Game 120: Just a little blip, right?
By Joe PawlikowskiSo the Yankees have scored just three runs over their last two games, all coming in Sunday’s contest against Seattle. I was on a flight, and then in transit to a hotel, during most of yesterday’s game, but it seemed like they couldn’t get much going after A-Rod‘s double play — until the eighth that is, when Jorge struck out looking. I’m not sure what the game looked like, but Gameday said the ump was beyond atrocious. They’ll try to recover today by putting out their A-lineup, and that includes Hideki Matsui back in the DH spot.
Taking the bump for the A’s is Hackensack native Vin Mazzaro. Then again, with that name mentioning that he’s from Jersey is redundant. Recalled for a start on June 2, Mazzaro started off his career with a bang, tossing 13.2 scoreless innings over two starts, blanking the White Sox and the Orioles. Things got a bit tougher for him from then on, his ERA gradually climbing to 5.54. Somewhere in there the Yanks roughed him up for six runs in 4.1 innings while his high school buddies looked on from the upper deck.
Since then Vin has started four games, including two horrible ones against the Red Sox and Blue Jays. He allowed 19 runs, 18 earned, over 21.1 innings in that span, and opposing hitters have had a 1.008 OPS against him. Essentially, the average hitter against him over his last four starts has been Prince Fielder. Average. Or, if you want to play it another way, it would be like facing half Albert Pujols, half Ryan Braun.
Beware the reverse lock, thought. It cursed the Yanks last night against Brett Tomko and the A’s bullpen. Thankfully, they’re not taking Mazzaro lightly, considering the lineup.
Lineup:
1. Derek Jeter, SS
2. Johnny Damon, LF
3. Mark Teixeira, 1B
4. Alex Rodriguez, 3B
5. Hideki Matsui, DH
6. Jorge Posada, C
7. Robinson Cano, 2B
8. Nick Swisher, RF
9. Melky Cabrera, CF
And on the mound, number fifty-two, Carsten Charles Sabathia.

God dang the blue jays..
So a few weeks ago ESPN the Mag had an article claiming Yadier Molina was the best catcher in baseball (or something like that, I didn’t read it). In this weeks magazine, someone wrote into ESPN regarding the article. They wrote, “I always though Jason Varitek and Jorge Posada were the best catchers. But Molina’s stats make them look like scrubs”. As bad as that is, RESPN’s response almost made me shit myself.
That’s a bit harsh. Posada may not be having a banner year, but Varitek’s fielding percentage (.996) still makes him a top-five catcher
Are they on drugs???
Probably
Most definitely.
Don’t go bad mouthin’ drugs.
Cocaine is a hell of a drug.
DreDog, you’re a habitual line stepper.
GREAT movie.
. . . . I’m speechless.
Joe Mauer’s stats (offensively) make Molina look like Jose
drugs can’t possibly due that…
they’re on bullshit, the purest kind
Pure as the driven snow that shit there ‘init!
/Trainspotting’d
Wow the “A” lineup, havent seen this in awhile.
Need a win, baby.
I remember he was good against us the last time…that is until we faced him 2nd time through the order.
Wasn’t it CC, who is from near Oakland, against Mazzaro, who is from Jersey, facing him last time too?
“Taking the bump for the A’s is Hackensack native Vin Mazzaro. Then again, with that name mentioning that he’s from Jersey is redundant.”
You keep this up and I’ll start poking fun at old ‘buy a vowel’ on the Blue Jays!!
Well played sir!
Vin Mazzaro was an original member of the Four Seasons, I believe, now making history every night on Broadway in Jersey Boys. Seriously, though, I love the Yanks, but Joba stinks. He does NOT impress me. He doesn’t look very bright either. You need smarts to win consistently as well as ability.
Um, k? You seem like a rather dull bulb yourself, bub.
Yes, Manny is so good because he’s an intelligent player.
I miss Michael Kay, Singleton and Flarhety bore me.
Disagree.
bored>>>annoyed
Agree. I miss Cone.
Good Lord. Blue Jays really handed that to the Sox. Can’t wait until the league realizes how early Ortiz is getting his foot down and starting his swing in order to hit a fastball. I can’t wait to go into Fenway and spank their little cry baby bottoms.
What’s the beef people have with Michael Kay?
http://www.scottproctorsarm.co.....-game.html
That should give you a head start…
Kay is often immature to baseball…if I was watching a game with you I’d point out how his baseball wisdom is lacking. Jim Kaat has more baseball savvy in one finger than Kay owns in his entirety.
So Brandon Marshall has started his trade demands again (that or get gim a big contract extension now). I now he wants the money now but here’s a wild thought:
He saw Orton’s performance during training camp (got booed) and the 1st preseason game (3 picks in 3 first series) and lost faith in him. Now he thinks that if he plays with a sucky QB like that his stats will take a big hit. Since he is going to be a FA after the year, he doesn’t want to end up losing money because of his poor stats. So, he wants to get traded now so he could put up some awesome numbers again (if he has a decent QB) and will get a big payday.
Makes sense, no?
They had one of the best young QB-WR combinations for the next 7 years, yet they mess it up
Yea, damn McDaniels. But then again, Cutler is now is making me feel like that the trade was OK.
I loved out offense with Cutler, B-Marsh, Eddie Royal, and Scheffler with 2 of the best tackles in football in Clady and Harris. Things were looking up but everything has gone downhill from that moment.
He’ll be fine if he gets in camp and shuts his mouth. As a receiver on a team that’s poor defensively and probably won’t win a ton of games, his stats will be there at the end of the year. He’s done more damage to his paycheck with his off the field nonsense than having a subpar year this year will.
God, I wish my Ravens would trade for him even though he has a habit of laying the smackdown on his girlfriends.
Why are we talking about football?
Why not?
Damn thunderstorms. My YES signal is down.
Mine is real shaky.
How great would it be for Papshmere to blow this!
Jays just scored two against Papelschmuck in the eighth. Go Jays!
Go Jays. It delights me to see Paps sucking hard like this.
OhGodpleaseyes.
Walks the bases loaded…!
Scutaro ftw
What do you have to do to get Paul O’neil and his Food/Hot Yoga talk. I like people who make fun of Al Leiter, Kay doesn’t have the balls.
I like the way you think, Cowboy.
Yeah Baby, Fuckin Cowboy.
AL Leiter is too easy a target. Remember when he had a tie that only went down half way his shirt? Kay ripped him for that, but he has class. Nothing wrong with being professional.
HaHa, True, but O’Neil will argue with him about how Leiter’s wrong with something about baseball.
Kay also ripped O’Niell for saying “Shmoltz” for two days straight. Paulie just laughed it off and was genuinely surprised and amused. Because he can dish it out and take it.
Leiter on the other hand, gets all sensitive when someone disagrees with him or makes fun of him, and starts doing his ‘extra polite’ routine to tell the world he’s hurt. It makes you just want to smack him across the face and tell him to grow the fuck up.
Yea but at least he put Harold Reynolds in place about Joba being a starter.
Theyre loaded up.
Bases loaded for the Jays. Knock out Papelschmuck!
Mazzaro’s from Hackensack? I’m from Hackensack and about the same age as him so I dunno about that.
Sterling and Waldman said East Rutherford.
Who needs a house out in Hackensack? Is that all you get for your money?
I kept hearing Rutherford last time he pitched against the Yankees. If your parents lived in Rutherford, you were probably born at Hackensack Hospital, so that’s probably where the confusion is coming from.
Is there a bigger fraud than Brett Favre?
http://tinyurl.com/mymego
I’ll go with Favre. Palmeiro only lied (blatantly) once. Favre is nonstop bs, crying press conferences, plays for the love of the game (and $12 million), blah, blah, blah. Oh, and ridiculously overrated too.
What makes him a fraud?
http://whitewatch.files.wordpr.....05171c.jpg
Think I got ya there.
http://j-walkblog.com/images/ken_lay.jpg
It’ll be interesting to see what happens with the Yankees and Mazzaro tonight. They got to him later in the game last time so let’s see if that repeats itself tonight.
/commentator
Derek Jeter is good at baseball.
Oh cmon Lind.
good start Jete
….DAMNIT
effing warning track power!
DP turn fail.
Dang Lind flyed out to the warning track.
flyed= new word
you wonder why papelbon is slipping?
http://img200.imageshack.us/im.....bossux.jpg
picture is safe, no nudity
heh…how did I know that was the picture?
That’s a lot of pitches for Papelboner in the 8th. I’m betting that Toronto jumps on him in the 9th. Just keep it to 10-9.
Taking the bump for the A’s is Hackensack native Vin Mazzaro. Then again, with that name mentioning that he’s from Jersey is redundant.

Thataboy Jhonny
Am I the only one who noticed the subtle finger from Alex/
What the HELL IT WAS INTENTIONAL!!! Why the hell don’t the umpires do anything.
Argh.
I think the Rod needs a day off again.
Now let’s beam the A’s best hitter. Or their least horrible hitter. Whichever one
It’s times like these I wish the A’s had a slugger worth hitting.
/vengeful
Not that it was on purpose but, CC gonna handle that.
Yeah just throw behind…I can’t even think of anyone…
Just don’t risk getting thrown out. The umps have been so absurd this year.
WTF? He’s already hurt and slumping since…you wanna hurt him more?
Wait. Why didn’t he start crying and cursing and charge the mound?
I think he has dignity.
it doesn’t say ‘YOUKILIS’ on the back of his jersey
bad hip.
At least he can polish the fenders.
Because unlike Youk A-Rod knows he can beat the shit out of him and being A-Rod says its not worth it.
Scumbag Teams… Have Scumbag Players.
I hope A-Rod scores this inning.
I just hope he gets a hit. A line drive RBI double would do nicely.
Keep laboring, please.
A-rod’s gonna be sore going into Boston, so I hope they don’t hit him. And I hope he can still swing. It looks like he still hasn’t recovered from the earlier HBP in NY.
I wish I could believe Jorge won’t srike out on a breaking pitch.
No one saw that coming.
Mazzaro must be one of those Yankees fans that don’t like A-rod.
Nothing clutch about that.
What a disaster.
Oh, Jorge . . .
ALways on the breaking ball, horrible. Thanks For Nothing.
at least his pitch count is high
Aw c’mon JoPo.
that was a poor effort there by posada. how do you swing at that?
Because he is Jorge.
Dang, we let them off the hook again.
He is who we thought he was.
I hope CC knocks Scott Hairston out. ….Scott Hairston…really.
But he’s got family on the team! I say get Suzuki. He’s killed the Yankees and if you hit the catcher I think the pitcher will get the message.
This storm is getting REAL nasty right now in Bayside. Anyone else nearby?
Yeah I hear the blasts of thunder coming in Long Island.
That’s what I heard about 20 minutes ago. What till you see this shit.
Jorge is the new Pedro Cerrano.
ietc
damn, please hit with RISP from here on.
That almost hit his knees it was so far inside and he still swung. Think he might throw his out pitch in that spot Jorge? And they call him a guess hitter.
He’s had that hole in his swing for years, from both sides no less!
Jesus fucking christ. What the fuck? First last night ARod chokes with bases loaded, then Farve can’t seem to let go of football, and now Tostada whiffs. The universe is crashing.
bring back the ol’ OAKTAG?
Relax dude, I am joking. And really I think anyone that uses OAKTAG should OAKTAG themselves.
Why, what’s the matter with OAKTAG?
HOLY FUCK THUNDERSTORM STOP IT
No storm in Jersey
I’m in NNJ (Montclair) and it was definitely storming here
That’s nasty.
Peace, Adam.
i really like this CC.
Wow, never realized this but Jorge’s splits this year are ridiculous
Home: .324/.390/.622
Road: .221/.299/.359
Well there goes his MVP bid…
Going with the breaking ball early?? I like changing it up like that once and a while.
How does Rajai Davis have a .368 OBP?
Looking southeast from Bergen county i see the constant lightning! geez whats it like under that
Thank you Nick Green.
what happened?
Take note Mr. Castillo
oh shit!! look at arod smile.
YEAH CC, SCARE A BITCH!!!
TRY CHARGING AT CC!!!!!
LMAO A-Rod smiling. Wtf Sabathia didn’t even hit him.
A-Rod is so happy right now.
tell em CC
WHAT’D i MISS?!?!
Put YES on all cable
CC brushed Suzuki for retaliation but then gave up a HR on the next pitch
fuck.
Kurt Suzuki wins.
Yep. Tip the cap, nice job by Kurt.
That’s the way you do it, not charge the mound like a whiny bitch.
Guess Suzuki didn’t take kindly to being thrown behind.
http://riveraveblues.com/2009/.....ent-538009
Told ya! Gotta hit Suzuki.
Wait….shit. This guy so kills the Yankees.
Alex just said, Fuck you Oakland, CC has got my back.
I like it, finally a Yankees staff that doesn’t let their hitters get abused.
WOW THAT IS SO FUCKING ANNOYING
well that sucked. should have hit in the shitter.
YEAH Jorge, call a hit on suzuki than call a high fastball… Genius.
Jorge called for the HBP? I don’t think so. ALso, he called for a low and inside fastball, not a high one.
I’m sorry, but that HR had nothing to do with Posada.
Totally Jorge’s fault that CC missed his spot.
You don;t call a fastball anywhere near the plate when u miss a HBP… whether it was CC or Jorge going for the HBP you dont call another fastball inside where Suzuki is looking for it, Sabathia didnt set up the pitch.
that didnt work out like planned…
the fuck? Suzuki? nothing is going our way right now
well, expect seeing papelbon blown save.
Johan to Sandoval all over again.
yankees just got abused and used. Joke is now on them.
true. might as well forfeit the season.
Last place sucks.
You guys are just on a roll tonight. Did one loss last night and a homerun in this game suck the life out of everyone’s sense of humor. Jesus Christ. Lighten the fuck up tonight people. Have some fun, the team is in first place and is going to win the division. I guess I logged into the “only serious baseball talk blog” tonight. Might as well take your One A Day and go to bed.
u the one cussin an bussin
Sorry, I don’t understand what you are saying.
You are the one cussin’ and bussin’. Tough to read, I know.
CC = fail
Amazing. Just amazing.
That ball was obliterated… Its good to be Kurt Suzuki right now.
C.C. just got worked.
ominous. very ominous.
A’s can go fuck themselves. I fucking hate it when A-Rod or Jeter specifically gets hit. 10 run inning pl0x.
Vernon Wells is truly a waste of a baseball player.
well i just got back from canada. Maybe me being in canada for 3 days and nights was a bad luck sign
i’m back in ohio and ready to finally watch the yanks
Damn you kurt suzuki
thats great. I was hoping you’d make some prediction last night
i’ll be back to my predicting ways sooner or later… haha
I hate Vernon Wells, first pitch swinging
GO YANKEES!
Loving it? He gave up a homerun afterwards its embarassing.
What is Cano doing? The dude who couldn’t lay down a bunt for his life tries to bunt for a hit?
i hate the UMPz I really fucking hate the umpz
Honest to God. What is with their overall suckiness this season! It’s completely absurd.
That shit wasnt even close. ugh. umpires suck.
FUCK THESE UMPS from the whole year
This would be a fine day for Girardi to get tossed. That call to Cano was just as bad as the one to Damon yesterday.
It’s worked for him in the past.
right over the right handers batter’s box. ridiculous!
That pitch was outside.
WTF was that pitch
It patted the outside corner… of the other batter’s box.
at this point, if the ball flew by the atlantic coast… it would still be safe.
i mean a strike.
Does the yard lines bother anyone else??
this fucking stadium is a fucking crap shoot
Well, the whole building bothers me.
Agreed.
The Oakland Alameda County Coliseum (or any of the corporate names attached to it) is a dump. A bad place for football, a horrible place for baseball.
Football stadiums suck. Oakland, Minnesota, Florida, etc… I feel sorry for them.
Yes – It’s annoying. Baseball always takes a backset to Football these days.
i dont like this losing nonsense.
and neither does melky
Break out MELKY!!!!
MELKY HAS A PULSE!
Melky read Ben’s post today.
the MELK MAN!
woot woot, attaboy melk
Hey, Melky got a hit! Maybe things are changing for the Yanks!
Can we get an RAB thread about how much A-Rod sucks?
/reverse jinxed
I’ve said this already once today: his SLG is below .500. This concerns me.
What concerns me more is that he’s going to need another hip procedure when the season is over. There’s a non-zero chance he’ll never be the same player.
(Of course, Utley just had the procedure Mr. Rod will be having, and he’s fine. So maybe A-Rod will be ok)
Melky says: Take that RAB! haha.
Ugh, I hate blackouts.
If you have a blackout how are you on the computer?
Never used a computer drunk?
We all know what you were doing with that computer while drunk, pat, and you should be ashamed of yourself.
You’ll go blind.
woohoo a well hit ball by melky finally falls in…cmon Jete drive him in
cmon jete, you got it man
jejejejeje
Let’s go Derek!
RBI!! RBI!! RBI!!
Adam Kennedy is not having a good night.
damn the red sox…
ha ha
Because that’s what last place team’s should do!
TIE GAME!!
I HEART THE CAPTAIN!… and the 3B…
Reminds me of the play against the Mariners, except Jeter hit this ball a lot harder.
JETER!!!!!!
Sox just won
SUCK IT A’S!!!
they should be running all over this guy.
Things beginning to go our way again.
Mazzaro’s coming up on 50 pitches here.
that was not a strike. fuck you, ump.
Toronto could go fuck themselves. They have guys like Vernon Wells and Rod Barajas who have no baseball skill and swing at first pitch strikes. This is why they suck sooo bad.
TIE GAMEE DEREK!!
At least the nation has a little more heart burn from watching papelbon.
Blue Jays rally = fail.
They have given in to the idea that you must swing at first pitch strikes at closers who have thrown over 30 pitches and walked the previous batter.
Fuck this ump. What the fuck is he looking at? Sorry for sounding liek a prick but I’m tired of this BS.
Know, not at all….you’re saying what I’m thinkin’!
ur not sounding like a prick dude, I wanna fucking kick the UMPS in the mouth
“jejejejeje”
cmon Big Texy…be sexy
GREAT HIT AND RUN!
LETS GO TEX!
That’s a hit because jeter was on the move.
that’s a hit because the pitcher didn’t cover first.
Mazzaro fail. That was great range by Ellis.
A fucking goatshit thrower in a shit stadium. For some reason I HATE them right now, I can smell their stink from here.
But tell us how you really feel…
PFP FAIL
C’mon Teixy
Defense
Oakland has none..
GO TEX!
oh well, at least we tied it. Cmon CC, shut em down from here
What is a Koozie?
beer holder
A sexy beer holder?
Foam thing that keeps beer cans warm. Used primarily by rednecks of the deep south and northeastern lax bro’s, most of the time in conjunction with croakies and/or vineyard vines.
pat loves him some warm beer
I drink em fast enough that they don’t get warm.
/hardcore harry
// possible drinking problem
I don’t understand why Americans are obsessed with cold beer. I actually prefer warm beer. I can taste it, which, you know, I like.
whats wrong with a lax bro?
Absolutely nuthin. Many of my best friends are lax bros.
EARNHARDT!!!
Pat, for us rednecks your warm=cold
hahah
wow that was a lucky pop up… he was very close to nailing that to a gap
Part of me kind of sort of wants Teixeira to bat from the right side soon so he can quit uppercutting the ball halfway out of the infield and start hit line drives into gaps and such.
The evil part of me…
wow.
no MVP for you!
Bad News: Sox won
Great News: Bard still ruined by Damon, Tex & Co.
Who remembers Good Nomar?
Oh well, that was out of the end zone anyway. It’s OK Tex.
We really need to work on our red zone offense(or defense?).
CC to Tex: It’s OK. I like strikeouts more.
Peace, NOMAAAAAAAH
Do the Angels ever lose?”
Best offense in baseball. Outscored the Yankees by 20 runs and have played 3 less games than them. Pitching though usually their strong point pretty shitty this season.
Peace, Mark.
Lol I thought the inning was over with the music?
2 outs YES.. 2 outs
haha. oh the yes crew. are they liek a bunch of rookies this year.
Well that’s just fantastic.
ah damn, cmon CC. Bandbox…
fucking everett??? fuck this
Ergh.
seriously?
who the hell are these people hitting HRs off him
that’s a big fella
CC has missed two spots badly tonight and they have both been crushed to left.
Have they really hit both mistakes…all two of them…for home runs? This series is starting to PISS me off.
Wow! Is CC missing his spots or is his velocity down? It can’t be that the A’s hitters are all that good. Can’t be.
Ehh 2 mistakes that were hit for homers.
he only missed like 3 times this game and 2 of those left the field of play.
Bad luck I guess.
Who the hell is this Tommy Everidge.
wow… when cc gives them up, he gives up absolute bombs.
OK, CC shut em down from here now
Sonofabitch again.
At these are solo shots. Could be much worse.
Jesus Christ. Come on CC- Two chumps hitting bombs, wtf
Oh no, Yankees are…..
CC, next time you strike out the side, how about no bombs in there?
No big deal if Yankees lose tonight, they have Gaudin starting tomorrow….
Gaudin is an ex-A, maybe he’ll be as motivated as Tomko was.
Peace, Ryan.
damn
CC is dealing when he isnt giving up BOMBS
Three strikeouts and a homerun in the inning for CC. Talk about extremes.
He’s getting in touch with his inner Javier Vazquez.
4 K’s! cmon A-rod
hey that joe mauer really making his case for MVP tonight.
4-5-6 up this inning. I can has runs?
i’m formign a hit squad to take out this umpire among others. you guys in?
Dude, put me down!
I wanna kick them in the mouth and ask them “so was that a ball or a strike?”.
Good D from Sweeney, that looked like a double off the bat.
Arod!
A-Rod with the booming single
Wow he didn’t hit A-Rod there. I’m surprised.
Good swing, by A-Rod. That was a great job by Sweeney to keep that from getting to the wwall.
Nice Alex. I love it when he goes opposite field for hits. Cmon Hideki no DP.
I enjoy seeing Alex go the other way, but not as much as I enjoy Jeter pulling the ball.
Mazzaro is definitley in for a quick hook tonight.
Ugly Hideki. Ugly.
When he is slumping he is not pretty to watch.
Even when he’s going well, no one looks worse on a swing and miss than Hideki.
I hope this ump gets hit in the pp 2 nite.
that’s if he has a PP to begin with, yes I went there
LMFAO
what the fuck was that swing?
nice baserunning Alex…cmon Jorge
Matsui not feeling like a walk tonight. Huh.
Nice advance, A-Rod.
he totally did not get matsui
never mind
he did
matsui should have gotten a sympathy call on that one.
Woot RISP hit!
Shelley tonite 3-4, 2 R, 2 2B, 1 3B, 4 RBI (82)
Nice D there from Hairston. Heh.
Interesting defense there.. haha
omigod I can’t believe we scored
nice JoPo…cmon Swish
Wow Matsui, just wow, you swing at balls 4 and 5???
YAY POSADA!!!!!
based on the called strike on Cano in the first inning, those could have been strikes. This is where shitty umpiring dictates the game.
Way to be, Hairston.
First pitch swinging, Robbie?
Oy vey.
Hits .320 but no real value in a lineup. Might as well be Wade boggs.
Well this is certainly a game for all little leaguers to watch and see how the fundamentals of baseball are executed.
That was a terrible play in left field. Hairston should have had that ball.
Is it still too early to consider Robbie’s AVG with RISP anything but a coincidence?
Anything but.
Anything but.
Robbie thought his AVG with RISP was a little high there so he figured he might swing at the worst pitch possible and make a quick out. Good stuff.
Why does Robbie suck so bad with runners on?
jesus christ. wtf was that.
Posada. WTf?
That was a bummer.
Jorge…fail.
posada
you moron
Posada has made 2 bad plays this game already.
More great baserunning from Posada
