Hey, look, just like you were all wrong when you all said the Yankees couldn’t possibly come back and win this game, you were also all wrong when you said Damaso Marte was the wrong move. Bobby couldn’t square up the ball. Turning Figgins around and getting a favorable matchup against Bobby was absolutely the right move.
And now, Hughes’ job is easier.
At that point Marte was the right move. AJ starting the inning was the questionable move imo.
I might have lifted him after the first hit, but I absolutely would have let him start the inning.
True, Aybar is a SH so Marte couldve face him too but most likely they wouldve pinch-hit Kendrick.
I think I would’ve preferred Phil Coke over Marte, but I agree going with the lefty vs Chone and Bobby was the correct move.

If it wasn’t for the defined “closers” role, you’d see Mo, against the heart of the lineup with the tying run on. That’s never going to happen in 2009 baseball though.

In fairness to Girardi, Burnett was coming off 5 straight scoreless innings. If the Yankees had just taken a 2-0 lead into the 6th after 5 straight scoreless innings, would we have wanted Burnett pulled? No. We’ve seen before with AJ he can have one terrible inning and then dominate. I would have liked him to come out after the first baserunner, but I can’t kill the decision to have him start the 7th.
