The Cody Ransom Era isn’t over quite yet
ByA few days ago, while I was away, Mike succinctly summed up my feelings on Cody Ransom. He might be able to jump high, but he’s not really a viable Major Leaguer. Shortly after that post, the Yanks designated Cody Ransom for assignment. According to Chad Jennings, Ransom has cleared waivers and will rejoin AAA Scranton with a minor league contract. Despite the Twitter love for him, no other team in baseball wanted a 33-year-old infielder with a 57 OPS+ and 25 strike outs in 86 plate appearances this year. While some fear we might see him again in the Bronx when rosters expand in three weeks, I don’t see the team clearing a space on the 40-man roster just to call up Ransom on Sept. 1.

They probably won’t need too. Ramiro Pena and Hairston solve all middle infield backup positions. I would like to see Kevin Russo up to see if he could be a viable backup next year but clearing a spot on the 40 man for him seems useless.

This makes sense and provides good depth. Signing him to AAA protects the bench depth just discussed in the previous thread.
There are worse candidate for 3rd string utility guy I guess.
Yeah, and he’s not even on the 40-man. If A-rod went down now you’s have to think Hairston would step in as the every day.
Or Decaster would get called up as he has been hitting pretty well (depending on the 40-man situation).

Amazing that this team has had Ransom and Berroa on it and are still in first place. It’s almost like they are trying to keep teams in it.
Girardi will probably let him compete for a bench spot next year during ST.

I know we all complain about Ransom, but he is a bench player behind one the best 3rd baseman in the league. As was pointed out many times early in the year, not alot of players would be willing to sign on as a backup when most years Arod and Jeter play 300 combined games.
exactly, and plus the backup maybe racks up a total of one win. There are other problems on a team that mean more than a player who starts 20 games and are removed for pinch hitters when teh game counts.
And as was pointed out the way the Yankees have improved their bench in the past was to trade for players and make them backups).

As for players who play way below expectations, Rios is headed to Chicago for nothing. Sucks for the Yankees that the bluejays dont have to pay him the remainder on that contract.

Enough with kicking Cody Ransom. A major league regular he’s not, but I’ve seen lots worse players. He hit 26 HR’s last year (22 with AAA Scranton in a little over 400 AB, and 4 with the Yankees in 43 AB), and he’s pretty athletic, so he’s not without redeeming qualities.
He started the season as the Yankees’ regular 3rd basement because of Alex Rodriguez’ injury, and he got exposed. I’m not lobbying to return him to the big league club, but all this piling on is wasted energy.
