Game 139 Spillover Thread

By

People were actually complaining about the offense last inning.

Also, Tampa’s pen was already a wreck coming into today. They’re completely screwed the next two games, September callups or not.

Yeah, I give up on Tampa. They’re done.

  2. Johan Iz My Brohan says:

People were actually complaining about the offense last inning.

    Whoops =)

  3. Mike Pop says:

Alright AJ, go out there and shut em down for the next 2-3 innings.

    • scooter says:

The challenge for AJ is continuing to put those adjustments he worked on (with Eiland) into play in the game – and a long inning can mess with that.

  4. LivefromNewYork says:

Remember when Arod was going for number 500? It was weeks.

another pitcher’s confidence crushed by the yankees. and so it goes..

  6. Salty Buggah says:

Jeter made 2 outs in inning. Odd.

OK AJ, throw strikes and get this win.

  7. Drew says:

Michael can’t even get replays right.

    Oh that’s gone!

    No, that’s not gone.

  8. Dela G says:

damn, flaherty is piling it on kay

    i love it

  9. Charlie says:

    this playoff race is ovaaaa

  10. The answer is Steve Karsay.

  11. The Artist says:

I don’t think Jetes gets the record tonight.

It’s the 4th inning, and if this game gets any worse (likely) he’ll be pulled for Pena by the 7th inning. Maybe sooner, he did already play this afternoon.

    • Charlie says:

thats pretty obvious at this point. how could he get 3 more hits? he’d be lucky to get 3 more at bats, and his little slump + the nature of this game means he’s almost definitely not getting it today

  12. Salty Buggah says:

It would be awesome if the magic number could drop by 3 today.

  13. YankeeScribe says:

If Burnett has another quality start with Molina, should Girardi match those guys up in the playoffs?

    • Mike Pop says:

      No.

Posada should play every game in the playoffs unless he’s physically unable too.

    • Drew says:

No thanks. I’d rather AJ make good pitches to Jorge.

    • whozat says:

      No.

      No, no, no.

    • Charlie says:

absolutely not for the reasons stated above

    • Steve H says:

      En espanol: No.

    • Johan Iz My Brohan says:

I’d rather have Posada catch everyday, but there is nothing wrong in letting Molina catch in the playoffs with this offense we have.

      • whozat says:

Yes there is. You want to give yourself the best chance to win, and that mean Posada and Matsui both in there at the same time. Posada caught AJ plenty during his streak in the middle of the season.

    • The Artist says:

I would. No one bat is worth a garbage outing by my starting pitcher. Nobody impacts a game more than the starting pitcher, that’s Baseball 101. It may ultimately be AJ’s fault, or just two guys with very different approaches who can’t get on the same page. But that’s all irrelevant in the playoffs. I need my pitcher to be at his best, and I do whatever I have to do to make that happen.

I support Girardi trying like hell all year to get these guys together, but if AJ pitches like crap every time he throws to Jorge, I pull the plug in the playoffs.

      • Mike Pop says:

The problem is there is no factual evidence that Posada can’t catch A.J. It’s not like AJ has never thrown a good game to Po. But it is a fact that Posada makes the lineup better than Molina does.

        • YankeeScribe says:

Even if Posada’s game-calling is not the problem, his struggles with Burnett’s nastier pitches makes it tougher for Burnett to pitch effectively.

It’ a given that Posada makes the lineup better but you’re risking Burnett struggling early and giving the offense a 4 or 5 run deficit to overcome against the opposing team’s #2 starter.

        • The Artist says:

Absolutely Jorge makes the lineup better, no one disputes that. But if you come to the conclusion that those two don’t work well together, whether it’s happened all year or has developed over time, then you do whatever needed to make sure you get as good an outing as possible from your starter. Personally, I’d DH Posada over Matsui, unless Matsui is on one of his crazy hot streaks.

BTW-Have you noticed how many times Molina has caught CC? Is it OK for CC but not for AJ?

        • The Artist says:

“The problem is there is no factual evidence that Posada can’t catch A.J.”

Sorry Mike, I know that’s the zeitgeist around here but it’s not true. Look at his splits by catcher, there’s a huge disparity.

          http://www.baseball-reference......;t=p#catch

      • YankeeScribe says:

        +1

      • whozat says:

“I support Girardi trying like hell all year to get these guys together, but if AJ pitches like crap every time he throws to Jorge, I pull the plug in the playoffs.”

This is the flaw in your logic.

This isn’t true. AJ’s has been sucking for a month and Posada has been behind the plate. Before that, he rattled off like, 12 dynamite starts…and Posada was behind the plate for most of them.

You want the answer to be “it’s Posada’s fault” because then there’s a button that can be pushed to fix it. So you look for evidence to allow you to believe that. But it’s bullshit. AJ is having some rough starts BECAUSE THIS IS THE GUY HE HAS ALWAYS BEEN. He’s a two-pitch pitcher with, at times, spotty command. It doesn’t matter who catches him. This is how he has always been.

        • The Artist says:

“You want the answer to be “it’s Posada’s fault””

Nope. In a perfect world I want the best lineup out there. But I’m not so locked into an ideological position like you are that I won’t consider the alternative. They’ve had repeated issues this year that have been well publicized. I won’t ignore those facts, or his splits by Catcher which are stark.

          http://www.baseball-reference......;t=p#catch

BTW-Your ‘this is who he is’ line is what isn’t factual. He’s at a career high in wild pitches at 17 this year (14 was his previous high in 02) and is on pace to DOUBLE last years total. That’s HIGHLY unusual, and tells you he and Posada can’t get it together.

    • YankeeScribe says:

Burnett sucks with Posada. Why risk AJ blowing a pivitol game?

      • Drew says:

It’s up to AJ not to blow a pivotal game.

He doesn’t suck with Posada. This is not a fact.

        • whozat says:

Maybe if we keep saying that he does, though, it will become true. We can write articles about how “people are saying” it, and then maybe keep asking the players about it to see if our campaign of bs is working.

          • YankeeScribe says:

It’s been clear all season that Burnett isn’t as comfortable with Posada behind the plate. Posada gets too many passed balls

            • whozat says:

No, it hasn’t. You’re starting with the assumption that Posada and AJ don’t work well together and trying to create evidence to support your preconceived notion.

How did AJ rattle off a series of impressive starts, during which he pitched to Posada plenty of times? Was that magic? Was Posada better at blocking pitches then? What? Or, are you just looking at the last month and trying to find reasons that it HAS to be something that Girardi can do something about? It can’t just be that AJ is inconsistent with his stuff, because then we just have to be patient and hope he figures his shit out.

  22. MikeD says:

I hate it when Kay starts talking about Bill James and the “closer by committee” story. He always gets it wrong because he doesn’t understand what James said.

    • Andy In Sunny Daytona says:

I always picture Bill James to act like an uncooler Milton from “Office Space”.

    • The Artist says:

Yeah, you still need a Closer (or ‘Relief Ace’) James just suggested he be used more as a ‘Fireman’ in key situations earlier in the game rather than for the final 3 outs.

That’s actually how closers like Goose/Fingers/Quisenberry were used when I was a kid in the 70s.

  23. Put that in your shift and smoke it.

  24. whozat says:

Yes, Michael, one team with a shitty bullpen admitting they had no closer “proved” that you MUST anoint one. Because teams that DON’T admit they have no closer and just anoint one anyway do SOOOOO much better than the 03 Sox or whoever he’s talking about.

  25. Dela G says:

TEX SAYS EFF YOUR DEFENSIVE ALIGNMENT

  26. zs190 says:

I thought their bullpen was shot according to Axisa. How can you justify pulling Bradford after 7 pitches if you have a somewhat depleted bullpen and down by 7?

  27. Steve H says:

It’s taken about 10 years, but these fools in Boston are beginning to figure out that the C wearing “captain” of the Sox has been overrated all these years. My friends have finally started to crack but it’s nice to see Mike Lowell’s comments.

“I’ve always thought [calling a game] was a little bit overrated,’’ said Mike Lowell. “He caught the Indians and they had a pretty damn good pitching staff. It’s not like he’s doing something for the first time.’’

      • Steve H says:

I actually heard some idiot radio host the other mention how V-Mart’s catchers era is the worst in the league. The co-host blew that up and asked what his catchers era was in 2007 when CC won the cy young and Carmona had his great year. Shut the Tek lover up pretty quickly.

        • Mike Pop says:

My bro-in-law tells me that last year during football season, there were fans that actually called in and suggested that the Pats trade Brady and keep Matty C. It was pretty amusing.

  30. MikeD says:

Uhh, Michael, Swish has a .370 OBP at Yankee Stadium, even though he hasn’t hit well, so he just did what he’s been doing all year.

  31. LivefromNewYork says:

He’s saying throw strikes you idiot.

  46. alex gonzalez says:

AJ pitches much better to molina. Coincidence?

    • Mike Pop says:

Nope. If Posada was catching, it would be a 8-1 ballgame. The other way around.

      • alex gonzalez says:

it was just an honest question. thank for that well thought out response.

        • Mike Pop says:

Well, I don’t believe that whoever is catching has this huge of an effect on a pitcher. Especially a guy like A.J. Since this has been AJ’s game his whole career.

          • The Artist says:

Even if they have totally different philosophies on how to get hitters out?

Posada believes in sticking to the game plan, which is great. But some pitchers don’t care about the scouting report, they feel that if they’re on their game and play to what they have and/or do well than it will be a good outing.

Pitchers strengths as opposed to hitters weaknesses.

            • whozat says:

I’d like to think we can all agree that AJ’s recent problems stemmed from an inability to throw strikes, especially with his fastball. That seems pretty clear, from the data.

Your hypothesis, despite the fact that AJ has gone through bouts of this throughout his career, is that it’s because Posada stubbornly sticks to the game plan?

        • whozat says:

Dude, there’s a discussion about all this earlier in THIS VERY THREAD. It’s been beaten to death in blogs all over the internet.

If you’re too lazy to go look it up, don’t be surprised if people blow you off.

        • bonestock94 says:

          Cone, Mussina, Wells, Clemens, etc.

          I don’t recall Posada’s game-calling being questioned back then.

    • Dela G says:

      boy i knew you’d show up…

    • Brazilian Yankee says:

      Yeah, totally.

    • YankeeScribe says:

He seems more comfortable when anybody other than Passed-ball Posada is catching…

      • whozat says:

Sure, if you ignore all the bad games he had throwing to other catchers and all the good games he threw to Posada, it certainly seems that way.

      • Drew says:

That’s funny, you call ‘em “Passed Ball Posada.” I call him “HOF Posada.”

        • alex gonzalez says:

          i call him “Piss-on-my-hands Posada”

        • YankeeScribe says:

Yankee HOF maybe, not sure if he’s got Cooperstown numbers. Posada is a great hitter but behind the plate he’s not that good. I’m content with him spending the rest of his career as a DH

    • MikeD says:

He may have had his worst game of the year pitching to Molina, and he had his best game pitching to Posada. Means nothing. He just was slumping.

      • YankeeScribe says:

It basically comes down to who you think AJ is more likely to shit the bed with: Posada or Molina? And do you want AJ to take that pre-conceived notions of Posada’s game-calling or defense into a big game in the playoffs…

  47. Riddering says:

    • Drew says:

Yeah saw that. Hopefully this is the Canes’ year.

      • BigBlueAL says:

Only thing frustrating so far is the soft coverage the UM secondary is playing.

      • Andy In Sunny Daytona says:

You should be drawn and quartered for that comment.

        • BigBlueAL says:

LOL hey I live in Miami so gotta root for the Canes. Not that passionate about it since I didnt attend UM (attended FIU for a bit) but when I moved down here the only thing anybody around here cared about was the Dolphins and Canes so I naturally gravitated to rooting for the Canes since I didnt root for any college team at the time.

          • Drew says:

  56. Brazilian Yankee says:

I hope Jetes can get those 4 hits out of the way soon…

  57. MikeD says:

I was at the first game this afternoon and they played a tribute to Jeter before his first AB. Most of the fans around me seemed to think playing the tribute when he was still four hits away might take him out of his game and he’d end up going 0 for eight today. Sadly, they’ve been right…

  58. Drew says:

MIchael Kay totally studied Kim’s Myspace page.

  59. Mike Pop says:

Michael Kay has a thing for Kim Jones.

  60. No Halladay says:

I know that the record is a good story, but LG would have had a ton of hits more if not for the illness. I think Jeter should mention that and maybe state that when he hits 3,000 that would be more meaningful.

    • He also walked a lot more than Jeter did.

    • Zack says:

Jeter should apologize for not getting a life taking illness?

      • No Halladay says:

Did I say apologize? Do you know how to read? No he should acknowledge it because it’s true, LG would have had 3,000 without much problem.

        • Zack says:

And when he gets to 3,000 should he say, well LG would have gotten this many so I’m not really the 1st Yankee to get 3,000. LG got sick and died, and yes Jeter will give his cliche answers. But the record is what the record is. LG and that era never faced a black/latin pitcher- is that mentioned when talking about their records?

          • No Halladay says:

Apparently you think you know Jeter, and so you know that he will show respect and probably mean it. You on the other hand don’t have any. You could also argue that Jeter played during a steriod era and is suspect also. It does not always relate to size and power. For every Sosa, there is also a Knoblauch. Forget about the era we’re in now?

            • Zack says:

I dont have any respect because I dont count ‘what ifs’ or ‘he would of had’?

Exactly my point- No minorities v Steroid era. Pitchers 280+ IP v 200 ip with fresh bullpen arms to come get the hitter in the 7-8-9. 1B v SS. You can go on all day about the differences between 1996-2009 and 1925-1939. Gehrig is an all time great, Jeter is an all time great.

    • Joe D. says:

Should Jeter also mention that Gehrig might not have had 2,700+ hits if he had to play against all races instead of just whites?

  70. No Halladay says:

I’m waiting to see who gets hot at the end of the year and makes the WC in either league. The WC teams seem to have a lot of momentum going into the playoffs. I don’t agree with the “rest the players” philosophy. The team that’s hot usually enters the playoffs with an advantage.

All AJ/Posada starts that he pitched pretty damn well in. Probably wasted my time since all the haters still won’t believe it but come on. Seven starts that I would take any day of the week. That’s more starts than Molina has even caught AJ. AJ is a streaky pitcher, stop it with all this Po can’t catch Burnett talk. Please.

  91. Nick says:

About the whole Teixeira vs. Mauer vs. Jeter MVP debate

the twins record in April without Mauer 12-11 the twins record now 69-68. sure he has gaudy numbers, but he hasn’t been a difference maker for the twins and he hasn’t gotten them any closer to the playoffs

  92. Mike Axisa says:

77 pitches for Bennett. The most he’d thrown before that this year was 44. April 23, 2008 was the last time he threw at least 77 pitches, when he was a starter.

  93. Mike Pop says:

Good start from AJ. Let’s get back on track here.

  94. Tom Zig says:

Kind of lame to take out Burnett so early, but hey great outing.

Should have let him come out and then leave to a standing ovation.

    • zs190 says:

Eh, 99 pitches through 6. We are up by 10 with a 99.9% chance to make the playoffs, no need to use him for another inning. Isn’t this how we wanted it? score a ton off Sonnanstine and let the mop up guys finish it? I would say the game is pretty much picture perfect. We could have scored like 20 today if not for some double plays, but winning by 10 or something is perfectly fine.

We have had 23 baserunners in 6 innings, that’s pretty crazy.
