using woodward and bernstein as a model of investigative journalism is sad.... they were led around by a bitter FBI employee. People use that as an example, but if you look at the facts, it's more like deep throat found them than the other way around.

Based on this comment, Lanny, it's quite clear that you have no idea what you're talking about. To claim that blogs and people on Twitter don't do any reporting or "steal content" is simply ignorant.

What blogs and twitter and other things dont do is any reporting. Blogs just link/steal content. Throw their 2 cents in on it. But they dont do any work for it. They dont pay for it. Another company does. It costs money to do proper reporting. And not charging for content is killing them right now. Why are they giving away everything for free? Its pointless.

That may be true, but investigative work is almost always a lengthy, costly process. How will it be funded? IJ is usually one of the first parts to be cut from a publication for the reasons already listed, and I'm not sure that the model (or lack thereof, more accurately) of blogging enables the capital for IJ to be a long-term solution. Perhaps something will come of it in the future; I could see a scenario in which reporters follow their own stories, do investigative work, and charge advertising on their blogs. Still, not many reporters could sustain that sort of risk.

Maybe blogging and the news being "free" (economists hate free lunch) will likely weed out some beat reporters, but I doubt the papers or whoever is funding these happenings will put the money back into investigative journalism. I hope I'm wrong.
