Twins-Tigers Spillover Thread II

Best game I’ve seen all year.

Categories : Asides, Game Threads

  1. HEY YANKEE FANS, says:

It would be awesome if they switched to the Steve Harvey show right about now.

  2. Johan Iz My Brohan says:

Top of the order for the Twins next inning, get it!

  3. Tom Zig says:

Better than the 15 inning Sox/Yankees game?

  4. Drew says:

None of these relievers are really being over worked. I don’t know if this extra innings thing is going to work how I expected it to.

They should make these tie breakers playoff games and only allow the 25 man roster.

  5. Alan says:

Who do the Twins have left? Gardy is making alot of bullpen switches.

  6. Salty Buggah says:

Wow, nice game going on. Any amazing things happen yet?

  7. I can has 15 innings please?

  8. crapulent aka I said good day sir says:

I hope this doesn’t come back to haunt us some way, some how. Like the winner is so on fire coming into the Bronx and the Yanks just assume they’re tired.

  9. ForTheLoveOfTheGame says:

burn the pen burn the pen burn the pen burn the pen…
    we can dream?

    • notsodirtypop says:

to every Pen, burn burn burn, there is a (regular) season (game), burn burn burn, and make time for every pitcher under the sun

  10. handtius says:

Can you guys believe this?!? My laptops out for repairs so I can’t enjoy the game chats during the game, but man, I hop this goes on all night…either team will be minced meat tomorrow.

  11. I feel obligated to point out that while the Tigers have a paucity of lefty batters on their 25-man team, there were still opportunities that arose during this game that propelled the Twins to bring in a lefty reliever TWICE. First Mijares, then Mahay.

Keep that little nugget of information in your pocket.

(grins smugly in Tyler Kepner’s direction)

  12. JGS says:

    rodney is still out there???

  13. HEY YANKEE FANS, says:

i would forbid the twins from swinging at a single rodney pitch

  14. Dela G says:

i still think the 15 inning game was the best all season, but this is number 2 for sure

  15. scooter says:

Twins win it here – Rodney gets gassed and gives it up

  16. Drew says:

Damn C-Grand, that’s how you do it.

  17. Alan says:

Hell of a catch, Granderson. You could patrol centerfield for my team any day of the week.

  18. Oh snap, Granderson.

  19. Esteban says:

Ron Darling, no Granderson has been getting TERRRRRRIBLE jumps lately.

  20. Dela G says:

    granderson is incredible

  21. Riddering says:

I’d almost forgotten what it feels like to watch live playoff games.

    Sweet candy.

  22. Dela G says:

    The OC FTL

  23. Drew says:

OC that’s why you don’t curse at the umpire.. lol

  24. ARX says:

    Wow brutal call

  25. Mike bk says:

is rodney even available tomorrow. this shows how little leyland believes in the rest of his bullpen.

  26. Esteban says:

Way to run that out Mauer

  27. Pasqua says:

On two occasions tonight the announcers have implied that this game hurts the Yankees because “they still don’t know which scouting reports to go over.” That is just frighteningly asinine.

  28. Arman Tamzarian says:

I can’t believe they pitched to Mauer

  29. ForTheLoveOfTheGame says:

    inning/score call

    i’ll start

bottom 13 twins walk on span’s hit

  30. Mauer swinging at the first pitch against Rodney? Does not compute.

  31. Dela G says:

    keep it going guys

    i want verlander to pitch

  32. Alan says:

I think its interesting that we’re seeing two different bullpen strategies at work here tonight.

Detroit has been sticking to a relative few relievers (4) this evening, letting them get work in. Minnesota, on the other hand, has been spreading the damage around and keeping fresh arms on the mound (9).

We’ll see which one works out.

    • Chip says:

The Tigers don’t have anybody else out there that can make outs though where as the Twins are much deeper

    • The Artist says:

Don’t forget this is a regular season game, so they both have expanded rosters.

      • Alan says:

Yeah, but they’re using the guys they’ve been using all year. Both teams are pretty much at the end of their ropes. Detroit has little quality left in their ‘pen and Minnesota just flat out has no one else. If this goes longer, we’re looking at starters having to come in.

  33. GG says:

I’ve shown up in time to let everyone know. I’ve talked with Joe Mauer, and he is in fact about to hit a walkoff

  34. Mike bk says:

    rodney 36 pitches

  35. Ivan says:

Wow, if your sports fan, this is an absolute treat.

  36. Darling was so going to say “You can sleep when you’re dead” but realized it was inappropriate.

  37. Salty Buggah says:

That Rox-Padres game was all sorts of awesome

  38. Pasqua says:

I’d like to think that Sabathia is sound asleep in his bed by now… dreaming of happy things…and strikeouts.

  39. Mike bk says:

quick, pinch run for him. lol.

  40. Mike bk says:

is thames still on the bench?

  41. Mike bk says:

wow, blackburn threw a side today so he isnt pitching tomorrow on 3 days rest.

  42. Delmon Young is just all sorts of fail.

  43. yankeefan91 Arod fan says:

  44. JSquared says:

    TEH LUCKNESS!!1!111111111!

  45. Mike bk says:

wow, have to throw to 2nd.

  46. GG says:

How many dingers would Miguel have had this year if he played his home games at YS

  47. Drew says:

    Delmon Young FAIL

  48. HEY YANKEE FANS, says:

    oh delmon

  49. Mike bk says:

ha, forgot to mention the worst play in the game to allow the guy to get to 3rd.

  50. Peedlum says:

23 innings. Please. If it goes 27 innings I’ll begin to believe the hand of Mo is involved.

  51. Mike bk says:

edwin jackson for the bot 12?

  52. scooter says:

Throwing to the wrong base on that single – more bad fundamentals from the Twins – really has to irk Gardenhire

    Bases loaded for Inge

  53. ARX says:

I got a bad feeling about this AB…

  54. crapulent aka I said good day sir says:

Nick Swisher will not pitch in this game, will he?

  55. Alan says:

    Bad call, ump.

  56. Pasqua says:

Nothing says “gamer” like pretending your jersey got grazed with the bases loaded.

  57. Drew says:

That was a hbp. Ump fail

  58. Esteban says:

    that got inge

  59. Accent Shallow says:

    Twins lucked out there.

I can’t believe Keppel is the guy to pitch with the season on the line.

  60. Pasqua says:

My wife just announced that she’s uncomfortable with Chip’s liberal used of the word “fisted.”

  61. Riddering says:

Damn, Mauer gets another MVP vote for that stop.

  62. Drew says:

If the Twins get out of this unscathed I’ll be shocked.

  63. Mike Axisa says:

    What a play by Punto.

  64. Pasqua says:

    This game is unreal.

  65. JSquared says:

  66. Alan says:

That was a hell of a play, Punto. Damn this is a great game. Let’s have another inning of this.

  67. scooter says:

    Punto with teh grit!

Miguel wasn’t moving at light speed – but that’s smart baseball

  68. The Artist says:

Great play by Punto there. No way he turns the DP

  69. Esteban says:

that’s punto’s grittiness showing through. jokes aside, that was a really good play

  70. TheLastClown says:

    How un-Canolike!

  71. ansky says:

This is sick…I think John Sterling just passed out on his couch.

  72. Finish the sentence, Chip…

  73. Mike bk says:

can Jose Molina draw the walk?

  74. ARX says:

    Here we go…

  75. HEY YANKEE FANS, says:

oh god do NOT walk him in

  76. What’s with the Punto/Cano comps? Did I miss something.

  77. JSquared says:

  78. Mike bk says:

    that was BALL FOUR

  79. ARX says:

Thank you come again. Tie preserved :-)

  80. ansky says:

  81. cjc says:

    wow again

  82. Esteban says:

    wowza wowza

  83. losjanks says:

    what a pitch. brilliant.

  84. HEY YANKEE FANS, says:

    i just clapped so hard

  85. crapulent aka I said good day sir says:

    Holy crap.

  86. Johan Iz My Brohan says:

    Holy shit.

  87. Salty Buggah says:

    ball 4 there

  88. Dela G says:

    this is epic

  89. Arman Tamzarian says:

This games going to need it’s own sportscenter

  90. Accent Shallow says:

If the Twins don’t walk off, who the hell is left in the ‘pen?

  91. TheLastClown says:

Who in the hell is Bob Keppel?!

  92. Pasqua says:

So the old baseball adage proves true again: “ALWAYS underestimate Gerald Laird.”

  93. AndrewYF says:

Why the hell did Nathan throw only 21 pitches in a must-win game at home?

  94. The Artist says:

From a Yankee perspective, could this have worked out any better?

First we get a Play in game, then it goes extra innings.

  95. HEY YANKEE FANS, says:

    please never end, game

  96. Alan says:

Fernando Rodney is still in? Good Mo, Leyland has no trust in the rest of his bullpen.

  97. Esteban says:

NO SKIP CARAY! the yankees do not have to stay up late to formulate a game plan

  98. Arman Tamzarian says:

Rodney still? Do they want to win?

  99. Henry Triana says:

Yo don’t want to over work a closer. A reliever after 25 pitches is a toss up in terms of effectiveness.

  100. AndrewYF says:

The game should end in a tie, and the Yankees get to choose their opponent.

  101. cjc says:

rodney still??????????????? I bet that is going to cost them

  102. Chip says:

The Yankees have to stay up late formulating their game plan? Yeah right, the game isn’t until 6 tomorrow, you don’t think they could just check the scouting reports in the morning?

    • JSquared says:

There’s what… 2 possible pitchers from each team that could start tomorrow… and pretty much all the same fielders playing today…

    • Pasqua says:

It’s insane. And the 3rd time he’s brought it up.

People are going to watch the game, TBS. No need to fabricate a storyline.

  103. scooter says:

There’s no way Rodney makes it through this inning

    Leadoff single

    Teh power of the ex-Mets!

  104. JSquared says:

    Carlos Gomez?…?…

  105. Raf says:

so if the Tigers win, will Rodney be available before game 3?

  106. Mike bk says:

    rodney is getting abused

  107. ansky says:

3rd Inning for Rodney??? Nice one Jimmy!

  108. JGS says:

    rodney is still in?

  109. Accent Shallow says:

    Rodney is still in here?

  110. Ivan says:

    Gomez on Base

  111. TheLastClown says:

    Carlos Gomez: .25

    Santana: 0

  112. ansky says:

This game’s going to end here. Gomez can fly…damn you Leyland!

  113. Mike bk says:

i would walk him too to pitch to casill

  114. ARX says:

Cmon, double play…give us 3 more innings.

  115. I’m actually pretty shocked that Delmon Young isn’t swinging right now.

  116. Drew says:

I see Leyland really dislikes his pen.

  117. Accent Shallow says:

Odds on Young making an out during the IBB?

    Say, 5 to 1?

  118. Ivan says:

Can’t say i blame Jim for briging Rodney in for a 3rd inning of work.

  119. Raf says:

    suicide squeeze failed attempt….come on!

  120. scooter says:

    Casilla 3-5 lifetime vs Rodney?

    Wow Jim – wtf?

  121. AndrewYF says:

Why the fuck would you intentionally walk Delmon Young?

  122. cjc says:

I can’t believe he would risk a 3rd inning of rodney in a do or die game

  123. yankeefan91 Arod fan says:

    Were Facing the twins

  124. ansky says:

    called it.

  125. ARX says:

    damn. Good game.

  126. Johan Iz My Brohan says:

  127. Riddering says:

There we go. Twins win. We’re playing Mauer and the lefties.

  128. JobaWockeeZ says:

Almost as bad as the Mets collapse.

  129. Alan says:

Good job, Leyland. You really showed your bullpen prowess tonight.

    See you tomorrow, Twins.

  130. Mike bk says:

    sabathia vs duensing tomorrow

  131. Drew says:

Well. That’s that. Twinkies Yanks. Yanks in 3 plz.

  132. JSquared says:

Ah, The Relentlessness of using your bullpen… nice.

  133. Pasqua says:

  134. Accent Shallow says:

Alexi Casilla does not take kindly to disrespect!

  135. Where the hell was the RF?

  136. Dela G says:

    wow great game

jim leyland is an idiot leaving rodney in for so long

  137. Ivan says:

    Twins win,

Now they’ll get their asses kicked by the yanks next week.

  138. Esteban says:

I’m happy the twins won. They have no pitching besides Nathan.

    • Ivan says:

It didn’t matter which team was gonna win, they’ll fate is the same, which was being destroyed by the team that plays in the Empire State.

  139. cjc says:

nice job jimmy seriously great bp management

  140. pat says:

    Twinkies it is.

  141. Arman Tamzarian says:

Good, now everyone get really, really drunk to celebrate

  142. TheLastClown says:

I would now like to express my gratitude to the Twins, for assuring that the Yankees will face Justin Verlander exactly Zero times in this years ALDS.

    Thank you.

  143. The Artist says:

Congratulations to the Twins, you have just earned the right to get your asses kicked by the best team in Baseball.

  144. Sam P. says:

Now the Yanks can finally start scouting their opponent in the ALDS! They need to hurry … there’s no time left! Aaaahh!!!

  145. Nels says:

Are they playing New York, New York?

  146. yankeefan91 Arod fan says:

Was the right fielder playing right field.

  147. Raf says:

tip your cap to Leyland and the Tigers? what the hell for?

  148. Pasqua says:

I like the matchup, but I fucking hate dome baseball.

  149. scooter says:

    Alexei Casilla, playoff hero

Leyland really goofed there – I think you HAVE to think about Edwin Jackson there.

Power relievers not named Mo aren’t going to give you almost 4 perfect innings

  150. ansky says:

Beware Carlos Gomez running inside the baseline to try and break Tex’s wrist.

  151. Mike says:

Regardless of who we play after seeing like this you can learn to expect anything… Leyland definitely didn’t manage his bullpen effectively at all. Either team, the Twins or the Tigers is going to be a good matchup. Hopefully the Yankees play as good as they have all year and take the series, tomorrow Yankees Vs Twins, can’t wait.

  152. Dela G says:

by the way, who called the twins winning this game in the first game thread by one run?

    Dela G did

  153. ansky says:

Great another damn playoff series agains that damn Orlando Cabrera…side bar: WTF is Craig Sager wearing???????

  154. Jake H says:

You have to wonder what time the Twins will get in to NY tonight. Also how much they will have tomorrow against CC

  155. JGS says:

    wow that is some suit

  156. King OK says:

Just to tell everyone I called that someone would win in the 12th, now we got game 1 tomorrow

  157. So why do we have to “tip our caps” to Leyland and the Tigers, Caray?

  158. Peedlum says:

time to break out the instant hangover cheap champagne. and some 40′s.

  159. CanoFTW says:

I hope the Twins are celebrating well into the night tonight

  160. crapulent aka I said good day sir says:

They’re already doing the whole underdog thing. You’re underdogs because your owners pocket the revenue money we pay.

  161. TheLastClown says:

So Blackburn for Game 2, Pavano for game 3?

    Confidence level?

  162. ansky says:

So I guess this means Marte is on the roster. Can I please please please see Carl Pavano in game 1 or 2???? Its PAYBACK TIME Pussyboy!

  163. Pasqua says:

I’m telling you, this postseason is fated.

First, we will “thank” Carl Pavano for his years of service to the organization.

Later, the monster shall destroy its creator when we dispatch Joe Torre in the World Series.

  164. MrBear says:

easily one the best games I’ve seen all year…

  165. Mike bk says:

Sabathia v Duensing…Burnett vs Blackburn…Andy vs Baker or Pavano in game 3.

  166. Peedlum says:

Can someone lay odds on whether Miguel Cabrera is drunk already?

  167. HEY YANKEE FANS, says:

    baseball rules.

  168. Drew says:

Hopefully Pavano takes a cab to the airport.

  169. The Artist says:

Well, from the Tigers perspective at least Miguel Cabrera can get drunk and beat up his wife again tonight without it affecting the team.

  170. ansky says:

Let the $10 dollar Champagne flow all night boys. I’m actually kinda glad the game ended now…means Tex and the guys can catch some ZZZ’s..except for Jeter I’m sure he’s at 40/40.

  171. Patrick says:

In listening to the game, I just kept thinking Verlander was going to come in. Sure, Rodney is a reliever and Verlander just pitched on Sunday, but I just had the feeling that Verlander would have thrown a pitch before the Tigers lost.

Great game. Nice to listen to it on MLB Radio. The Minnesota guys were good. Reminded me a lot of the guys from the White Sox. Homers for the most part, but at they make it fun. Also makes you appreciate some good radio guys, which I’m not sure we have here in New York. A nice change from Sterling and the Suze.

    • whozat says:

I liked the way Darling and Caray handled the end of the top of the 12th. On that last pitch, just nothing…crowd noise…Laird swings…

  172. Peedlum says:

No way the twins get into NY before 2 am.

  173. crapulent aka I said good day sir says:

Thank you Detroit for majorly sucking. Twins, get drunk and be late tomorrow. Thank you. Sincerely, New York

  174. JMK aka The Overshare says:

Leyland fell asleep at the wheel there. I know his bullpen is atrocious, but he was going to have Rodney go four innings? Madness. Absolute madness.

  175. ansky says:

I hope Alyssa Milano is blogging from the Stadium tomorrow…she always seems to bring Carl such good luck.

  176. MattG says:

Take the shorter series. The Twin’s pitching staff is exhausted. Mauer just caught 12 innings, and he’s exhausted. They’ll have no sleep. They have no fourth starter either. Rivera and Hughes are totally rested, and can pitch 5 times in 6 days.

Don’t give them an extra day off. Take the shorter series.

    • whozat says:

Pretty sure they already said they’re picking that.

    • steve (different one) says:

but doesn’t the shorter series give the Twins the day off tomorrow?

i think the shorter series actually allows them to catch up a little.

    • The only difference between the “shorter” series and the “longer” series is that the longer series starts on Wednesday and the shorter series starts on Thursday. The other games are on the same days, respectively, in either scenario. Thus, it makes more sense to take the longer series since the Twins played a long game tonight and will have to fly to NY tonight. Make them play tomorrow, don’t give them 2 days to recover before Game 1. Taking the shorter series gives them a day off when they’re tired, not the longer series.

  177. ansky says:

Honestly, I didnt come away impressed with either team. This could easily be called the best game this season or the worst. It was like a contest to see who sucks the most. Tigers WIN.

  178. Drew says:

Still can’t believe Raburn blew that play.
