Game 142: Or, maybe not

By

Update 8:00 p.m.: They’re saying first pitch around 8:20. I’ll believe it when I see it.

Update 7:00 p.m.: Yeah, definitely a delay.

Update 6:56 p.m.: The Yankees Weather Twitter feed says there’s a delay. The beat reporters haven’t heard.

It’s still rainy out, but as of this moment it appears they’ll play the game. We’ll let you know if we hear otherwise.

So, to kick things off:

Say what you will about George Bush, but that was a strike, from the mound, with a flak jacket. Then there’s the whole schtick with Jeter: “This is Yankee Stadium,” Jeter said. “You’ll get booed if you don’t throw from the mound.”

If they get this one in, the Yanks will face off against rookie Chris Tillman. A 2006 second-round pick of the Seattle Mariners, Tillman headed to Baltimore in the Erik Bedard trade. Quite a steal for Andy MacPhail and company, indeed. Tillman’s stock shot up after last season when he experienced success as the youngest player in the Eastern League. Heading into the 2009 season he was ranked 22 in Baseball America’s Top 100 Prospects. He dominated at AAA this year before finally getting the call on July 29.

He’s gotten off to a rough start, allowing 24 earned runs in 46.1 innings so far. Like many young pitchers, he’s had trouble striking out major league hitters, his K/9 at 4.7 after being up around a strikeout per inning in the minors. Still, there’s no doubt he’s a legitimate talent. He’s just got to put it together. Thankfully for them (but unfortunately for the Yankees), the Orioles have learned much about patience over the years.

After sweeping the Rays, the Yankees come into the series 8-2 in their last 10. They’ll send Andy Pettitte out to keep the streak going. He’s one of the big reasons the Yankees have played so well in the second half. While Joba and Burnett were struggling in August, Pettitte was busy getting outs. He had a 2.50 ERA for the month, though he had one disproportionately bad start. Even so, he struck out 39 in 39.2 innings, an insane number for him.

Since the All-Star Break, Pettitte is 5-1 with a 2.88 ERA, and the team is 8-2 when he pitches. He’s held opponents to a meager .573 OPS,a nd has struck out 65 in 65.2 innings. His WHIP in that span is just a hair above 1.00. Andy will continue to work towards his incentives in September, and he deserves every one of them. It’s difficult to overstate his contribution to the 2009 team.

The only note, other than them trying to get this game in, is that Johnny Damon‘s out of the lineup with back issues. Word is it locked up. I’d think it’s doubtful we see Johnny until Sunday at the earliest.

It’s cool, it’s rainy, let’s see some baseball.

Lineup:

1. Derek Jeter, SS
2. Nick Swisher, RF
3. Mark Teixeira, 1B
4. Alex Rodriguez, 3B
5. Hideki Matsui, DH
6. Jorge Posada, C
7. Robinson Cano, 2B
8. Melky Cabrera, LF
9. Brett Gardner, CF

And on the mound, number forty-six, Andy Pettitte.

Ill say this for ole Bush….it was one of the best first pitches youll ever see

      agreed.

I can’t get over how much younger he looks. Note to self: don’t become President.

(And for once, I’d like to see a dignitary throw a pitch a la the one Coney threw earlier this year.)

Can’t find it now, but I saw pics of Clinton, Bush and Obama the day they announced. Then pics 8 years later (current for O). Those dudes age in dog years.

    • Joey says:

Got chills down my spine remembering that and rewatching it, even more-so when you hear the voice announcing the game. “Thank you… Mr. President”

  4. crawdaddie says:

I just read Keith Law’s latest chat transcript. Tell me again how he’s not anti-Yankees.

    • gxpanos says:

Well what’d he say? Because I’d be willing to bet it at first seems anti-Yankees to us, but, upon further reflection, becomes a lot closer to objective.

      • Mike Axisa says:

He said that Jeter passing Gehrig wasn’t that big a deal, in no uncertain terms.

        • You know what? It really isn’t, if you’re not a Yankee fan. Should Jeter be getting a lot of attention in the New York area for what he’s about to do? Of course he should. But nationally, no it shouldn’t be a story unless it’s 3,000 hits.

      • crawdaddie says:

Keith, I’m a HUGE Red Sox fan and an even bigger Yankee hater. But I really can’t understand how most experts devalue Jeter’s contributions to his team and the game. Sarcasm aside, the guys gonna end up with 3000 hits and rightfully, in the Hall of Fame.

        Keith Law (1:49 PM)

I haven’t argued with either point; I think he’ll probably end up in the mid-3000s in hits and finish in the top 10. I just don’t understand why we’re making a big deal about him taking over the top spot in hits for the Yankees. Would we do this for the Pirates? Cleveland?

“Would we do this for the Pirates? Cleveland?”Thats just it KLAW, we are NOT talking about the Pirates or Cleveland. We are talking about the NY Yankees. The greatest franchise in the history of sports. Home of some of the greatest all time players.

        Keith Law (1:56 PM)

They’re the greatest franchise in the history of sports? Who said that? Oh, wait, the YANKEES said that. I guess we should believe them.

How mnay times have writers either compared a player to Derek Jeter or said he was going to better than Derek Jeter?

        Keith Law (2:00 PM)

        I can’t remember one.

I’m a Mets fan, but when you pass names like Ruth and Gehrig on just about any list…I think a little extra hype is ok.

        Keith Law (2:05 PM)

Yeah, I remember when Al Oliver passed Gehrig on the hits list, we got a day off school.

        • ranger11 says:

          That’s pretty nasty.

        • Rocky Road Redemption (formerly RAB poster) says:

Um, maybe they’re the best franchise in the history of sports because they have the most tieles by far and four players that are among the legends of the baseball world.

Like Gehrig is a no game guy. And who said anything about taking off of school? We’re not allowed to be happy that the person will be passing Lou Gehrig, one of the game’s all time greats, and will soon have the ost hits in Yankees history, that at least by the measurement of world titles and all time great players is the best franchise in all of sports.

But I guess we shouldn’t care because Keith Law said so. I guess we should believe him.

    • PinstripesForeverDougie says:

I don’t believe anyone will disagree with you on that one crawdaddie. Still, what do you expect from any employee of NESPN? Professional journalism died long ago over at that media outlet.

  5. CanoFTW says:

Hmm so wouldn’t it be strange if Jeter breaks Gehrig’s record tonight and gets the standing ovation, only to have the game rained out and the hit being taken away? So he would have to break Gehrig’s record twice!

  6. JMK says:

I just want Jeter to get that final hit so we can stop talking about it. I’m really sick of it.

  7. I’m a horrible person, because I am gleeful my tickets are for tomorrow’s game…

  8. Christian says:

So what time do you guys think this game will start?

  9. uncle stevie says:

have I been cut off ? cant see other posts…..or am I just a mOron ?

  10. Dela G says:

Let’s hope the game gets in!

let them play let them play let them play

  15. aj says:

Why is it that no one can make a decent list of the top 10 best Yankees ever? I don’t want to see Jeter ahead of Yogi, or Mattingly ahead of Whitey Ford.

  16. Mike Axisa says:

Lester starts, throws 24 pitches, allows three baserunners, and it start raining with one out in the top of the first. Boston’s going to lose one of his starts because of the rain.

  17. Jeffrey says:

Tyler Kepner tweeted before that not only did Damon’s back lock up, but both hamstrings are bothering him also. Do the Yankees need to be cautious when considering resigning Damon? He has been mostly healthy this year with the occasional days off, but I think we need to be cautious about his health. I don’t want Damon to be a clone of Matsui next year, gotta make sure he can be an option of more than just DH. As long as his health holds up I’d like to see him back with the team.

    • Zack says:

      1. Thats why Johnny gets days off when the team has a 9 game lead in September, so I dont want to hear other people bitching next time hes not playing.

      2. In Damon’s defense, hes been on the DL once in his career- and thats because he crashed into the wall. He’s always beat up a little, but if given the proper days off/DH he can stay healthy. And really a 1 year + option is being cautious, its not another 3yr/45m contract hes going to get.

      • Steve H says:

        Very well said.

      • Jeffrey says:

I’m not complaining Damon isn’t playing. In fact when I first saw the lineup I assumed it was a scheduled off day for him. Damon always plays hard and gets hurt very little Its probably normal wear and tear given his age. I was just stating that we don’t need nagging injuries to become something more serious. I think a 1 year contract with a team option is perfect.

  18. UPDATE, 7:50 p.m.: First pitch at 8:20 p.m.

    Woo!

  19. Trying again:

    start time 8.20

  20. VO says:

WOW I really liked that commercial. Does anyone know the song?

  21. Mike Axisa says:

Mark Sanchez was just in a Toyota commercial with Eli Manning.

  22. BigBlueAL says:

My Yankees Top 10 (like it really matters):

    1. Ruth
    2. Gehrig
    3. Mantle
    4. Joe D
    5. Berra
    6. Jeter
    7. Ford
    8. Dickey
    9. Mo
    10. Many candidates (Bernie, Henrich, Munson, Mattingly and a few SP’s like Guidry, Gomez, Ruffing)

I think the Top 4 are on a different planet from the rest of the list though.

  23. Dela G says:

good to see the pregame show on point

  24. Steve H says:

What does everyone think while discussing the top 10 lore, Bernie or Donnie?

I go Bernie. I think sometimes, because of his last few years, we forget just how great (and feared) a baseball player Bernie was.

    • I’d probably go Bernie as well. Almost identical numbers, but Bernie did it from centerfield and did it for longer.

    • BigBlueAL says:

I think probably Bernie for his longevity and the rings, but Mattingly, even with his last 6 seasons, his career OPS+ was 127 which is slightly better than Bernie at 125.

      • Steve H says:

It’s funny, without looking it up I’d think Donnie had a better peak but crashed early due to injuries, but then when you look it up, it’s not really the case.

Donnie’s best 6 year stretch he had a 147 OPS+, Bernie’s was 146+, so their peaks were (by one stat) were almost identical. Stretch it to a 10 year “peak” and Bernie’s OPS+ is 137, DB(HOF) is 132. When you throw in the GG CF defense, I think the edge goes to Bernie as a player. When it comes to ranking them as Yankees, I certainly think the rings push him well above Donnie.

        • You could also argue that Bernie’s OPS+ during the mid-late 90′s and early 21st century (when he posted at least a .900 OPS from ’96-’02) was skewed by the offense of the times and the “steroid era.”

          • Steve H says:

At the same time you could argue that if he was clean, his OPS+ was in fact lower than it should have been due to the “steroid era.” If guys like A-Rod/Giambi/Tejada/Palmeiro etc. weren’t putting up juiced huge OPS numbers, the average would have been lower, thereby increasing Bernie’s OPS+. That is assuming Bernie was clean, which while I don’t assume anyone is clean, Bernie would be near the absolute bottom of suspects.

  25. Peedlum says:

Please let Jeter’s record breaking hit be a fly ball turned into a home run by a young boy that sticks his glove over the wall.

  26. JSquared says:

    Bases Loaded for Tampa? Sweet.

  27. Dela G says:

Hey they are wearing the red hats tonight!

this has to be good karma since they are 2-0 on red hat day if i am not mistaken

  28. BigBlueAL says:

Hope Minka Kelly is at the game and will be jumping up and down celebrating Jeter’s record….

  29. Mike Axisa says:

Cole Hamels just abused Nick Evans. He was so far out in front of that change he could have swung twice.

  30. Dela G says:

i really hope he can be Mr. November again this year

  31. Mike Axisa says:

Three players have at least 20 homers every year of this decade. Who are they?

    Aaaaaaand go!

  32. AndrewYF says:

All due respect, but that was one of the worst first pitches I’ve seen.

  33. BigBlueAL says:

MJ HOF speech about to begin.

  34. Dela G says:

lets hope the defense holds up for pettitte in the rain soaked ground and stuff

  35. BigBlueAL says:

WOW looks pretty ugly still weather wise.

  36. JSquared says:

Derek has to be a lock for the gold glove by now….

  37. Dela G says:

    good start for andy there

  38. BigBlueAL says:

WOW MJ real emotional. He is crying like I did after the 93 Knicks-Bulls series.

  39. There is no way they’re finishing this game. Jeter’s might have to get #2,722 twice.

  40. Dela G says:

    great first inning

  41. How many times do I have to see this throat cancer commercial?

  42. Michael…please just shut up while this at bat goes on. Please. Just let the crowd noise and the sounds of the game dominate this at bat rather than your stupid ramblings that no one wants to hear but you.

  43. Mike Axisa says:

Michael Kay is literally never going to shut up.

  44. Cy Farnsworth says:

How many times over the past week do you think that Michael Kay’s mentioned that Jeter’s first hit was off of Tim Belcher?

  45. Hey guys did you know Jeter got his first hit off of Tim Belcher? I sure didn’t.

  46. Dela G says:

    ugh kay

    shut the hell up

  47. Cy Farnsworth says:

“making the ballpark look like a circular version of the rockefeller center christmas tree”

at least it’s not a circular mt. olympus

  48. Dela G says:

damn, that was a FILTHY breaking ball

  49. VO says:

Jeter just wants to make sure they are playing the whole game first.

  50. Zack says:

wow the weather is crap out there, one of those games that Hairston-Pena-Hinske should all be starting

  51. Mike Axisa says:

3-1 fastball right down the middle and Tex swang through it. Wheeee….

  52. Dela G says:

    ABOMB FROM AAAAA ROD!!!

  53. Wow, I thought that was going upper-deck for a second.

Now, everyone swing and miss through everything to get five innings done.

  54. PinstripesForeverDougie says:

Damn you stat padder!! Good job Al :)

  55. Josh K says:

    A-Bomb….who-hooooooo!

  56. Eirias says:

    I like this A-Rod character.

  57. JMK says:

This game just might work out in our favor…

    • Johan Iz My Brohan says:

That, and in Boston, Lester is on the mound, got the bases loaded… then the rain delay happened… so he might not be pitching more than 24 pitches tonight.

    • PinstripesForeverDougie says:

that awful team in black and orange we are facing tonight, helps A LOT though ;)

      • JMK says:

Only if we play them in a game of baseball. Half of their bullpen are guys 6’9 or taller, so we best not play them in a game of basketball. They’d have our number (except for Brackman, who is on the 40-man).

  58. PinstripesForeverDougie says:

Here’s hoping he gets to the big 30.

  59. OmgZombies! says:

Typical scumbag Arod. Trying to steal Jeters shine

  60. JMK says:

Bryce Harper could hit the 2nd deck in left!

  61. BigBlueAL says:

I LOVE it!!! MJ just thanked Riley, Starks, Oakley, Ewing and Jeff Van Gundy in his speech!!! Actually wait he was really mocking them, fuck u MJ!!!!

    • PinstripesForeverDougie says:

      Hey BigBlueAl,

The long suffering Knicks Universe has at least this moment to remember fondly against his airness….

  62. Andy In Sunny Daytona says:

Damn! I was watching the Michael Jordan Appreciation Speech to himself. (I suppose he does deserve it)

  63. .968 OPS for A-Rod since Florida. Suck it, Olney.

  64. E-ROC says:

“There is no ‘I’ in team, but there is an ‘I’ in win.”

-Michael Jordan in his HOF speech.

    CLASSIC!

  65. Dela G says:

    Michael Jordan’s Speech was epic

  66. Dela G says:

wow that had me skurred for a sec

  67. That drifted quite a bit.

  68. JMK says:

I’m sorry, but the red hats look stupid. And I have one of them!

    /looks stupid right now

    • Steve H says:

But the red hat helps put money in Jeffrey Loria’s fat wallet. That should make you feel much better about wearing it.

  69. You know what one of my favorite moments of Yankee awesomeness this year is? The pathetic look of defeat on Mora’s face after Swisher caught that ball in the RF corner in Camden.

  70. Dela G says:

how are there no drains in that area?

  71. Andy missed his spot pretty badly on that one.

  72. Andy In Sunny Daytona says:

    Melky would have had that.

    /Trying to make Axisa’s head explode’d

  73. Dela G says:

i always laugh at how their GM is Andy McPhail… They can’t get a McWin?

  74. JMK says:

Whistle night? Are they flying Bubb Rubb out here for the occasion?

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Nnzw_i4YmKk

    The whistles go woop wooo!

  75. Dela G says:

    is tillman really tall?

holy cow he jumped really high and got that

  76. Nice play by Mora. That dude seriously never looks happy, though.

  77. I still don’t get why the big black guy in the IO ad is glad he’s pink.

  78. No, I don’t think Jeter will get 4,000 hits.

  79. Dela G says:

    JETERIAN!!!

    HE DOES IT!

  80. Cy Farnsworth says:

    fist pump!

  81. JMK says:

Now that he’s finally gotten the hit, we don’t have to talk about this again until he’s near 3,000, right? I’m so tired of hearing about this. Let it be done with.

    • Steve H says:

Every hit he gets sets a new Yankee record though. We’re going to have to hear it for the rest of his hits, forever.

  82. Johan Iz My Brohan says:

    YESSSS!!!!

  83. mustang says:

    Shout out to jsbrendog

I think you were right, this means a little more today. I hope your enjoying the moment.

  84. Dela G says:

damn minka kelly is hot hot hot

  85. Mike Axisa says:

    That was awesome, congrats Jetes.

    Minka looks yummy.

  86. Evan says:

    *stands and applauds*

  87. Cy Farnsworth says:

i’d be a little pissed if i was the o’s. this reminds me of when the jets lost a game to the raiders because of an impromptu on field ceremony for tim brown.

also, this moment needs more minka kelly.

  88. Dorian says:

    MINKA MINKA MINKA MINKA

  89. MikeD says:

Too bad Yankee fans in the future will have to look back wondering: What the hell? The Yankees wore red hats??????

  90. mustang says:

    Your watching a legend folks.

  91. BigBlueAL says:

Its a good thing Keith Hernandez wasnt playing 1B for Jeter’s last 2 hits!!

  92. Zack says:

2 1/2 minute standing ovation for Derek

and a 10 minute Kay monolog

  93. Josh K says:

    Min-ka Kel-ly…*clap**clap**clap**clap**clap*

  94. Wow. Tillman’s breaking ball is fucking N A S T Y.

  95. BigBlueAL says:

Damn Swisher with the loud FUCK after that K.

  96. Cy Farnsworth says:

haha don’t be too upset swish, not all of us can be jeterian

  97. Dela G says:

    that curveball IS SICK!!

  98. Joey H says:

For all you kids watching this, cherish this. I plan on telling my kids some day that I saw Derek Jeter play. Unless I’m sterile of course.

  99. LivefromNewYork says:

Jeterian should be a new baby name.

  100. Dela G says:

    holy cow

that curveball will be dynamite for many many years

  101. Tillman’s curveball is really bringing teh pwn.
