The only thing I can possibly come up with is that Ace is a groundball guy and Kendrick has been hitting the ball in the air.
But that’s all I got and I don’t totally buy it.
On the radio they’re saying that because D-Rob throws fastballs and sliders he can be more predicatable, but Aceves has too many pitchers for a batter to key in on. I don’t necessarily agree with that, but let’s also remember that D-Rob had to miss time with an elbow injury at the end of the year.

The bullpen pitched admirably, but you knew at some point going 0-for-8 with RISP (stat might be more, I’m not sure) was going to hurt this team. Andy still had a solid start, but the ball just wasn’t going the Yankees way tonight. I don’t think anyone should have had the expectation that this team would go 11-0 in the postseason. It’s one game. Remember the Angels series earlier in the season where the Yanks lost the first but won the next two to take the series? This team will rebound and play better.
So let’s all take a deep breath. The Yanks still hold a 2-1 series lead with their ace going tomorrow. Kazmir has pitched well against the Yankees, but I think the Yanks are due for a real break-out game this postseason.

The real issue here is the missed opportunities. We had them all game and that’s what did us in. This idea that Girardi has been hurting the team all year with his over-managing, I think, is a bit over-thought. You don’t win 103 games with a clueless manager. Managing is putting players in the best position to win. Girardi doesn’t play the game, the players do. While I think putting in a guy who pitches more to contact was a poor decision, it does not mean that he is a poor manager.
We’re up 2-1 and have our ace going tomorrow. We need to be more consistent offensively but going 11-0 wasn’t going to happen.

That was the second stupidest move I’ve ever seen (cough Grady Little cough). Aceves was not pitching well, naving allowed a run yesterday. Robertson had been pitching great. He had gotten 2 quick outs. There was a limited history. Both were righthanded. Why switch pitchers?

Last time I checked it was best out of seven, we won our two at home, the Angels won the first of their three. As far as I can tell the pressure is on them. If they lose a single game at home they’ll be under tremendous pressure. We have home field advantage, look at our starters, we have CC twice more, we have AJ. Look at our hitters we have Jeter, Po, Tex and Arod. Look at our pen, we have Joba, Hughes and D-Rob, for Mo’s sake, we have Mo!

Girardi’s tendency to overmanage has been fodder for debate all season, but the decision he made tonight was decried by everyone watching the minute it happened and frankly defies all rational explanation. Robertson just showed everyone that he has the control, poise and “stuff” to get out the Angels biggest offensive threat, and yet he gets pulled for a junkballing long reliever who looked bad in his last appearance only 36 hours ago? Girardi made this decision based, we can only assume, on all of 2 at bats worth of data (which were inconclusive, even if you are willing to discount the small sample size). This is absolutely a fireable offense. There is obviously no guarantee that the Yankees win the game if Robertson isn’t pulled, but Girardi’s move put his team in a worse position without any provocation — if the Angels make a series out of this, the Yankees need to seriously look at bringing in a steady hand to man the bench.

It was a mistake, a dumb move. Aceves pitched great for us at at times this year, maybe Girardi was blinded by loyalty.
If bringing in D-Rob with the bases loaded against the Twins backfired, he’d be castigated for that.

How is a dumb move in the 11th inning of an LCS game NOT a firable offense? This wasn’t an arguable move that just didn’t work out – I agree that those happen, it’s part of the fun of the game – this was a mental error in a pressure moment that was preventable. Were it a player that made this error, the proper decision would be to not put them in that position again. How is it not the same for the manager?
Because we’re winning the series.
Let me rephrase — do you have confidence in Girardi managing late-game situations going forward? Because its not just Girardi making the move that is frightening, its that he actually thinks he was doing the right thing. If he can’t see that ignoring glaringly obvious on-field performance in favor of thinly-supported statistical history is the wrong way to go, then he absolutely needs to be relieved of his duties in the off-season.
I don’t know about a “fireable offense” but there’s no denying that was a bonehead move in a long string of them tonight. He was definitely over-managing, and all it did was get him further and further behind the 8 ball. I can only hope he didn’t tell Gardner to run on that 1-1 pitch when everyone in creation knew a pitchout was coming.
I don’t buy the “it’s only one game” argument. The Angels are absolutely good enough to win 3 of the next 5 and take this series. Heck, they probably should have won Game 2 and actually be ahead in the series right now. Now the already struggling Yankee offense goes up against a pitcher that is a very tough matchup for them (Kazmir) with the Angels best big game pitcher following right behind him (Lackey). Sabbathia and Burnett could shine and still lose both those games, at which point the Yankees are returning to the Bronx in do-or-die mode and this “one game” is looking huge.

meh its how these things go, going up 3-0 would have been nice against a team that we as fans get a little nervous playing, but on the bright side this time we aren’t trying to calm ourselves with “Well if we can get anything out of Mussina we can have Wang go in a must win.”
I mean I watched Randy Johnson pitch an absolute turd against these guys and fall back on “Well hopefully Chacon can do the job” to make myself feel better. Its night and day when Sabathia is waiting for his turn.

1. Girardi’s move was definitely ill-advised and puzzling. He definitely deserves a good share of the blame.
2. Aceves made bad pitches to a bad hitter and he paid for it. He deserves some of the blame too.

As baffling as pulling Robertson was, I’m not particularly thrilled with Pettitte for the bomb to Vlad, or the offense for doing nothing when someone was on base. Or Joba for giving up rockets to shitty hitters.

Considering the Abreu miscue on the bases and the whole getting-out-of-the-inning-with-1st-and-3rd-and-nobody-out thing, to say that the game was doomed on the Vlad HR makes you quite a prognosticator.
My point is, the Yanks had ample opportunities to pull it out after that HR and didn’t take advantage of it.

The weird thing is, watching the replay, when Girardi goes to the binder, he actually doesn’t look at ANYTHING. He just opens to the first page, flips it, and then closes the book. I really think he just “gutted” that decision…unfortunately.
Aceves gave up a seeing eye ground ball single to Kendrick. It’s not like the ball was crushed. A foot to the left or right and that’s an out that ends the inning.

As much as Girardi is to blame you have to put just as much on Swisher for leaving a small village on base with less than 2 outs.

Bulger (I think) also threw a 3-1 curveball to Posada for a strike (taken of course) before the 3-2 curve strikeout which was a ball inside. You gotta admire that confidence in your curve…

The next time any of you question Girardi playing small ball in June, remember this game. Twice we had two on with less than two outs and he let guys swing. 1st and 2nd nobody out in the 4th and the inning goes as follows:
Matsui walk, Posada single, Cano fielder’s choice (Matsui moves to third), Swish K’s (as is his custom), and Melky grounds out to end the inning.
Fast Forward to the Top of the 8th after the Posada homer with 1 out: Cano singles, Swisher walks, Melky K’s (As is his custom), and The Captain grounds out. This game goes on Melky and Swish just as much as Girardi.

Absolutely not. I am a believer in not giving up outs but I don’t think that assuring yourself runs is necessarily the skid mark on the underpants of society either. When runs are presented to you, you take them. In whatever fashion you can get them. Just because something isn’t executed doesn’t make it a bad decision. If Cano gets a bunt down in the 4th, we have another run.
All I am saying is that this is an example of when small ball might be able to help and isn’t the worst thing in the world. Don’t be so narrow minded to think that bunting is awful all the time.
Bunting isnt awful all the time…just most of the time. Swisher simply did not get the job done(just had to get a fly ball). It really sucks, but our team is just not clicking on offense(sans HRs)

The Yankees are lucky, Girardi could have cost them the Saturday night game. There were so many bad decisions in this game that it’s too frightening to review, I like Joe, I was in favor of hiring him but he has to learn he is the biggest thing standing in the way of the Yankees and a trip to the World Series.
