what are the odds Mo has to pitch in this one ?

    • http://bronxbaseballdaily.com Matt ACTY/BBD

If Mariano Rivera has to pitch in this game, I will rip someone’s head off.

    • JMK

If it gets to a save situation Girardi will put him in.

    • BigBlueAL

Dunno about pitching but the odds are good he will at least start warming up.

  • Bugsy

3 more innings of this nonsense.

to think, i was actually having fun.

  • Johan Iz My Brohan

The pitching and offense has been wonderful… defense, not so much.

    • BigBlueAL

      Pitching hasnt been wonderful.

      • Johan Iz My Brohan

for the most part, besides Bruney of course, Pettitte was getting it done.

    • JMK

Eh, I wouldn’t call the pitching “wonderful”. It’s been okay, but we wouldn’t be calling it wonderful if we hadn’t scored so many runs.

      • Yankee Von Homerdinger

Hasn’t been, he said hasn’t been.

        • JMK

No, he didn’t. BigBlueAL said it hasn’t been.

  • http://www.riveraveblues.com Mike Axisa

Heh, barely a blip on the radar.

good, is it sad that that actually makes me feel better, probably. lol

  • Dave

    Can I has more bowden?

  • theyankeewarrior

good game or bad, these have to last 5 hours

  • Dela G

    hahaha that’s hilarious

  • Chili Davis

    Jim Rice just got destroyed.

    • danny

      what happened?

  • http://bronxbaseballdaily.com Matt ACTY/BBD

    JIM. RICE. FAIL.

    Adrian Wojahoeohoeihaissk win.

  • baravelli

I’ll say it again: When it was 9-1, I was ecstatic. When it was 12-4, I felt a little unsettled. Now that it’s 15-7, I feel downright nervous. An 8-run lead is a tricky thing.

  • Salty Buggah

well, if we make our plays (Robbie and Melky), there’s no runs given up.

    Great story by Kay! HAHAHAHAHA!

  • Yankee Von Homerdinger

    Showing off the wheels !!!!

  • http://www.riveraveblues.com Mike Axisa

A-Rod would have a two jack night if this was in the Bronx.

  • Dela G

to say a-rod is on fire is an understatement

    • Bugsy

it’s only one game (not to diminish his performance)

  • Bugsy

jesus, they’re really ripping into jim rice. good and go arod (who I mistakenly bench in fantasy tonight out of shear negligence. go me! )

  • Salty Buggah

WOW! A-rod triple? been a while

  • Brazilian Yankee

A-Rod says “Bad hip my ass”

  • JMK

Cody Ransom would have caught that.

  • Tom Zig

    12-20 with RISP? yikes

  • Riddering

A-Rod says: suck my bad hip!

  • Dela G

that michael kay story of jim rice was one of the best

    16-7!

    • http://www.theyankeeuniverse.com/ The Artist

Yeah, that was good stuff. What phonies some of these guys are.

    • JMK

According to the Michael Kay drinking game, that story calls for at least 4 drinks.

  • http://and-that-happened.blogspot.com Evan

    Good job responding, offense.

  • Chili Davis

A-Rod went about that triple the wrong way. Hopefully no little leaguers saw it.

    • Andy In Sunny Daytona

Last time Arod had a triple, Peter Gammons had a fully functional brain.

      /Crossing the line’d

So he would have to go 6-6 to hit for the cycle in this game? He isn’t Ian Kinsler.

  • Dave

Can someone summarize Kay’s Rice story, didnt catch it

    • http://bronxbaseballdaily.com Matt ACTY/BBD

Basically, Jim Rice told a bunch of young kids a while ago that his favorite part of being a ballplayer was getting paid.

      • Pasqua

I heard it was “getting LAID.”

        • JMK

          /Wilt Chamberlain’d

          • http://bronxbaseballdaily.com Matt ACTY/BBD

            IETC

    • Chili Davis

Adrian Wojnarowski, who writes for Yahoo.com, dug up an old Red Sox game program. In it, Rice said his favorite part of being a ballplayer was the “first and 15th of the month,” obviously referring to payday. Thus, everything he said about Jeter et al went up in smoke.

      • http://www.theyankeeuniverse.com/ The Artist

Right, and that was in response to him knocking today’s players for just playing for money. He actually praised Jeter as ‘one of the few’ who could have played back then.

    • baravelli

Somebody wrote in to the booth, and remembered that in an old Red Sox yearbook, back in the day, there were quotes of interviews with the players, and they were asked what their favorite part of being a major leaguer was. Rice’s answer was “The 1st and 15th of the month.”

      • danny

        lol wat a fail

  • Pasqua

    Cano pouts. He really does.

  • theyankeewarrior

If this was NY A-rod would be going for a 3 HR game. Since it’s fenway, he can get the cycle.

I’ll take 3 HR’s all day so that means Yankee Stadium >>> Fenway

    There take that

  • Dela G

    anyone watching the cowboys/titans game?

    the ref just said:

“False start, everyone but the center”

    epic

    • Chili Davis

      hahahhaha, hopefully that gets YouTubed.

    • JMK

How does that even happen? Does someone on the line have a seizure, ends up distracting everyone but the heartless Center?

      • Dela G

yeah everyone just jumped off the line. It was funny to watch

  • Eirias

Does that extra run help, baravelli?

    • baravelli

Yeah, well, now that it’s a 9-run lead, I’m not sure exactly how to feel…

  • Salty Buggah

So A-rod was 2 ft away from a cycle (1 ft for the HR, 1 ft for being safe at 2nd) or if in the bronx, he’d have 2 HR and a 2B and a single with a walk.

  • Tom Zig

Marte for the 8th? Who else hasn’t worked in a while?

  • http://bronxbaseballdaily.com Matt ACTY/BBD

    No range.

I’ve never seen a manager as upset to be up by nine runs. Can’t blame him, though. Saying this game is sloppy is a huge understatement.

  • Frank

Get Bruney out of this fucking game. A 9 run lead and he can’t throw a fucking strike.

  • http://bronxbaseballdaily.com Matt ACTY/BBD

First pitch slider 10 feet outside to Nick Green. Nice.

  • Tom Zig

Can’t anyone throw a strike out there?!?

  • Januz

The got very lucky bases loaded DP ball. They need this game real bad. If Boston finds away to comeback and win, you are likely looking at a Sox sweep (Blowing an 11 run lead would prove they can’t win in Boston). If they hold on, all they need is a split, and they will have taken 10 road games (Including 3 in Fenway) right off the schedule, and picked up ground on Boston while doing it. Will this clinch the division? Not in the least. MLB chose to give the Yankees 3 trips to the West Coast, and that Seattle & Anaheim trip (Followed by 3 at home with Boston), might be more difficult than this current trip.

  • Johan Iz My Brohan

I want Marte right now, I don’t care if those runs come in with him on the mound. Get Bruney off of it.

      Yep.

  • BigBlueAL

I’ll say it again, OMG Mitre is warming up.

      • Bugsy

holy shit, mitre is warming up.

        • BigBlueAL

          Told you so!! lol

  • Tony

The Red Sox could find a way to hit back to back grand slams and NYY would still be up.

Chill the fuck out, Damaso got this.

    • Tony

Told you. Now go to sleep and come back tomorrow at 4.

  • http://bronxbaseballdaily.com Matt ACTY/BBD

    I hate Brian Bruney.

    • Bugsy

remember when we were all gushing over him when season started. remember?

  • Salty Buggah

I dont know why most of you guys are panicking…we’re good. It’s frustrating but as long as we win (and we will) it’s aite.

    • Zack

no one’s concerned about the win, its about using too many guys from the bullpen when you have multiple 9 run leads

    • http://and-that-happened.blogspot.com Evan

      Panicked? No. Annoyed? Yes.

Francona made a huge error pulling Drew, Bay and Youkilis out of the game so early. Bruney is alling he could to let them back in this game. 16 runs scored so far and you can bet your ass you’ll Mo in this game.

    • Tony

Only because Girardi has a mental disorder.

      • Don

        What’s the Yanks’ record again?

        • Tony

What’s that got to do with Joe Girardi looking like he just escaped from a psych ward during any game (regardless of score) past the 6th?

          • Don

Rather his look than the Joe Torre Green Tea Sleep-along.

  • Johan Iz My Brohan

It’s a fucking miracle, I enjoy this game again, even if he gives up those runs.

Well if you knew how to read they’ve been saying an effective Marte is a boost to the team. Don’t make shit up in your head.

    • Steve H

Is your name a joke? Or do you really want one of those guys in the pen? Just trying to figure out whether to take your posts seriously.

  • Frank

Who would have figured. Marte is out all season and he comes in to get 2 huge outs. Great job. Meanwhile, Bruney took three steps back just when it looked like he was getting back on track.

    • http://www.theyankeeuniverse.com/ The Artist

Its just one bad outing, I wouldn’t make too much of it.

    • Tony

I don’t think huge outs exist in 9 run games.

    • Tony

      Melky’s baseball IQ is like… 4

      • Chris

Which is double your regular one.

  • OrangeCountyYanker

    I vote for Marte.

  • JobaWockeeZ

Yikes I saw Bruney with 0 outs and bases loaded and now Marte with bases loaded. Who was the one loading them up?

    • OrangeCountyYanker

      Bruney

      • JobaWockeeZ

Both times? Or did Pettitte also load them up?
        Yanks pitching dangerously tonight.

        • http://www.teamnerdrage.com leokitty

Pettitte left with runners on due to some amazing defensive play (plus an actual hit) by the team, Bruney walked in a run and then loaded them up all by himself in the 7th.

          • JobaWockeeZ

            Oh damn, thanks.

  • Nels

Our answer to the Sox getting Wagner?

    Marte.

I hope he watches this game and refuses to waive his NTC.

        • Dela G

          same here

        • Zack

its his only chance at WS so he’ll take it.
he wants to close next year, so that means he needs to take huge paycut and sign with a team like the Marlins, Natinals, Brewers, or DBacks

          • Johan Iz My Brohan

I wouldn’t mind seeing him on the Nats

      • http://www.theyankeeuniverse.com/ The Artist

I hope they do. Met fans will tell you he’s horrible in high leverage spots, and always has been. Plus, the Sox have plenty of relievers, he doesn’t make a big difference to them. I think its more of a block move if it goes down.

  • http://www.theyankeeuniverse.com/ The Artist

Anyone have a theory as to why The Angels beat their pythag year after year lately?

    http://www.beyondtheboxscore.com/2009/8/21/997250/the-angels-and-pythag

    • DF

I can’t remember where I read it, and a quick Google search isn’t turning it up, but didn’t Bill James suggest once that good baserunning could allow a team to outplay their Pythag? The Angels are pretty fast, and they seem like they’re always going first to third.

      That’s my pet theory, anyway.

      • http://www.theyankeeuniverse.com/ The Artist

I’d like to go with “Great bullpen” like they had last year, but unfortunately their bullpen blows.

        http://espn.go.com/mlb/stats/team/_/stat/pitching/split/128/league/al

        • DF

Yeah that was always my standard answer, until I looked at their stats this year.

Maybe Mike Sciosca really is the amazing manager that McCarver and Joe Morgan keep telling me he is?

          • DF

Ahem, and now that I’ve read the linked article, I see the author offered all the same opinions that I did, and I have added nothing to the conversation.

Heh Mitre, thank god its a blowout game though I’ll still love a good outing.

Probably the only time where I’d love a starter staying in the bullpen.

  • GG

So does this mean Gaudin is officially the fifth starter?

    • http://www.theyankeeuniverse.com/ The Artist

Nah, with Joba getting 9 days between some starts they’ll both get work here and there.

  • http://www.theyankeeuniverse.com/ The Artist

Really like using Mitre here. Save the pen for tomorrow.

  • JMK

If Mitre pitches well in this instance, will people clamor for him to be the 8th inning set-up guy?

    • Keanu Reeves

      I will lead the charge.

    • Tom Zig

I don’t care who is in the 8th inning role, as long as they get outs.

      • Keanu Reeves

        Agreed.

  • Dela G

    wow mitre getting outs

  • Mr.Jigginz

    Mitre,1,2,3…Makes sense.

    Mitre owns the 8th.

  • GG

21 hit so far tonight…the sox just have too much depth I guess

  • JMK

  • Dave

    Lolz.

  • Dela G

    wow

  • baravelli

I was just in the middle of typing this – I swear – when Hideki hit that:

Wouldn’t it be funny if the final score wound up being 19-8?

    • baravelli

      Well, never mind that.

    20 09

    Lets end it here!

  • Tom Zig

Congratulations Boston, on scoring on Sergio Mitre…some accomplishment

    • ShuutoHeat

      you forgot the golf clap

  • danny

    pleaseeeeeeee just end.

  • Kara

    No mas, por favor.

  • http://www.riveraveblues.com Mike Axisa

Relax guys, the only reason Mitre’s giving up bombs to Varitek and Ortiz is because he wants the Sox to think they still have something left and will play them every day. Team player, that Sergio.

    • Bugsy

you can add lowell to that list

  • Bugsy

    bring in mo

  • Tony

Sergio just making sure that you’re aware of his crappiness.

    • JobaWockeeZ

He blinded me for that inning. Now I can see again…

  • Tank the Frank

Tomorrow’s game will be 1-0 in 13 innings.

  • David A

my god. Can this game end. We are only leading by 9 now.

  • Dela G

    Holy shit

    mitre sucks so much

  • Brazilian Yankee

    Mitre fucking sucks.

  • Ivan

    Thats new, Mitre sucks.

  • tthth

Mitre is an absolute piece of shit

  • JSquared

DFA him while he’s on the mound.

  • AJ

I want to quote the killer from Dumb and Dumber when Harry and Lloyd were singing Mockingbird. ENOUGH!!!

  • Tom Zig

Now why you gotta go and do that for

  • Kara

Mitre trying to get a save opportunity for Mo.

  • AJ

Great now they’re going to hit one of ours.

  • Dave

    There are no words

  • brian

    he has completely lost it…

  • Rice Eats Paint Chips

I don’t know if Mitre should pitch for us again after this…

  • GG

    He can’t start again

  • Karl

HBP? Give me a break. They need to get Mitre out of there or we will never finish this game.

  • Ivan

Mitre is really fucking up the yanks run differental.

  • Pasqua

“The Red Sox refused to go down to defeat in their fabled rivalry without reminding the Yankees that they could still play, and that they should not be underestimated. Even in a loss, the heart of a lion beat strong, and proved that it will not stop.”

    • brian

how the hell is espn so biased? isn’t it like half way between NYC and Boston?

      • Pasqua

        Huh?

  • AJ

    bout time.

  • Ivan

Final score, Jets 20, Pats 11……..oh wait.

    • JMK

      Giants, you meant to say.

  • mustang

That’s the best pitched game in the history of baseball.
    LMAO

  • Dela G

thanks mitre, you fucking took forever

  • Johan Iz My Brohan

    Get Mitre off this team

    YANKEES WIN!!

  • LiveFromNewYork

Normally I’d be happy in a 20 run game but what the hell was that?

  • danny

    offense= fucking awesome
    pitching= fucking horrible
defense= got sloppy with the big lead

but a win is a win no matter how ugly!

    • DreDog

      Dr. Seuss would be proud!

    • JobaWockeeZ

Well Bruney hasn’t been great lately. So I understand why he sucked tonight. Damaso was good. Pettitte was bad but hey he can’t pitch 1 to 2 run games all the time so I’m not concerned. And Mitre is well…Mitre. Yanks can use Coke, Hughes, Mo, Ace and Robertson with Burnett tomorrow so I’m not worried about the pitching.

Hope the offense carries on to tomorrow.

  • Ivan

Yo check out the Box score of the yanks…..Looks like video game #’s when they r going against Mike A. in MLB The Show.

    • http://bronxbaseballdaily.com Matt ACTY/BBD

      OOOOOOOOOOOOH SNAP!

    • VO

      Ban’d

    • Dela G

      hahaha fo real

    • Ivan

      I Keed of course.

    • Tom Zig

      pwnage

  • Dave

Wow Kay and singleton are trying their hardest to Jinx the shit out of the yanks

    • Rice Eats Paint Chips

Hah, you noticed that too? I wish they would stop saying “the yankees have never ever given up a 7 game lead” SHHHHH!!!!

  • paulc

unreal…why not put in DROB for the 9th??? mitre threw a great 8th…and bruney—freakin a throw strikes!!!

  • teixburnathia

What was the sense in keeping bowden in for that long. I don’t really think that built any character

    • Bob Stone

To make matters worse for the kid, they sent him down to the minors right after the game. That’s not going to help his confidence. I feel bad for him, but too bad ’cause he’s a BoSox.

    • Tom Zig

haha not a character building exercise at all. He was just scarred for life. The Yankees…ruining highly touted sox prospects one at a time. First Bard, then Bowden.

      • Dela G

        don’t forget tazawa

      • Bob Stone

Don’t forget that they got to Tazawa too at the Stadium. And Smoltz and Traber were DFA’ed after the Yankees knocked them out both out in the same game.

        • mike jones

Yeah but according to Peter Gammons Bard is still the next mariano rivera

    • danny

      they chase wright’d his ass.

  • Tom Zig

Its almost like these offensive outbursts work against us. Our starters lose effectiveness and then we burn through our bullpen. Albeit we only used Brun-dizzle, The triumphant return, and meat-ray.

  • danny

    15 for 25 w/ RISP, DAMNNNN

    • Dela G

      holy shit

  • mike jones

ANother thing about this win is that the yankees did it with only 2 homeruns (even though several hits came close)
