• LiveFromNewYork

We need more runs to sty 7 games up past the next 5 innings.

    • Salty Buggah

      7.5

      • LiveFromNewYork

Right but right now we’re at 7..don’t want to drop back to 6.5

  • Dela G

    LETS GO YANKEES!

  • baravelli

Tex’s defense continues to be stellar, but I just wanna say: I have never seen a first baseman who so flat out refuses to flip the ball to the pitcher.

    • DGeezy

SELFISH PLAYER!!! he mustve learned his selfishness from AROD

  • Bugsy

do you guys notice the hotty behind home plate? it’s a nice contrast to that ugly argyle sweater.

    • PinstripesForeverDougie

I think she dating the Mariners Moose. Remember that Moose has serious street cred after he almost rubbed out Cocco crisp;)

    • Bugsy

bah. the yes banner is blocker her.

  • LiveFromNewYork

French struck out Arod? It must be opposite day.

  • VO

I’m late on this because the old thread wasn’t refreshing for me but I just want to laugh at Salty for letting the ball go underneath him in gym class.

    • Salty Buggah

heh I wasnt paying attention and I was talking to this hot senior teacher’s assistant. She was short, tanned, well endowed, and blonde bombshell. I was a freshman and she was a junior so I couldnt help but let a bad hop go underneath me.

      • Salty Buggah

Sad part is that I saw her 6 months ago but she got kinda fat/thick.

        • Salty Buggah

and she was too tanned and I find that unattractive. Back in 9th grade, she was tanned in moderation (kinda too much but acceptable looking at her other parts). Obviously I had a crush on her but my girlfriend at the time was in the same class. :(

          • VO

Dude if the girl was there you have to IMPRESS. I remember we were playing baseball and they had me playing center and it was a concrete field but my girl was watching so I dove to catch it anyway sprained my wrist but that’s alright. Then there was the time in basketball my team was losing and I shot the ball at half court to win the game.

            • VO

Now that I reread that I feel like I’m showing off, I just wanted to show you the differences not go that far.

            • Salty Buggah

yea but I liked my gf a lot and I had cheated on her once already (at least one she knew about ;)…I used to come to NY every summer and I had a thing my cousins neighbor)

  • Dela G

    damn alex

  • Dela G

aaaaand flaherty says he’s proud of his stuff again

    • LiveFromNewYork

Flash is lucky he mde it out of AAA. Ignore him.

    • Jose

Are there any pitchers in all of MLB that aren’t proud of any of their stuff?

      • Dela G

        jose veras?

        • ShuutoHeat

          Brett Tomko?

          • Jose

No, Tomko believed in his stuff. That was why he was so devastated when he didn’t make the team out of Spring Training.

            • ShuutoHeat

He did? I always felt like he was just dragging his feet around every inning, hoping that it’ll end quickly and not as ugly.

            • Dela G

              bingo on the tomko comment

          • King of Fruity Hypos

            John Smoltz?

  • Accent Shallow

A nice 1-2-3 inning from this guy? Oy. Especially upsetting with Mitre on the mound.

  • Dela G

    inglorious bastards

great to hear kenny say that on tv

    • wilcymoore

      “inglurious basterds.”

      • Dela G

        lol

  • Little Bill

Mitre is doing just fine. He will get into the 6th inning with at least a 2 run lead. Then go to Ace.

  • baravelli

Did Ichiro just take a dump before stepping into the box?! Does he always do that?

  • LiveFromNewYork

Mitre always has this look like he wandered onto the field and doesn’t quite know how he got there.

  • whozat

didn’t aceves throw last night? Or did he just warm up?

    • Dela G

he was prolly warming up, he didnt pitch yesterday

    • Little Bill

Just warmed up. Pettitte, Hughes, and Mo pitched yesterday.

  • Dela G

    mitre is looking great tonight

he’s thrown so few pitches it seems

  • Bugsy

wow. so mitre, huh? this guy just assured another start.

  • Johan Iz My Brohan

Ichiro is 0-3 against Mitre tonight. BUST!

  • Bugsy

unbelievable. all you see of that hot girl is her cleavage.

  • PinstripesForeverDougie

C’mon Surge- shoot for the stars… record 5 innings ;)

Then we can go to a real pitcher in Ace.

  • LiveFromNewYork

The name Jose Lopez is the Spanish equivalent of John Smith

    • http://www.facebook.com/dougchu Doug

      I think it’s “Joe Wolf.”

      • Accent Shallow

He’s talking in terms of how common it is, not a literal translation.

    • Jose

Haha that is sooooooooo clever… Jose is in fact one of the most common first names, and Rodriguez is one of the most common last names.

  • Joebrah

Mitre’s best game to this point?

Unearned first run, and just shitty luck on that second one.

    • Salty Buggah

he’s had a lot of shitty luck this year

    • LiveFromNewYork

      Has Molina caught him before?

      • ShuutoHeat

uh oh i see where you’re going with this!

      • Joebrah

        Good question.

I wanna say yes. His second to last start maybe?

      • Bugsy

        oh don’t you start.

  • King of Fruity Hypos

    Meattray to teh 8th!!!!

  • http://theyankeeuniverse.com Moshe Mandel

He deserves another inning. Runs came on an error and a chopper, and he is under 80 pitches.

    • Little Bill

I agree. Put him out there, if he gets in trouble bring Ace in.

  • Salty Buggah

nice Mitre…one more good inning and then pen time

  • Dela G

    MITRE!!!

    ON TO TEH 6TH!

    HOLY SHEEEET!

  • Bugsy

kendry morales? man, i knew the fans weren’t the smartest but that’s just dumb.

  • bobtaco

Kendry Morales is Tex’s main MVP competition? All PeteAbe readers voting tonight?

    • Dela G

pete abe had his family in CA vote for him

    • whozat

People are stupid and have short memories. They remember Morales driving in runs when the Yanks got swept by the Angels, but don’t remember Mauer and Morneau because we won some of those games.

    • http://theyankeeuniverse.com Moshe Mandel

      Kendry: .302/.349/.576 25HR 76 RBI
      Tex: .287/.385/.562 30 HR 86 RBI

Tex is better, but Morales is no joke- he is the probable MVP candidate on the next best AL team.

  • zs190

Would love another inning from Mitre, but he’s been looking shaky. Joba going tomorrow and chances are we’ll need 3+ innings from bullpen tomorrow too.

  • Ivan

I would think Mauer would be Tex most competitive player for the MVP.

    • David A

People are probably thinking winning team +good numbers=MVP. Twins are not really near playoffs at the moment.

  • Esteban

This was great. Mark Feinsand talking with Sterling and Waldman about the MVP race and Teixeira:

Feinsand: Some people are talking about defensive stats like UZR… Ultimate ZOne Rating.., Teixiera is negative
Waldman: I don’t know what that means
Feinsand: It means it’s a stat that doesn’t matter
Sterling: I’ll just go with what I see with my eyes everyday

    WOOOOOW

    • Dela G

you gotta love the radio crew

    • baravelli

Okay, I’m curious, can someone give me a good actual explanation for this: I don’t know exactly how UZR is calculated, but I have a firm belief in stats, even the ones Feinsand says don’t matter. However, I think RAB readers might tend to agree with Sterling here – we see Tex make great plays day in and day out, and feel like he plays a great first base. So, how do you reconcile the two – why is his UZR so low?

      • http://theyankeeuniverse.com Moshe Mandel

Tex makes great throws, has great range coming in and leaping, makes great scoops, and eats up everything within his general vicinity. He does not have exceptional lateral range (think, most of his great plays are not diving in the hole type or ranging far to his right). He is a very good first baseman, it is just that one particular thing that UZR weighs heavily is not his strongest point.

      • Bob Stone

Great question. I agree. How could his UZR be so low given how well we see him play everyday? I would also love to hear the explanation for this.

        • whozat

One of the weaknesses of UZR is that it’s poor at measuring things firstbasemen do. Most have few errors, because they don’t get to balls, so not making errors isn’t special as a 1B.

So, it’s mostly tied up in range, and while Tex makes a lot of flashy plays, I guess there are some balls that your average 1B gets to that he doesn’t. Possibly due to positioning or something, I dunno. But it makes no attempt to measure scooping throws, and admits it.

The perfect is the enemy of the good, and a lot of people who don’t like to think critically don’t understand that just because something doesn’t tell the WHOLE story doesn’t mean it’s useless.

I’d think that people who understand the numbers tend to give lesser weight to UZR for 1Bs.

          So, essentially, what Moshe said.

Also: FUUUUUUUCK. That is some shitty luck for Mitre.

      • Accent Shallow

I don’t have enough faith in defensive stats to take them as gospel, especially partway through the season.

(Alternatively, you could look at multiple stats, and combine those with your impressions/conventional wisdom)

    • LiveFromNewYork

GOODNESS GRACIOUS I DON’T KNOW WHAT THAT MEANS

    • http://www.riveraveblues.com Mike Axisa

I hate shit like that. “Yeah, I don’t agree with what this one stat says about this one individual player, so I’m just going to assume it’s wrong for everyone.”

  • Salty Buggah

Melky’s sucking but is getting unlucky lately too.

  • AJ

Girardi is a genius. We still need another starter though.

  • Dela G

molina and hairston have been geico money today!

  • Bugsy

molina’s ops is over 1.000 this game!

    • Little Bill

He will be the new DH vs. lefties.

  • Dorian

Did anyone hear Kenny Singleton just completely diminish John Flaherty?

    • Dela G

did he tell john the truth about his playing career?

      • VO

I was half listening but I believe Flaherty said “It’s always nice to get a hit” and Singleton said “How would you know”.

Of course I’m lying but that would be funny.

        • Dela G

          hahaha

      • Dorian

Flahrety was saying how a backup would like to get 12-15 RBI’s a year and Kenny chimed in with something along the lines of, “Yeah cuz the big boys drive in 20 in one month”

  • LiveFromNewYork

    Mother puss buckets

  • Ivan

I can live with Mitre going one more inning here.

  • Ivan

    Good pitching there by Mitre.

  • Dela G

    dayum!

griffey was made mitre’s bitch on that K

  • David A

Anyone know the status of Gardner?

    • Bob Stone

      Expected back in September.

  • Dela G

    kenny with the gems tonight

“he’s looking to lift and separate”

    • VO

I haven’t really been listening to the commentary just watching the game, but after this comment I turned my volume waaaayyy up.

      • Dela G

yeah its been quite funny with kenny tonight

  • Bugsy

    crazzzap.

  • LiveFromNewYork

OMg Mike Axisa was right, pull him now!

  • Salty Buggah

    cmon Mitre

  • southernyankeefan

I have a bad feeling Robertson is iffy coming in in the middle of an inning

  • Bugsy

hey look, they’re playing with fire.

    • Dela G

      shhhhhh

  • AJ

    What a nightmare.

  • Bugsy

unbelievable. mitre has some really bad juju.

    • LiveFromNewYork

The baseball gods went to lunch and when they returned they said “Is that Mitre doing well? Have to take care of that shit.”

  • Johan Iz My Brohan

    Ugh

  • Ivan

    Here comes Robertson.

  • Little Bill

2 cheap singles by that catcher. Just bad luck for Sergio.

  • southernyankeefan

Fuck that catcher that lucky ass hole

    • wilcymoore

Johnson runs pretty well for a catcher.

      • LiveFromNewYork

Still young. Cervelli runs well too

  • Dela G

    wow

    this sucks balls

Please d-rob, get mitre a win

  • Salty Buggah

    mitre getting unlucky again

  • wilcymoore

Mitre did pretty well. Now Robertson has to get the ball over the plate … no margin for error here.

  • Accent Shallow

    I’m terrified.

    • Dela G

      +1000000

  • David A

This got out of hand real quick.

  • Salty Buggah

    no walk D-Rob

  • LiveFromNewYork

can’t we make Mo the long man?

    • ShuutoHeat

      I was hoping for Swisher..

  • Alan

So weird to watch a game at this time on a weekend…
Why do they like Mitre so much?

    • Bugsy

he’s been mediocre. which is good.

  • Ivan

    Come on Robertson.

  • JSquared

    D-ROB THE BEAST!!

  • Salty Buggah

    BIG K!!!!!!!!!!

  • Bob Stone

    Great job D-Rob!!

  • Dela G

    DROB WITH THE FUCKING K!

  • Ivan

    Whooooo that was big.

  • Bob Stone

    Great K

  • Salty Buggah

WOW! we got lucky there a bit

    • Bob Stone

That third strike looked low to me. We did get lucky.

    • Salty Buggah

But I’ll take it every day

  • Bugsy

    hahhahaha.

what a bad call. o well. shit happens. that’s what framing a pitch can do.

  • whozat

    Wow, that was a GIFT.

  • David A

Wow thought that was ball 4.

  • http://www.riveraveblues.com Mike Axisa

The Night David Robertson Became A Man.

  • VO

    That looked low….I’ll take it.

  • Johan Iz My Brohan

    Amazing!

  • Chili Davis

Whoa, I think D-Rob might’ve gotten away w/ one there (looked low). Awesome nonetheless.

  • Jose

    Frame Job

  • Dela G

HOLY SHIT THAT WAS A LUCKY ASS STRIKE 3 CALL!!

    AMERICA, FUCK YEAH!

    • KG Sturnz0r – Camilo Gerardo

  • southernyankeefan

Phew think he got away with one there.

  • Dan

    We be blessed

  • Accent Shallow

I apologize for my lack of faith, Mr. Robertson.

  • wilcymoore

Ohhh … I don’t know about that strike 3. But good work by D-Rob. Now I gotta get some sleep.

  • LiveFromNewYork

    Robbed by Robertson

    Oh fucking well

  • Ivan

Think about it, D-Rob on alot of teams would be their Primary Set-up man or Closer. He’s our middle guy with just terrific stuff.

    • Zack

      hes no manny delcarmen

      /gammons’d

  • JSquared

CB Buckner said you have to swing the bat at a ball like that, GET SOME!!!

  • Salty Buggah

That was Mo’s way of balancing out the universe. Mitre gets unlucky and D-rob gets lucks to bail Mitre (and D-rob himself) out.

  • King of Fruity Hypos

    Drob +1

Key K there. Practice pressure much? :)

  • Riddering

That strike 3 call was so beautiful. It should be put in monument park.

  • LiveFromNewYork

That was totally Molina’s sleight of hand for the strike call.

    • JSquared

I think Molina could be a very good coach.

  • Salty Buggah

hah! I think someone yelled strike on that ball in the dirt to Swish

    • Dela G

lol yeah i heard that too

  • Camilo Gerardo

    did slade sign?

    • http://www.retire21.org Mike R. – Retire 21

      Expect something tomorrow.

    • http://www.riveraveblues.com Mike Axisa

Not yet, it’ll get announced Monday. $2M or so.

    • whozat

Totally, but nobody bothered to report it on any sites on the internet.

    • Johan Iz My Brohan

Not yet, but things look very good don’t worry. Expect everything as usual to go down to the wire.

  • LiveFromNewYork

People named Buckner are good at helping out NY teams

    • Bob Stone

      ietcvm

    • Bugsy

that cuz he’s got the shining!

  • Salty Buggah

    no DP Alex

  • Dela G

    Tex is so good

  • Salty Buggah

heh someone yelling at A-rod…called him Mr.April and told him to bunt

    • Dela G

      yeah i heard that too

      too funny

  • Dela G

i love how you can hear the fans in the crowd

    too funny

    • LiveFromNewYork

      They’re all drunk.

  • JSquared

    Good piece of hitting.

  • Dela G

what a nice hit by alex!

  • http://www.riveraveblues.com Mike Axisa

Damn. Damn damn damn. I thought that was going to get by Langerhans.

  • Salty Buggah

nice Alex…about time he got lucky on a basehit. Too bad that ball didnt get past the fielder. Cmon JoPo! no DP

    • Salty Buggah

      booo

  • JMK

Langer-whatever-his-name-is: “Hey guys, check out what I found! I caught it!”

    • JSquared

      He shouldve used a net…

  • Dela G

i called that DP to my little bro

  • JMK

Posada loves the DP. Can’t wait for his wife’s reality show.

  • VO

    Damn with the head injuries.

  • JSquared

wow, Red Sox threw at Kinsler… i hear the bandwagon crashing as we speak…

    • JMK

It would take a lot more than that for the bandwagon to crush, unfortunately.

      • JMK

        *crash

  • Accent Shallow

Holy shit, 95 mph from Robertson!

  • Yankee1010

C.B. is just so bad. D-Rob got a gift to get Langerhans for sure. Then he just painted the outside corner against Ichiro and nothing.

Yeah, you can say it all evens out, but he’s a major league umpire. Independent of it “evening out,” he should be competent, and he never has been.

    • Salty Buggah

well he didnt get the call several times last inning before the gift too

      • Yankee1010

Oh, I know. Bucknor is just abysmal.

  • Salty Buggah

    cmon Robo

  • Dela G

hey bucknor, where are all the calls now?

  • Bugsy

i ahve a feeling that girardi wont use hughes.

  • JMK

He may be getting a good look behind Molina, but he sure isn’t seeing where the ball ends up.

  • Salty Buggah

    Robo K!

    • http://www.riveraveblues.com Mike Axisa

      K-Rob?

      • Salty Buggah

I like it. That’s what we use from now on.

  • Bugsy

    that k/9 keeps rising.

  • Dela G

    damn

robertson’s fastball seem like 99 to these guys

  • LiveFromNewYork

Maybe we should make Drob a starter.

Why the F are the M’s fans so rowdy tonight?

    • Salty Buggah

      all that coffee

      • LiveFromNewYork

        IETC

    • JSquared

D-Rob did well enough, thank you. Time to smile with a Coke.

  • Dela G

now blow a fastball by him drob

  • Bugsy

    well…

  • southernyankeefan

BBTN blamed the stolen bases on Penny

    • JSquared

They Would. They seem to do the opposite most of the time.

    • http://www.riveraveblues.com Mike Axisa

What about the two off Cabrera?

      • Salty Buggah

Penny distracted Tek from the dugout

      • whozat

See, Penny, he…um, he got Varitek out of his rhythm, so it was still his fault.

  • Salty Buggah

    damn, I wanted another K

  • Brazilian Yankee

Robertson’s curve looks real sharp tonight.

  • Dela G

damn, i didnt think lopez would hit that

cmon, i would leave drob in there

    • whozat

He’s thrown a lot of pitches already.

This is kinda the pushbutton move, though. Let’s just hope Coke doesn’t give up a shot. He’s prone to that, and Branyan especially worries me.f

      • Dela G

        agreed

  • JMK

But they have 12 lefties coming up. Illogical!

  • Salty Buggah

would love a Junior K here

    • LiveFromNewYork

Delivered with a coke and a smile

  • LiveFromNewYork

I am not enjoying this game.

    • whozat

      No? This is exciting baseball!

  • JSquared

    GET SOME!!!

  • Bugsy

    love it. love it.

  • Ivan

    One more out Coke.

  • JMK

    I suddenly crave cheesecake. Juniors!

  • Salty Buggah

    one mo Cokey

  • Dela G

holy cow, he blew griffey away

  • Rich D.

Finish the inning Coke, then bring in Hughes for the 8th and Mo to close it out!

    GOT ICHIRO!!

    WOOOOOOOOOOO

  • Yankee1010

Thanks for failing Baseball 101, Ichiro.

  • Brazilian Yankee

Beauty by Molina. But what a stupid play by Ichiro.

  • Accent Shallow

How’s that for a piece of good luck. Woo!

(Why would you steal 3rd on Molina?)

  • Alan

    Gotta love Molina’s defense!

If it was varitek, he could steal home from 2nd.

      • JMK

        With a light jog.

        • Dela G

          lol ietc

      • PinstripesForeverDougie

        IETCVM

  • Ivan

Give Molina credit for making a terrific throw, but that was just awful baseball by Ichiro.

  • King of Fruity Hypos

    Name that Molina!!!

  • Bugsy

alex rodriguez took a nap before he applied the tag.

  • JMK

What is Buckner doing? Is that a new dance move? The Blind Stomp?

  • Bugsy

the king of bloops makes another bid…but falls short.

  • Bugsy

honestly, why is kenny doing yankee games? he obviously knows/cares more about the orioles.

    • Salty Buggah

      nah, I like him.

    • LiveFromNewYork

Because he said hairy played for them?

      • Bugsy

well he had his glory years with the Os. He knows a lot about them whenever the subject comes up. plus, he never played for the yankees. at least, flaherty played for the yankees. though i do think he’s far more bearable than michael kay, I still find him hokey.

    • whozat

I have never thought that Singleton knew too little about the Yankees or their organization as currently constituted. He knows baseball, and played against many of the great Yankees past. Who cares who he used to play for?

    • Ivan

I,ve always ask myself that. He has no affliation with the yanks and spent most of his career with the O’s. Nevertheless, I do enjoy him when he’s doing the games.

  • Ivan

    So who pitches the 8th?

Coke gets the lefty, and leaves Hughes for the other 2 hitters?

    • Little Bill

2 weak righies and a lefty after Branyan. If Coke gets Branyan, just leave him in!

  • Accent Shallow

Melk, how about an insurance run?

  • LiveFromNewYork

    Molina the base nazi

    NO BASE FOR YOU

    • PinstripesForeverDougie

      IETCVM, Giddy-up ;)

  • JMK

Wow! He looked lazy on that AB.

    • http://www.riveraveblues.com Mike Axisa

He needs a day off, he looks gassed.

      • JMK

Don’t tell Mrs. Cary. She has no use for a lazy Dominican with a nice, gritty white husband waiting at home.

        • PinstripesForeverDougie

You don’t mean?!!? Is Gritty Garner winning the all important Mr. Cary position. I hear it’s a very tight spot to nail;)

      • whozat

seriously. Jetlagged and exhausted. Not running hard on grounders, not swinging well.

    • Salty Buggah

He’s Dominican, what do you expect?

    • Chris

Your stupidity really knows no bounds.

  • southernyankeefan

Melky needs a day off badly

  • Dela G

    leche needs a day off

    • PinstripesForeverDougie

      Leche’s bat is turning sour

      • JMK

        Clumpy Cabrera.

  • King of Fruity Hypos

    Where is my hughes?!?!

  • LiveFromNewYork

wasn’t this guy just up? how does that work?

    • Dela G

if you are batting and the runner is thrown out, you get another at bat

    • baravelli

He was up when Ichiro was thrown out, so his at bat gets reset.

  • Ivan

    Filthy.

  • baravelli

Another spillover benefit of Molina’s great throw is that now Coke can face two lefties this inning, leaving hopefully just one more out for Hughes to get.

  • PinstripesForeverDougie

Coke is proud of his fastball & his slider.

  • Yankee1010

My name is C.B. Bucknor. I have neither the time nor the inclination to understand the outside corner.

    • JMK

But the swinging K doesn’t care for his misgivings.

    • whozat

Oh, come on…that FB from coke was outside.

Given the massive gift at the end of the 6th, I think we can’t complain about this guy’s zone.

  • Dela G

    wow another K

  • LiveFromNewYork

    We need gardy back

    • Dela G

well we will have to wait a little while longer

  • whozat

Let’s say Coke gets Hannahan. Do you leave him in to get the third out? Go to Mo for 4 outs? Use Hughes for one out? Bruney? Gaudin?

  • LiveFromNewYork

    It’s like 87 o’clock

  • Ivan

    Filth.

  • Dela G

    damn

    that was silly

  • Alan

    Man, our bullpen is GOOD!

  • Dela G

this has been an epic bullpen performance

this is like red sox bullpen in april/may type performance

  • Ivan

Wats that smell……is that 7.5 game lead.
