It's hard to blame him for trying. He's not very bright and knows nothing about finance, but became famous writing about it because he hates Goldman Sachs and so do a lot of people.

He knows nothing about baseball and hates the Yankees. So do a lot of people. Why wouldn't it work?

Best comments from the article:

"Cashman has laid the foundation for 2009 to be maybe the most entertaining year for non–Yankees fans in the history of baseball. We are all trailing six car lengths behind, waiting for the pinstriped truck to jackknife and explode in a giant conflagration of scandals and finger-pointing. In an age when huge, irresponsible financial bets have brought Western civilization to the edge of collapse, Cashman’s Yankees are perfectly positioned to become an object lesson in everything that has gone wrong with American society in the past eight years or so."

"And unless the karma gods decide to spend the summer in a diabetic coma, it’s almost certainly what’s going to happen to this year’s Yankees. God, is it going to be fun to see. Nothing is more entertaining than watching the rich choke on their own greed."

Blame it on diabetes Matt!

Seriously though, there are valid criticisms of Cashman and an argument to be made against him but this article is just blatant Yankee hatred. First the author blames the Yankees for spending money on fre agents to "buy talent" and then he kills Cashman when he gives young players like Hughes and Cano a chance. How insanely hypocritical.

And I completely agree with Joe, it's good to see this idiocy called out!

Matt Taibbi's whole thing is to tear people apart. The problem with attacking Cashman in this manner is that

1) Everyone with a brain knows that he's not the worst GM in MLB and it's not even close.
2) Dude doesn't appear to know anything about baseball, so anyone who does comes away thinking that they just read a really stupid column (which they did).

another example of the many brilliant proclamations made before memorial day. it would be great to remind the many media folk of their picks and articles this spring. but they would probably use the "buying a championship" defense.

also another example of the general hatred by the media of the most popular team in baseball. thanks for sharing.

yea that guy is a self-righteous pretentious prick. cashman has obviously made some bad moves. but hes made more good ones. plus the golden child theo epstein is highly overrated.

i will agree that the arod contract is a bit stupid but other than that im satisfied with cashman. playing monopoly? come on, any gm polled in the league would have done the exact same thing given the resources avaliable to cashman.

my god if epstein or any other gm pulled off aj-tex-cc he would be hailed as a "genius that overcame all odds." cashman is a greedy idiot. i see the logic, douchebag.

do us all a favor and jump off the highest bridge you come across. maybe then you can actually right something relevant to mens journal.

Because objectively speaking, the job of New York Yankees general manager should be the single most failure-proof position not only in sports but in all of human society.

Step 1.) Create a false premise out of thin air, totally unsupported by any reason or thought
Step 2.) Write several thousand words of invalid conclusions based on that singular false premise and hope nobody notices
Step 3.) Sell that several thousand word article to a crappy third-rate men's magazine that only gets sold to dentists offices to sit in their waiting room end tables, gathering dust
Step 4.) Profit.

That team should have done almost exactly as well as it did. I saw that roster at the beginning of the season and thought to myself "92-96 wins, depending on whether or not the rays stay strong and the jays/orioles are competitive or not." They won 95.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Men%27s_Journal

Men's Journal is an American men's lifestyle magazine focused on outdoor recreation and comprising editorials on the outdoors, environmental issues, health and fitness, style and fashion, and "gear".

Something that Men's Journal does not focus on: Writing good and well reasoned sports editorials.

You're out of your depth, boys.

Hey Matt, why don't you stop talking for a while, you know, maybe sit the next few plays out.
