Game 140: 40 games over?

By

With a win tonight, the Yankees would go 40 games over .500. It’s pretty crazy to think about. Even at the beginning of the season, when the threat was strong from both the Sox and the Rays, the thought of being at this point didn’t cross many of our minds. Even if one team fell behind, surely there’d be a September race for the AL East crown. Alas, we’re moving through September (it’s the freaking 8th already), and the Yanks have a comfortable lead in the AL East, and the Rays are all but out of it.

They’ll take the field today behind Chad Gaudin. Since he’s come over from San Diego, Gaudin has started two games and has run into trouble each time. The first time it was a bases loaded, one out situation in the fifth inning. He had walked five to that point, and Girardi had seen enough. The second time was last time out, where he lasted 3.2 innings against Toronto. Thankfully, the offense was there to back him up.

Walks have been the big problem for Gaudin since his move to the AL East. He’s issued 13 free passes in 17.2 innings, an unacceptable rate. He’s held opponents to just eight runs in that span, but if he keeps walking guys at that rate it’s going to catch up for him. Thankfully, he has his personal caddy, Al Aceves, ready for backup work.

David Price will stand on the rubber for the Rays. The 2007 first overall pick has had a rough go in his first season, allowing 59 runs, 51 earned, in 96.2 innings for a 4.75 ERA. In fact, it appears he’s having struggles similar to Joba Chamberlain. That consists of a high walk rate, resulting in a high WHIP. The strikeouts are there, but Price, like Joba, has to find a way to finish off more batters and avoid drawn-out at bats which result in walks.

Boston hit Price rather hard last time out, picking up four runs on six hits and two walks over 5.1 innings, forcing the tall lefty to toss 104 pitches in that span. that’s been one of Price’s problems this year (as it has been Joba’s). In the two starts preceding Boston, against Texas and Detroit, Price went 7 and 7.1 innings, allowing three and one runs. We know he has the ability, but like many young pitchers he’s still working to put it together.

Derek gets a day at DH. Maybe that will spark him to a couple of hits. And, of course by now you know the David Robertson news.

Lineup:

1. Derek Jeter, SS
2. Johnny Damon, LF
3. Mark Teixeira, 1B
4. Alex Rodriguez, 3B
5. Nick Swisher, RF
6. Jorge Posada, C
7. Robinson Cano, 2B
8. Melky Cabrera, CF
9. Jerry Hariston, SS

And on the mound, number forty-one, Chad Gaudin.

Time to make Price throw strikes, otherwise it’ll be a bullpen feast by the 5th.

    • Accent Shallow says:

I wonder why we didn’t get the “Price to the bullpen” narrative this year? Rays pen wasn’t exactly lights out.

  2. JobaWockeeZ says:

Let’s go Yanks! Win and get more wins than you did last year! They have a good shot of winning 100 games.

Gaudin looks like he is trying to make up all the innings he forced the bullpen to throw in his previous 2 starts. I’m predicting at least 6 innings if not 7.

  38. Drew says:

Why the hell are Texas and cleveland playing a double header the way they are? Why didn’t they just do a 1:00 then a 7:00? I’ve never heard of a 5:00 start time.

    • Chris says:

It’s a single admission double header. Just like in the good old days. You know, when pitchers weren’t babied by ‘pitch counts’ or Tommy John Surgery.

    • PinstripesForeverDouglas says:

It’s Cleveland, Drew. Baseball doesn’t live there anymore… or at the very least is in a deep coma. Thanks to Mr. Sharpiro!

  39. The Artist says:

Red Sox are up 4-0 huh?

    How cute.

  40. Slu says:

Enough with the kid and the hat. Nobody fucking cares.

  41. Johan Iz My Brohan says:

    I hate the Orioles

  42. LivefromNewYork says:

Kay did nice Jeter stuff on the radio today including comments from Donnie Baseball.

    • The Artist says:

Yeah, I heard that. He said the Gene Michael recounted a story from 2 years ago that Jetes told him he’d like to play another TEN years and chase the Hit record and/or 4,000 hits. He was 33 at the time, so that would mean he’d like another 5 year deal after this one expires. Not sure the Yanks feel the same way, but we’ll see.

      • Derek Jeter’s plan to break Pete Rose’s record:

        1) Get Washington Nationals to let him be player-manager
        2) Steal underwear
        3)
        4) PROFIT!

        • The Artist says:

Derek Jeter’s Plan B to break Pete Rose’s record:

          1) Legally change his name to Pete Rose
          2) Start gambling heavily
          3) Defame Bart Giamatti
          4) PROFIT!

      • Chris says:

I know it gets missed because of Jeter, but A-Rod is a year younger than Jeter and he’s already at 2509 hits. If he averages 200 hits per season for the rest of his contract, that puts him at 4100 hits – within striking distance of Rose. (He won’t average 200 hits per season, but it’s interesting for comparison)

        • Accent Shallow says:

It wouldn’t surprise me at all to see both A-Rod and Jeter in the top 10 all time for hits when they’re done.

However, A-Rod has a significant hip injury that may require further surgery and/or cause issues down the line that could significantly affect his playing time. Jeter does not have that issue.

          • Chris says:

While A-Rod has the injury to contend with, he also has a contract that take him until he’s 42. Jeter won’t get a contract that covers when he turns 42 until he’s 41(at least I hope not).

A-Rod has to average 100 hits per season for the remainder of his contract to crack the top 10 for hits. I have more doubts about his ability to break the all time HR record than his ability to crack the top 10 in hits.

  43. That’s not a coincidence, Michael. It’d be a coincidence if Price gave up the hit that pushed Jeter over the record.

  44. Chris says:

Funniest quote I’ve seen in a while. From the owner of the Rays:

Winning 89 games in the AL East is like winning 93 in the AL Central, and 147 in the National League.

    http://www.newsday.com/sports/.....-1.1431147

    • PinstripesForeverDouglas says:

Hmmm, people didn’t want to hear our excuses last year with all our struggles & injuries. Why should it matter when the Rays suffer for it this year? Too bad they play in the toughest division but maybe next year the Roid Sux suffer that tragic fate.

    • Haha, that quote is all sorts of awesome.

    • nathan says:

Hey come on now… havnt u heard from Pete Abe that NL West is one of the toughest divisions… and Joe Torre is the #1 reason the Dodgers are great… and all the young talent in Dodgerville only developed coz of him…

Deja vu… i heard some complaints from fans on the OC radio that the bullpen arms are toast and Torre is taxing them… where hv we heard tht one b4

  45. Omar says:

Maybe Jeter won’t break Gehrig’s record.

  46. nathan says:

Just flip the roles… if it was ARod on the verge of the Gehrig record and he went for 0-10 how wud the Ny media react… i am sure Steve Phillips would be jumping up n down in the booth…

  47. Drew says:

Kay, he went 0-7 two games in a row 2 weeks ago.

    It happens.

  48. Johan Iz My Brohan says:

Pedroia, go back to the fucking north pole…

  49. Drew says:

    http://www.mlbtraderumors.com/.....-henn.html

I don’t know what’s worse, the fact that the O’s got Sean Henn, or the name of the man that reported it.

  50. The Artist says:

Gosh, these two have zero chemistry. I might have to put my radio on soon, this is painful.

  51. Dela G says:

man i just got back from a power outage which lasted about 2 hours

good to see that swishahouse homered!

  52. How many times has Flash said what he said about Burrell? Jeebus H. Mo.

And who the fuck is talking about Kendry Moales as an MVP?

    • And who the fuck is talking about Kendry Morales as an MVP?

People who believe in the following two things:
      1) Joe Mauer should not be MVP because the Twins are not winning their division at the moment and thus, all Twins players must somehow suck
      2) Yankees should never win MVP’s because the Yankees are mean bullies who are bad for baseball and I hate them because they took my lunch money.

      • Chris says:

In all seriousness, the writers vote for the top 10 spots on the MVP ballots. As long as someone could or should finish in the top 10, then they should be discussed. They shouldn’t win (Mauer should), but they should be discussed.

  53. Riddering says:

    WHOOOOOO.

I love strike ‘em out, throw ‘em outs! I’d also like to point out that Posada is behind the plate for Gaudin.

  54. Drew says:

Anyone else’s gameday not reading the speed or pitch type?

  55. Dela G says:

    Great play!

Strike em out, throw em out!

  56. Accent Shallow says:

What’s the deal with Gaudin’s action pic? That’s the best they could find?

  57. Johan Iz My Brohan says:

    Great defense today.

  58. Bugsy says:

god, there is as much bullshit surrounding Jeter as there is surrounding A-Rod.

  59. The Artist says:

UPDATE, 6:36 p.m.: Spoke to Robertson. He said he’s been pitching with it for two weeks now. There has been no drop in velocity or command, just tightness after he’s done pitching. He had an MRI and said no injury was apparent.

“I’m confident it’s not going to be anything,” he said.

Robertson has never had elbow issues before.

    http://yankees.lhblogs.com/200.....t-yankees/

If he’s not worried, it would be silly for me to be.

    • Accent Shallow says:

Yeah. I’d imagine most visits to Andrews are for a second opinion more than anything. The man is one of, if not the leading expert on pitchers’ arms.

    • If he’s not worried, it would be silly for me to be.

      Agreed.

      (cue Stephen A. Smith voice)

How-evah, athletes are notorious for A) covering up injuries and B) thinking that they’re bulletproof and can perform through injuries.

David Robertson’s word alone helps, but it shouldn’t hold a ton of weight, IMO. The MRI gives me more angst relief than D-Rob’s statement.

      • Chris says:

I agree. Having Robertson say he’s going to be fine is meaningless. Having Robertson say the MRI didn’t show an injury is a good sign.

My concern, however, is the remaining question of what type of injury it is. These injuries without an obvious cause can sometimes take a long time to heal because there isn’t any obvious they can treat, and no way to confirm he’s healthy other than having him pitch (probably at 100% effort).

  60. Tex’s legs: moving fast, but getting him no where.

  61. Michael Kay just used the words “surmise” and “stimuli” during a baseball broadcast. Wow.

  62. Johan Iz My Brohan says:

This is pathetic, the O’s pitchers are leaving every single pitch right down the middle.

  63. The Artist says:

I bet Jorge Posada catches Price on the road.

  64. Brazilian Yankee says:

    Price has gotten 12 outs on 4 K’s and 8 groundouts… damn!

  65. Gregg Zaun is not an attractive man.

  66. Bugsy says:

i bet the vast majority of life in the minors is incredibly sad, like that movie Sugar

  67. Accent Shallow says:

    Holy shit, Zaun’s Gameday pic!

  68. Accent Shallow says:

    And that works.

  69. pat says:

Gaudin gettin more DP than jenna jameson

  70. Dela G says:

that was a beauty of a DP

  71. The Artist says:

Let’s be honest, John Flaherty could have Nick Swisher, RuPaul, Jim Carrey and Cedric the Entertainer in the broadcast booth with him and he would still suck the life out of that room every time he opened his mouth.

  72. Swisher with 2/3 of the TTO.

  73. pat says:

Hughes always looks incredulity bored in the bullpen. They should just let him sleep in the lockerroom until teh 8th.

  74. Chris says:

It’s nice to hear Kay suggest that David Price should be a closer.

  75. Riddering says:

We haven’t seen Joba dominate a lineup for multiple innings?

    Really?

  76. Drew says:

    PUT DOWN THE TWIZZLERS!

  77. Joba Chamberlain has a 4.41 ERA (101+) and 7.7 K/9 as a 23 year old in his first full season of starting pitching in the A.L. East. That’s success. It’s not the level of success we had hoped for, but to be that young, in this division, to be league average in one’s first full season of starting is successful.

    • Joba sucks. Trade him for Jesse Barfield at once.

    • Accent Shallow says:

His last several starts have been lousy, so I’d like to see at least one more good appearance before the postseason.

    • Johan Iz My Brohan says:

I wish his K/9 was a little higher though. He just isn’t blowing hitters away this year, though I fully expect him to blow hitters away next season.

    • Rocky Road Redemption (formerly RAB poster) says:

I disagree. I think Joba’s had a bad first season starting. He has pitched very few innings (bad) and has had a lot of unearned runs(bad). Also, I believe yhat in his wins he has had an abnormally high BABIP.

I think Joba is a future Ace, and can point to toher future Aces as precedent as to why exactly Joba should be a starter, but I think he’s been pretty bad.

      • pat says:

He’s on an innings limit, how are unearned runs his fault?

        • Accent Shallow says:

Well, it depends. If Joba induces a soft fly ball that Gardner overruns and plays into an inside-the-park homer, that’s not his fault. If someone makes an error behind him, he still can pick that player up.

        • Rocky Road Redemption (formerly RAB poster) says:

Being on an innings limit is only part of the story. He has had a lot of long innings and bad games and been removed way too early, which in part protected his ERA as well.

Of course SOME of the unearned runs aren’t his fault but the abnormally high number does indicate a pattern.

          • You know why he’s been inconsistent? He’s 23 and in his first full season of starting pitching. It’s going to happen. I’d be more pissy and worried about this if he was being counted on to be a top of the rotation guy right now.

          • Chris says:

The innings limit has had more of an impact than you’re acknowledging. This year, AJ Burnett has 8 starts where he’s thrown less than 100 pitches. For Andy, that number is 7. For Joba, it’s 11 (not counting his one where he was injured in the first and his last two that were significantly limited).

On the other end of the spectrum, AJ has 10 starts of more than 110 pitches. Andy has 6. Joba has none.

One final way to look at it: Joba averages 97.8 pitches per start. Andy averages 103.6 and AJ averages 105.6. Again, I’m not counting Joba’s 3 short starts. If you add on a few innings here and there to bring his pitch counts in line with the other pitchers, then he’d be on target for 180-190 innings this year.

      • If those numbers didn’t come from Joba Chamberlain, would you think they were better? Probably. I think we didn’t properly temper our expectations. We were all salivating at his performance as a starter and thinking he could repeat that. We were wrong. Joba’s been frustrating at times and inconsistent, but all in all, he’s still been an average ML pitcher.

  78. Dela G says:

posada and matsui have to be the two biggest breaking ball strikeout hitters on this team

  79. Drew says:

    Good AB by the Melkster.

  80. chriskeo says:

I just realized this, in the RAB lineup there are two SS and no DH, i dont think that would fly with the umpire.

  81. Drew says:

Don’t leave that thing up Mr. Price. Leche will make you pay.

  82. Accent Shallow says:

Well, if you’re going to swing at an eye-level pitch, the least you can do is miss a home run by about 20 feet. (Foul-wise, not track-wise)

  83. Chris says:

Just poking around Baseball-Reference, and I realized that when the Yankees win the World Series Angel Berroa will get a World Series ring.

  84. Dela G says:

    Gaudin is a fielding NINJA!

  85. Tampa Yankee says:

File this under: “unlikely pitching duels”

  95. Bugsy says:

i just went over Joba’s game logs for this year and threw up a little in my mouth. those are seriously some disgusting number, yet I’m confident that he’ll dominate next year.

  100. Michael Kay’s ball-reading skills are terrible.

  101. Dela G says:

    lol that was inside

  102. JGS says:

    so freaking unclutch

  103. A-Rod does not care for David Price’s fastball.

  104. Accent Shallow says:

It’s only the 6th inning, that’s not clutch! They already have the lead, so he’s just padding his stats!

    /kidding

  105. Dela G says:

a-rod says FUCK YO COUCH PRICE

  106. Wow, nice range Zobrist.

  107. Drew says:

    Can’t wait for always sunny!

  108. Bugsy says:

i never understood the charge of selfishness against A-Rod or any baseball player for that matter. Isn’t it optimum for the player to do the thing that’s absolutely the best for him at any give time, which is essentially absolutely the best thing for the team? I understand that there are some very minor exceptions but overall this holds true for all baseball players.

  109. gxpanos says:

That lame commercial for heating oil with that guy talking would be way better if he was like, “1 wife, 1 mistress, 2 kids, 2 cats…”

  110. Dela G says:
