This afternoon’s chat still has no answer for Cliff Lee

By Mike Axisa

Dude was really frickin’ good, tip your cap to him. Let’s chat it out at 1pm ET today. See you then.

Oh, and make sure you check out Joe’s game recap at YES.

I eagerly anticipate pummeling Cliff Lee in Game 4.

Eventually, we can get to every pitcher. EVERY pitcher.

Yankees + time = death to pitchers

Word. I want Swisher in the video room with a little chalkboard writing “I will not drop my shoulder” a thousand times. I also want A-Rod watching video and writing “I will not try to pull outside pitches anymore. I am Alex Rodriguez, not Hideki Matsui.”

Chris says:

Cliff Lee post season ERA: 0.54
Rest of Phillies post season ERA: 4.85

Tom Zig says:

You think Manuel is going to start him on short rest?

Tank Foster says:

Abso-friggin’-lutely. Unless they are up 3-0.

Chris says:

Everything I’ve heard is that there are no plans on starting Lee on 3 days rest.

Bill R says:

He’s never pitched on 3 days rest in his career!

Let’s say you’re Charlie Manuel. Cliff Lee dominated the Yankees in Game 1, just like he’s been doing all postseason and all regular season since you got him.

Let’s further speculate that the Yankees win both Games 2 and 3, beating up Pedro and Hamels with relative efficiency (like, 3-5 runs off of each of them).

You’re now down 2 games to 1. Do you give the ball in Game 4 to Joe Blanton or J.A. Happ, risking another loss and thus being down 3 games to 1, with Lee going in Game 5 but now unavailable for Games 6 and 7 (i.e., more Pedro and Hamels in back to back elimination games at Yankee Stadium)?

Or, do you pitch Lee on short rest in Game 4, trying to tie the series up at 2-2 and thus, enabling you to bring back Lee in Game 7 and allowing you to play Games 5 and 6 with some combination of Blanton/Happ/Pedro/Hamels, knowing you only need to win one of those two games?

They’d probably go to Lee in Game 4 in all scenarios other than up 3-0.

Chris says:

One thing to consider with Lee is that he has never pitched on 3 days rest in his career – and has generally fared better when he has extra rest. Would you rather have a (likely) shutdown performance in game 5 on normal rest, or take your chances with him on short rest.

If I were Charlie Manuel, I wouldn’t start Pedro in game 2. I also wouldn’t relegate my second best starter this year (JA Happ) to the the pen or a 4th starter role. I would probably roll the dice and use Lee on 3 days rest, but every report I’ve heard suggests that the Phillies won’t do that.

Bill R says:

that’s fine! if he’s never pitched on short rest I’d take a chance in him tiring out by the 4th!

Arman Tamzarian says:

Mr. Burns: Smithers, use the amnesia ray
Smithers: You mean the revolver, sir?
Mr. Burns: Yes, and make sure to wipe your own memory clear when your finished

Hey Arman, can I borrow your copy of Swank?

Camilo Gerardo says:

let’s chat it out, bitches

Bill R says:

Who else was embarrassed last night?

Camilo Gerardo says:

don’t think hughes, bruney, etc. read the blog

skeleton coat says:

Not me. It’s one loss out of seven games and it wasn’t as if the Yankees lost because of poor playing.

They’ll win.

Jeremy says:

I wasn’t. Lee has been on an absolute tear. Sometimes a great pitcher is just unstoppable.

I would have been embarrassed if CC had crapped the bed. He didn’t.

I will be embarrassed if we get shut down by Pedro or any other Phillies pitcher who is not named Cliff Lee.

Bill R says:

I agree, but the bullpen especially Hughes made me want to puke!

Chris says:

The bullpen still has a post season ERA under 3.5. The supposed collapse of the Yankees pen is greatly exaggerated.

I agree. The bullpen wasn’t good, and I also wanted to puke.

That’s still a long way from “embarrassed”.

Tank Foster says:

I hope Manuel pitches Lee on short rest. I figured the Yankees would hit him, but I underestimated him. I think CC is a mythical horse-like beast and will do better on short rest than a soft-lobbing control specialist named “Cliff.”

Anyways, one game at a time. It’s time to pummel Pedro.

I think CC is a mythical horse-like beast and will do better on short rest than a soft-lobbing control specialist named “Cliff.”

Fun Fact: CC actually stands for Centaur Centaur Sabathia.

Accent Shallow says:

I agree. Control/command goes when a pitcher is tired, and that’s Lee’s game.

mryankee says:

Where the hell were the Yanks when Lee was available did they make any inquiries? The offens has not been hitting pitchers less taleneted than Lee. The only pitcher they have had asuccess against is Kazmir. I am not really all that happy that Molina is in the lineup tonight. Thats an easy out for Pedro. lee was throwing what 91-92 all night with good off speed stuff, I give him that but the offense was deplorable last night. No excuses for that kind of performance.

charlespoet says:

Yankees should win tonight for no other reason that Burnett is due for a good game. I don’t seem them hammering Pedro as everyone thinks will happen. THere are still too many holes in the line up right now.

Matsui looks like a fish on dry land
Tex is just lost
Swish should just play the field and not hit
Damon makes Matsui look locked in

Cano is streaky so he is what he is.

Cabrera is the enigma that can either save your butt or not help at all.

Posada he is starting to come around although his strike out to end the game may suggest otherwise.

That leaves ARod and Jeter as the only two that are hitting – except ARod did not last night.

Look for the Yankees to win this one close – 4-2, scoring an insurance run in the bottom of the 8th to give Mo cushion.

ShuutoHeat says:

Yankees should have played the batters box shuffle with Lee last night. You know, step up to the plate…fidget around with your elbow pad, gloves, cup, spit a few times in front of Ruiz (or at) and step right back out.

The Captain slowed Lee down a bit, it isn’t just the Captain being the Captain. Yankee batters were all being swept away by Lee’s pace as well as pitching. When someone is good and you get dragged to their pace…it gets even harder.
