but then why would someone with similar numbers to the other guy get to play everyday? think about it that way! also Gardner is a better defensive CF and when he gets on base he can steal. so that is advantage Gardner. i am not saying melky should never play, but his playing time does need to be cut down, and maybe this will light a fire under him and he will turn it up a bit. i have been and will continue to give melky chances, but i think now its time to see what brett can do full time since no one knows what will happen.

It’s a judgment call. Last night they made the call that the Sox had no interest in making an attempt to throw-out Guzman, they allowed him to take the base. The Yankees surely would have made an attempt to throw out Mike Lowell, in a 0-0 game, he just got a good jump and was lucky enough to have chosen a good pitch to run on. I have no problem at all with that scoring decision.
I didnt have a problem with it, i just dont understand the rule.
The rule is: Use your judgment.
Based on the play on the field and the context (players involved, score, inning, etc.), it is in the official scorer’s discretion to decide that the defending team had no interest in throwing out the baserunner, and thus the base was not “stolen” but was taken thanks to “defensive indifference.” For example, if Rickey Henderson is on first base with his team losing 20-0 and the infield plays back and he leisurely strolls down to second base without so much as a flinch from the catcher and middle infielders, it’s safe to assume he took the base due to defensive indifference.
