  • Tampa Yankee

They did not mention it much after the fact on ESPN (and maybe this is the baseball player in me still) but that is why you hit the cutoff man from the OF. If Baldelli hits VMart, Tex stays at first and ARod’s 6-3 groundout becomes a 6-4-3 double play. Bad baseball right there… but… I’m not complaining that’s another run fot the good guys.

    • http://and-that-happened.blogspot.com Evan

There’s been a fair bit of bad baseball this weekend.

    • Zack

they mentioned it as ARod was walking to the plate. said baldelli messed up, missed pedroia- allowing Tex to move to 2nd and took away the DP

So very, very true on all counts.

        • Accent Shallow

          Semi agree.

At least in the Moneyball debate, one side isn’t obfuscating. (Those that realize Moneyball was about market inefficiencies, not about fat guys that walk)

    • Jack

      Wait, what did he say?

      • whozat

That the Red Sox “used to” buy into the Moneyball philosophy, but Ellsbury has brought the stolen base back to Boston.

        A) that shows that he totally missed the point — like many — and believes that Moneyball was about taking walks and hitting home runs. It wasn’t.
        B) They won two world series that way. Is focusing on OBP and SLG supposed to be a bad thing?

        • Jack

For someone who has never read the book, he sure talks about it a lot.

        • http://twitter.com/tsjc68 tommiesmithjohncarlos a/k/a Ridiculous Upside

          Exactly.

The Beane “Moneyball” philosophy is about using detailed statistical analysis to evaluate players more efficiently to operate a small market team better by finding and exploiting market efficiencies.

It naturally necessitates thus constantly changing the type of players you value. No player is ever a “moneyball player”. Because that concept is not fixed, it’s flexible.

True story: All proceeds from Fenway Park are donated to charity and the grass actually absorbs all the carbon dioxide in the city of Boston, making the park an environmental marvel.

Yankee Stadium III was built using child slave labor and required a forest the size of Australia to be chopped down, and 100 homeless people who lived on the site were assassinated to make way for the new park. And the Yankees reinvest the profits in coal plants in China and nuclear arms technology for Iran and North Korea.

          • Salty Buggah

            offense? really? wow

            • KW

.361 wOBA for Cano, .360 for Pedroia. Call it even. Defense is not close. Also, see word: combined.

          • http://twitter.com/tsjc68 tommiesmithjohncarlos a/k/a Ridiculous Upside

            Pedroia, career OPS+: 111
            Cano, career OPS+ 111

            Pedroia: 40.5M through 2014 + option for ’15
            Cano: 30M through 2011 + options for ’12 and ’13

Pedroia’s a better defender. That’s it. Everything else is a wash. And I think Cano ages better than Pedroia. His swing is too violent.

            • KW

              Career wOBA:

              Pedroia: .364
              Cano: .346

Plus the rather large fielding difference. so in other words…pedroia’s the better, cheaper player, all things considered.

and his swing may not age well, according to heresay. Gotcha…

Let’s be fair here, Cano is having a nice year. But pedroia is a better player with a “cheaper” contract.

    • Zombie Bugsy

Time to stop swinging first pitch, guys. Start making him work a bit.

  • CanoFTW

Why can’t Jon Miller just say it might rain?

    • Tank the Frank

      Hahahaha!

    • http://www.facebook.com/dougchu Doug

That would be a waste of his beautiful and mellifluous voice.

    • http://bronxbaseballdaily.com Matt ACTY/BBD

Hey likes the sound of his voice waaaaay too much to employ some brevity.

  • whozat

CC is going to be out of this game before the end of the 6th, Robbie. Don’t need to be handing them runs AND extra outs.

  • JSquared

    STEAL!! JOHNNY!! STEAL!!

  • Zombie Bugsy

now steal. i makes no sense to stay on first. so, steal.

  • BigBlueAL

    Beckett has no curveball tonight.

  • Salty Buggah

    no DP Tex

  • Johan Iz My Brohan

Beckett has a crappy curveball today.

  • http://bronxbaseballdaily.com Matt ACTY/BBD

Mick Kelleher is the best fielding first base coach in the game.

  • Drew

    what the fuck was that

  • MikeD

    We need an A-Bomb.

    • MikeD

      You’re welcome.

    • inpinstripes

      You can have it, then.

    • Kara

      Well, we got one!!

  • Tank the Frank

I’ve never seen that before. I’ve never seen an ump not make a strikeout call and then call for the strikeout 40 seconds later.

  • Tony

Rain? God wants to watch Mad Men.

    • Zombie Bugsy

oh my god, almost forgot to record that

    • Tony

ARod also wants to watch Mad Men

  • Zombie Bugsy

jesus, why aren’t they stealing??? did they not see the SC highlights of Texas running all over Veritek. They don’t even need advance scouts for that shit. this makes no fucking sense.

    • whozat

It really doesn’t make any sense. Are they going off of four year old scouting reports? RUN!!!!

    • http://eemack.blogspot.com Jackson

Remember two games ago when Johnny Damon fouled a ball off if his knee. He’s probably not feeling that spry right now.

      • danny

        very true.

    • Drew

Well, it does make sense. Alex Rodriguez is up with two outs and a man on.

      • Drew

        Case and point.

        • Salty Buggah

          good call

      • whozat

        Ok, this particular instance, fine.

But they didn’t run yesterday, tehy didn’t run in the whole series at the stadium…Why?? Jeter and Damon are very good at it. Melky, Hairston and Pena have enough speed too, especially against the WORST catching tandem in baseball.

        • Drew

Oh I agree, we should be running a lot more on both Tek and V-Mart. Just in that situation, Damon is already in scoring position (for Alex) and there are 2 outs. Plus, after the first two pitches it was a 2-0 count. Once he didn’t run on the first or second pitch, you really don’t want to risk taking the bat out of his hands ahead in the count like that.

    • Tank the Frank

Damon may still have a gimpy leg. Jeter was on 1st but the count quickly went 0-2 to Damon with 2 outs…not a good base stealing scenario.

I think those are the only two opportunities we’ve had.

      • whozat

If it was only tonight that we were talking about, you’d be right.

      • Zombie Bugsy

granted those might be legit points but i think i’m just a little confused since we have stopped stealing against the sox since the last series. but i’ll take this outcome.

  • Salty Buggah

    it’s raining?

  • http://bronxbaseballdaily.com Matt ACTY/BBD

Good 3-1 pitch by Beckett. Come on, Alex.

  • JSquared

    GET SOME!!!

  • http://bronxbaseballdaily.com Matt ACTY/BBD

    Fucking rocket. Love it.

  • http://www.facebook.com/dougchu Doug

  • yankeefan91 Arod fan

  • JMK

That’s right! Beckett is just so clutch. He’s a bulldog, you know.

  • E-ROC

    A-Rod!

  • Mr.Jigginz

    A-Rod SMASH!!!!

  • Accent Shallow

This Rodriguez fellow is a good hitter.

4 bombs off Beckett. It’s like 2006 all over again!

  • danny

    A-ROD.

  • Salty Buggah

    A-BOMB!!!!!!!

  • whozat

    AROD!!!

I hate Fenway. I can’t believe I was worried that might not be a homer, but it was what, a foot high enough?

  • Johan Iz My Brohan

Josh Beckett, you have the best curveball known to man!

  • http://www.riveraveblues.com Mike Axisa

    A-God.

  • http://eemack.blogspot.com Jackson

Went to the well one to many times there

  • BigBlueAL

    Bandbox.

  • bicycle boy

    AN A-BOMB !!!

  • Mikey K-9

I would say that was clutch but the Yanks do have the lead.
    I kid I kid….

  • adeel

the call room just went dead. a little piece of Joe morgan just died tonight.

  • JSquared

The Fans just…. stood up and starting clapping for A-Rod before the Homerun… like they knew…

  • Mr.Jigginz

(A-Rod’s response to the two straight curveballs)Fool me once, shame one you…Fool me twice……….You…….you never gon’ fool me again.

    • Tank the Frank

      Hahaha nice!

Alex says, “I’m decide when I hit home runs. I’m…I’m the decider.”

    • Accent Shallow

      A-Rod’s not from Tennessee.

      /almost subtle

    • http://twitter.com/tsjc68 tommiesmithjohncarlos a/k/a Ridiculous Upside

We must stop these terrorist killers at all costs.

Now, watch this drive. [crushes ball]

  • Drew

V-Mart should be Beckett’s personal catcher. Tek totally can’t catch him.

    • whozat

      But…Varitek…no hittaz…four…no-nos…wait…

      *KABOOM*

  • BXBomber

Should we sub in someone for Cano in the 9th on D if it’s a 1 run game? He’s scaring me tonight with his recklessness the HR be damned…

    • Accent Shallow

No, he’s usually pretty smooth. Besides, who’s the backup 2B? Hairston?

    • whozat

ARod is the worst defender in the infield, with his hip. So, if you need to pimp the D, that’s who you replace.

  • Ace III

A-Rizzy in da builiding…love having one of the greatest players in da history of da game on my favorite team…

  • V

I absolutely love the fact that Smoltz dominated for the Cards, lol.

    • Bob Stone

Maybe the Sox gave up on Smoltze one game too soon.

  • JSquared

NL Smoltz revival… yeah, don’t have to fat easier. Smolz knew that from the late 90’s, dont know what he was thinking…

    • JSquared

Face the Yankees makes it easier*******

  • Johan Iz My Brohan

Beckett has now been scored on in 10 consecutive innings…

    • http://twitter.com/tsjc68 tommiesmithjohncarlos a/k/a Ridiculous Upside

And that’s an understatement. He’s been scored on VIOLENTLY in 10 consecutive innings.

    • Tony

Alyssa Milano’s record is in jeopardy

      • whozat

        giggity

  • Accent Shallow

V-Mart came up as a shortstop? Did not know that.

    • Johan Iz My Brohan

doesn’t look like a shortstop now, that’s for sure.

  • Accent Shallow

I wonder who’s at the advantage here, CC or Martinez?

    Looks like CC, heh.

  • JSquared

    Indians win the V-Mart trade.

  • Accent Shallow

Also, way for the Red Sox to make him work. Big Man might get 7 innings now.

  • Tank the Frank

Damn you throw your bat like that and it’s usually an automatic ejection.

  • http://www.facebook.com/dougchu Doug

How quickly Victor Martinez fits in with his teammates.

  • adeel

this has got to be one of the heaviest pitching batteries in the history of the game?
