ALDS Game Three Thread: Angels @ Red Sox

By

After scoring just one run and putting only 12 runners on base in the first 18 innings of the series, the Red Sox returned home to Fenway down 0-2 in the best-of-five ALDS to those pesky Angels. Boston posted the second best home record in baseball this year (behind the Yanks, of course), so coming back East could be just what the doctor ordered. Clay Buchholz (7-4, 4.21) will face off with Scott Kazmir (10-9, 4.89), who is certainly no stranger to the Fens. First pitch is scheduled for just after noon ET, TBS will have the broadcast. Feel free to chat about the game here.

  1. Mike Pop says:

Hope the Sox get a W today.

  2. Free Mike Vick says:

LOL @ the red sox having to play at noon.

  3. mustang says:

Red Sox now, Giants at 1pm and the Yanks at 6pm.

    Sport heaven !!!!!

  4. I don’t want to wait for Monday for the Jets!

(#travails of being a Jets fan)

That said, why the hell are they starting this game at noon?

  5. Mike Axisa says:

It’s so funny watching Abreu run. It’s a fat guys actually going pretty fast.

  6. I shouldn’t have enjoyed that but I just did.

  7. Mike bk says:

has it been announced if the Sox win today that they would go with Lester short tomorrow and Beckett for game 5?

  8. Mike Pop says:

Abreu was so sick in his time with the Yanks.

    .295/.378/.465 with a 120 OPS+

    • whozat says:

      That’s not really “sick”

It’s good, yeah. When combined with poor defense, thought, it’s actually not that great.

      • Mike Pop says:

Well yeah, a higher slugging % would have been nice but I’ll take that production anyday considering what Cash gave up for him.

True, his defense was very bad.

        I overreacted.

        • Reggie C. says:

I have mixed feeligs about Abreu. Maybe the whole missing the playoffs last year tainted the departure of certain Yanks, but at least Abreu was consistent at the plate.

Certainly it was unfair to cast Abreu as a slugging partner to Alex , but at least Abreu got on base a ton.

  9. Mike Pop says:

What’s going to be funny is when the articles come out saying the Umpires won this series for the Angels.

  10. Dela G says:

kazmir is a red sox bulldozing machine

  11. Reggie C. says:

Which is the better out pitch: Buchholz’s curve or Joba’s slider?

  12. Mike Pop says:

    http://twitter.com/JonCouture/status/4787242923

Think they would bring him in for the 6th or so if Clay’s pitch count is too high?

  13. Riddering says:

That HBP would have been ball four anyway, right?

  14. Reggie C. says:

Whewwwww …. close call. youk hit a bomb … foul.

  15. Mike Pop says:

    I can’t believe FOX doesn’t have a football game on at 1.

    So ridiculous.

  16. No. No it’s not. It is not Taco Bellsbury’s second spectacular catch in this series. The first ‘diving’ catch in game one was him slowing down, catching it leaning, and then sliding on the ground. So frustrating when people overreact to ordinary catches.

  17. Reggie C. says:

Bradshaw = new Goal line RB

    j/k

  18. Reggie C. says:

This FOX gun has got to be juiced a tad. Buchholz hitting 97?

    • Tom Zig says:

      aren’t all network guns juiced?

The YES gun is just wholly inaccurate. I remember one time it had CC at like 67mph for one of his pitches.

  19. mustang says:

Oakland is horrible. Talk about getting your as kicked.

Now if KC can beat Dallas it would make up for what’s going on in Boston.

  20. Dela G says:

i am loving watching the cowgirls lose

    • Mike Pop says:

      Cowgirls, how original.

Shit is tough man, I was looking forward to going to the game on December 6th. I don’t know anymore ;(

      • mustang says:

I’m looking forward to December 6th.
        LOL

      • Dela G says:

i am a jets fan in texas, and i can’t effing stand the cowboys fans who talk shit like their team is going to the superbowl.

this team is 9-7 at best

        • Mike Pop says:

Mhm, I try to be a realist. I’m a little biased but who isn’t, right?

I predicted 10-6 for this team, so I may be wrong, may be right. Who knows, they blew two games they should have won. At least win one of those games, ha.

But true, a lot of fans talk shit like that but that applies to most teams fans.

Right now, they look like ass. But I’ll go out on a limb and say they win this game. Hah.

    • mustang says:

It bring me almost as much joy as watching the Red Sox lose.

  21. Riddering says:

This game certainly reminds me how much I love baseball, considering I’m geeked over this inning though it’s Sox and Halos.

  22. Reggie C. says:

Sinorice Moss …. falling down the WR depth chart as i type this.

  23. mustang says:

Come on Halos make my Sunday

  24. Drew says:

woohoo. Bases loaded with the future closer relieving the future ace.

  25. Jersey says:

As the Twins have shown us, bases loaded and nobody out doesn’t necessarily mean squat.

  26. Mike Pop says:

    Good job by Bard.

  27. JobaWockeeZ says:

I love how overrated the Angel’s speed is currently.

  28. Reggie C. says:

This is alittle early for David Carr …

Big spot for Carr who needs some game reel to land somewhere else next season for more money.

    • Mike Pop says:

The Giants are a dominate football team.

Eli has that heel pain right? No big deal imo. Eli is a phenomenal quarterback, you guys are fine.

      Unfortunately.

  29. Jeter's Ford Edge says:

Why do some of you guys want the Sox to win so badly?

  30. mustang says:

It doesn’t matter Eli, Carr, even Romo.

  31. aj says:

I think I’d rather face the Red Sox, but I don’t them to get hot and come back with all this momentum.

  32. mustang says:

Man, I would love for Papelbon to blow this.

  33. Mike Pop says:

    Bard is really good.

  34. Jersey says:

I can’t believe they’re gonna make Oakland play another 30 minutes against this team.

  35. Salty Buggah says:

    Lombardi is dick.

So some guy posted on his blog about how A-rod faces the media no matter what but Pujols left yesterday after going only 3-10 in the sweep. However, then Steve later adds on:

Well, back in August, we did have this report to share from Tyler Kepner:

[Alex] Rodriguez is a ghost in the clubhouse, at home and on the road, especially before games. He limits his availability almost exclusively to brief sessions with a group after games in which he has made an impact, good or bad. He does almost no one-on-one interviews, and nobody questions the rules.

But, to MJ’s point…this refers to the regular season and not the post-season.

    Fucker

  36. ClayBuchholzLovesLaptops says:

Would that be called an infield-double?

  37. Reggie C. says:

Raiders D-line is tightening up. Too. Late.

  38. Salty Buggah says:

    cmon Kendry 3 run HR

  39. Jersey says:

    No Papelbon here?

  40. whozat says:

I love how Martinez is all over Pedroia’s jock for making a play that any fundamentally solid 2B makes. Oh! He had so much GRIT to get in front of an easy grounder! He just WILLED himself to throw out the lead-footed Kendry Morales!

    • Riddering says:

      Agreed.

I was shaking my head over the the bases-loaded DP earlier when he commented on what a perfect & difficult play Grits made. It was one of the most natural DP balls I had ever seen.

  41. mustang says:

    YESSSSS1!!!!!

  42. Jeter's Ford Edge says:

    THERE WE GO!!!

  43. ClayBuchholzLovesLaptops says:

No fist-pump on that one, Papelbon?

  44. Mike Axisa says:

Perfect. Stress Papelbon, stress it out.

  45. whozat says:

You know, it’s the Sox bullpen depth that really impresses me.

  46. Alex S says:

paps will choke big time right now

  47. Riddering says:

The Red Sox have the best bullpen in baseball, folks.

  48. whozat says:

Really? You don’t PH Kendrick right here?

  49. whozat says:

    Willits FAIL

  50. Reggie C. says:

    Reggie W. … damn.

  51. Mike Axisa says:

Awful Reggie, just awful. Maybe the first time you almost got picked should have been a sign you were too far off the bag.

  52. Drew says:

    You suck Reggie Willits.

  53. crapulent aka I said good day sir says:

I can’t believe he didn’t know Papelbon was going to throw to 1st again.

  54. Jeter's Ford Edge says:

    facepalm

  55. Alex S says:

after the game ESPN will praise papelbon’s ability to throw the runner out and John Kruk will go on a rant about how most pitchers can’t

  56. mustang says:

Can someone please tell me where that ass was going ?

  57. Jersey says:

    HAHAHA

    What a pinch running fail.

  58. Riddering says:

I want the Sox to hold up their lead but, damn, I got such a chuckle out of seeing Paps fail right there.

  59. mustang says:

let them blow it in the 9th that’s even more painful

  60. Drew says:

I wish Manny was still there to smack Youkilis in the face.

  61. Jeter's Ford Edge says:

I didn’t know Jepsen thew that fast.

    • Andy in Sunny Daytona says:

I would say that this radar gun is about 3 mph fast.

      • whozat says:

Then Gameday is too. I checked.

        • Andy in Sunny Daytona says:

          I guess gameday is infallible.

          • whozat says:

I didn’t say that. However, what’s more likely? That two, separate radar guns run by different organizations are similarly miscalibrated, or that you’re wrong?

            • Andy in Sunny Daytona says:

What makes you think that they are two separate radar guns?

              • whozat says:

…because in pretty much every game I’ve watched all season, whether on ESPN, YES, MY9, or whatever channel it is that the Giants are on out here, the guns have read differently on gameday and on TV. I’m pretty sure gameday is driven off the pitchfx data, and the in-game TV radar gun is not.

                • Andy in Sunny Daytona says:

I hear ya, but the way TBS broadcasts have gone, I think there is absolutely no reason why they wouldn’t piggyback gameday’s data.

  62. Riddering says:

Is Aybar really good on D or is this just a case of my eyes seeing some good plays?

  63. JMK aka The Overshare says:

I feel terrible for Raiders fans (if there are any left). This is just sad.

  64. whozat says:

How come we’re not hearing any salivating over Jepsen’s fastball? Every single pitch in that AB came in 98-99

  65. Salty Buggah says:

Oh look, Ortiz got his 1st hit of the playoffs. A measly single.

  66. Jeter's Ford Edge says:

damn it, I don’t like the idea of having Lester and Beckett pitch the next games…

    • whozat says:

Beckett has been solidly mediocre for a month.

Besides…what’s the worst thing that happens? The Yanks lead off the ALCS with Sabathia @ Bucholz?

      • Mike bk says:

it would be CC v Clay, AJ vs Lester and Andy vs Beckett. the more interesting is if Mike will go for the throat and go with Lackey short tomorrow

  67. Salty Buggah says:

    damnit Jepsen

  68. Riddering says:

I walked away from the game for a moment and then thought Ortiz stole there.

My mind was blown for a hot second.

  69. AndrewYF says:

I can get behind this Boston victory. Best-case scenario for the Yankees is it going 5 games, then either team would be at a disadvantage, unless the Yankees series goes 5 games as well.

    • ClayBuchholzLovesLaptops says:

That series going to five games is the best-case scenario for the Yankees anyway. Flying cross-country for game 5 and then back to NY for game 1 of the ALCS would be great.

      • AndrewYF says:

Remember that there is a day off in between, so it’s really not that bad. It’s more about the pitcher matchups.

        • ClayBuchholzLovesLaptops says:

Winning today would mean we could go with CC for three games in the ALCS. I like our chances with that. Especially considering that LAA/BOS would not be able to line up their rotations.

  70. ClayBuchholzLovesLaptops says:

Wow, Martinez literally GRITTED the fan out of his way.

  71. Riddering says:

    Damn, Aybar. Nice job.

  72. mustang says:

    Yessss come on HR

  73. Drew says:

Man, after we bring the ruckus to Pavano tonight, the Yanks are going to have to sit for 4 days before game 1 of the ALCS.

  74. Drew says:

Damn I hope Bobby gets up.

  75. Riddering says:

The only thing sadder than seeing little kids in Sox gear is little kids who have to hold up political propaganda posters for their parents.

  76. mustang says:

    Alright baby make it hurt…PLEASE

  77. Drew says:

He’s not faired well against Papelbon? He’s got a 500 obp against him. I’d say that’s pretty fucking good.

  78. mustang says:

    He was on that

  79. Mike Axisa says:

Yay Bobby. Make that jig dancing prick sweat.

  80. mustang says:

    YES BABY……BOBBY BOBBY

  81. Jersey says:

    GLOCKO POP POP POP

  82. Mike Axisa says:

Man, Figgins could have scored on that shit. Awful throw from Bay.

  83. Riddering says:

That’s why Tito doesn’t want you to close when he has a choice, Paps.

  84. Drew says:

I love me some Bobby!! But damn the 3rd base coach might have fucked up there.

  85. Jersey says:

    Now Torii: DON’T BUNT

  86. mustang says:

    Who doesn’t want this

  87. Mike Axisa says:

    Okay, I enjoyed that.

  88. Tampa Yankee says:

    WOOOOOOOOOHOOOOOOOOOOO!

  89. Drew says:

    YAYYYYYYY VLADDY!!!!!

  90. mustang says:

    YESSSSSS!!!!!!!

  91. JMK aka The Overshare says:

    Red Sox collapsing out there.

  92. ClayBuchholzLovesLaptops says:

    Papschmear!!!

  93. JobaWockeeZ says:

    Fist pump that Paps.

  94. Andy in Sunny Daytona says:

    NNNIIIICCCCEEE!

  95. Jeter's Ford Edge says:

    Vlad the Impaler!!!!!!

  96. Drew says:

haha Bobby hit Figgins in the face by accident.

  97. Tampa Yankee says:

    Ellsbury’s got a cannon, no?

  98. Jersey says:

No weaknesses except for the suck

  99. mustang says:

    mustang says:
    October 11th, 2009 at 2:37 pm
Man, I would love for Papelbon to blow this.

    Your such a loving God

  100. Salty Buggah says:

    HAHA! Suck it Papelfuck!

  101. AndrewYF says:

SOSH just exploded. I was rooting for Boston, but this is fun as well.

  102. V says:

I wanted Boston to win in 5 tough games, but… y’know what?

    I’ll take this shit. Sweet.

    The Angels scare me though.

  103. Mike Pop says:

    Lol @ that.

  104. Ivan says:

Hahahahha Papelfag. Go fist pump that bitch.

  105. Jordan says:

    lol papelbon

  106. Drew says:

Awww. Papelbitch has a sad face.

  107. JobaWockeeZ says:

Finally Pap’s high WHIP catches up to him and what a perfect time to do so.

  108. Whitey14 says:

Sox have had okay luck with Fuentes, it’s not over just yet….

  109. Drew says:

Oh boy, Fuentes? Please don’t blow it.

  110. Andy in Sunny Daytona says:

During this offseason, his name’s going to be Papelgone.

  111. Tom Zig says:

I guess having no weaknesses means getting swept…hmmmm

  112. Steve2 says:

anyone know why wagner didn’t come in? I just turned the game on

  113. ClayBuchholzLovesLaptops says:

Not even Papelbon could have closed that door.

  114. Andy in Sunny Daytona says:

Jed Lowrie….greatest pinch hitter ever. Incredible depth.

  115. Voice of Reason says:

Kruk and his ‘no-weakness’ Red Sox can suck Vlad’s gigantic manparts.

  116. Reggie C. says:

SOSH must be imploding as i type this.

  117. Andy in Sunny Daytona says:

Remember Angels, “History doesn’t mean a thing”, works both ways.

    /Karma’d

  118. Drew says:

    Sad Bostonians make me smile.

  119. Jeter's Ford Edge says:

Pedroia’s pure grit will naturally launch one over the monster….

  120. Alex S says:

did any1 catch that? TBS changed the score of the game. 7-7, then 7-6 boston, then back to normal 7-6 L.A. it happened when mathis caught the fly ball

  121. mustang says:

Pain, humiliation, and suffering for the Red Sox.

Whatever was wrong with the universal has just been fixed.

  122. Reggie C. says:

    SWEEP.

  123. Ivan says:

    But the Sox Can’t Lose.

  124. Tampa Yankee says:

    IETS (i enjoyed that sweep)

  125. ClayBuchholzLovesLaptops says:

    Fist-pump.

  126. Riddering says:

Standing ovation for the Angels today!

  127. aj says:

    I can’t believe they swept.

  128. Dela G says:

    HAHAHAHAAHAHAHAHAAHAHAH

    *breath*

    HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA

  129. Rey22 says:

I can’t wait to read the articles tomorrow defending the Red Sox. It will be priceless.

  130. ClayBuchholzLovesLaptops says:

Romo to Austin for the TD. What a minute!!!

  131. MikeD says:

Fantastic. Always love to see the Red Sox lose, and at their park, and they’re swept, and they blow the lead with their “savior” Papelbum on the mound. Poser Nation, go cry in your beers.

  132. Whitey14 says:

    I’ve got two choices here:

    A) Become a fan of the Angels for the next week and a half

    B) Shift focus to Patriots and count days until Spring Training 2010…

    • Andy in Sunny Daytona says:

      C) Cross over to the Darkside. Embrace it.

    • JMK aka The Overshare says:

You have other choices. You could convert your allegiance to the greatest sports franchise of all time. You could also simply root for an NL team. You could take up a new hobby, like baking or something (sorry, pussy tubing is off limits). Enjoy your off-season!

      • Whitey14 says:

Would you be referring to the Boston Celtics, or Montreal Canadiens, both of whom have won a greater percentage of their league’s championships than your Yankees?
(They only qualify as the greatest Baseball franchise of all time, sorry ;-)

NL baseball just isn’t as good ;-)

I do have other hobbies: Playing Softball, Strat-o-matic Baseball, and spending time with the family, for which there is never an offseason, thankfully :-)

        • Andy in Sunny Daytona says:

Now we have to go by percentage? What about the Houston Comets?

          • Whitey14 says:

Damn, you’ve got me there Andy.

I guess this one is for each person to decide for themselves. I’ve always wondered why the guy with the best batting average wins the batting title instead of the guy with the most hits, but the guy with the most home runs wins the home run crown instead of the guy with the best HR/AB ratio…beats the hell out of me!

  133. Andy in Sunny Daytona says:

Papelbon at the press conference; “I got 3 outs!” then dances a jig.

  134. aj says:

Between the Red Sox throwing at hitters and storming the mound (Starting fights) and Minnesota stealing signs and not running in the baseline, I’d say they both got what they deserved.

  135. RichYF says:

Where’s Lucky? He told me this series had a predetermined outcome. I don’t understand what’s happening…

  136. Reggie C. says:

Cue the walk it out music for those Red Sox.

I want to see Kruk explain this.

  137. camilo gerardo says:

    lol, go how chowda heads

  138. AndrewYF says:

SOSH thinks that Papelbon is actually a very tradeable commodity. They seem to forget that he’s making in excess of $7 million in arbitration. There are very few teams who would even want Papelbon, much less give up actual value for him.

  139. JFH says:

Someone should ask Dan Shaughnessy if the Sox are showing all their cards yet.

  140. GG says:

the angels are going to be a tough matchup

    • Drew says:

Yepp. It should be, the two best teams in the league will go at it in the ALCS.

    • MikeD says:

Totally. As much as I like to see the Sox lose, and in the embarassing way they lost, I also know the Angels are a tougher match-up for the Yankees than the Sox (that’s if the Yankees get one more win in the next three, and I don’t on anything until it’s done.)

  141. Drew says:

    Beckett FAIL
    Lester FAIL
    Buchholz FAIL
    Papelbon FAIL
    Wagner FAIL
    Youkilis FAIL
    Slopi FAIL
    Grit FAIL

It’s days like today I wish alex gonzalez was real.

    • JMK aka The Overshare says:

Eh, you can’t really blame their starting pitching. Especially Lester.

      • ClayBuchholzLovesLaptops says:

Buchholz did a good job, too.

        • whozat says:

Pitching five innings and loading the bases in the sixth without getting an out?

If Joba had a start like that, there’s be Yankees fans aplenty screaming that he needs to be in the pen.

All told, it was actually a perfectly acceptable start, but not “good”

          • ClayBuchholzLovesLaptops says:

Fine, then “good” wasn’t the right word. He at least went 3-for-5 stealing laptops from the science lab, you have to count that, right?

      • Drew says:

Today Buchholz only went 5+. Lester didn’t pitch a great game, he walked 4. He kind of fell apart towards the end of the season for whatever reason. Beckett was not his usual post-season self. Their hitters absolutely disappeared but their starters are not absolved from criticism.

        • JMK aka The Overshare says:

I’m not saying the starters should be absolved from criticism, but of all the aspects of the team, they were probably the best, and even then, they were merely okay-to-good. But really, their hitting was awful, the bullpen wasn’t very good, and defense was poor. That’s why they lost, not the starting pitching.

  142. Chris says:

Somewhere, Peter Gammons is adjusting a noose…

  143. Ivan says:

Well how much times were gonna hear “Angels have own the yanks” or “The yanks have never beaten the Angels” and stuff.

  144. ROBTEN says:

And, a largely over-performing Angels team (according to all of BP’s adjusted standings) sweeping a slightly over-performing Red Sox team means a severe correction when they arrive in the Bronx.

    Or, as TSJC says…

    WE.
    WILL.
    NOT.
    BE.
    STOPPED.

  145. Alex S says:

the Angles will be the toughest test for the Yankees this year, i don’t care who makes it to the WS in the NL. Dodgers or Phillies/Rockies I believe the Yankees can beat any of those teams but the Angels are always sooo tough to beat for the yanks for some reason. don’t get me wrong i think the yankees can and will beat the angels but they’re always tough

  146. gargoyle says:

Sometimes being a Yankees fan in Boston is really fun.

  147. Alex S says:

ok so what are the starters matchups?

  148. MikeD says:

It’s the curse of the PeteAbe. The Sox will never win again!

  149. Dela G says:

good to see pete abe’s first week on the job go so well ;)

i do wish him well though

  150. gxpanos says:

Haha from SOSH during the 9th:

“Monster door open, ghosts are here. Magic to follow.”

I guess Fenway crew hasn’t quite ushered out all the ghosts over 86 years old…

  151. Andy in Sunny Daytona says:

I still say, unequivocally, if the Red Sox would have faced the Orioles in the first round, they would have advanced. I’m convinced of this.

  152. GG says:

So the Angels knock the Sox out and the headline on the ESPN MLB page is the caption moving on with a picture of the Red Sox???? That makes sense I guess???

  153. southernyankeefan says:

ESPN has the picture on the baseball homepage as saying Moving On and has a picuture or red sox players and not angels

  154. Jersey says:

Oh my Mo. That’s as close as it gets.

  155. Drew says:

John Henry, how’s that curse going?

  156. Reggie C. says:

So does this sweep more or less ensure that the Red Sox are going to be out front and center for another big hitter? Does Theo now meet SD’s demands and land A-Gonz?

  157. Drew says:

heh ESPN already took down the Boston picture from the main page. I guess a Bengals win is more important than an ALDS win/loss.

    • Zack says:

well the d-coor lost his wife this week and the bengals that people laugh at because of stuff that happens 3 years ago, beat everyone’s #1 team.

even with that, no- its not bigger than the sox and paplebon sucking

  158. Mike Axisa says:

In all seriousness, it’s games like this that really make you appreciate Mariano Rivera.

  159. Salty Buggah says:

Ah damn, fuckin Prater. Lost 3 potentially important points there. We were rolling too.

  160. Andy in Sunny Daytona says:

I remember as a kid, Jose Mota playing for the Astros Daytona farm team. The announcer would say JOOOOSSSSSEEE MOOOOTA

  161. whozat says:

J Papelbon: -.797 Win Probability added

    HA!

  162. Zack says:

    papelbon is in steep decline
    fire francona
    beckett is NOT an ace
    lester sucked when it counted
fire theo for trading for wagner, who sucks in the playoffs
obviously buchholz belongs in the 8th
    worst LF/CF defense ever
    youk batted .083, UNCLUTCH!

/if people viewed the sox as they do the yankees

  163. Reggie C. says:

The Hanley Ramirez rumors are going to explode within 24 hours. Remember people … its just gonna be knee-jerk rumors.

  164. mustang says:

I can’t stop watching the highlights on MLB network.

    • Zack says:

      +1

i’m going to watch first take tomorrow, around the horn, pti, 1st and 10, and listen to weei and just enjoy the panic and/or excuses

  165. The Iron Horse says:

Papelbon’s stupid face deserved every second of it. Stupid fish face looking loser.
