GCL Yanks see season come to an abrupt end

By

Shelley Duncan was named MVP of the Triple-A International League, while Austin Jackson took home Rookie of the Year honors. Kevin Russo was named the second baseman on the postseason All Star Team. Congrats to all three guys, it’s well deserved.

Lane Meyer at NoMaas checked in with Slade Heathcott, who said he’s not playing because the Yanks want to take it slow with him. This is nothing knew, the Yanks do this with their top guys every year, and in fact I’m surprised JR Murphy has gotten into as many games as he has. Arodys Vizcaino, meanwhile, was placed on the 7-day DL. I’m sure the team is just being careful with his back issue.

And last but certainly not least, it turns out that Dellin Betances did not have Tommy John surgery. He just had a “ligament reinforcement” procedure, which is the same thing Mariano Rivera had back in the day. It’s still a major surgery, but not as severe as TJ.

  1. Accent Shallow says:

So, Dellin is going to be unhittable robo-closer for the next 15 years, starting in 2012? I can live with that.

    • Reggie C. says:

      Heh.

We’ve seen Betances be a dominant starter over a half season in 2008 , so it’d be way premature to end his career as a starter. Disappointment aside , this “reinforcement” surgery is good news.

Lets just hope he doesnt need TJS later on … Betances can’t afford to miss a whole season at this point and still be considered a serious prospect.

      • JMK says:

I’m just worried his stuff won’t be what it was pre-surgery. He already needs work on his control and mechanics (like most, if not all minor leaguers), so that could be a huge setback to his development. Fingers crossed.

        • whozat says:

He’s what, 19? 20? Yeah, it’ll set him back. But, people who were counting on a kid that tall and raw getting to the bigs by 23 were being optimistic. If it takes til he’s 25, I’m still not really disappointed by that.

Next year is kinda make-or-break for Brackman, tho.

          • Jake H says:

Dellin is 21. I think the Yanks have a time table of 24-26 with him getting to the bigs. Mostly because of the injury problems he has had along with the fact that he is a big guy. But he spent 21 in High A if he had been healthy he could have gotten to the bigs by age 23.

            • whozat says:

Coulda. But probably was never going to. I’m just saying that a kid with as many moving parts as him was unlikely to be a fast mover.

          • Reggie C. says:

Betances is actually 21. I think we’ll know if he’s ML material by start of 2012 when he’s hopefully in AAA.

At this point, Betances and Brackman simply do not belong in a conversation in which we project future ML starters. McAllister, Nova, and hopefully IPK lead that discussion. New signee Adam Warren has a better shot at the majors than either Betances or Brackman.

            • whozat says:

So, he’s got next year to rehab from surgery, and then you expect him to pitch so well in his first year back that he gets through High-A and AA and starts 2012 in AAA?

              • Reggie C. says:

Its a whole season of recovery? How exactly then is this surgery any better than TJS?

                • whozat says:

I figure it’s better because they didn’t have to replace the ligament. TJ usually puts guys completely out for a year, I figure this will mean that he starts pitching again late next season but won’t actually make much progress.

                • JMK says:

Yeah, see my comment below. Rivera was able to pitch early the next year and he had the surgery in late August. Of course, Mo is on a different level than Betances, being a deity and all.

      • emac2 says:

“Betances can’t afford to miss a whole season at this point and still be considered a serious prospect”

Does this come directly out of your butt or are you quoting someone?

  2. Johan Iz My Brohan says:

Is Jose Pirela’s ‘lack of power’ something to worry about, or is it because he is only 19 in Low-A? He’s been phenomenal all year, but I noticed he only has 26 extra base hits in 380 AB.

    • gxpanos says:

Ouch. I know power’s the last tool to come…but I doubt he ever has much pop. The scouting reports and the stats are both damning.

    • Jake H says:

He is batting leadoff so his approach might be more of getting on base. But just so you know last year Austin Romine had 35 extra base hits in 436 plate appearances. I wouldn’t be too concerned right now.

Remember that players change swings at times. Look at what Ben Z did this year compared to his career. He changed his whole swing. Before last year at the MLB level he had 280 ab with 13 extra base hits. He also was 25 and 26 so he was physically more mature.

    • Reggie C. says:

Eehh… Pirela actually has a clue of what to do at the plate and i’m sure he’s waaaaay above league average in OBP. I like his approach, and you’d think he’d get stronger. Not sure if i’ve read anything about his defensive skills or speed on the basepaths. He’s not setting error records so no news is kinda good news in that respect.

      Pirela’s definitely a sleeper for 2010.

  3. Arman Tamzarian says:

How does that effect time frame for return?

    • JMK says:

How does what affect the time frame for whose return?

      • whozat says:

        I assumed Betances.

        • JMK says:

Yeah, I figured that, but it might have also been Vizcaino. It’s unclear, so it could even be Heathcott.

Regarding Betances, it’s either the ulnar collateral ligament or the annular ligament of radius–both are essentially elbow surgery, and that could always be very serious. Rivera had the procedure around this time in 1992 and was able to resume pitching again in early ’93. That certainly gives some hope. I think Phil Humber of the Mets had the surgery as well, and was able to throw again the following year.

  4. Chris says:

Do you have any more details on the procedure that Betances got? How long is he expected to be out?

  5. gxpanos says:

Where’s TSJC? The Era of the Fat Sanchezes is coming closer…

  6. zs190 says:

Romulo Sanchez is an interesting guy. We got him for one of our AAA depth guys I think. Huge guy who throws really hard (heard he routinely gets up to 97-99 and can easily sit in the mid 90′s). He’s getting some groundballs and also shown some stamina with some spot starts. Could he be a guy that would help the big league team at some point?

    • whozat says:

Depends on what your expectations are. Could he do a Jose Veras, go up and down for a bit and then put together a stretch where things all go right at the same time before the wheels come off?

Odds of that seem pretty good. Odds that he becomes something better…I figure it all depends on his command. It always comes down to that.

    • Camilo Gerardo - your inception? fuck perception, go with what makes sense says:

3wp, 2bb and 1hb; wildly effective or effectively wild?

  7. Jake H says:

A-Jax is upset that the Yanks didn’t promote him so he took it out on the opponent.

Mike A had the remainder of his interview with Damon on his site. Good read.

  8. daneptizl says:

Gardner’s got a surprising piece of that pie.

  9. A.D. says:

Any chance of Russo moving to LF for a chance to play in the near future?

    • whozat says:

What makes you think he’d be a league-average player in LF?

      • A.D. says:

He probably wouldn’t be, but if he can put up any type of OBP like this year, than he can be a solid 2 hole hitter, and given the Yankees premium offense at other positions, lack of outfield depth, and upcoming FA at LF, seems like a potential fit.

Worse case hes a Jerry Hariston type.

        • whozat says:

This is the first time he’s put up that kind of OBP. He’s never played LF before. His defense at other positions is meh.

Best case he’s Jerry Hairston Jr. Guys that become solid MLB regulars have better track records than Russo. If he becomes a good UT guy, we should be ecstatic.

Romulo Sanchez has now made 12 starts and has a better ERA as a starter this season in AAA. Are they planning on just keeping him as a starter going into next year?
