    gutty

  • JGS

lucky–Yankees players aren’t allowed to be gritty

    • NYQ

Brett Gardner takes offense to that

  • e mills

    obviously lucky…ignorant Yankees fans

  • Brazilian Yankee

If he were a red sox, gritty. Since he isn’t, lucky.

  • dkidd

is this the inning that breaks the scoreless streak?

  • http://bronxbaseballdaily.com Matt ACTY/BBD

    Can a Yankee be gritty?

    • Jon

      Gardner’s on the DL.

  • Drew

    How about “gricky?”

  • Jeremy

Sorry if I missed the boat on this but:

The CC/Santana Subway commercial is really creepy, right? Two guys sitting in the locker room gazing in awe at their big sandwiches?

    lucky

    • Edwantsacracker

He didn’t shave this morning. I think that makes him gritty.

  • Josh k

    Bye Pukealis…

  • putt

If the Sawx had hit even a little bit this weekend, this series would have a drastically different feel. Beckett, Bucholz, and now Lester have more or less shut down this lineup for 3 days in a row. Thank goodness for Smoltz and that overworked bullpen…

    • Tank the Frank

You mean thank goodness for AJ, CC, and now Andy’s utter dominance.

      • putt

No doubt, I’m not trying to downplay their performances at all. Hopefully they keep it going! I’m just saying that it’s not like the Yanks have battered their starters all weekend. They have gotten the big hits though, so I guess I’ll take that and run with it…

    • Jon

i wouldnt say bucholz shut them down. he gave up like 5 walks. The results (2 runs) were there for him, but it’s nothing like being shut down by lester and beckett. And although that is frustrating, they are good pitchers.

      • putt

        so rational. I envy you.

    • Sweet Dick Willie

I guess our pitchers don’t get any credit, huh?

      • putt

That’s not my point. These guys pitched their balls off, and I hope they keep on doing it. I’m just saying it would’ve been nice to see the NY bats knock their confidence a little bit. Right now, Beckett and more importantly Bucholz (especially when so many feel that’s the one thing from keeping him from taking off) feel they can shut down this lineup.

  • Ivan

    Cons: Andy’s white.

    Pro: Andy’s a yankee.

So really chances are it’s gonna lean to lucky.

    • JGS

white guys can be gritty–in fact, only white guys can be gritty

gritty black guys are called athletic and exciting

      • JMK

        You forgot toolsy and lazy.

  • J Squared

little bit of both. Can’t fault pettitte for the red sox horrible hitting.

  • Bugsy

I think you get 6 innings out of Andy then go to the BP.

  • toad

That’s the way to pitch on 0-2

  • http://bronxbaseballdaily.com Matt ACTY/BBD

So does Joe say “Sorry, Andy” and make him throw 120+ tonight to save the ‘pen for tomorrow during Mitre’s outing?

    • J Squared

Probably not… Gaudin after Mitre = 1 CC start.

      • J Squared

        innings wise.

      • http://bronxbaseballdaily.com Matt ACTY/BBD

Oh right, I forgot about Gaudin.

    • J Squared

      yes.

  • TurnTwo

so do you take 6 scoreless innings from Andy and turn it over to a well rested pen, or run him out after the easiest inning of the night and have the bullpen ready if he gets into trouble in the 7th?

    • NYQ

      Let him good out

    • Bugsy

the latter. if he puts a runner on, then ya yank ‘im.

      • JMK

        Matsui available for pinch running?

  • mike HC

For all you ESPN is biased people, this is the headline on the front page:

“Lester To The Rescue? The Red Sox continue their offensive slump, but at least Jon Lester is shutting out the Yankees, too.”

Can a headline be any less objective?

    • Pasqua

Can one example disprove a generally-accepted and oft-proven rule?

      • Pasqua

Nevermind what I just typed. I misread the headline.

    • ShuutoHeat

At least they didn’t go with the “Lester is so sexy and we explode in our pants when we see him.” headline.

    • Jeremy

Eh, it’s not bad. The Sox are in need of rescue, they are not hitting, and Lester is pitching really well.

  • danny

well if your gona give him that pitch…

  • J Squared

Heh, They have nothing to say about Lester getting call out of the Strike Zone?

  • LiveFromNewYork

Andy Pettitte is second on the list of career postseason wins, with 14, and he’s first with most starts and most innings pitched, ever. In six World Series with the Yankees and one with the Astros, he’s started 11 World Series games.

He is quite simply one lucky bastard.

That cutter is filthy. Lester is just a stud, gotta give him credit. It’s hard to believe he got off to such a rocky start when he’s pitching like this now. Must have been missing his spots badly.

    • danny

this is why you have to be patient with young pitchers, yea im talking to you b-jobbers!

    • adeel

I don’t disagree with what you are saying… but he is getting A LOT of calls going his way tonight…. If I was a hitter, I would swing at everything.

arod hr. no point in finishing my thought.

        • Steve H

Very shortsighted to say they suck. 62-47 and had a legit chance to win Friday night and tonight. A few bounces away from a 2-2 split of this series.

          • Bugsy

they haven’t played well for a solid month now. i suppose the offense could score a few run but things dont look good for them.

lets get a run here then Hughes and Mo to seal it.

  • Pasqua

As we head toward the tail-end of another scoreless game, here’s a question re: mindset…

If the Sox eek this one out 1-0, or 2-1, for example, do you think they would take the attitude that things finally went their way, or still feel the frustration of not being able to hit and score?

Reason I ask: Friday’s game had that “whoever-wins-is-king” kind of feel, yet if you repeat that type of game tonight, I can’t see the Sox taking the same amount of satisfaction from it (and not just b/c they would have lost 3 out of 4).

    Just a thought…but I still think we’ll win.

    • adeel

I think a-rod has a problem with your theory

    • southernyankeefan

      IETC

  • http://twitter.com/Hopjake Jake H

    that was an easy play.

  • danny

    ughh, fuck u midget

and hes not “staying low”, hes just short, stupid.

  • putt

I’m just hating now, but Cano makes that same play with 1/4 of the effort…but that max effort makes it look like a “webgem.”

    • southernyankeefan

      Yeah Cano is lazy duh

    • danny

      lol it really is fooling.

  • Bob C

Pedroia loves to embellish on routine plays

  • dkidd

    come on melky

hit right here breaks their spirit

  • LiveFromNewYork

Pedroia has quick feet because they are a size 3

    • ShuutoHeat

That’s the rumor, truth is…he’s fast because of the elven magic.

  • No Halladay

My liver sez that Beantown blows so go easy and save the tequilla for the Angels.

    • Pasqua

      Is that code for something?

      • No Halladay

see below, this division is OVER, calling it now

My B- commented in the wrong place

  • Tony

Joe Morgan really hasn’t been bad tonight. Phillips, on the other hand…

    • Little Bill

I truly believe ESPN put Phillips in the booth to make Morgan look smarter. Phillips is probably the only guy who could do that.

    • Pasqua

I think you mean that Joe Morgan has been “bad as usual, but not more than usual.”

  • Pingback: DeLaRosa dominates again, but Trenton falls in extras | River Avenue Blues

    Hughes to da 8th?

  • No Halladay

Shocking that Boston would crash so bad, but you know this division is over if it’s at 6.5 with 8 weeks left.

  • Souter Fell

    Coke?

  • cjc

um fuck the matchups give me Hughes

  • Tony

    Preemptive “WHAT THE FUCK, GIRARDI?”

    • Tony

To make it clear, needs more Hughes

      • Russell NY

        Agreed!

  • Johan Iz My Brohan

    Get’m Coke!

  • danny

oh my, “cokie” please no hr’s

  • No Halladay

Good matchup, still need another lefty int he pen, Marte?

  • Brazilian Yankee

Where’s Hughes? Is he coming in for Pedroia and V-Mart?

    • adeel

      times infinity

  • NYQ

    I want the other Phil!!

  • No Halladay

QUESTION where the hell is Edwar Ramirez? I know in AAA, but he should be here when the rosters expand.

  • J Squared

    GET SOME!!!

  • http://bronxbaseballdaily.com Matt ACTY/BBD

Shut up, Jacoby. He called the same pitch for Lester.

    • J Squared

Lester’s was outside, that was definitely Corner.

  • No Halladay

    Coke is filthy folks, filthy.

  • Brazilian Yankee

Lester got that call all night long. Nice to see we get the same call.

  • Ivan

    Big out there Coke.

  • Reggie C.

Nice to see Coke get a Lester call on that K.

  • Drew

    uuuuugeee coke

  • Riddering

Sit down, Best CF in History!

  • Bugsy

i dont get this shit. why isn’t hughes pitching?

    • Little Bill

They must not want to use him. I think he’s pitched 2 straight days, though he only pitched to 1 hitter each game. We’ll have to wait for Girardi’s post game to know. They may use Rivera for 4 outs.

    • Drew

Maybe Joe doesn’t want to use him 3 days in a row.

  • Johan Iz My Brohan

Ellsbury needs a lot more grit to grow that beard he wants. Sadly, he doesn’t have any, thats why he has the facial hair of a young boy going through puberty.

  • No Halladay

Mo to seal the sweep, and maybe the division, nice

  • J Squared

Gotta love that, We’re better than you and I’m gonna strike you out attitude Coke has.

  • Drew

    motherfucker tryin to test Melky

  • No Halladay’s Liver

why is hughes not in this game ?

  • southernyankeefan

    Coke please dont blow it.

  • Brazilian Yankee

How come Hughes isn’t in to face Pedroia? That’s a dumb decision. Martinez better be Coke’s last batter.

  • Tony

What the shit is Girardi doing here.

  • Russell NY

This is where you take out Coke.

  • Salty Buggah

    no Hughes?

  • JGS

why is coke IN this game?

  • Januz

    This match-up Coke/Martinez scares me.

    • cjc

      ditto

  • No Halladay

My liver is bigger than you know what big

  • danny

    DP! DP! DP!

  • Bugsy

man, girardi is really taunting the sox to score a run. that’s the reason why hughes isn’t in there, right?

  • Cokie

What is this crap. Why is the loogy in there?

    • http://bronxbaseballdaily.com Matt ACTY/BBD

Because Coke is much, much more than a LOOGY.

      • Cokie

        Riiight.

  • Russell NY

    Give me a DP please

  • http://bronxbaseballdaily.com Matt ACTY/BBD

    Get ‘im, Phil!

  • espn stinks

Morgan is the worst when talking about second basemen.

Pedroia “jumps” into the ball. Cano “gets it done”. But no 2B is as good as the great Joe Morgan. None. Ever. He’s the best.

    • Accent Shallow

Joe Morgan was a great, great player.

He might be an awful commentator, but he was significantly better than either Pedroia or Cano.

  • southernyankeefan

I know why all of the sudden stop playing the matchups.

  • No Halladay

I like Coke, he’s a good cat, good stuff, nasty, and under used, not a Myers

  • Tank the Frank

I don’t like these swings the Sox are taking.

    • Russell NY

      horrible decision by Girardi… horrible

  • J Squared

Gotta dot the outside corner here… can;t let him pull this.

  • danny

huuuuuuuughes is not even up :(

  • dre

freaking girardi..hughes has pitched to 2 btters ll weakend..where is he now?????

    Girardi blew this fuckin game

  • dre

i knew it girardi is such and iddoit!!!!!!!!

  • No Halladay

OK, so Coke should have been pulled, fire Girardi

  • Brazilian Yankee

And obviously he blows the game. If we lose this one, it’s on Girardi.

    • Drew

Yeah, why blame the pitcher with the 5 era, blame the manager.

  • Ivan

    Figures.

  • cjc

saw that coming from a million miles away Girardi will get killed in the postgame for this one

  • danny

    FUCK!!!!!!!!!!!!!
i fucking knew it. fuck, fuck, fuck.

  • Souter Fell

Dammit, knew coke couldn’t sneak one by em

  • Pasqua

Cue “The Homerun That Turned The Sox Around” stories!

    • Chili Davis

That’s probably the most sickening part of this. You know those fucking stories are coming.

  • Little Bill

Joe Girardi may have just cost the Yankees 2 games in the standings. No reason Hughes couldn’t pitch.

    • Pasqua

Game’s not over, but I understand the frustration.

  • Drew

Oh fuck me. COke is fucking annoying. Falls behind the first two hitters then gets ahead of V-Mart and does that.

  • yankees boy

    Nice one Girardi.

  • E-ROC

Martinez was early on everything. Why throw a fastball?

  • Brazilian Yankee

Hey, at least Hughes is resting on the ‘pen.

  • Rob H.

It has to be that Hughes wasn’t available for a third day in a row. That can be the only explanation.

    • Tony

Well, good thing he threw 1/3 of an inning two days in a row for no reason.

      • Drew

        +1.
        I hate wins.

    • dre

third day????????? hes pitched to a total of 2 guys!!!!!

  • http://www.twitter.com/wahbjo01 Jordan

    Love affair needs to end.

  • Bob Stone

If this ends up a loss, it’s on Girardi – Completely on him.

  • J Squared

Why do you keep calling inside if he is hitting them foul? He was on top of the inside pitch… come the fuck on. OUTSIDE!! STRIKE ZONE IS WIDE!!! get a BALL CALLED A STRIKE!!

  • dre

coke should not have been pitching..isn’t hughes our set up man??????? has he not been on fire??? how does he not start that inning????????????? GIRARDI SUCKS!!!

  • putt

That’s the kick in the balls I’ve been hoping to avoid all night…

  • JGS

    Chad Gaudin?????

is hughes really not available because he pitched to two batters over the past two days?

    • Bob Stone

      That’s ridiculous.

  • Bob C

hughes is obviously not available, weird

  • JeffG

Phil has pitched two innings in two days… Giardi – just stupid – we had this in the bag.

    • Pasqua

      not even 2 innings, right?

  • cjc

what the fuck if Hughes is unavailable because of 9 fucking pitches than someon should be shot

  • Mike Ox

    Unbelievable.
Coke is not quite ready for prime time.

  • Russell NY

Had to be the new Red Sock too.. Youkilis singled. Hughes must have called Girardi a raptor before the game.

  • LiveFromNewYork

you guys might be right but comon now

  • southernyankeefan

I have no problem with coke facing ellsbury but hes not the guy i want facing the heart of the order when they are all fucking righties.

  • No Halladay

It is Martinez, he can hit, it can happen. One run isn’t enough most of the time.

    • http://bronxbaseballdaily.com Matt ACTY/BBD

Get your logic out of here.

  • Pasqua

Yeah, I gotta say, no Hughes was curious. If he uses the “he pitched in three straight games” argument, I’ll lose my mind. He’s throwing about 5 pitches an inning at this point.

    • JGS

      but innings are what matters!!!1!

  • Souter Fell

    Alright, let’s get it back.

  • http://bronxbaseballdaily.com Matt ACTY/BBD

Two batters too late. Whatever, the Yankees have two more ABs. It’s all good.

  • Johan Iz My Brohan

1 to tie, 2 to win GO YANKEES!

  • The Ghost of Scott Brosius

Not having a righty up to start this inning, bruney or drob or somebody, is just incompetence. I have no issue with not using hughes, but this was just awful by girardi. awful. we had a chance to bury them and he gave it away

  • JGS

and now here comes Bard and Papsmear

  • http://thesportsshowlive.blogspot.com/ Joey H

The silent Hughes Rules? Bullshit. I do not get why he wasn’t in for that spot. Dick-headed move by Girardi.

  • No Halladay

    No taco, no shot, fucko

  • Salty Buggah

fuck we better tie this game now!

  • Steve H

Is V-Mart now a true Red Sox?

  • Mike Ox

Could of buried the Sox here tonight but this will give them new life IF they hold on. Nice job Joe.

  • charlespoet

There is no whining or blaming Girardi allowed. I believe Girardi is not the one throwing the pitches, but could be wrong.

  • Ivan

    Big DP there.
