    • Mr.Jigginz

      You gotta love that tune.

  • Mr.Jigginz

Sure he can…but will he????Stay tuned.

  • Salty Buggah

There’s the nice quick inning I was looking for. 2 mo (if possible) CC!

  • http://twitter.com/tsjc68 tommiesmithjohncarlos a/k/a Ridiculous Upside

93 pitches for CC. Can he squeeze six more outs out of that arm?

The better question is, how many more homers will Beckett give up before Francona pulls him?

    • texburnathia

It must be those goddamn wind tunnels

      • JobaWockeeZ

If they weren’t there all those balls would have been popups and probably wouldn’t have left the infield!

  • Drew

That’s like asking can he squeeze in one more Big Chipotle Cheese-steak Sandwich.

  • http://www.riveraveblues.com Mike Axisa

Two rockets by Swish this game, both right at people.

    • Salty Buggah

dude has the worst luck with BABIP ever (though tied with A-rod and Robbie, with RISP only, for this year)

      • Drew

His BABIP is right in line with his career average. Actually a little higher.

        • Salty Buggah

Yea I know that but it justs seems that way (selective memory most likely)

  • Zombie Bugsy

nick swisher has been remarkably consistent after that may/june slide.

    • http://www.riveraveblues.com Mike Axisa

That May/June slump was just a correction for his unreal April.

  • Accent Shallow

    Two line drives, two outs.

    So it goes.

  • JMK

Melky has looked terrible the past month.

    • Johan Iz My Brohan

He hasn’t gotten any real rest since Gardner got injured.

      • http://twitter.com/tsjc68 tommiesmithjohncarlos a/k/a Ridiculous Upside

Maybe we need a bit more Hairston in CF.

      • Tony

        sounds like a fourth outfielder…

    • whozat

Sucks for everyone that Gardner broke his thumb. He’d have gotten playing time, Melky would have gotten the rest he clearly needs, and the Yanks probably would have had more production out of CF.

  • yankeefan91 Arod fan

    That was a quick inning.

  • Johan Iz My Brohan

Swisher, Cano, and Melky all bust for not scoring on Beckett that inning.

    • http://twitter.com/tsjc68 tommiesmithjohncarlos a/k/a Ridiculous Upside

Not a single homer. We’re slipping.

    • Zombie Bugsy

  • Accent Shallow

Thanks, we needed to remember Chase Wright.

  • http://www.riveraveblues.com Mike Axisa

What did that Chase Wright clip have to do with anything?

    • http://bronxbaseballdaily.com Matt ACTY/BBD

      Everything, Mike. Everything.

    • http://twitter.com/tsjc68 tommiesmithjohncarlos a/k/a Ridiculous Upside

It’s always in the hopper, ready to roll.

If the Padres are playing the Diamondbacks in Chase Field, well, shit, that sounds like a good reason to bring up Chase Wright!

      • http://bronxbaseballdaily.com Matt ACTY/BBD

You know what, I could totally see Jon Miller pulling that out of his ass.

Steve Phillips: Did you know the airplane was invented by Orville and Wilbur Wright?
Jon Miller: Speaking of people named Wright, let’s take a look at Chase Wright giving up four homers to the Red Sox.

          • Mr.Jigginz

            +1000 just on the creativity,alone.

      • Salty Buggah

        Dodgers playing? Torre managed Chase
Phillies? Chase Utley has the same name
Tigers or White Sox? they chase a lot of pitches so bring out Chase’s clip

I could go on for every team

  • JSquared

ESPN was planning on playing the 4 homerun clip for some time now.

  • http://www.riveraveblues.com Mike Axisa

Might be time to get someone up.

  • danny

that was cruel, why would they want the yankee fans to feel pain? its not like they have a thing against the yankees or anything.

  • Salty Buggah

ESPN couldn’t hold it in much longer. They had to bust that clip out someday.

    • http://twitter.com/tsjc68 tommiesmithjohncarlos a/k/a Ridiculous Upside

Don’t worry, there will be some 2004 ALCS highlights coming up here soon.

      • Riddering

They’re saving those for the final Yankee-Sox series when the Sox will be 11 games out.

ESPN will use it as evidence that Boston can never be counted out!

  • http://bronxbaseballdaily.com Matt ACTY/BBD

Gah, whatever separation the Yankees are getting the Sox are closing. Come on, CC. Get the last guy.

  • JSquared

Important thing is to win the game, the more wins the more rest CC, AJ and everyone else gets going into the playoffs. Only thing i care about right now…

  • Zombie Bugsy

i thought that was gonna drop.

  • Drew

Ha I thought that one was about to drop in… Top of the lineup due up :)

    • Drew

      whoops

  • MikeD

Surprised that last pop up was caught. Everyone else keeps dropping in.

  • http://www.facebook.com/dougchu Doug

This game is giving me chest pains and tingling in the fingertips whenever a pop-up is in play.

  • http://www.riveraveblues.com Mike Axisa

107 pitches … what do you think?

I think you send him back out there with Alex Gonzalez’s noodle bat and the lefty Ellsbury due up. Have Hughes warming up to back him.

    • JMK

Sounds good. Should we get Aceves ready?

Put the torches down, guys, I’m kidding.

    • Salty Buggah

      agree

    • JSquared

Yes, would’ve been better if he gave up no hits, would’ve actually have been perfect, but i still send him back out for atleast 2 more batters.

    • Zombie Bugsy

remember when hughes first moved to the bullpen he pitched like 2 innings at a time. that was way before i forgot what hughes looked like.

    • Drew

      +1

    • Tom Zig

If not CC then who starts the 7th?

No way Girardi goes 2 innings with Hughes.

Marte and Coke can pitch today

      • Accent Shallow

Well, that’s not too useful, considering the only lefty in the lineup is Ellsbury.

      • whozat

Why? Hughes can’t go two, even when they have tomorrow OFF??

This kid is a starting pitcher. He’s thrown what, 8 innings this month?

    • danny

agreed, if they catch the ball last inning he probably would have never given up that run. Send him back out there, but have someone ready

  • Tony

    Hughesus

Instead, CC will come out, two guys will get on, THEN Hughes will come in.

  • Tank the Frank

  • JSquared

    Okay, charge the mound!!!

    • JobaWockeeZ

But we forget Jeter has class unlike a certain someone.

  • JobaWockeeZ

    The hell Beckett?
Back him up CC. Hit Pedroia and let’s see him charge the mound.

    • Tom Zig

      haha that’d be interesting.

  • Zombie Bugsy

i wanna see jeter get really mad at beckett and then have beckett be a villain like jim rice

  • http://bronxbaseballdaily.com Matt ACTY/BBD

Have they mentioned the whole Jim Rice thing tonight?

    • http://and-that-happened.blogspot.com Evan

      I don’t think so.

    • JMK

Of course not. Why would they do such a thing?

      • http://twitter.com/tsjc68 tommiesmithjohncarlos a/k/a Ridiculous Upside

        Chase Wright.

        • JMK

I see what you did there. And I like it.

    • Tank the Frank

No but they’ve shown Chase Wright giving up 4 HR a half-dozen times.

      • MikeD

I was in my kitchen for about five minutes with the TV playing in the other room, and all of a sudden I hear Miller screaming “four straight HRs and the Red Sox take the lead.” I nearly had a heart attack.

      • JMK

Sarcasm, Tank. C’mon, man! You’re usually better at picking this sort of stuff up!

  • Accent Shallow

If Beckett is so untouchable in October, how did the Rays win the pennant last year?

I seem to remember Beckett being prominently involved in the ALCS . . .

    • http://twitter.com/tsjc68 tommiesmithjohncarlos a/k/a Ridiculous Upside

I could be mistaken, but I believe the only two baseball seasons that didn’t end in a strike that cancelled the World Series in our lifetimes were the 2004 and 2007 seasons.

All other years were ended prematurely, because baseball is broken because the Yankees keep trying to buy championships.

      • Tank the Frank

Well that’s true everyone knows that.

  • A.D.

are back to back games in any sport ever identical?

    • Bob Stone

      Ridiculous, stupid statement by Morgan.

  • JSquared

…I’ve been thinking about this for a while, but it always seems to be that the Red Sox get a good hop on ground balls all the time, the Yankees face tough hops everygame… i don’t get it. Must be the grittiness.

    • Johan Iz My Brohan

The grittiness scares the ball away, while it tries to attack lazy players like Cano.

  • MikeD

How many pitches has Beckett thrown so far? I don’t think they’ve mentioned it once.

    • Bob Stone

      101

    • whozat

      100.

They haven’t mentioned it because it hasn’t come into play at all.

    • JSquared

      101

    • Salty Buggah

  • http://twitter.com/tsjc68 tommiesmithjohncarlos a/k/a Ridiculous Upside

Good – Hughes is up in the bullpen.

  • Salty Buggah

where the hell did ball 2 to Gonzalez miss?

  • Bob Stone

    C’mon CC – quick 7th

  • danny

    like a cat.

  • E-ROC

You know, I don’t care if CC is facing scrubs, I think he should be out of the game. There is a reason you have Hughes and Mo in the ‘pen. No need to abuse him.

    • http://twitter.com/tsjc68 tommiesmithjohncarlos a/k/a Ridiculous Upside

      Meh, I’m fine either way.

If you lift him after Ellsbury, I’d have no complaints, though.

        • http://twitter.com/tsjc68 tommiesmithjohncarlos a/k/a Ridiculous Upside

Well, genius is a pretty strong term, but if you insist on using it, I can handle it.

    • Drew

Eh, 115+ for CC isn’t really abusing him.

      • E-ROC

Most of them have come in high stressed innings.

    • JobaWockeeZ

Ehh sometimes I don’t find it necessary but I don’t mind unless he pitches a lot of stressful pitches.

  • BigBlueAL

Phil Hughes is allowed to get 4 or 5 outs???? Since when.

    • MikeD

In another moment, they’ll be talking about how the Sox started 8-0 against the Yankees, but will ignore the four-game sweep at the Stadium.

      • MikeD

Oh, my bad. Instead of pointing out how the Sox started 8-0, Miller is now talking about how the Sox have a winning record against the Yankees at Fenway…ignoring the overall record.

  • danny

i hopee huuuuuughess isn’t to rusty

    • Tank the Frank

He looked a little rusty in his last outing…which is to say he wasn’t supremely dominant.

  • Mr.Jigginz

Ok,who had the mentioning of the Ellsbury steal of home occuring in the bottom of the 7th,in the pool?

  • http://www.facebook.com/dougchu Doug

Steve Phillips sometimes makes me wonder how we was ever hired as a General Manager, but it’s the mets so… nevermind.

    • JSquared

      he*

    • JMK

He barely beat out Hamburgler for the job.

    • Zombie Bugsy

also he has to dumb it down for the ESPN crowd

    • Chris

He wasn’t as bad a GM as people make him out to be. He was a GM for 5 full seasons (hired mid-season 1997 and fired mid-season 2003). In those 5 full seasons, the Mets made the playoffs twice and the world series once. In the 42 seasons without Steve Phillips as GM, they’ve made the playoffs 5 times (and only once since 1998). He also was the GM when they drafted/signed Reyes and Wright.

  • Bob Stone

CC moved his era below Beckett’s tonight. That will help in the Cy Young voting . . . if it holds up through the end of the year.

  • Zombie Bugsy

hey, if we win, CC passes Beckett in Win (albeit, a pretty meaningless stat but still its fun to root for)

    • Johan Iz My Brohan

Don’t you know that the Win is the most important stat of all when voting for Cy Young?

  • Johan Iz My Brohan

On another note. Can we sign the entire Curacao little league team?

    • BigBlueAL

I was flipping back and forth to that game, what a crazy game and finish!!

      • DreDog

That might be the most exciting game this year. I was flipping back and forth a little too much.

    • http://twitter.com/tsjc68 tommiesmithjohncarlos a/k/a Ridiculous Upside

I was already in love with the island of Curacao after the Netherlands beat the DR in the WBC.

  • JSquared

It never really happened for Phil Hughes? Miller, die in a fire.

    • Chili Davis

Heh, I had the same reaction. Why speak in the past tense about a 23-year-old who will be back in the rotation next season?

      • Bob Stone

Because Joe is an idiot and doesn’t know anything.

        • Chili Davis

          It was Jon, not Joe.

        • Bob Stone

I meant Miller – John not Joe

      • Mr.Jigginz

To defend Miller,he did say that Hughes appears to be a budding star…IN TEH BULLPEN!!!!Puh.

      • whozat

        You assume that
        A) Miller knows how old Hughes is
        B) He understands that you’d want to keep him as a starter at all
        C) He bothered to think before speaking.

    • Johan Iz My Brohan

      what did he say?

      • Kara

It never really worked out for Phil as a starter, but he can make it in the ‘pen…more or less.

      • JSquared

They thought phil hughes would be a starter but it never really happened, now it seems he’ll be a star in the bullpen… YEAH… RIIIIIGHT!!!

        • DreDog

As long as he helps the best team in baseball win, does it matter?

  • Salty Buggah

    97-96-97 Suck it Pedroia

  • Drew

That blurry close-up of Joe’s cheeks really added to my viewing experience. A++ for ESPN…

    • Kara

They really like that one. I’m pretty sure that was at least the 2nd or 3rd time it’s made an appearance tonight.

  • danny

hmm beckett back for more? make them regret it!

  • Kara

Jon Miller, just shut up. You don’t have any clue what you’re talking about.

  • http://bronxbaseballdaily.com Matt ACTY/BBD

Swisher was in full face protect mode on that catch.

    • adeel

Maybe he did that so that Cano wouldn’t feel too bad about missing the two balls…. what a teamate!

  • http://eemack.blogspot.com Jackson

I like the extreme close up of Girardi. I was wondering what his blackhead situation was.

  • adeel

I agree with the sentiment here; I get this feeling that Hughes wont come out for the 8th… That is the Girardi way.

    • http://twitter.com/tsjc68 tommiesmithjohncarlos a/k/a Ridiculous Upside

Time for Joe to BLOW OUR MINDS…

    • Salty Buggah

No I think he’ll come out because there’s no one else that’s as dependable in the pen tonight (maybe Coke as a loogy)

      • adeel

that’s exactly what scares me… on the post game he’ll be like “well Ortiz was 5-10 off of hughes and I thought Francona would pitch hit him, so that’s why I gave coke the ball”…..

not that it will matter…. we will still win

  • Salty Buggah

Beckett still? What are they saving the pen for? (though I giess it doesn’t hurt as he’s been fine the last 2 innings)

  • http://bronxbaseballdaily.com Matt ACTY/BBD

I guess the fact that A-Rod was hitting that homer on a curveball has nothing to do with his hitting off the front foot.

  • adeel

    • bobtaco

Or to District 9. I’m going to miss Hideki…

      • adeel

Maybe we could petition the commisioner to have two dh’s???

      • http://twitter.com/tsjc68 tommiesmithjohncarlos a/k/a Ridiculous Upside

        District 9 was thoroughly “meh”.

        • http://bronxbaseballdaily.com Matt ACTY/BBD

          I thoroughly disagree with you.

          • http://twitter.com/tsjc68 tommiesmithjohncarlos a/k/a Ridiculous Upside

You are entitled to do so.

I’ve been told I’m a hard judge of movies. District 9 had a good premise and was promised as a poignant allegory of apartheid.

It was woefully underdeveloped as an allegory and devolved into a pretty standard and predictable shoot-em-up at the end, the character development was feeble, and it was way too long and slow.

Does Jon Miller fancy himself a physicist? It would explain…nothing.

I have a physics degree. I have never heard the phrase “center of percussion.”

Center of percussion? It’s a baseball bat not a snare drum!

      guffaw!

    • http://twitter.com/tsjc68 tommiesmithjohncarlos a/k/a Ridiculous Upside

Well, I’m just going to trust the word of Jon Miller and Joe Morgan over you, Accent Shallow.

They both have doctoral degrees in baseball and in announcing.

    • http://eemack.blogspot.com Jackson

Well, I have a mechanical engineering degree and also never heard of that.

      0-2 Jon Miller

I have a degree in Retarded Shit. We use that phrase all the time.

      • No Halladay

Degrees mean nothing, most of the rich bastards in the world have no degree, it’s all who you know.

      • ShuutoHeat

I think Morgan and Miller both graduated from RSU with 4.0 GPA.

They also took BS101 while attending RSU.

  • zs190

So is Tito having a brain freeze? why would he let Beckett pitch still? He’s at 120 pitches, giving up 8 earned and 5 homeruns and Manny Delcarmen has only been warming up since like 2 innings ago…

Not that I’m complaining, but it’s ridiculously stupid

    • adeel

I think Francona thinks Beckett is slumping and trying to get him to work out of his funk… like a mutual thing…. and then of course, why waste the bullpen when you have Tazawa, Bucholtz, and an iffy wakefield?

  • http://www.riveraveblues.com Mike Axisa

Ooo … Swisher juuuuuuuuust missed that one.

  • http://bronxbaseballdaily.com Matt ACTY/BBD

So is there any chance that, barring this becoming a “save” situation, Girardi lets Hughes finish this one out?

    • Accent Shallow

Not unless he’s very efficient and the Yankees go quietly in the 9th.

  • whozat

    ‘UUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUES.

    Mow these guys down!

That is the end of Swisher’s on base streak.

Nope. We’re bringing like 12 men to the plate in the 9th against Ramon Ramirez and Hideki Okajima.

  • http://pinstripepalace.blogspot.com/ Brien Jackson

Hideki is going to force them to bring him back yet.

    • whozat

  • No Halladay

only 38 games to go and a 7.5 game lead. I don’t see the Yanks giving it away or the Red Sox Taking it. I think we need to start paying attention to who wins the Central and who the Yanks match up against best.

Or would we rather see Texas win the WC? We’ll see Texas on Tue-Thur, so it might be wise to watch them closely.

    • BXBomber

We need to fear the Angels. I swear that team has had our number for the 25 years I’ve been watching the Yankees.

      • No Halladay

Yeah, I figured that might be the ALCS. I’m hoping Boston fades so that the Angels have to play someone else. I can’t root for anyone in that series.

  • Bob Stone

    From Wilipedia:

“The center of percussion is the point on an object where a perpendicular impact will produce translational and rotational forces which perfectly cancel each other out at some given pivot point, so that the pivot will not be moving momentarily after the impulse. The same point is called the center of oscillation for the object suspended from the pivot as a pendulum.

Centers of percussion are often discussed in the context of a bat, racquet, sword or other long thin objects. The center of percussion may or may not be the “sweet spot” depending on the pivot point chosen.”

Maybe he does know some physics.

    • Accent Shallow

I wasn’t saying it’s a non-existent phrase, just I had never heard the term before.

      • Bob Stone

I never heard the phrase either but had to look it up after you said you never heard of it with your physics degree. I was surprised that I found something on it.

  • bobtaco

He seems to be up in the zone with every pitch…

Fenway has always been a hitters park but not too much is made of it because it’s been around forever.

    • http://pinstripepalace.blogspot.com/ Brien Jackson

Also because it had to be constructed around an existing neighborhood, so yeah. I don’t have a real beef with the park, but the double standards are just really annoying.
