Staten Island, Tampa roll in playoff openers

By Joseph Pawlikowski

Mike’s out due to technical difficulties. Here’s the rundown of the Florida State League and New York-Penn League playoff games.

High-A Tampa (11-5 win over Brevard County)

Despite scoring 11 runs, Tampa has three runners thrown out at the plate: Damon Sublett twice and Walt Ibarra once.

Dan Brewer: 1 for 4, 1 2B
David Adams: 1 for 4, 1 BB
Austin Romine: 0 for 2, 3 BB — scored all three times
Damon Sublett: 2 for 2, 3 BB
Brandon Laird: 4 for 4, 1 2B, 5 RBI
Kevin Smith: 2 for 4, 1 BB
Luis Nunez: 1 for 5
Jack Rye: 2 for 4, 1 HR — only homer in the 11-run onslaught
Walt Ibarra: 1 for 3
David Phelps: 5.1 IP, 4 H, 4 R, 4 ER, 1 BB, 4 K — great pitchers pitch to the score…
Phil Bartleski: 0.2 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 2 BB, 1 K
Pat Venditte: 2 IP, 2 H, zeroes
Trenton Lare: 1 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 0 BB, 1 K — meaningless ninth-inning run

Short-Season Staten Island (3-2 win over Lowell)

Jimmy Paredes: 1 for 4
Justin Milo: 0 for 3, 1 K, 1 RBI
DeAngelo Mack: 1 for 4, 1 2B, 1 K
Luke Murton: 0 for 4, 2K, 1 E
Zoilo Almonte: 2 for 4, 1 3B, 1 HR — hit the game-winning homer in the top of the ninth
Kyle Higashioka: 1 for 4, 1 RBI, 1 K, 1 E (throwing)
Mike Lyon: 0 for 4, 2 K
Kelvin Castro: 1 for 2, 2 BB
Carmen Angelini: 0 for 3
Adam Warren: 4.2 IP, 7 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 1 BB, 8 K — must have been on a pitch count
Griffin Bailey: 1.1 IP, 1 H, zeroes
Garth Gavin Brooks: 2 IP, 0 H 0 R, 0 ER, 1 BB, 2 K
Ryan Flannery: 1 IP, zeros, 1 K

Jake H says:

Good wins. Warren had the K going.

Playoffs! How could I forget about the playoffs!!

Reggie C. says:

Damn yo. I’m gonna miss Dotf… Alright.

Pat Venditte better start off next season in AA. The goal may not be about finding him a spot in the notorious AL East, but Venditte has given the Yanks nothing but positive press and positive contribution. Venditte deserves a shot at showcasing his stuff for the rest of baseball. You never know … a team like the Pads or Natinals could use this crafty young man.

p.s., Where does Angellini go from here? Back to Charleston i guess?

Ksturnz says:

i guess, at this point, give him a dead-pull swing to work on in instructionals and have him work out like a motherfucker ;P

JMK says:

Regarding the p.s.-Little League?

In all seriousness, I think you’re right. But another terrible season just might tank his career. I just don’t know how he has failed this much; he supposedly had oodles of talent. What happened?

Salty Buggah says:

Venditte is pretty much ready to pitch in the NL right now. And Im sure Shelley and Eric Duncan would put up monster numbers too.

Shelly yes, Eric Duncan no. That guy is awful. His MLB equivalencies are too bad to print.

Chris says:

His MLB equivalencies are too bad to print.

Yeah, but what are his NL equivalencies?

If we stick Eric Duncan on the Astros, he hits .177/.207/.241. If we put him on the Yankees, he hits .178/.209/.244. He’s a MiLB free agent after this year, and there’s no way the Yanks bring him back.

“Austin Romine: 0 for 2, 3 BB — scored all three times”

Soooo, what you mean is that passing the baton is good?

A.D. says:

but teh batting avg!!!

Drew says:

Venditte, bitches.

I wonder if he starts in Trenton next year. That would be fun to watch.

AndrewYF says:

So, Gavin Brooks. Legitimate relief prospect? Could rocket through the system ala Robertson?

rbizzler says:

I know that Mike thinks so. Brooks was one of his sleepers from this year’s class if he can work out some command issues.

pollo says:

Have you seen Venditte pitch lefty? It’s not pretty. If I were the Yanks I stop the switch pitching BS and make him pitch righty.

Drew says:

Care to elaborate? His K/9 lefty is pretty nasty.

Salty Buggah says:

I honestly think he could probably pitch well in the NL for a bit until he gets figured out.

manimal says:

Dude, hes not even in AA yet. One step at a time. Don’t just banish him to the NL… Atleast without seeing him at the upper levels.

Salty Buggah says:

So, AA>>>NL? Thats a major diss ;)

Drew says:

Next year will be the test.

Salty Buggah says:

Yea, if he does well, I’ll be very very happy.

Chris says:

There are plenty of LOOGYS that drop down and come side arm or submarine.

Top back this up here are his splits:
vs LH: 1.26 WHIP, 1.89 BB/9, 14.21 K/9
vs RH: 1.18 WHIP, 2.41 BB/9, 8.20 K/9

So it looks like they should stop the switch pitching – and only have him pitch lefty!

Bugsy says:

Jose Veras in action right now

Salty Buggah says:

3-run bomb to Chris Davis (all unearned though I think)

Salty Buggah says:

You know whats sad? He had an ERA of 5.96 with the Yanks this year….and he still outperform his FIP by 35 points.

Sleepy Carl says:

You gotta try to not strike out Davis too.
