Open Thread: Going for the sweep tomorrow edition

Game 110 Spillover Thread III
Staten Island's bullpen shuts out Oneonta

Well, that was a satisfying win, wouldn’t you say? How about CC Sabathia, I hear he can’t pitch in big games.

Anyway, here’s an open thread for everyone to chill out and relax in on a Saturday evening. The Cubs and Rockies are on MLB Network at 8pm, and the Mets will try to avoid another K-Rod blown save in San Diego starting at 10pm tonight. Talk about whatever your heart desires here, just be nice.

Update (9:00pm): The Josh Tower Experience will last all of one day. He’s going to be DFA’d tomorrow to make room for Chad Gaudin.

Awesome, awesome series, no matter what happens tomorrow.

  • Ivan

That 0-8 record seem like a long, long time ago.

    • http://www.theyankeeuniverse.com/ The Artist

and 3-8 feels more like 8-3 when you’re up by 5 in the loss.

      • No Halladay

Boston is tailspinning after the Papi issue, 5 games lost in the standings in 5 days

        • http://www.theyankeeuniverse.com/ The Artist

That’s right, they’re looking at getting swept by the Yanks after getting swept by the Rays.

They will be in full fledged panic in Boston by Monday, and WEEI will be hilarious to listen to.

        • Whitey14

If you recall, they weren’t playing well coming out of the break. The Papi situation isn’t making it any better, but it isn’t the cause. If you also recall they swept Baltimore immediately after the news came out. This team isn’t hitting well right now and against Tampa and NY, that alone can kill a team.

They lost a genuine innings eater before the second half even started. Penny picked the wrong time to stop giving them quality starts and neither Buchholz or Smoltz has given them half of what they were hoping for. The bullpen is now overworked as a result. I won’t listen to WEEI on Monday because I don’t want to hear from the retarded fans who don’t understand the ups and downs of the baseball season. just as quickly as they’ve dipped, they could turn it around. If they were 5.5 out of the Wild Card right now it would be a different story

          • pat

I won’t listen to WEEI on Monday because I don’t want to hear from the retarded fans who don’t understand the ups and downs of the baseball season

I hear you, I don’t listen to WFAN after a Yankee loss against ANYBODY yet alone Boston.

            • http://www.theyankeeuniverse.com/ The Artist

ESPN is much better for Yankee stuff. Kay always has the inside scoop. Francesa is lost, and in many ways has no idea what Cashman has been doing for the past 4 years.

          • mike

Did you need to use the word retarded to describe the fan? Maybe you could find a word that doesn’t show you’re still in 7th grade?

    • Accent Shallow

You mean *gasp* that 0-8 might be a fluke, rather than indicative the Sox are a much, much better team?

      • Whitey14

No, they were the better team at the time those games were played. That title is passed back and forth several times a year depending on how each team is playing. Right now, clearly, the Yankees are the better team.

        • wilcymoore

Everyone needs to keep in mind that five games ago the Red Sox were 0.5 games behind the Yankees. Five straight losses and five (or six) consecutive Yankee wins, and the margin is now 5.5 games.

That’s a five-game swing in, well, 5 games. So remember how fast things can change.

  • Salty Buggah

    Im gettin greedy…

  • Accent Shallow

Great, great win. Hopefully Andy can hit his usual second half stride (2008 excepted)

    • No Halladay

Mussina might have helped this year after all as a serviceable fifth, but who would have guessed that Wang would turn into Irabu.

  • http://161stStreet.wordpress.com Chris A

Has anyone figured out the whole Josh Towers/Mark Melancon move? I’m still confused about it.

    • No Halladay

I’m sorry I missed it, what move?

      • http://161stStreet.wordpress.com Chris A

Josh Towers was purchased from Scranton, and Melancon was optioned down to Scranton.

    • Ghost of Scott Brosius

Maybe melancon needs more regular innings to develop, which he can’t get up here?

      • http://bronxbaseballdaily.com Matt ACTY/BBD

That’s one, Towers could’ve given more length today if it’d been necessary, and Towers is easily DFA-able for Gaudin tomorrow.

        • http://www.theyankeeuniverse.com/ The Artist

          +1

          • Rocky Road Redemption (formerly RAB poster)

            I second that +1.

    • Zack

Since Ace is unavailable for a few days Towers had to come up incase we needed innings. Gaudin is coming tomorrow so Towers will be DFA’d and Gaudin will take his spot.
Melancon will get the regular work that he needs in the minors and will probably be back up when rosters expand, if not sooner to take Mitre’s spot(thinking he loses his spot in the rotation to Gaudin)

      • No Halladay

Sounds like good reasoning, what happens to Mitre, DFA or hold for the pen. What if he pitches his butt off Monday? (I know, what if I find a chest of Spanish Coins in the backyard when I dig a hole this PM)

        • whozat

Mitre might have options left. I’m not actually sure.

I figure they DFA Towers, though.

      • mattb

Girardi just addressed it, basically saying that assuming no Ace, Bruney or Coke today, they had D-Rob, Hughes (for 30 pitches) and Mo–essentially saying God forbid CC takes a liner off his leg in the first, or they play another extra inning game, wanted a guy who could go 100 pitches. Gotta figure he’ll go back down tomorrow to make room for Gaudin. I’d be shocked if they option D-Rob–he’s clearly working his way into the bottom of that first pen group–Mo, Hughes, Ace, Coke, D-rob and then Bruneu and co.

        • mattb

Actually, I wonder if Towers has options (I guess I’d be surprised given he’s been around awhile). Though quite frankly my preference would be to take my chances putting Towers through waivers than to lose D-Rob for 10 days.

  • Adam

Arodys Vizcaino taken out after 2/3 of an inning. Anyone know why?

    • Salty Buggah

Oh damn I hope Arod (that’s what Im gonna call him…Arod the pitcher) is ok.

    • http://www.riveraveblues.com Mike Axisa

He left the game with an injured back. No idea how bad.

It’s better than an injured arm.

      • Johan Iz My Brohan

        Back spasm?

      • Salty Buggah

hope its not too serious and is OK

    • Accent Shallow

He’ll have to change his name to Jeterys if he wants to succeed in NY.

      • pat

hahah or he could stay Arodys be an awesome amazing pitcher, win a few cy youngs and still be unappreciated in the eyes of new yorkers.

  • Salty Buggah

You know what? I dont even care that Ortiz didn’t admit to using steroids and that the ESPN/MLBPA defended him as long as he keeps sucking like this. I hope A-rod’s performance from here on is up to his level and Papi’s stinks so their natural talent speaks for itself.

    • No Halladay

Maybe that’s why the issue is moot, and not being covered that much, He’s starting to look old and done.

    • Accent Shallow

Ortiz is at the age where hitters of his profile not uncommonly fall off a cliff.

      • No Halladay

Without the roids, correct, you mean we don’t all bulk up in our late 30’s, swing trees and lift cars? Damn, now that I’m 38 I’m so disappointed.

  • http://www.theyankeeuniverse.com/ The Artist

They had to go hit Alex twice, so now we owe them one.

    This shit will never end.

    • Zack

the first one wasnt really going after him. 73mph curveball at him, if it didnt hit his bat it would have been a WP and Damon would have moved to third, in the first inning.

      • Whitey14

I didn’t see the second one as I was listening on the radio while I mowed the lawn, but it certainly didn’t seem like the right situation to be beaning somebody intentionally. Typically if you’re planning that, you’d have somebody warming up in the pen.

        • Salty Buggah

I agree but I understand why he got thrown out. He went up and in to Tex and hit Alex on the 1st pitch. Considering how the ball got away (probably) in the 1st from Buchholz, it made it seems obvious. If it wasn’t the 1st pitch, everything would have ok.

        • radnom

Thats the most ridiculous logic i’ve ever heard, even from a Sox fan ;). If someone gets thrown out/injured you get as much time as needed to get the next pitcher warmed up.

        • http://www.theyankeeuniverse.com/ The Artist

          When is it ever?

-When Melancon did it, they said “Its a blowout, why wake up sleeping dogs?”
-When Bucholtz did it, they said “Its a 0-0 game, you don’t want to put a man on base there”
-When Gonzalez did it, they said “They’re down 2-0 late in the game, why put a man on base here?”

I guess the only time that would ‘make sense’ is if a player hit 4 HRs, or immediately after an unassisted Triple Play.

    • http://www.riveraveblues.com Mike Axisa

Yeah, I saw it on deadspin this morning. Apparently he went out, drank himself into a stupor, tried to find some blow and went to a strip club.

      For shame.

      • Zack

Where was the dude that’s suppose to be with him 24/7 and in charge of his money?

        • No Halladay

Probably doing the same thing but not telling about it.

      • dkidd

deadspin must have been on steroids, because their performance has fallen off a cliff

        • George H

It was better with Leitch and Chandler at the helm. I still like Daulerio, though.

who would you least like to face in a five game series?

    tigers/white sox/rangers

    peavy/danks/buehrle/floyd would make me nervous

    • No Halladay

I agree, the White Sox seem like the bigger threat. But that might be because they whooped us 3/4 a second ago.

    • Accent Shallow

Peavy is damn good, but he’s not the same pitcher outside of Petco. Not to mention, who knows how well he’ll throw coming off that injury.

    • radnom

I think Peavy is too much of a question mark at this point, and the top two of Verlander and Jackson is much more daunting in a short series in my mind.

I’ve got to pick the Tigers.

    • http://deleted RollingWave

Peavy’s career record in playoff is even worse than CC’s and Floyd doesn’t really scare me. Buerhle / Danks both have terrible track records against us.

Basically, any of these 3 is highly preferable to the Angels, who can just grab 25 guys from our readers here and dress us up in their uniform and still beat the Yankees

  • Ghost of Scott Brosius

Masterson starting against chicago. hope he dominates

    • Johan Iz My Brohan

Trading Masterson really crippled them actually. Their Masterson was our Aceves, a multipurpose guy who could start, or come out in any inning. They could have used him last night or the day before badly. I’m happy that Masterson gets a chance to start.

      • Mike Pop

        Eh, I still think that

V-Mart’s` value to Boston >>>>>> Masterson’s value to Boston.

        • Whitey14

I agree. It just looks bad right now because of the workload their bullpen has had to handle (poorly)

          • JGS

which was the same problem the Yankee pen had in April before they brought up Aceves. Not having a long reliever burns out everyone else

      • http://bronxbaseballdaily.com Matt ACTY/BBD

Except Masterson can’t get lefties out.

  • YankeeScribe

Yanks have the best record in the ML now

Here’s a scary thought. The Angels are now tied with the Yanks in runs scored. Their offense has been firing on all cylinders since June…

Angels are on the list of teams that need to experience mechanical failure with an airline or injuries.

  • No Halladay

We need to start looking at playoff matchups, Yanks V Central seems to be a done deal and a good start

    Angels/Rangers v Sox/Rays looks like the other

A really good draw for the Yanks, very bad for the Angels, botht he Sox and the Rays have bounced them in the playoffs.

    • YankeeScribe

Now that the Red Sox are fading, the only AL team that scares me is the Angels…

      • Mike Pop

Boston would still scare me. Beckett/Lester, I no like.

        • pat

Verlander/Jackson is no cakewalk either. Yeah we won both games but we scored 4 runs in 19 innings. That won’t do the trick very often.

          • Zack

our 1-2 punch is pretty decent too

            • Rocky Road Redemption (formerly RAB poster)

I guess, but I’d take Verlander/Jackson the majority of the time right now over CC/A.J., as good as they are. Although I don’t say that with any conviction.

              • Zack

true, but i have more faith in our offense scoring off of their 1-2, than Detriot’s offense scoring off of us.
plus personally im thinking jackson is going to come back to earth the 2nd half, can he really keep up a 2.65 era?

          • pat

            *18 innings.

    • Bob Stone

It’s WAY too early to be looking at playoff matchups. The situation could change drastically in the next month and a half. Talking about matchups now is absurd!

      • http://www.theyankeeuniverse.com/ The Artist

        Are you superstitious or something?

Whatever we discuss on this board will have no bearing on the outcome of the AL East. I don’t see the harm in looking ahead, its not like we’re managing the team.

        • Bob Stone

No – I’m not superstitious. It just seems like a waste of time to talk about matchups that might never happen.

I don’t mind. Have a party. If you enjoy it, talk about it all you want. I just think it is a waste of time at this point.

      • Salty Buggah

meh it’s still fun and interesting. And it’s not TOO early, It’s not April or May.

      • whozat

        Very true.

Sure, it’s unlikely, but let’s say the Sox win tomorrow and then the Yanks have a skid where they lose a couple series and the Sox go on a run where they sweep a crappy team and win a few series on a row? All of a sudden, they’re two games back and there’s six weeks left in the season.

        • Rocky Road Redemption (formerly RAB poster)

          Absolutely.

This AL EAST Race is not even close to over. For one thing the injury bug could strike at any time.

Just came across this crazyass interview with Steve Lombardi from right before the series.
    http://www.nesn.com/2009/08/yankees-roll-into-series-with-red-sox-at-stadium.html

B-Hughesing, moving Coke into the rotation, hypercriticism of AJ.

    • Zack

Coke starting makes less sense than keeping Hughes in the bullpen

    • whozat

Why does anyone listen to that guy? He’d rather be right than have the Yankees be good.

      • http://www.theyankeeuniverse.com/ The Artist

Never understand fans like that. Only time I ever rooted for the Yanks to fail was around the middle of 07 when they were below .500, because I was (beyond) sick of Torre and wanted him fired.

The team looked like they gave up, and Torre (as usual) had no answers and no intention to try to solve them, so I figured what’s the difference.

        • Rocky Road Redemption (formerly RAB poster)

Seriously? I’d NEVER not root for this team.

I don’t want to judge you badly or sound too much like a dick, but you wanted them to lose in 07’? Me, never.

          • http://www.theyankeeuniverse.com/ The Artist

It’s OK, I know its taboo and all. I’d just had it with Torre and I thought the team gave up at that point anyway. It was like short term pain-long term gain.

BTW-I wanted Girardi to replace him since he was a YES broadcaster, so things worked out for me eventually.

            • Rocky Road Redemption (formerly RAB poster)

I figured Torre was out, and I was cool w/it. But at the time I really had no opinion on who they should get and decided to trust the Yanks on that one.

            • Zack

I never got this theory, team gives up fire the manager. Maybe we needed new players if they give up when they’re getting paid $15million to play baseball.

    • Salty Buggah

That dude’s dick. I used to read some of his posts to get a laugh of his irrationality. But I’m done with him, espcially after he took a jab at RAB.

I think it was when he was talking about Brackman being a bust (dumbass!) already and ended the post by saying that no one is going to make up “cute” slogans/t-shirts and nicknames for him now. That seemed like a passive aggressive shot at RAB.

Anyway, the Filipino family started saying “thats melancon!”, so the dude in the picture below, in the Yankees jersey, said “hey, are you melancon?” Melancon said no, but his fiance must have laughed or something, because then he turned red and the yanks jersey guy said, “you are! you are!” And then he admitted it.

No wonder Gibby didn’t screw around with batters given how it went with the first guy.

Ha. Yanks teased Towers. Will be DFA’d for Gaudin tomorrow, according to Feinsand via MLBTR.

    http://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2009/08/yankees-to-dfa-josh-towers.html

    • whozat

They didn’t tease him, they told him exactly what was up.

      • Scooter

Gives Towers a chance to latch on somewhere before the end of the season.

As a lefty with a pulse (and a solid AAA performance this season), he’ll get a shot somewhere.

Seems like the right thing to do. With Gaudin and Mitre ahead of him, I don’t know if he was going to get a shot.

Over under on how many bad starts it taking for Gaudin to take over?

    2?

  • Salty Buggah

    PeteAbe:

Towers, who is put of options, will be DFA’d tomorrow to make room for Chad Gaudin. Towers said he is eager to get back to Scranton once he clears waivers. “I’m fine with it,” he said. “I’m just glad they thought enough of me to bring me here today.”

    That’s good I guess.

    • http://www.theyankeeuniverse.com/ The Artist

Yeah, with the 15 inning game yesterday, they just wanted a long man around in case CC got injured/knocked out early. Now they can DFA him and he should clear no problem.

      • Salty Buggah

        yep

      what happened?

      • http://www.theyankeeuniverse.com/ The Artist

I have the full season. This year has been much slower than last year, I often have to list tix at cost just to get rid of them. But just today I sold 4 games, and 2 went out yesterday. Earlier in the year, I sold around 6 a month.

    • JGS

Totally hear you there–I’m on the 41

  • http://www.theyankeeuniverse.com/ The Artist

“Be advised, Yankees fans, both CC and A.J. felt the love this weekend.

“Big weekend for both of us,” Burnett said. “I’ve never had 49,000 people in my corner like that before and I bet CC hasn’t, either. It gives you chills. Now I know what you guys were talking about when you said these Red Sox games are something different. You could feel it inside the stadium.”

The Yankees have won 30 of their last 40 games. This has a chance to be a special team.”

    http://yankees.lhblogs.com/2009/08/08/wrapping-it-up-from-the-bronx-11/

Very nice. I guess AJ was telling the truth when he said he wanted to pitch on ‘the big stage’. I also had no idea when he signed here that he’s such a good teammate, and a good guy in general. You see him on the mound in TOR and he looked like a moody prick, and turns out he’s anything but.

    • Salty Buggah

yea, that’s why all the fans love him and CC/Tex of course.

Tex is so happy all the time. He gets all excited everytime one of the infielders make a good play. Did you see the way him and Alex hugged last night after the walk-off?

      • Salty Buggah

and CC didn’t leave early last night even though he was starting in 15 hours

      • http://www.theyankeeuniverse.com/ The Artist

Yeah, I also got a kick out of Alex throwing up his helmet, like a bouquet at a wedding.

Mo said they were all like a bunch of kids, just playing a baseball game. Fans stayed around, I was amazed at how full the stadium was after midnight. The entire team was on the top step of the dugout from the 8th inning on. What a stark contrast to the later Torre years, when they were getting eliminated by the Angels/Tigers in the ALDS and Jeter was the only one cheering.

        • Rocky Road Redemption (formerly RAB poster)

If you left early you better have had a damn good reason besides “I’m tired” or you’re not a real fan. How do you leave a game as incredible as that one?

          • whozat

What if you work early on Saturday? You expected to get home around 11, but instead the game goes til 12:30 and you won’t get home til 1:30 with the post-game traffic…

            • Rocky Road Redemption (formerly RAB poster)

              That’s a damn good reason!

      • Nickel

I have to admit, though, it makes me nervous when A-Rod is involved in those walk-off celebrations. Someone always winds up jumping on him from behind and he starts grabbing at his hip. It happened again last night, if you watch the replay.

    • Riddering

A.J. is great. I decided to cheer for him after he laid one on Swisher, but his personality and performances have made me a big fan.

I’m so thrilled that he finally gets to experience the adulation and victory of a division race and (hopefully) a postseason.

Josh Towers gets a prorated major league minimum salary for the rest of the season right?

    • whozat

      I don’t think so…just for today. Maybe not, though…if he’s getting DFA’d…I don’t know

    • pat

I believe once you’re up, you get it for the rest of the season.

  • Mike HC

Too bad the playoffs don’t start tomorrow. This team would kick ass. Just like I didn’t hang my head when the Yanks lost 8 straight to the Sox, I won’t act like we won the World Series after winning three in a row against em. The Red Sox may not even be our toughest competition (Tampa, Angels, Phillies) It is really nice to see the Yanks pull out a couple pitching duels though. Looking forward to the rest of the season. Cheers boys!! Don’t celebrate too much tonight
