, the Yankees selected Murphy with their second pick, #76 overall, which they received as compensation for failing to sign second rounder Scott Bittle in 2008. Committed to Miami, his signing wasn’t announced until the morning of the August 17th deadline because he received a well above slot $1.25M bonus. [...]

"And Heathcott wasn’t denied college or work, let’s not overreact."

That was my point? Teams didnt shy away from him because of his parents, just like LSU didnt shy away from him because of his parents, just like if he applied for a job they wouldnt shy away from him because of his parents.

"This isn’t really the forum for this but, yes, kids are unable to attend college and other luxuries many of us have because of their parents."

i wasnt talking about financial situations, if your parents have been in jail or something is that going to prevent a college from taking you? thats my point

I watched two potential employees not be able to get clearances for their jobs because of their families.

Children could soon become liable for their parents' debts under filial law, which although largely unenforced, has been on the books since France and England were arguing over to whom we belonged.

...its like telling a close family member or business associate some bad news when the news that's all around them is so much worse: its sort of a 'relativity' camouflage...

It depends how bad his defense is. As one of the best offensive shortstops if he is a sub par defender he is still probably more valuable than an a great defender who is average offensively at the position. The thing is right now he is actually playing very good defense. Given this uptick you have to think he may have found a way to extend his life at the position. It will all depend on how things go next year and beyond, but I think he'll stay at the position so long as he can give us at least sub-par defense (i.e. he'll move when he is incapable of playing the position).

Its a similar proposition for Posada. There is no rush to move either of these guys off premier positions if they can still play there and give us elite level offensive production for the position. Posada you give extra rest to keep him healthy, but he is a lot more valuable to us if he can start at least a good chunk of games at C. The same can be said for Jeter whose offense is a lot more valuable at SS than any other position we'd move him to because the production would be much harder to replace at SS.

I'm not sure if I believe that they won't sign either until the deadline passes.

But it's not like the Rays don't have 10+ years of high picks filling their minor league system....
