It’s a 2 run game, you have confidence in Bruney in a 2 run game? I wont judge* Claggett from his previous appearance in the bigs but he’s still a rookie.
The difference between an aggregate good few appearances and a bad few appearances is often one bad pitch. Bruney’s looked good more often than he’s looked bad recently.
Why in the world would you do that? A Yankees win tonight and a Red Sox loss gets you the same value as a Yankees win over the Sox. And you have no idea what’s going to happen tomorrow night.
You have to play to win every game, but you can’t do things to win a single game that may risk injury to your players weakening your ability to win multiple games later.
If you really played to win every game, you’d be 2005-2007 Joe Torre and you’d rip your bullpen to shreds and end up with shit come October.
Well, there’s a difference between having a guy unavailable because he needs an off-day that night and not putting a guy in because you want him to be available the next night.
And really, that’s not necessarily a mutually exclusive thing anyway. Part of the reason you wouldn’t run your closer out 5 straight days is that if he’s tired, he’s not necessarily giving you the best chance to win.
Both have pitched 4 times in the last 13 games. They shouldn’t be that tired out. I think they should just try to win the game, you never know what will happen tomorrow.
The good thing about that is that even if we lose 3 of the 4 games against the Sox, we still are only tied with the league. Imagine that…going 1-11 against them and still being in 1st place.
Hinske and Hairston… two solid reserves. Hopefully they get swayed by those shiny rings we’re gonna get this year and decide to stick around rather than look for a starting gig (that they’ll probably end up losing eventually anyway…)
I believe that Hairston is only a type B if he qualifies as an infielder. He’s getting most of his time on the Yankees as an outfielder, so he probably won’t qualify.
3 runs over 2 innings is a small lead? They could pitch to a 9.00 ERA and win. Just for the sake of comparison, that’s lower than Mitre’s ERA. So let’s not act like it’s a nailbiter.
i dont get why he doesnt go with melancon or bruney and then bring in hughes if the tieing runner gets up. especially since the bluejays pen is so bad well prolly score 3 more runs next inning.
Apparently they sent down Reddick before the game and their bench is Casey Kotchman(never played OF), Ortiz(no way does he play the OF) and JD Drew(apparently hurt).
I think Hughes shouldn’t have been in this game, and could probably use 2-3 days off, but his velo is fine. Whether it’ll continue to be fine if he’s used like this, that’s the question.
Like Herm Edwards said ” you play to win the game ”
Lets win this game first before thinking about the Roid Sox.
Hopefully the Yanks rock Smoltz and we do not need Hughes or Mo tomorrow night.
The strike outs and philthiness are still there, but it looks like Hughes is having some control issue, because he is tired…seriously he is being used way to often in my opinion
he pitched on July 26th, got 3 days off, pitched July 30th, got two days off, pitched August 2nd, got the off day, and now has pitched in back to back games. He’ll probably get tomorrow off and be available for the final three boston games. Not exactly pitching too much.
3 days off, then pitched one day, 2 days off in a row, pitched one day, then had a day off, then pitched two days in a row(including today). http://www.baseball-reference......;year=2009
I’m sure Mo would impart lots of valuable insight, but how many guys do you think he’s shown that cutter grip to over the years? Probably half the pitchers in the league. The man is sui generis.
Exactly. I don’t care if it’s 1-0 or 20-19, if we have a lead in the 9th in ANY game, we’re in a good spot. The Yankees are 0-8 this year against the Sox, lets not be overconfident.
Coming in, w/ Toronto pitching Roy Halladay in Game 1 and the Yankees offering Sergio Mitre in Game 2, I sure wasn’t figuring on a 2-game sweep. Nice work, Yanks!
Yanks now have a 30-25 road record. The Red Sox are now .500 on the road, Rays are 6 under. Only one other team in the AL besides the Yankees has a plus-.500 W-L record on the road … no surprise, it’s the Angels.
Oh, Baseball Tonight. You have to love how biased they are. After the Fielder/Mota fiasco last night, they showed the “wrong way” to throw at someone and, oh, of course, showed Joba throwing near Longoria. It was wrong because it was “near the head.” It didn’t hit him and honestly, wasn’t terribly close. Then they showed the “right way” and it was Garza hitting Teixeira. It was the “right way” because it wasn’t “near the head.” If he had half a brain, he would realize that the way Teixeira coiled, his shoulder was less than 6 inches from his head. So yeah, Kruk, you fat fuck, I guess Garza has impeccable control and can’t miss by 6 inches near Teixeira’s head. Not to mention, Garza’s pitch was closer to hitting Tex’s head than Joba’s was to hitting Longoria’s head. But why let that get in the way.
How much better off would we be if Johnson’s All-Star Game pitch over Kruk’s head actually hit him. A man can dream …
Little bit of love from the guy calling the game on ESPN towards the Yanks. Of course, Sutcliffe was silent the whole time.
can melancon get his first save
“Can a brother get a Melancon sighting?”
You’re black? Just kidding. I want to Melancon to pitch too.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZYJNCNrwi_g
(possibly offensive)
Heh I would pay Mike if he subsituted that for “brother.”
Might be offensive but kinda funny at the same time.
Aceves has throw more balls in this at-bat than he had facing any of the previous hitters.
And really? Scutaro jack? Are you freakin’ kidding me?
damn
So much for resting Hughes and Mo. Or at least Mo.
Rest them anyway.
Melancon and Bruney, backed up by Claggett.
in a 2 run game? you have that confidence in Bruney, and i wont just Claggett but still hes a rookie
I’d like to respond to that. Can you write it again, in intelligible English this time?
It’s a 2 run game, you have confidence in Bruney in a 2 run game? I wont judge* Claggett from his previous appearance in the bigs but he’s still a rookie.
Thanks.
It’s a 2 run game, you have confidence in Bruney in a 2 run game?
Gonna have to have confidence in him in a 2 run game at some point, may as well start here.
I wont judge* Claggett from his previous appearance in the bigs but he’s still a rookie.
Which is why he’d be the third option, but I left out Coke and Robertson by mistake, so he’s lower than that.
But if we score, say, two more runs here, abso-friggin-lutely I put him in in a 4 run game.
Why? This game is important too.
Who said it wasn’t?
Bruney and Melancon have pitched well recently.
Melancon yes. Bruney has allowed runs in 5 of his last 7 outings.
Bruney’s last 4 IP: 9 H, 5 ER, 3 HRs, 1 BB, 7 K
Well, he was very good last time out until Joe sent him back out there for a third inning.
Exactly.
The difference between an aggregate good few appearances and a bad few appearances is often one bad pitch. Bruney’s looked good more often than he’s looked bad recently.
I’m fine going to him here.
Damn it Marco!!!!!!!!!!!!
offense get some more runs so Melancon and D-Rob can finish this.
I know Ace was rolling but why not get another guy some work?
I guess you gotta save him for Boston, if you use him more, he won’t be available for 2 days then.
Phil, you have to bury that slider. Yikes.
Heart Attack
/ Damon going back to fly ball’d
Cardiac Arrest
/ Imagining Bruney in big spot’d
This might be one of those games where if you have to sacrifice this game so Mo and Hughes can get some much-needed rest, you do it.
Which means I’d love the Yanks to score 10 runs next inning.
Again, Coke, Bruney, and Melancon aren’t chopped liver.
I want to see them as much as you, but you know we’re probably seeing Mo tonight.
Yeah but they ain’t a grilled Steak either.
Why in the world would you do that? A Yankees win tonight and a Red Sox loss gets you the same value as a Yankees win over the Sox. And you have no idea what’s going to happen tomorrow night.
You have to play to win every game.
You have to play to win every game.
Yes and no.
How do you figure?
You have to play to win every game, but you can’t do things to win a single game that may risk injury to your players weakening your ability to win multiple games later.
If you really played to win every game, you’d be 2005-2007 Joe Torre and you’d rip your bullpen to shreds and end up with shit come October.
Well, there’s a difference between having a guy unavailable because he needs an off-day that night and not putting a guy in because you want him to be available the next night.

Both have pitched 4 times in the last 13 games. They shouldn’t be that tired out. I think they should just try to win the game, you never know what will happen tomorrow.
Yay, Girardi is going to use every single pitcher in the bullpen (except Melancon and Robertson, of course).
I would rather he use those 2 than Hughes today, we need Hughes for against the Bosox.
That slider still backed up, but outs is outs.
Bartlett hr, 6-3
off of the future closer of a NL team delcarmen
The good thing about that is that even if we lose 3 of the 4 games against the Sox, we still are only tied with the league. Imagine that…going 1-11 against them and still being in 1st place.
No.
Imagine going 4-10 instead.
Bruney and Melancon for two with Claggett/Drob for emergency
Classic overcommercialization there. They show the “Geico Play of the Game” and the “Geico Play of the Game” logo COMPLETELY obscures the actual play.
all part of the plan.
Hilarious.
Damn, just read in SI that Pablo Sandoval can throw 88 with both arms. Crazy.
And he knows kung fu.
kung fu panda now ops-ing .947
love that guy
Carlson almost reminds me of T-Clips falling off to the left like that. I bet Carlson can’t fall to the right too though.
All that bouncing around and it was only a double?
Love that from Melky there.
C’mon Robbie, we need more runs.
Oh, and Ali will be honored at the Stadium tommorrow night?!
WOW
Thought that was in the second deck.
Eric Hinske, I hope you’re back next year.
Sure, why not.
Hinske and Hairston… two solid reserves. Hopefully they get swayed by those shiny rings we’re gonna get this year and decide to stick around rather than look for a starting gig (that they’ll probably end up losing eventually anyway…)
if hairston isnt back then it means we got 2 picks for him as he will be a type B FA in the AL after year and at 2 mil you have to offer arb to him.
We get only one pick for a Type B.
I believe that Hairston is only a type B if he qualifies as an infielder. He’s getting most of his time on the Yankees as an outfielder, so he probably won’t qualify.
All Hinske does is produce. Wonderful.
No HR?
Dammit, Hinske!
Good job Hinske!!!
Four pitch walk to Molina? Fail.
Red Sox sign Paul Byrd, again.
Link?
OH CRAP NOW THEY HAVE THE EQUALIZER!!!!!!
This signing is proof positive of their ridiculous pitching depth.
Dammit Theo! You’re a damn genius. Meanwhile Cashman is twiddling his thumbs.
No link, yet. Saw it on MLB Network.
Damn, Kenny is euphoric about “the Greatest” showing up tommorow. Damn, we gotta win one for Ali.
Wow, how did Longoria not throw home there?
He didn’t even look. It’s like he forgot there was a runner on third.
Ya, he fucked up.
Without seeing it, I don’t have a problem with it. They’re up by three with six outs to go. Get the sure out.
Bro he would’ve had him by ten steps. Wasn’t even close.
WTF? Hughes
WTF? Hughes?
There’s no need to use Mo, assuming the lead stays at three runs.
Nor is there a need to use Hughes here. WTF?
Wow, Longoria just pulled a WTF. Anyone see that?
Joe Torre bringing in Hughes.
Why the FFFFFFFFFFUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUU is Hughes pitching?
there goes hughes for tomorrow. seriously in a 3 run game put melancon in.
Milla Jovovich hasn’t made a non-action movie since the George H.W. Bush administration.
Ugh, why Hughes?
Is it really necessary to go to Hughes here? I know he’s going for the win, but is Melancon such a terrible option with a 3 run lead?
does joba throw at youk tomorrow?
I almost hope so.
Let’s not act like 3 runs is a big lead. I like Hughes here.
and u will be the one complaining tomorrow when he cant pitch.
Actually I really won’t. I’m sure you will though.
3 runs over 2 innings is a small lead? They could pitch to a 9.00 ERA and win. Just for the sake of comparison, that’s lower than Mitre’s ERA. So let’s not act like it’s a nailbiter.
Did I call it a small lead?
Look, now the tying run is in the hole.
Now he’s on deck.
So?
Just sayin, a 3 run lead isn’t a big lead. The tying run is always in the hole. It can get away from you quick. That’s why I don’t mind Hughes.
Oh, heavens me. There are 4 outs and it’s a 3 run lead. It would take a catastrophe to give that up. An ERA over 20.
I guess this just goes to show how much the save rule has done to common sense when evaluating a baseball game.
Yeah. It’s a small lead. Variance kills.
Um, no. Not at all. Apparently, the save rule kills common sense too.
Just saying that all the talk about a 20 ERA is silly. Means and variances are two different things.
It’s big enough to not require your best non-Mo reliever against a middling offense.
I would use Mo tonight for sure but using Hughes in a 3-run lead is a bit too much. But at least Girardi isnt like Torre….
now we get to watch bruney blow a game in boston tomorrow seriously i dont know what girardi is thinking.
Anyone who botched about torres pen use can’t say girardi is good with pen
Girardi, we all LOVE Hughes, but please, save him for the next series. You do know there is more than 3 people in the bullpen right?
It seems like Hughes nevers gets any rest either.
Not true at all. This is the only the 3rd time that Hughes has pitched on back to back nights and he gets at least 2 days off each time that happens.
Hughes doesnt look the same. He must be dreaming of the 5th spot.
I really think he is just tired, since August began he pitched on the 2nd, 4th, 5th (today). As well as the 30th of July. That is crazy.
He was off the 31st, the 1st and the 3rd, now he’ll have off tomorrow. Not too crazy IMO.
He’s a starter
Not right now he’s not.
Wouldnt be surprised if 2 guys get on Mo comes in this inning.
dont give girardi any ideas.
Would it kill girardi to use melancon?
i dont get why he doesnt go with melancon or bruney and then bring in hughes if the tieing runner gets up. especially since the bluejays pen is so bad well prolly score 3 more runs next inning.
Geez, pulling Jason Bay in the 8th for defensive replacement with a guy that has never played LF before. Talk about super depth there for the Sox.
Nick Green can’t even play SS that well. Does Francona want to lose?
Apparently they sent down Reddick before the game and their bench is Casey Kotchman(never played OF), Ortiz(no way does he play the OF) and JD Drew(apparently hurt).
heh. Even the ESPN guys can’t defend that move.
Hughes cutter has some good movement since its being classified as a slider on Gameday
All these pitches … the velo is suffering .
First pitch to Barajas was 95.1.
Cutter to K him was 90.8.
I’m not a big fan of usiing “Roid Sox”.
Anyone with me?
yeah, pot/kettle
what else do you call them.
Curt Schilling and the Blood Sox…the greatest rock band in all the bars in Boston!
lol right down the middle
Damn Hughes with a 3-2 cutter!!
Not a bad cutter for strike 3.
that cutter was almost like a change-up
Mo teaching Phil to throw the cutter?
The strike outs and philthiness are still there, but it looks like Hughes is having some control issue, because he is tired…seriously he is being used way to often in my opinion
he pitched on July 26th, got 3 days off, pitched July 30th, got two days off, pitched August 2nd, got the off day, and now has pitched in back to back games. He’ll probably get tomorrow off and be available for the final three boston games. Not exactly pitching too much.
3 days off, then pitched one day, 2 days off in a row, pitched one day, then had a day off, then pitched two days in a row(including today).
http://www.baseball-reference......;year=2009
haha, beat ya to it Drew.
not quite http://riveraveblues.com/2009/.....ent-514345
well……….ummmmmm……damn.
I included a link! heh
Molina pulling a Posada.
Props to Mo for teaching Hughes that nasty cutter. Mo for PITCHING COACH!
Yeah, Mo should teach the cutter to Melancon, Robertson, and Bruney too.
Johnny fuckin’ Damon!
Mo + Mussina on the pitching coaching staff in years to come.
I’m sure Mo would impart lots of valuable insight, but how many guys do you think he’s shown that cutter grip to over the years? Probably half the pitchers in the league. The man is sui generis.
No Mo!
I realize that I made a similar post below, but it’s pretty funny how we’re rooting for the best reliever on the team to not enter the game.
At least we won’t see Mo now. Thanks John.
Word.
Never mind MO
That Hughes Cutter had some serious movement to K Barahas.
Well now they don’t have to waste Mo. Give Bruney or Melancon an inning.
Positively Damonic!
Clagget now.
DAMoN!
damon baby. back on da juice
Now will Hughes stay in or will a brother get Melancon
Clagget. He’s probably gone tomorrow. Keep the other arms fresh, I hope.
Eh I mean they haven’t felt the need to pitch Clagget yet, doubt it will be in the 9th in a 4 run game.
haha singy pronounced that encarnaCION
the number 2 hitter in our line-up is slugging .508
When did Tony Kornheiser get the Mens Warehouse gig?
Well if Robertson does his job, at least Mo will be available for the opener for the sox series.
if we need Mo tomorrow, facing Smoltz. then something went wrong
If we need Mo tomorrow, then something went right, regardless of who’s pitching.
um no. they cant get more than a 2-3 run cushion off Smoltz?
They can, hopefully they do, but baseball is a crazy game.
Exactly. I don’t care if it’s 1-0 or 20-19, if we have a lead in the 9th in ANY game, we’re in a good spot. The Yankees are 0-8 this year against the Sox, lets not be overconfident.
Aight, D-Rob, I’ll take it.
Good spot for D-Rob here.
Robertson.
I think it is a good choice don’t risk the lead or make Mo come in. Clagett is not great.
Silly curve.
That curve was sick.
Cap’n America K’s, then complains to the ump. Bunch of whiners on that team.
NO MO STOP GETTING LOOSE
this makes no sense here but I don’t care.
I caught 4 No Hittahs, and you call that a strike, who is paying you?
Liking the high socks from D-Rob
+1, no homo.
That’s still not getting old, lol every time I see/hear it.
have we ever retired scutaro in the 9th inning?
This is retarded. If he hits a homer, they’re still up two. Why warm Mo up? Oh, right, Girardi’s got a job to save.
The guys job is to throw baseball. Thats what he does for a living.
Throwing lightly in the bullpen is not going even tire one molecule in his arm.
Why is everyone so protective of him? He’s 38, not 88.
38 is 88 in pitcher’s shoulder years. And he just had surgery too.
What? That matters? No way.
+1
True Dat
You’re right. Throw him everyday. Good plan.
Agreed. Too many people act like coming back from 4 runs down (or 3 or 2) with a few outs left is as easy as 1-2-3.
And Ball 3 from D-Rob was a strike.
Robertson looks spectacular out there.
I love me some D-Rob.
No offense Baseball, but if the fucking pitch is a strike it should be called a strike whether it hit the target or not. UGH
Since when does D-Rob throw 94?
Also, could this signify that he’s moving up in the pecking order, since it’s “only” a 4 run lead?
Always, his fastball is sneaky fast. He’s not really a big guy and his windup is pretty easy which I think makes it look even faster then 93-94.
Thank you, Adam Lind.
I don’t like to be overly cocky but we should pound the everlasting shit out of John Smoltz tomorrow night. Like 8 ER in 3 innings.
yeah, he’ll piece it together and pitch well, I just have a bad feeling
Considering the starter only went 4.1, hell of a job by the pen.
Yep, just awesome.
What championship teams are made of!
Someone actually finished a game besides Mo !!!
I am in shock.
Yay D-Rob! Yay win!
good game, good night
Sox 0-11 w/RISP!
Question
Is Russ Ortiz >>>>> Brett Tomko
heh, is this something we really want to ponder?
No. Russ Ortiz is sub-replacement level crap. Tomko is replacement level crap.
whos crap smells worse contest?
Girardi needs to chill on the dry humps. He’s like a fourteen year old.
Karl Ravech sucks at numbers
Karl Ravech sucks at numbers
of course.
…WTF? Greatest closer in history and he goes to Drob?! Joe ‘i’m not Torre’ and his bullpen futzing
Why would he need to use Mo with a 4 run lead against Toronto’s lineup?
Huh!? Torre wouldv’e brought Mariano in there … “just to make sure.”
Joe T didn’t trust more than two guys in his bullpen (and one of them was usually named Scott Proctor).
Resting up the arms for the next 4 games sounds right.
Also a non-save situation let the little ones gobble it up.
Coming in, w/ Toronto pitching Roy Halladay in Game 1 and the Yankees offering Sergio Mitre in Game 2, I sure wasn’t figuring on a 2-game sweep. Nice work, Yanks!
Another interesting item was the Sox lost starting Lester and a Smoak type bat.
I’m so ready for the Sox series. The last few series vs them just didn’t have the feel that these August series have.
Most likely because we were getting worked.
word
Yanks now have a 30-25 road record. The Red Sox are now .500 on the road, Rays are 6 under. Only one other team in the AL besides the Yankees has a plus-.500 W-L record on the road … no surprise, it’s the Angels.
I really hope John Kruk gets released after this season from the Baseball Tonight cre.
Damn Tommy Hanson’s curve is legit.
How much better off would we be if Johnson’s All-Star Game pitch over Kruk’s head actually hit him. A man can dream …
Kruk is a waste of space. He is a grade A moron. He needs to go to Bovine University.
well if that happened, the hamster would have fallen off the wheel.
Touche.
BBTN is a joke
How does Kim Jones come up with these questions?
To Alex: 0-8 vs Boston, do you have to win?
Oh, Al’s reply:
Yeah, we have to win eventually.
Bob Lorenz, ftw.
Jason Bay reinjured his hamstring eh?
