He was the best 1B of all time, and did it with class and aplomb. The man’s reputation isn’t going anywhere.

Indeed. Gehrig’s 162-game average was 37 HR, 149 RBI, and .340 BA.

This at a time when HR’s were hit at 1/3 to 1/2 of today’s rate.

OPS+ doesn’t really do it justice.

Gehrig didn’t just destroy the competition in his time, he put up stats that would make him one of the game’s most dangerous hitters today. He averaged a 1.080 OPS and 149 RBI! Why would anyone forget him? That’s like saying people might forget about Walter Johnson or Honus Wagner.
