Game 123 Spillover Thread II
Hurry back, Jesus

Well that was an ugly one, but whatever. Sabathia-Beckett should be fun tomorrow.

Use this thread to talk about whatever you want tonight. The Mets are playing the Phillies and the Giants-Rockies are on the MLB Network. The latter game has major playoff implications, believe it or not. You’ve also got the Giants and Bears on NBC in preseason action. Anything goes, just be nice.

Oh, and you could come hang out with me at MLBTR too. I plan on dropping an Anchorman quote later. Should be fun.

Hurry back, Jesus
  • Dela G

Tomorrow will be a good game to watch

    I will be watching rays/rangers

    should be a fun game

  • Billy

im just gonna forget this game. we blow them out, they blow us out. tomorrow’s game should be close, and it’s a good thing there’s football to take my mind off today’s game. im looking foward to seeing more of hakeem nicks and ramses barden.

  • Rocky Road Redemption (formerly RAB poster)

Did anybody hear Susan Waldman make one of the stupidest comments ever? The Yankees had runners on base every ining. In this particular inning (forgot which it was) Derek Jeter had made an out onthe warning track. I believe it was Swisher who lined out. Then Tex singled. After Tex singled Susan Waldman said “They’re just not getting any good swings off this guy”.

This after a ball hit to the warning track, a line out, and a single. Not to mention we left runners on every inning.

    That is a DUMB comment.

    • JM

Yeah, but, come on, it’s Susan Waaaaahhhhldman.

  • Rocky Road Redemption (formerly RAB poster)

In my mind, this game didn’t happen.

    • Bob Stone

I like that type of thinking.

      • Rocky Road Redemption (formerly RAB poster)

It’s not thinking so much as the absence of thinking; if I never ever think of this game again, it’ll just drift away.

Of course, I consider myself an expert at not thinking.

    • thurdonpaul

      what game ?

  • Dela G

    carlos pena!

    1-0 rays

    • Rocky Road Redemption (formerly RAB poster)

What’s nice is that it really doesn’t matter who wins.

      • Dela G

        exactly

i like the rays because they are a fun team, so i root for them at times.

Plus i live in tejas, so i have to hear my rangers fans in school talk shit all day

        • Bob Stone

I live in CT and I’m a long time Yankee fan. My sister (also a school teacher like you . . . unless you are a student) started watching baseball because of me and adopted the Rays as her team this year.

          • Rocky Road Redemption (formerly RAB poster)

It has to be kind of fun to adopt a team. I’ve never really had that luxury, being raised as a NY fan since the womb.

Not that I dislike it or would even think of changing teams of course. Only saying that it has to be fun picking out a team and saying “This is my team.”. I was kind of raised a Yankees fan.

            • Dela G

yeah i dunno how people could adopt a team. I am a new yorker who my parents moved me at the age of 13 to texas. I am the biggest die hard yanks fan you’ll ever meet. My room here is blue, i have the logo on the ceiling, and have 2 stadium seats chillin in the corner of the room with other signed balls, bats, etc. Its so funny how my room looks like a kids room… But back to the point, i like to root for the rays to keep the red sox at bay since i would love to have the sox miss the playoffs since i hate them so much. :D

              • Bob Stone

I root for the Rays for the same reason.

            • Bob Stone

I am a lifelong, third generation Yankee fan (family was originally from the Bronx, two blocks from the Stadium)as well. My sister never got into it until this year. She picked the Rays because they are in the AL East, played well last year, were picked to be in the playoff hunt by many experts and most importantly, she liked their uniforms.

She’s bummed out though that she can’t see a lot of the games on TV like Yankeee and BoSox fans can here in CT.

              • Dela G

you gotta get her mlb.tv! ;)

          • Dela G

            oh and i am a student. I’m only 22 :)

      • http://www.theyankeeuniverse.com/ The Artist

Ummmm I dunno about that. If the Rays sweep, and the Red Sox lose 2 of 3 then the Wild Card picture looks like this:

        BOS 70-53
        TEX 68-55 (2 game back)
        TAM 68-55 (2 game back)

Very tight, with 5 weeks to go.

  • Rocky Road Redemption (formerly RAB poster)

Just a tip: I just checked out lohud. STAY AWAY. The thread is a sewer. Apparently Brnett is a choker and isn’t worth his contract, and this loss still proves we can’t beat good teams.

    Or so I’ve heard.

    • Bob Stone

I never go there as I’ve heard that it is dangerous to your positive mental well-being.

      • Rocky Road Redemption (formerly RAB poster)

Lohud can actually be quite fun, trolls nowithstanding.

I stay away from Yankees-Red Sox threads though.

    • Little Bill

And it starts with Abraham who said the game was over after the top of the 1st when the Yankees failed to score. Pete went on to say that if the Yankees had scored even 1 run that inning, it would have crushed the Red Sox spirit and they would have missed all of those bad pitches AJ was tossing.

You heard it from LOLHud 1st guys- If the Yankees had scored 1 run in the top of the 1st, they were a lock to win the game and shut out the Sox.

      • Rocky Road Redemption (formerly RAB poster)

        From Pete Abe:

UPDATE, 5:13 p.m.: This game was decided in the top of the first when the Yankees put two on with one out against Tazawa and did not score. If Burnett is up 2-0 or even 1-0, the Red Sox probably start thinking “Here we go again. Instead, Tazawa gets out of the jam, Burnett is the Bad A.J. again and now the Yankees will need CC to win them the series tomorrow.

The game is not over. But the Yankees seem to have little interest in good baseball today.

  • Steve H

At least Burnett was able to go 5 and we didn’t have to blow out the pen. Hughes/Mo lined up to go tomorrow, if needed.

  • Bob Stone

Rangers up on the Rays 2-1, bottom of the third.

Laird and Romine confirmed for Fall League

Vice president of baseball operations Mark Newman emailed this morning with the full list of confirmed Yankees for the Arizona Fall League. We already knew Ian Kennedy and Colin Curtis, but Newman added Austin Romine and Brandon Laird to the list. “More names to come,” he wrote. Those additional names will probably be pitchers, and we already know that lefties Mike Dunn and Zach Kroenke have been told they will likely go to the Arizona Fall League if they’re not called to New York in September.

    http://community.thetimes-tribune.com/blogs/yankees/archive/2009/08/22/laird-and-romine-confirmed-for-fall-league.aspx

Surprised Montero isn’t going, and the IPK is still eligible.

    • Reggie C.

Are these Rosters locked though? I’m not surprised the Yankees are holding back Montero. What’s to gain if montero slugged .600? Romine could use some exposure for sure.

      • http://www.theyankeeuniverse.com/ The Artist

The AFL is something of an collection of minor league all stars. He could gain some valuable experience. I’m guessing that he won’t go because he won’t be fully healed yet.

        • Reggie C.

When Tommy Hanson completely shut down lineups in his AFL time, that was impressive and a portent of things to come. For hitters, so many of them display power numbers that they cant replicate again. ALot of that success is illusory. Look at E. duncan.

          • JMK

            Portent. Nice word.

  • Dela G

    boy carlos pena again!

    3-2 rays

    • http://www.theyankeeuniverse.com/ The Artist

      Go Rays!!!

      • Dela G

        yeah!

  • http://www.theyankeeuniverse.com/ The Artist

    Updated Elias Rankings are out

    http://www.scribd.com/doc/19002885/Rankings-082209

    Type A-Johnny Damon

Type B-Andy Pettitte, Hideki Matsui, Jerry Hairston, Xavier Nady

Yanks could have a boatload of Supplementals next year, assuming they offer arb.

    • Steve H

Can Cash have Theo make the picks for him?

      • http://www.theyankeeuniverse.com/ The Artist

Only if he wants to have the greatest farm system ever.

      • Reggie C.

What’s bugging me right now is the realization that Theo could turn Billy Wagner into a couple 1st round supplemental picks. With the Owners vs. MLBPA battle around the corner, theo could really push for 1 last major haul in the 2010 draft. Theo’s had some success drafting in the supplemental rounds.

    • JMK

Yes, but wouldn’t they accept arbitration? I’d think Pettite, Matsui and Nady would definitely accept. Damon, who knows? I’d say it’s a no lose with Damon.

      • http://www.theyankeeuniverse.com/ The Artist

Right, that’s why I said “could”. You’d have to look at each one case by case.

  • Tony

It’s only the preseason, but watching Jacobs run people over is still enjoyable.

  • Rocky Road Redemption (formerly RAB poster)

Holy crap, now the lohuders are starting back up the nonsense that
Jorge can’t catch, and specifically that he can’t catch A.J.

    That’s just stupid.

  • http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_S0CViLms5ys/Sd54tE5sVMI/AAAAAAAAAho/0fxSZIso2OM/s400/Swisha+House.jpg Kevin G.

Heh, Brandon Jacobs just knocked down Brian Urlacher in the Giants game.

    • http://www.riveraveblues.com Mike Axisa

      Knocked down?

You’re too kind. It was like a bug hitting a windshield.

      • Rocky Road Redemption (formerly RAB poster)

        Word.

    • Reggie C.

Jacobs is gonna get his 1000 yards. Can he up it to elite yardage? With Bradshaw being smaller than D. Ward, its only more important for Jacobs to stay really productive.

      • Tony

He’s only going to get 250 carries tops. You want him to get 6 yards a carry?

        • Rocky Road Redemption (formerly RAB poster)

That would be kind of cool. If neigh impossible.

      • JMK

They have Ware, too, who I’ve heard has been impressive the past two training camps (he was injured last season).

        • Rocky Road Redemption (formerly RAB poster)

I’m a big Bradshaw fan. I’ve always contended that he was better than Ward.

  • http://www.theyankeeuniverse.com/ The Artist

(LoHud)Aceves in his last 19 innings: 17 runs on 21 hits.

    • JMK

      Yikes.

  • JobaJr

Couldn’t have said it better Mike.

Screw today, we’ll come back and take this series tomorrow.

  • Susan

Any time we score an obscene amount of runs, we usually have trouble scoring the next day. Well, that’s past us- now could we win tomorrow, a nice normal game, say 5-0, with C.C. going at least 7?

    • Rocky Road Redemption (formerly RAB poster)

Not saying you’re not right, but arre there stats backing this up?

  • Eirias

    That was a nice off-day.

  • Steve

I got drunk tonight, watched “Bruno”, and forgot all about the game today. Bruno is really funny!

    • PinstripesForeverDouglas

It certainly is not funny, while your sober, Steve!

  • Tremont

Mike Axisa, how do you pronounce your last name?

    • http://www.riveraveblues.com Mike Axisa

      Ax-ee-sa.

    • Tremont

Follow up question. What ethnicity is it?

      • http://www.riveraveblues.com Mike Axisa

        Maltese.

        • Dela G

cool name! i always thought it was ax-is-uh

          • Riddering

Either way, you can’t say “Mike Axisa” without “axe” and that is pretty badass.

  • DreDog

Tonight’s recap should read: Sometimes you eat the bar, sometimes the bar eats you.

    • PinstripesForeverDouglas

      How About this… “A.J. D.O.A.”

Cause as soon as the 1st inning was over, we knew it was going to be a long afternoon. Seriously, A.J. struggles in Fenway frustrate the hell out of me. No matter how many steps we take foward in this season, Burnett reminds the freakin Nation how they own our second best pitcher.

      Curse you A.J. the platapus!!
      /Dr. Doofenshmirtz’d

      • Rocky Road Redemption (formerly RAB poster)

        Nitpicking here, but…

        “Platapus” is spelled p-l-a-t-y-p-u-s, platypus.

        Now carry on.

  • PinstripesForeverDouglas

Dear Mo, this was one hell of a depressing day. Ya know I think most of us would accept a nice series win of 2 out of 3 but today…yikes! All I ever wanted is to bring in a pitcher who can give us a CHANCE to win a big game.
And for some reason A.J. has turned into Jose Contreas in Fenway this year. Unlike last year, when he had an era of 0.40 in three starts… damn how is this happening to us?! No matter how some in the Universe try to forgot about today’s humilation, it can’t be ignored as we move foward into crunch time. I swear all any of us wanted was to witness A.J. look competent today and for the 3rd time he couldn’t deliver.

    • Rocky Road Redemption (formerly RAB poster)

Nah, I can ignore it. And quite sucessfully.

      Try it! It’s fun!

  • Charlie Wilson
    • PinstripesForeverDouglas

Thanks Charlie for posting that link for that great vid on zell’s blog. While I won’t forget today’s drubbing like Rocky Road suggested, I will smile and keep a renewed sense of hope alive.

Freddy Schumen is one of the best fans in the Universe and his warm demeanor and positive attiutde is one I woul like to adopt more often. Thanks Freddy, wherever you are :)
