again….no one is asking pena or guzman to hit in the postseason…neither one of them will.

so what we are talking about is speed…base stealing…and if its between pena and guzman to steal a big base.

i want guzman.

I was at the SI Yanks game last night. Warren dominated, but threw most of his FBs in the 90-92 range with average secondary stuff. Nothing jumped out at me. The moment of the night was Almonte’s HR in the 8th that hit high off the batting eye in CF. Had it been at the OLD Yankee stadium it would have been in the black. What a shot!!!

I wouldn’t worry about losing the DH, they’re not going to have one in the World Series half the time anyway.

Pena is one of the faster guys on this team even if he isn’t known for stealing bases.

At this point I don’t see Gardner starting in CF during the playoffs. Cabrera has been the everyday CF and will continue to be. Melky also has the better arm and that could mean the difference on a number of plays. Plus, Gardner is more valuable as a pinch runner or late inning defensive replacement.

There’s a reason Guzman has been with 4 different AAA squads in 2009. That’s cause he can’t hit.

I’m hoping this team doesn’t have to play too much small ball in the playoffs.

well…you know for fact that you’re going to have to pinch run for matsui if he gets on late and maybe posada aswell..and if Girardi decided to start gardner…you’re looking at PR either Hairy or Melky..and if you PR hairy for matsui..and then lose a IFer..you lose the DH.

i just think having an extra pinch runner could give Girardi a few more options to play with because pena probably ain’t going to see the field anyway…plus he is not a base stealer

what were the odds that Claggett lasted the winter on the 40 man?

When exactly will that versatility come into play? Pena will not be coming in for any of the infielders under any circumstances. Whoever that last guy is will almost certainly be used exclusively to run. Guzman is a better choice.

Pena only has value on defense if he is ACTUALLY PLAYING. and that means he is playing in place of A-Rod, Cano, or Jeter.

which has almost no chance of happening.

if it does, it means someone got hurt.

in that case, Hairston covers that.

if TWO of those 3 IFers get hurt, well, it’s probably not going to matter if you took Pena or Guzman.

also, i believe they changed the rules, and if someone gets hurt, you can replace them between games.

so if that doomsday scenario happened, Pena could be added to the roster.
