Does Joe Girardi forget that he has Brian Bruney out in the pen or does he not fully trust him because the 7th inning seemed like a perfect spot for him. He hadn’t pitched since Friday and he’s had 4 straight scoreless outings covering 5 IP. Instead he pushes Aceves out for a 3rd inning and needed Coke to get out of the innning. He’s starting to turn into Joe Torre the way he manages the bullpen and only sticking with who he trusts.

Which, as a reliever, he is not learning to do. He is also not learning to command his lesser secondary pitches, which he will need to really be a good starter.

He is also not pitching very much, limiting his endurance going forward.

If he’s going to be in the pen, he should be used as a “relief ace”, coming in whenever the game is on the line and throwing 40-50 pitches. Instead, Joe has used him as a setup guy, always trying to make sure he’s available tomorrow as well as today, and thus only using him sparingly for an inning here or there.

Thanks. That would explain their logic, if they go by career.

Which means that pitching in the 8th inning is more pressure packed than pitching in the 5th inning.

What it does NOT mean is that pitching in the 8th is more “valuable” or “important” than pitching in the 5th. The two innings are equally valuable and important for victory. One inning may be harder, but harder and more important are not the same thing.
