Open Thread: New radio voices
ByUpdate (7:31pm): T-Kep tweets that Ian Kennedy might be called up soon. That would be cool.
It’s not major news, but it’s news nonetheless. Suzyn Waldman won’t be around calling games during the Seattle series, instead she’ll be off celebrating Rosh Hashannah. Apparently it takes two people to replace her, as WFAN’s Sweeny Murti inherits pre- and post-game duties while Kim Jones takes over during games. Don’t worry, Suzy will be back in time for the Anaheim series.
Elsewhere, longtime Yankee farmhand and RAB’s 2008 Minor League Lifetime Achievement Award winner Matt Carson has been called up by the A’s and is in the lineup tonight. A big congrats goes out to Matt, I wish him nothing but the best.
Anyway, use this as your open thread until gametime later tonight. The Mets are playing the Nats in a battle of teams going nowhere, and if you’re into hockey the Rangers are taking on the Red Wings in preseason action. You can also come chill with me at MLBTR. Other than that, anything goes until the game starts, just be nice.

Sterling really wants to do these games alone.
I could see him doing dialogue with himself.
When I read the first part of the second sentence I got all excited, I thought it was going to say she was leaving for good!
+1
does kim jones sound as good as she looks? that’s the question!
I don’t understand the love on Jones. I mean, the body looks to be alright but that face, pass.
Hey! Kim Jones is a handsome woman.
There’s just no accounting for taste . . . is there?
She really is quite breathtaking.
Agreed completely.
I wonder if she reads this? (RAB is a YES blog like hers…)
10 o’clock games suck.
especially after off days. the wait only feels longer.
Shana Tova! Party like it’s 5770!
AH-HAHAHAHAHA!!!
happy new year to you
Happy Hew Year, Rebecca!
Mike to end the chat: “The Yanks will probably clinch a playoff spot at some point.”
Way to go out on a limb, Mike.
On a serious note, do the Yanks celebrate when they clinch a playoff spot or when they clinch the decision or when they clinch home-field advantage?
I say party all 3 times!
I said “Have a good weekend, the Yanks will probably clinch a playoff spot at some point.” I thought it was implied that I meant they could clinch this weekend.
Oh, makes sense now that I think about it.
“Oh, makes sense now that I
think about itdidn’t take selectively take part of the quote out of context so as to change its meaning.”(fixed)
(I keed, I keed.)
heh, I guess I could be accused of that but I only did that because I thought it didnt imply that soon means weekend, which makes sense now.
Um… Not that it matters or anything… But the word “soon” wasn’t in Mike’s quote. Not sure where you got that explanation from.
Sorry my bad, I meant “some point.” Dont know why I said soon.
No worries, we all get caught in a lie at some point. (kidding)
Is it possible for us to clinch it today?
I think I hate Suzyn Waldman more than anybody I’ve never met (non-dictator). If I can’t watch the game because I’m in the car, it really is a hard decide whether or not to listen to the game. She, and John Sterling to a lesser extent, is an embarrassment to the Yankees. The quality of their broadcasters does not match the quality of the rest of the organization and it’s really unfortunate.
Awesome news about IPK. I want to see him action, even for only a bit.
hopefully he does a little better than allowing nearly a run per inning this time around. he could be a useful 5th starter for the yankees in the future. very cost effective as well.
Woah, you are being positive about a young starter that initially failed?
im not optimistic about it. just hopeful. there is a difference.
No one said that. JW said you were positive and you are if you’re hopeful.
Hopeful is a synonym of optimistic. But meh…
let me rephrase. i think he has a low probability of being good. but i wish that he could be.
Little probably is still being positive.
*probability
Oh well. Baby steps I guess.
With Edwin Jackson falling off a cliff and the Twins on the verge of a playoff spot who would you guys rather see in the playoffs?
They’re actually pretty identical stat wise.
The Twins. Weaker rotation and no Morneau.
Yeah, Mauer shouldn’t get a damn thing to hit the rest of the year. Jason Kubel is having a very good year, but I’ll take my chances with him.
Yea and he cant hit lefties at all.
.995 OPS against RHP
.674 OPS against LHP
Yeah but we only have 1 lefty starter, so it doesnt really matter.
nick swisher starts game 2.
Andy Pettite says hello
ah yeah him too
True but he’ll stink against our pen and also like Mike said, I’ll take my chances with him.
.674 OPS vs. LHP.
the m&m boys always seem to kill the yankees. but the pitching of the twins doesn’t really scare me. verlander is always a scary threat.
I bet that Morneau doesn’t get a hit against the Yankees in the playoffs.
why do you say that?
Morneau is out for the season
Because he’s out for the season with a stress fracture in his back.
He’s done for the season.
Haha, IETC.
The M&M boys will kill anyone really. But Morneau is done for the season and it’s true they have a weaker rotation.
Verlander’s just one guy and of course he’s great but if Jackson doesn’t get it together they are screwed.
Both offenses are kinda sucky but at first glance I give it to the Twins by a really small margin.
arent a lot of the twins averages a little inflated because of the metrodome. i feel like that makes there offense look better than it is.
Yeah, but the tigers are not impressive outside of Miguel Cabrera.
.788 OPS Home
.741 OPS Away
Just a 40 point difference. Almost near Boston away. That kind of tells something about their offense away. The thrive at home.
It’s because they have a lot of shitty little speed guys that slap the ball on the turf and have it skip through the hole.
I was talking about Boston about thriving at home.
So are those stats for Boston, or the Twins?
Boston thrives at home because the park is like one of those novelty stadiums in Backyard Baseball with all those weird corners and little nooks and crannys.
i think he was saying those are for the twins
The Twins. Then I said they are almost on par with Boston on the road and it tells how bad Boston can be on the road.
But my bad for making that unclear.
m&m boys???
awwww…you 96ers are so cute.
what is a 96er.
96er is a joke term for a younger fan…Fans of the 1996 Yankees and beyond.
folks that didn’t see mantle play basically.
Meh I was born in 94…
I’m 22 and I feel really old right now.
’95, old fart.
IPK did good for Triple-A the other night, a little 2 inning relief appearance might be nice to see from him.
If IPK gets called up for this season, I’ll be super duper pumped.
me too.
SWEET TWEET FROM THE T-CUP!
Damn, I’d love to see him get a start in the final week of the season, after we clinch. That would be a great story, considering the year he’s had.
Kim Jones – the quintessential scripted reporter. Hurry back, Waldman.
Personally I don’t like dat “Who the you rather the yanks play or not” The way the yanks have played this season, Does it really matter?
This.
Co-sign. The Yanks just need to take care of their own business. If they do that, the opponent won’t matter./
so i heard the yankees clinch a playoff spot after 3 game outcomes. why does this website say 10?
It’s for the division.
so we could be a lock for the playoffs tomorrow.
Exactly.
do you remember the yankees ever having some player manage on the last day of the season because the playoffs are a lock at that point? i feel like one year they had someone do it and mariano rivera was the pitching coach, and i think jeter was the bench coach. maybe it was posada. was that only a joe torre thing.
Torre did that almost every year. Posada managed one year, Ruben Sierra another. Moose was the pitching coach once, then it was Mo. All sorts of stuff.
i hope they bring that back. i always thought it was a fun time and good chemistry builder right before the playoffs.
Wait, I’m a little confused maybe you can clear it up. If the Yankees win today, is it possible that tonight we have a locked playoff spot(mathematically).
i dont know, i just know someone said that there are some outcomes that by tommorrow night we would be a lock. i dont think it can happen by the end of tonight.
I don’t think so, I thought the magic number to clinch a playoff spot was 3 going into today.
“by tommorrow night we would be a lock. i dont think it can happen by the end of tonight”
Clearly my comment was meant as a response to VO.
No, tomorrow. The magic number is 3 games right? So if the Yanks win and Texas loses then it goes down to 1 game then tomorrow there is a chance to clinch the playoffs.
OK, makes sense. Thanks.
Let’s hope the red sox can lose 10 in a row….
Their pitching is rounding into form nicely right at exactly the right time. Beckett’s coming off two good starts in a row, Lester is always tough and even Dice K looked good the other night. I’m beginning to get worried about them again.
So, what do you guys think the next ‘saber-stat’ to hit the mainstream will be? This year it was OPS, I think next year it’s gonna be FIP. I would say UZR, but I think the MSM has an aversion to fielding metrics–even though Buck Showalter said earlier on BBTN this season he wishes there was a “runs saved” stat for nice plays but I’m sure he’d be really against any fielding stat that exactly states how many runs a player saves with his glove…Anyway, I’m gonna go out on a limb and say FIP.
mainstream? i avoid all of those like the plague. i still think it is a very selective group of people that use them. i honestly dont even know exactly what all those even are. it wont be mainstream because some of them you need a PhD in math to be able understand what is going on.
alex gonzalez rolls with Murray Chass.
alex gonzalez rolls with
Murray ChassBuzz Bissinger.http://deadspin.com/385770/bissinger-vs-leitch
It really pisses the shit out of him.
“Big Daddy Balls” always killed me.
I’ve heard Gammons refer to “defense independent pitching statistics,” not necessarily FIP, but the same idea. I think that’s next, because it makes a lot of sense. Judge a pitcher based on what he’s done, not on what his teammates affected.
Yeah, for all the crap we give him (much of it deserved) he does try to stay up on the new metrics here and there, which is more than you can say for most writers, especially the ones his age.
Word. We’re still a long way off from tRA (the real tRA) but FIP seems logical.
Also, for the record, you don’t need a math degree to understand advanced stats. I got a D in Statistics 101 @ UConn and I understand advanced stats.
How awesome would it be if Gammons started using tRA? I would love to see people’s responses to that.
That would be incredibly cool. As The Artist said above, Gammons does at least try to stay up on the new stuff, so he could be the one to bring something like tRA (or hopefully UZR) into the fold.
A-rod for the month of September…
.396/.458/.585/1.043
dayum
Your facts mean nothing to me because my eyes tell me he’s Mr. April.
Steep Decline…
He’s looks like a first baseman.
can he carry that into october when it matters? and not just put up good numbers against september kids.
I was going to list all the pitchers that he has faced this month, but it’s not even worth it.
I’ve just declared war on you guys, hope you like it.
http://www.theyankeeuniverse.com/?p=7563
I asked you once before if you were Steve S. at The Yankee Universe and you said very emphatically that you were not. I am confused.
I am not Steve S, I am Luxembourg.
I just assumed he was. His name used to be the artist formerly known as steve and he was linked to TYU
At once wasn’t his name plain old steve?
Yeah, that was before the mid-life crisis.
That, and there was literally about 6 Steve’s here at the time.
I am even more confused than when I asked the first question. That’s okay – I’ll learn to live with it.
He is Steve S.
Thank you. Did I just miss some sarcasm in the answers?
Jer-ry! Jer-ry! Jer-ry!
Apparently someone wasn’t kidding about being pissed about RAB not using his choice for #10.
Lol. Mondesi fucking cracks me up.
Is “fucking” a verb or and adverb here?
Because…
IETC.
You, Doug. You are now on the list.
Haha, nice.
“Mondesi fucking
cracks me upis a site to behold.”(fixed, and TWSS)
Damn, this orioles sidelines reporter is very hot
What is her name?
dude i have no idea
she’s the MASN reporter
is it Amber Theoharis? Here’s her photo:

Maybe she looks more like this:

Gets around.
I’m watching the BoSox/O’s game on NESN but Heidi Watney isn’t bad either:

Sleeps with Captain America.
nope, now with Nick Green apparently
Seriously?
Yea, according to the Boston Herald.
Yep – Apparently Varitek was seeing her before he got divorced.
I thought he cheated on his wife with Hazel Mae then cheated on her with Heidi Watney.
I guess that’s possible. I hadn’t heard that.
I could be wrong.
Thats what I heard too
That’s OK, we’ve got our own local sports babes here in NY

Rrrrrowl!!

Nice. But I’m look for a little more of the Silver Fox look.

Anybody saw the article in the Daily News comparing this yankee team to the 98 team?
What caught my attention in that article was that Chad Curtis actually was the yankee starting LFer in 98.
Yeah I remember LF being an interesting spot for the Yanks for a while back then. It stayed that way until Matsui came to town, really.
How about Hideki Irabu as the #5 starter?
Actually, that rotation was very solid, but didn’t have one lock down Ace in it. Cone was very good, Wells had a career year, El Duque was solid and Andy was very good. But no Randy Johnson/Pedro/Clemens in his prime type pitcher.
Buccholz throwing another gem.
3 BB, 1 K
against the O’s without Adam Jones
and Reimold
Well, to be fair, with Adam Jones, he’d probably have at least one more strikeout.
Buchholz has impressed me a lot this year.
I keep thinking that I still have to do DotF tonight. I don’t know what to do with all this free time.
I don’t know what to do with all this free time.
http://www.snapbubbles.com/
Hahah!
Great idea but not as satisfying as the real thing.
IPK?
You mean the guy with the 88 MPH fastball?
Please, what a joke.
I’m surprised alex gonzalez isn’t a bigger fan, after all IPK’s career minor league record is 19-6. The guy does win games.
19? That’s all? Ha! Mike do you know what era this is?
Any other Moneen fans out there? I’m listening to the new stuff on MySpace and I’m liking it.
I just Youtube’d some of their stuff. I kind of like it. What bands do you like Matt?
To be honest, I’ve been very out of the loop finding new music for the last like…2 years, haha. It’s kinda shitty. But I’ve followed Moneen for ~5 years (I saw them open for My Chemical Romance, Midtown, and Reggie and the Full Effect back in ’03) and I heard they had a new album coming out so I thought I’d give it a listen. Anyway, jams I’ve been kicking lately:
Midtown’s discography (fuck you and Cobra Starship, Gabe)
Based on a True Story by The Starting Line (one of my favorite albums from ’05)
Makers by Rocky Votolato
If You Speak Any Faster by June
Reasons that Keep the Ground Near by Lux Courageous (super underrated brand that broke up a while ago)
Some good bands. If you click my link it will take you to the band Bayside. By far my favorite band. You should check some of their stuff out. I also love the band Boys Night Out. Their album Trainwreck is amazing.
Yeah, I know Bayside. Always fun. I never really got into BNO, though.
I find a lot people don’t know about Bayside. I’m pretty addicted to them. Saw them four times in a span of 8 days and two states last year. Boys Night Out is simply amazing. That’s all I can really say about them. Saosin, Brand New, Silverstein, Chiodos, and etc. also are great.
How is the new BN album? I’ve heard from one person that it’s good and from another that it was crap.
I saw The Starting Line at the Warped Tour a few years ago, didn’t know punk could be that gay.
Randall’s Island ’05? I was there. I was spitting dirt for like three days.
There’s no way it was ’05 when I went. I think it was ’02, maybe ’03. But yeah, Randall’s Island. NOFX and The Bosstones “headlined,” or were at least the final acts.
Ah, okay. I just remember watching TSL during ’05.
Hopefully Allan brings his ‘A’ game tonight, he’ll need it against Felix.
If he doesn’t, you can be sure NoMaas will let you know about, it Pop
Wow, comma placement mega-fail.
:points and laughs at the English major:
…who has a job helping kids learn reading, writing, and grammar skills.
Damn.
Yeah…
You’re the best man to ever walk the earth.
I’m not Nick Swisher.
Nick Swisher jokes > than Chuck Norris jokes
Chuck Norris wears Nick Swisher pajamas.
The only reason there are Chuck Norris jokes is that they amuse Nick Swisher.
Come to think, that’s the only reason ANYTHING exists.
Nick Swisher accounts for roughly 90% of all the penis on the Earth.
Haha, that’s a good one.
Yoda is based on Nick Swisher.
Does your contract with YES require you to pretend we might conceivably miss Waldman, rather than celebrate her absence?
